Rep. Grayson Doesn’t Apologize, Compares Health Care Shortcomings to Holocaust

ABC News’ Dean Norland and Rick Klein report:

House Republicans today said they were giving Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., time to craft an apology before offering a resolution disapproving of his statement last night that “Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.”

They’ll have to wait a while longer. This afternoon, Grayson came back to the House floor to say he had no intentions of backing down from his comments:

“I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven’t voted sooner to end this holocaust in America,” Grayson said.

His latest speech drew an immediate rebuke from Republicans: “Alan Grayson not only refuses to apologize, he is doubling down on his despicable remarks and he is dragging his party with him. This is an individual who has established a pathological pattern of unstable behavior. He is derailing the national debate on healthcare reform and embarrassing his constituents as a result. Now, more than ever, Speaker Pelosi should end her silence and demand an apology,” Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement.

If there is to be a serious debate about the nature of Health Care Reform the Speaker needs to muzzle Rep. Grayson immediately. His hyperbole – delivered with all the cadance of an amateur stand up comic appearing at his first open mic night – is not only unhelpful but distracting.

A little desperate are we???

Posted by: wis134 | September 30, 2009, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

It is not unhelpful and distracting, quite the contrary. It may in fact be understating the problem.
Republicans’ idea of a “serious debate” about health care reform is how they can lock in more profits for the Wall Street greedheads they truly represent. High time someone called them out on that.

May this prophet speak the truth unto the enemies of Barack Obama, our Great Leader. We have no time for Republicans. Our Leader will transform this nation with our without them.
Bless Our Leader, Barack Hussein Obama.

Typical double standard. As a conservative I thought it was inappropriate for Joe Wilson to do what
he did and I find this to be inflamatory. At least I am consistant.

What did he call the Dems who did not
vote for the public option?? I know
they are trying to make the republicans
the bad guys here, but the dems are
not of one mind either.

Posted by: wis134 | September 30, 2009, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

Stupid to say, but DONT apologize. How many times have anti-abortion rights nuts compareed abortion to the Holocaust?

Posted by: Russell | September 30, 2009, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

Why conservatives aren’t desperate. The dems have the votes. Why don’t they pass it? Some one from the public option must know this answer. What is the amount that this legislation considers “affordable”? What is the monthly premiums for a typical family of 4? Co pay? Out of pocket deductions? Emergency room visits? I’ve asked my area congressmen and seantors and they don’t have an answer. Another fact that pro public option people fail to include the main reason why the United States lag behind other nations in life expectency; our lifestyle. We are the most obese nation on Earth based on our diet, drug abuse and lack of exercise. The result is a plethora of health complications that are self inflicted. As Walter Williams once said, “We are the only nation on Earth where the poor people are fat.” Let the dems pass and let the chips fall at the feet of the savior.

Excellent!
It’s about time we started fighting back against the insanity and vitriol of the right.
They’re the ones who took this simple concept of helping all our citizens and turned it into a war of vile lies, propaganda, racism and anti-patriotism.
The White House owned Fox “News” on its lies earlier (way overdue) and this is an amazing stand by Grayson.
As one of the citizens of this nation that the Warpublicans are trying to kill, I loudly applaud him.
Of course, those on the right are such hypocrites. It’s ok for them to label Obama Hitler, but you can’t reference the holocaust they’re enacting upon millions of their fellow citizens. (That would be the ones who aren’t rich.)

“They’re the ones who took this simple concept of helping all our citizens and turned it into a war of vile lies, propaganda, racism and anti-patriotism.”
LOL!
Ah, the mantra of the left… Always accuse your enemies of what you yourself do.
BTW, the Democrats are fighting WITH EACH OTHER. This has nothing to do with Republicans, genius. THEY CAN’T STOP DEMOCRATS FROM PASSING ANYTHING.

Posted by: Jenn | September 30, 2009, 5:56 pm 5:56 pm

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said Dem plans would tell seniors to “drop dead.” Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said Democratic plans for a public option would “kill people.” Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Dems’ proposals might “put seniors in a position of being put to death by their govt.” and the list goes on………….

Speaking as a Republican who has spent my entire adult life (30 years) working in healthcare, I am mad as hell that this pompous jerk would make a comment like this anywhere, especially on the floor. Know this, Grayson: I take this insult VERY personally. You are a clown and a disgrace to Congress. SHAME ON YOU.

Kudos to ruthie and Jaym for nailing the bullying hypocrites of wingnutdom.
It’s well past time to fight back.

Comparing this comment with his collegues, and CALLING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES …A LIAR…. IS LIKE COMPARING APPLES AND “NUTS”. Don’t Apologize REP. GRAYSON…..for what….YOU WERE Right!!!!!!!

Posted by: sara | September 30, 2009, 6:44 pm 6:44 pm

The hypocrisy nerve of the Republicans who has said and paid those to say almost “anything” out of their mouths….Whoever suggested and INFLAMED the ignorant to believe “Death Panels” should have been Prosecuted!!!!!
DON’T YOU APOLOGIZE REP. GRAYSON. WE GOT YOUR BACK!

