Obama’s Reading List for Labor Day Weekend: The McChrystal Report
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: The Obamas will head to Camp David tomorrow for a little more R & R before summer’s end. But unlike his reading list for the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard , the President has a little heavier read on his hands -the McChrystal report. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says that the President will take his first look at the report on Afghanistan early on in his visit to Camp David where he will stay with his family until Sunday. It will be the first time the President will get to read and review the General’s update. The report released yesterday from the new commander of international troops in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, emphasized a shirt from fighting the Taliban to protecting the populations, rooting out corruption and doubling Afghan security forces. The White House has waited to get their hands on a copy to respect the proper “chain of command” at the Pentagon. ”I think the president wants the report reviewed by those in the chain of command and then will want to review with that chain of command what they see and hear in this report,” Gibbs told reporters yesterday, “I think one of the hallmarks of what this president has always believed in when it comes to making these decisions is that all of those involved should have a seat at the table and that the president should and will listen to their opinion.” The White House says there are no plans for any specific groups or people to come brief the President in person about the report as he reads though it this weekend at Camp David. Not included in the assessment, yet expected soon, is specific request for more troops and resources in Afghanistan. Gibbs indicated that this is something that they expect in the coming months, and pushed back against concerns that there was a lack of urgency about Afghanistan, amid a two-month increase of violence, by the administration. “This notion somehow though that there’s no urgency in our dealing with Afghanistan I don’t think could be farther from the truth. Again, this is an issue the President has dealt with every day since we stood in Grant Park in Chicago and they called him President-elect. This is something that occupies time on his calendar seven days a week.” -Sunlen Miller

That is almost unbelievable to me.
And Gibbs was trying to say the Bush administration neglected the war in Afghanistan?
We just had our deadliest month there. What has our President or his spokesman had to say about it? They obliquely assure us it is urgent.
But they don’t bother to have a specific briefing, or even urgently read, the new report.
To be honest, I don’t think President Obama much gets military stuff. During the campaign he used to mix up people’s ranks when telling stories. Maybe it’s best if he lets the military guys handle this, but he could at least *pretend* to look interested.

Are you honestly saying Obama isn’t paying attention to Afghanistan? Even after his controversial sacking of the General over there to accelerate adoption of his realignment?
Obama has been extraordinarily active in changing the course in Afghanistan. And cute use of “deadliest month” – avoiding a real number makes it seem like it was unexpected as we significantly increased troop levels, or somehow worse than the about 42 months with higher US deaths in Iraq.

Cute?
It’s not cute. It’s tragic.
Expected or unexpected, it’s tragic.
It could get a little more public attention from the President.
And yes, the deaths in Iraq were tragic. We heard about them all the time. Every day. The President was asked about them all the time. Blamed for them, even.
I don’t want to go back to the blame, but the war shouldn’t be treated like a side issue.
And yeah, I think the President getting a new report and announcing he’ll read it sometime while on vacation but has no particular plans for a briefing on it isn’t a great illustration of really focusing on the war for which he is Commander in Chief.

We passed a grim milestone in August, the deadliest month since that war began.
I always felt that when Bush overthrew the Taliban government with air power and 200 men on the ground, our objective from then on should have been simply to ensure that no terrorist training camps ever arose again. The same resources that ousted the Taliban could have been used for that purpose.
I thought Bush made a mistake, and Obama is making a much worse mistake. Ultimately he will be forced to withdraw. More grim milestones lie ahead, and the blood will be on his hands.

In Afghanistan, Obama should stop “just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there.”
Just using Obama’s own words from August 2008.

I was referring to your deceptive wording that concealed the number of dead, 51, in favor of your objective, exaggerating the toll. Of course the deaths are tragic. These are some of our best and most committed men and women, they should be building our nation not protecting mud huts.
But clearly I don’t agree with you, I agree with Obama and (wow) Bush Jr on this narrow point – I think that thier deaths should NOT be used as a publicity exercise, to give heartfelt and sorrowful sermons on their nobility of service to the bipartisan choir of Americans who support our troops.
Deaths will be another record next month. Certainly my friends, liberal and conservative, are very aware of this enormous cost. They at least don’t need the President making sorrowful faces to the cameras about it 24/7 to remember the cost of war.

I don’t want him making sorrowful faces.
As I said.
I want him to make a point to get a scheduled briefing about McChrystal’s report, and to show some urgency in reading it.
Our President is no stranger to the camera. He is willing to spend quite a bit of face time pushing his health care policy. He is not shy about talking publicly about things he wants to put focus on. Surely he can find a way to talk about the wars he is running like a grown-up, without having to mug for the camera. Don’t you think he can?
How many questions has he answered in his press conferences about either war?

Afghanistan is Obama’s Vietnam. The left is going to pressure him to abandon it. Obama’s futute hinges on Afghanistan. He said it was the war that we HAD to win.
The delicious irony in this is that Obama will have no choice but to turn to Republicans to help him. He’s going to learn a thing or two about bipartisanship the hard way.

Obama 2008: “We’ve got to get the job done there (Afghanistan) and that requires us to have enough troops…”
Except that the Lib Congress isn’t going to let him.
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) last week called for a timetable to pull U.S. troops out of Afghanistan — the same tactic he and other war opponents used to build congressional support for forcing an end to the Iraq war.

Perhaps you don’t understand how this works. The report was written by the guys in the field and heavily reviewed, revised, edited and annotated with additional information at the Pentagon. It is designed to give the most comprehensive accounting of the war effort and situation. READING THE REPORT IS SUPERIOR TO GETTING A CLIFF’S NOTES BRIEFING ABOUT IT.
When Obama wants a briefing next week, he will be fully informed on the current situation both tactically and logistically. The report was written to be read, not held while some hits the highlights – this is a case where the ‘read the bill’ sort of nonsense makes sense.
And it’s not like Obama has to schedule a briefing far in advance. He could be in Afghanistan by Weds if he feels the need to follow up with the field commander.

Well, so far he’s promised to take “some form” of it and read it sometime early on during his vacation which starts tomorrow.
It was released yesterday.
As for me not understanding how it works, for some reason Gibbs also said this:
===“I think the president wants the report reviewed by those in the chain of command and then will want to review with that chain of command what they see and hear in this report,”===
So he does want a briefing, and he will schedule one sometime after he reads it in the next few days.
The Commander in Chief will get around to it.

“Some form” of it? He’s taking the final report, that was finished yesterday, written by the General, who was handpicked by Obama’s Defense Secretary to implement Obama’s policy changes, and added and completed by the Pentagon, who are running all the logistics. Why don’t you look up the actual press briefing?
“I think there’s broad agreement that for many years our effort in Afghanistan has been under-resourced politically, militarily, economically. The President asked for a review of our policy. The President authorized additional security forces into Afghanistan in the lead-up to elections, and appointed a new commander that is coming back with an assessment that I know many are eager to see.” -Gibbs, Aug 31 2009
