Pelosi: ‘It’s Time For Us To Talk About Health Care And Not Mr. Wilson’

ABC News’ Huma Khan reports: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi attempted to put Rep. Joe Wilson’s heckling episode yesterday behind, saying she hasn’t had any talks about sanctioning him. “As far as I'm concerned, the episode was unfortunate,” the California Democrat said at a news conference today. “It’s time for us to talk about health care and not Mr. Wilson.” Wilson, R-S.C., shouted out “You lie!” after President Obama, in attempting to discredit myths about his health care plan, said his proposals would not provide insurance to illegal immigrants. “It was stunning to hear such a statement made on the floor of the House when the president of the United States is speaking,” said Pelosi, who cast a disapproving glance at the Republican lawmaker when he shouted out. “It's against the rules of the House to — no matter how absurd the statements are that a member might be making." "There is a procedure that could’ve been implemented. I think the president did the right thing; just continued on from it and didn’t give it any more attention than it deserved.” Pelosi expressed confidence that a health care bill will pass this year and downplayed the differences among lawmakers. We'll pass "health insurance reform that will work… for the American people," Pelosi said. "I'm confident the president will sign a bill this year." Echoing the president’s language from last night, Pelosi seemed to disregarded the notion that alternatives to public option are off the table.  “If somebody has a better idea, put it on the table, that’s what the president said,” Pelosi said. “So far we haven’t seen a better idea, but it could be there. So this is about a goal. It’s not about provisions.” In other matters though, the Speaker of the House had some blunt words for the president, hinting that the prospect of sending more troops to Afghanistan is unlikely. “I don’t think there’s a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan, in the country or the Congress,” she said. ABC News’ Jonathan Karl contributed to this report.

I’m sure Nancy and co. would love to punish or sanction Mr. Wilson in some way (and he deserves it), the hypocracy would be laughable. Pelosi and her fellow Dems spent 8 years in an apparent contest to see who could say the most vile, despicable things about former President Bush. She could hardly claim to be “shocked” or “saddened” or “offended” by such a show of disrespect to President Obama. What goes around comes around, I guess.

It isn’t what he said that is the issue. It is when he said it! It isn’t hypocracy to sanction anyone for an outburst in the chambers because it isn’t tolerated from anyone.

Unfortunately people are talking about Wilson’s “you lie” and want to know more about illegals, residents and the health care costs. Making the case to pass a bill seems to have fallen below the waist side.

Posted by: Elmo | September 10, 2009, 12:31 pm 12:31 pm

@ Ken, I guess if they were playing tick for tack like Kindergarteners, it would be appropriate. But since we’ve graduated college and most grad school,we must follow proper protocol. We’re talking about during the address, not afterwards or before, but during. There’s a huge difference. ANNNND, Wilson’s point has been proven to be a lie in itself. Unless he’s ready to expose the truth about the “illegals”, which I doubt, because his compadres’ will have a hissy fit. They’re scapegoats just like other minorities; simply used to kill a bill they don’t like.

No matter what side of the aisle you sit, disrespecting the Commander in Chief is uncalled for. Joe Wilson acted like he was sitting in some 4th grade class. I can just see it if Democrats had been so rude during one of Bush’s speechs trying to sell us on Iraq.

President Obama had just said, “If you misrepresent what’s in the plan, we will call you out.” Sounds to me that he has already reaped what he had sown. WWJD – Jesus rebuked leader opening, and those were leaders of the church. Our president holds the highest office in the land, and should someone call him out when he lies to the American public. The prophet Nathan had to rebuke King David when he lied, cheated and killed. We need more of this in congress. My only beef is with Congressman Wilson who backed down and apologized. No wonder Republicans are failing to win votes. Stand up for what is right and quit backing down!!!

one more thing – Mr. Wilson was factually wrong. He symbolizes the sore loser, no idea party. Sorry Obama grave dancers. Our guy is back and healthcare reform will happen. The economy will be in better shape next year and the repubs will not make much gains in Congress in 2010. Then, in 2012, they will run a fool like Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich or Cantor.
Get used the wilderness. You over reached again this August.

Nancy Pelosi is only interested in how she looks and smiles. What an airhead!
This position has gone to her head and she needs to be replaced. She has no clue, she only knows she is #3 in succession.
Mr. Wilson was wrong in shouting out, I agree, but you can contain your frustration only so long. Just think of all the minor meetings he is attending where he has to hear the same L I E S…. Many other attendees caught the lies,I am sure, but they just kept their opinions to themselves. That’s the difference!

In almost every other Democratic country the responsibility for National Health Care is gladly shared by the entire population; that’s what makes it work. In our country, the extreme upper class (who have a ceiling on how much tax they must pay) do NOT want to put up their share. It was all over their faces last night. I do understand why they love their money so much, but even though the upper 2% don’t have to worry about their sick and elderly, it is time for them to join the rest of us in insuring the care for all who are in need. This is not about Obama (though it is very much about the polarization of our country). The Republicans have always chosen to represent big business and the upper class–not the populous. Each election year the Republicans rant that the Democrats are guilty of ‘tax and spend’ policies. Why don’t the people recognize this fancy footwork for what it is. Here’s the truth: Democrats do tax big business and the rich, and they do spend on the many programs which aid and assist the other 98% of the population. The Republicans call this “growing government.” They have made doing things that benefit all of us, sound like something bad. Know this: the Republicans represent large corporations with billions of dollars which drive the lobby system (and consequently the lawmaking process), so as to effect changes that suit their own increased profits. I ask everyone, haven’t we seen enough of what happens when we let large corporations make policies that are only in their best interest? But the Republicans are very cagey; and they are great at pulling the wool over the eyes of the American people [almost half of the country voted Republican for Bush’s second term]. The behavior of Joe Wilson, and the faces of his cohorts, said it all to me last night; they’ll do or say anything to keep from having to foot their part of the bill for something they don’t need. The fact that the GOP represents the economy-gouging corporations, and not the people, wa s once common-knowledge; but common-knowledge, like its cousin common-sense, are apparently no longer common.