Posted by: sara | September 30, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

Way to go Rep Greyson. Your comments are in no way inappropriate, in the manner and forum you have said them in, given similar statements on the floor by 3 Republicans lately (Not including Wilson’s clear breach of Decorum).
We need to push the public option all the way to a Senate Floor vote or filibuster.
Let the Republicans ‘kill this bill with a filibuster’ in the Senate if they can to set the stage for the upcoming 2010 elections.
The voters will then make it plainly clear what they think of the insurance companies and that they want the public option.
And, we will not have to worry about their charades anymore.
All aboard the train to filibuster!

This country is really getting out of control. I always felt that to be a congressman, senator or a President you should show some class and sophistication. I am not picking on Grayson alone but all of them are making me sick. Whats worse is that many on this board seem to think it is OK becuase the other guy does it. All of us need to freaking grow up…this behavior is beneath this once great nation. I am saddened by this behavior and embarrased for all of us.

Posted by: Ty | September 30, 2009, 9:26 pm 9:26 pm

Add to this buffoon’s incredibly stupid statement claiming ther eis a “holocaust” in america because of healthcare.
By the Way, does this moron have an answer as to why its going to take years to bring this thing online?
Besides thereal answer….the 2012 elections!

Let’s also give credit where credit is due. When Wilson said “You lie,” it was all over EVERY news channel. Have you heard about this in MSM? I haven’t. MSM shouts down anything Republican, but won’t show ONE negative thing about what is REALLY happening in our country. SHAME ON THE MEDIA!!

Posted by: wheresmymoney | September 30, 2009, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

LOL, Keith Olberman & Chris Mathews are probably fighting over who can propose to Grayson first.

Posted by: Mike_C | September 30, 2009, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm

Joe Wilson was right and he still was forced to apoligize, this dem nutcake is wrong and he won’t apoligize. President Obama lies though his eye teeth when he feels the need to impress his audience. All of the Obama supporters who want to call me names, shout me down go ahead. Let me issue a challenge. I am going to say Obama is a fraud, that is right a fraud. Now if you can prove me wrong I will apoligize but not before. When I say prove me wrong I want hard evidence such as his long form birth certificatge, his school records, his medical records, his enior thesis, articles written for the Harvard Review. How did he pay for all that school? How did he manage a world tour going to countries Americans were allowed to visit? Where is his passport information? Where is anything on him that we can believe? So I will say again, Obama is a “FRAUD”!

When is anyone going to address Tort Reform??? Oh that’s right, it is inhumane to offend trial lawyers.

My Bad, Alan Grayson is a trial lawyer. Good person to champion the health reform cause.

Tell it like it is Rep. Grayson. Finally a Dem with some guts.

Posted by: Rob | October 1, 2009, 2:47 am 2:47 am

I watched Congressman Grayson give this speech on the floor via C Span. As soon as he finished, I called his office and thanked him for speaking the truth. Since I’m a Texan and not his constituent, I immediately donated money to his campaign through ActBlue. NeoCons whine when the tables are turned, and they better get use to this type of fighting back. The new Dems in congress aren’t that far removed from their constituents that they don’t know what’s going on.

Posted by: Clint | October 1, 2009, 7:20 am 7:20 am

No apology needed. They say the Truth hurts. The Harvard study reported that 40,000 people die every day because they don’t have health insurance. So who is speaking the truth here. We got your back Representative Grayson. Stick to you guns here. Do like cheney did & tell the repubs to go screw themselves. (Of course cheney didn’t use such nice language.)

Why should Grayson apologize for speaking the truth? It’s OK for repubs to call democrats nazis, terrorists, socialists and killers, but when something true is spoken against repubs like Grayson so boldly did, OH MY GOD AN APOLOGY IS DEMANDED!! Typical HYPOCRITES!!

Posted by: jks | October 1, 2009, 9:18 am 9:18 am

What’s the republican Plan for a Family of four making 30K a year to get healthcare? DON’T GET SICK! Whats the Republican plan for a person with Cancer who was denied healthcare due to a pre existing condition? DIE Quickly! Now tell us all how any of that is not true? It’s time to take off the Gloves and bloody the noses of these Right Wing Bullies and as we all know Bullies can dish it out but they can never take it..

Posted by: TrueAmerican | October 1, 2009, 9:54 am 9:54 am

Republican Senators have always had the best interest of Big Business, Insurance Companies, Tabaco Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies, Gun Companies, Wall Street etc etc etc.. They don’t give a damn about the average individual.. As long as they get their Great Government Healthcare at $503.00 a year they’re not worried about Healthcare..

Posted by: TrueAmerican | October 1, 2009, 9:56 am 9:56 am

Now we need the Grayson Bumper Stickers “Reps plan Die Quickly” Grayson is a Great American! LOL.. the truth hurts.. oh, wait Faux News is still pushing that Acorn non-sense not Graysons giving the Republicans a double Black Eye and a Bloody nose.