Unfortunately, many others agree with me. You can no longer get to Rep Wilson’s website due to exceptionally high traffic. LOL. What a fool he is.

Congressman Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina has a legitimate concern. He does not want foreigners to get free medical care at US taxpayer expense. His concern is EXTREMELY JUSTIFIED because the Republican governor of South Carolina is having sex with a woman from Argentina — and he’s concerned she may show up in a South Carolina hospital wanting pre-natal care — (or horrors!) — an abortion.

2.Obama said nothing to alter or the health care mess. He offered noting new of substance. He totally failed to take ownership and responsibility for the health Care legislation. Zero leadership.
It’s a pathetic commentary if the best talking point Dems and their media shills can advance in the health care debate is Joe Miller.

The Republicans didn’t like being “scolded” by the President, last night. After the speech, I watched 5 minutes of Sean Hinnsanity on Fixed News and he was foaming at the mouth!! The Republican just agree with the lies of their constituents at the various town hall meetings this summer and never attempted to correct the braindead bigots who spout absolute nonsense about our President, and that’s okay. The GOP politicians had no backbone to contradict the lies. It happened all summer long. No Congressman ever shouted out at a Republican President at a joint session of Congress no less, calling him a liar, and we know which Republican President was the biggest liar of them all!! Bottom line from the Party of Losers, “no black man is gonna get uppity on us.” Republicans are just so skilled at shouting down anyone who they disagree with instead of listening and engaging in civil discourse.

The Republicans don’t mind being “scolded” by Obama. The Democrats never gave bush any respect, so why should Obama receive any? The Repubicans are letting the democrats go down on this sinking ship alone. No life jackets or rescue boats. At the end of the day, the “we won” attitude and exclusion of the Republicans from the HC reform process will be the unraveling of the democratic party.

Some idiot blabbers about disrespecting the President of the United States, one who continually lies to the American people. My favorite part was when President Obama threatened those who misrepresent the bill. Not only is the president threating Americans but he spoke out against bullies to our children not more than 48 hours earlier. What a leader. Give me a break I don’t need a thug, I can think for myself and I wish more people would think for themselves. BTW the Iraq war was too expensive so why isn’t health care reform? I may go to my wife tonight and say you remember our mortgage well I bought a vacation home that is less expensive. If I can barely afford my mortgage why should buying a a 2nd home for less money seem like a good idea. How about a plan where you stop spending my money.

I-vote – You said “THE U.S. CONSITUTION, under Article 1, Section 5[2] states: “Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members fof disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member.” Senator Joe Wilson should be censured for his outburst as the U.S. Constitution allows. Wilson swore an oath to uphold the Consitiution, no matter how “emotional” he claims to have been. Joe Wilson violated this Constitution and should be reprimanded through censure by the U.S. House of Representatives. NOW” ++++++ Way to show us all what you don’t know. The house has nothing to do with Senators, the Senate does.

Joe’s comment is inexcusable…… and his “apology” is unreal…..the Republicans should be ashamed of themselves. All of the World to SEE! Keep it up, you ‘small” racists.

Joe is the LIAR, and his counterparts too. Will someone please tell me what has President Obama lied about in the 8 months he’s been President.

My message to Nancy, its time to listen what the majority of Americans want.
Wilson’s actions were very unprofession and his constituents can decide if they will vote hime back in office…enough said.
Has everyone forgot the Dems booed Bush at his State of the Union? Reprehensible behavior from both sides of the aisle.
America cannot afford the changes that are being put forward. Show me a simple plan that fixes the inefficiencies and rampant fraud that impacts other programs run by the government (e.g. Medicare). Let’s not build a bigger house till we fix the foundation. When the government shows me it can fix the programs it already runs, and curb its spending to budget like my family does, I am willing to talk about adding more people to the mix. Until then….No way!

I’m glad for what Mr. Wilson did–more power to him…I do think the others that believe as he does(count me in ) should have stood up and applauded him!!!!!!! GO JOE!!!!!!!

Obama was elected by a 52% popular vote and now has a 50% unpopular vote against healthcare.
Pelosi has about a 12% approval rating, that’s why I hang onto her every word.
how will the government make sure that subsidies don’t go to illegal immigrants? The mechanism is left entirely up to the Health Commissioner, who is instructed by law that he or must have some process to establish immigration status before giving subsidies. Sec. 241(b)(1), pg 130 : “the Commissioner shall establish a process whereby, on the basis of information otherwise available, individuals may be deemed to be affordable credit eligible individuals.” That “shall” is key.