Posted by: TrueAmerican | October 1, 2009, 10:00 am 10:00 am

Gotta admire a man who stands for what he believes in. Gotta love his appology. I guess the Republicans will now think twice before they try to Bully Grayson. They don’t want to give him the opportunity to give it to them again! ROFLM-Liberal-AO..

“I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven’t voted sooner to end this holocaust in America,” Grayson said.
WHAT AN IDIOT!

Okay let me get this straight. When a democrate says negative things about the repubs it’s okay, the truth and all that? When the repubs say something negative, with proof no doubt, they are called liers, fear monger, racist and anti-american? I have two questions,1. does ANYONE, JUST ONE liberal leftie have ONE thought that is their own? Anyone? Please? 2. Is there anyone on the left that can present their point of view with out name calling and/or spewing vile hate filled talking points? Just wondering

Posted by: whatsgoingonhere? | October 1, 2009, 10:31 am 10:31 am

He will apologize when Senator Corker apologizes for saying that our president has some “deficiencies.” Too many comments made by republicans which have gotten by but not this one. When Mr. Steele condemns Limbaugh for many of his comments then we will consider an apology…..guess we will have a long wait as Steele is afraid of Limbaugh and has already backed down to him….wow..what a leader.

Posted by: talmag | October 1, 2009, 11:19 am 11:19 am

Maybe he is a little over the top but I am happy to see one democrate stand up for something…Too many are worried about their own future….this health care is too important and most of them are too afraid to be aggressive and back their president. I apologize for their lack of commitment. It’s about time someone sounded like they care about the people for a change.

Posted by: talmag | October 1, 2009, 11:24 am 11:24 am

I applaude the senator, I really liked what he said about caring for poeple after they are born, the republicans are “pro life” until you are born then it is screw you!

Posted by: Roger | October 1, 2009, 11:42 am 11:42 am

We deserve health protection just the same as we deserve police protection. Our health should not depend on how an insurance company is crunching the numbers that day.

Posted by: Roger | October 1, 2009, 11:45 am 11:45 am

Why should Rep. Grayson apologize? The Republican party is the party that emphasizes taking responsibility for oneself. The logical consequence of this philosophy is that those who cannot do so (in this case, purchase health insurance) must deal with their inability to take responsiblity for themselves. I will agree that what Rep. Grayson had to say did not sound good and was not pleasant to hear; however, if this is the philosophy that you champion, you should be willing to deal with the good, bad, and ugly of that philosophy. If you are unwilling to pay any taxes to help those who cannot afford to purchase health insurance, then you should not mind the opposing side voicing the fact that you care MORE about your money than you care about whether those people live or die.

Posted by: savethemiddleclass | October 1, 2009, 11:49 am 11:49 am

Yep, Fox is taking Acorn down, just like Glenn Beck took Van jones down….the problem with the democrats is they are brain washed, entitlement kings and queens…..nope the repubs will not vote yes on any kind of public option, some day you will thank them!

Posted by: lyineyes1956 | October 1, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

JC in Texas,
What about Wilsons outburst, and what about the “Death Panel” comments repeated over and over? How about that. I hope he never apologizes, he doesn’t need to. Democrats are finally getting mad so watch out!

Posted by: moondog | October 1, 2009, 1:32 pm 1:32 pm

Of course the Republicans don’t like Rep. Grayson; he has the testicular fortitude to talk just like they do. Love it! Go Grayson…!

Posted by: DaveM | October 1, 2009, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

The Republicans should be apologizing to the American people for all the stalling and foot dragging they are doing on health care reform! The republicans do NOT want any health care reform at all since the drug and insurance companies are major campaign contributors. Voting for healthcare reform would be like biting the hand that feeds them. Rep Grayson was right in his comparison about the way republicans are treating healthcare reform, I hope he continues to bring the republican antics to the light.

Posted by: homer | October 1, 2009, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm

Holocaust, according to Merriam Webster say a mass slaughter of people. The insurance company’s have been committing a holocaust against American citizens and the Republicans are not trying to fix this which makes them culpable in this holocaust. Genocide might be another term since its mostly the poor that have no insurance so allowing them to die from lack of health care would be a good word to use. If you don’t like the words then fix the system, this isn’t physics, its not hard, people are struggling with health insurance company’s ruining their lives, some that have insurance might as well have none considering the amount of care they will allow. We should be lucky to have health care like Canada or England, its still a heck of a lot better than NOTHING which the uninsured in America have.

Posted by: Brenda | October 1, 2009, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

You people who are calling for Grayson to apologize seem to not understand that Grayson had the floor… made those comments and left. What Wilson did was interrupt the President’s speech. If you can’t see the difference between those two, you are truly lost.

Posted by: Ha! | October 2, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

Grayson should not back down. Finally someone has the guts to tell the truth!

Posted by: blu | October 4, 2009, 6:29 pm 6:29 pm

Dems realize that there are a enuf of their own party members with brains to defeat the public option plan which will bankrupt our good nation so they put down the Republical party.
Dems should stop looking for another handout and start using their heads.
