Rep. Wilson: Outburst was ‘Spontaneous’; Leadership Asked Me to Apologize

ABC News’ Gregory Simmons reports: Congressman Joe Wilson, R-S.C., appeared at his office late this morning to address his outburst Wednesday evening during President Obama’s address on health careThe GOP congressman at no point indicated remorse over his assertion the president was “a liar,” and in fact pointed to the Republican leadership as the impetus for his apology to the White House.

“Well I last night heard from the leadership that they wanted me to contact the White House and state that my statements were inappropriate and I did,” he said.  “I am grateful the White House indicated they appreciated the call and that we needed a civil discussion and I agree with that.”

Wilson said he thinks the bill lacks clarity regarding whether or not illegal aliens would receive health care coverage, an issue that remains a point of concern for him. He said there were two different amendments offered that he would have clarified, one in the Way and Means Committee and one in the Energy and Commerce.  Both were defeated, Wilson said, on party lines votes.

“I think this is wrong. We need to be discussing issues specifically to help the American people. And this does not.”

Rep. Wilson referred to illegal immigrants as, “People that have come to our country and violated laws and we should not be providing full health care services.”

Asked if his outburst was premeditated, the congressman replied, “I will tell you that It was spontaneous.”

The comment was out of order in that situation, but Illegals will continue to get services. They can not be denied under the law, so Joe was correct; the whole thing is a lie. You young people will pay forever, but that is your problem.

The democrats would never be disrespectful of a republican president or say any nasty commnents, would they?

Posted by: jamescbuilder | September 10, 2009, 12:55 pm 12:55 pm

Would he oppose that these illegals buy a private insurance package for coverage?

Posted by: Thinking | September 10, 2009, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

Well he just further solidified what an illogical idiot he is. (Not to mention the continued lack of respect by admitting the apology was not his idea). Immigrants are already receiving emergency healthcare, and have been per law since the 80s, but no way now or with this new bill will they be given “full benefits”. He can’t get his facts straight, nor defend his dubious intent with any modicom of intelligence. His oponent has raised $200k in less than 24 hours. Wilson will just keep talking himself out of office.

Mr. Wilson..there is such a thing as respect and you showed none. Your party should not have had to tell you to apologize. When the guy threw his shoes at President Bush, he was punished for disrespect. We need a little more of that here in our country. Freedom of speech is not an excuse to be rude. There is a time and a place for everything. If you really wanted to make a statment….tell it to him to his face in his office. Oh,then you would not be noticed. Unfortunately, you will only see negtive results to this arrogance.

Well those laws are State Laws the prevent Hosp. from turnning down emreg care. Not Federal Laws.
You are correct though we will pay for it. But that is hardly an excuse for not taking care of our own. Pretty weak exuse, being that even if we do nothing thosewindividuals will still get care that we pay for.

Thank you Mr. Wilson for saying to Obama what most Americans believe and would love to have said but will never have an opportunity to be in a room with Obama to express those beliefs! We all know that illegals will be covered under this bill because there is no enforcement for them not to be covered. If they show up at a hospital for treatment, the hospital is not allowed to ask if they are a citizen. My point is proven by the fact that there are laws that say illegals can’t reside in the United States and those laws are not enforced. The Americans that get out of bed every day and go to work and pay their taxes are sick of all the free-loaders in this country who spend all their time figuring out ways to work the system and get something for nothing. THE TAXPAYERS ARE SICK OF PAYING THE WAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TAUGHT A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT BY OUR GOVERNMENT!!!! EVERY HARD WORKING, TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZEN NEEDS TO SEND THIS MESSAGE TO WASHINGTON EVERYDAY – “I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANY MORE!”

I feel for Joe Wilson, in a way. Given how the GOP Congressional leadership has been boasting for months about their tight party discipline, I have no doubt this outburst was planned. For whatever reason, Joe Wilson was picked to deliver it, getting the chance to become the new conservative hero (which still may happen).
Unfortunately for him, when the response was overwhelmingly negative Wilson had to fall on his sword and take the heat on his own. Of course, him being from South Carolina, this probably will improve his chances of re-election. What a place that must be, with types like Sanford and Wilson.

He needed the Republican leadership to tell him to apologize? Didn’t he wake up this morning and say to himself, “perhaps that wasn’t a good idea, spontaneous or not?” Everyone makes mistakes but he isn’t taking responsibility.
To say that the President lies and to say that the bill lacks clarity are two different things. I can go with the clarity part for sure and wish that the town hall meetings would have served this purpose but then again look what happened there.

I hope Wilson realizes that he is now the face of violent GOP opposition to reform and has done a great service to Democrats…

As a life long Democrat, I take my hat off to Wilson. He only said out loud what so many others have thought for months. He and he alone had the courage to call Obama what he is, a liar.

“Well I last night heard from the leadership that they wanted me to contact the White House and state that my statements were inappropriate and I did,”……However, -I- am not sorry. I’m just a crazy jerk who forgot where I was…Heck, I thought it was Friday, & I was at the local high school football game. Imagine my surprise, when I realized I was seated on the floor of United States Capital.Dang! But, if I want to keep this wacky seat of mine, I better make nicey and do what the “Leadership” tells me to do. After all, who was I before all this……Shhhhhhhh…I need to keep this job for the perks & the insurance….

An apology was warranted. On the other hand, your contention is quite accurate. The primary beneficiaries of the public heath care option, will almost certainly be illegal immigrants. That was indeed the case with the child health care passed by the Clintons.

Posted by: Rick McDaniel | September 10, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Pap, what Mr. Wilson did last night is completely disrespectful and does not deserve to be credited – You can state your opinions and your oppositions, but not at the Presidential Address. It’s not the forum for such outburst – additionally, Wilson did not have his facts straight and was wrong – therefore he is either stupid or greedy – greedy because he receives contributions from insurance, pharmacuetical etc… or stupid because you don’t call the President a liar when you haven’t read the bill!

When is it alright to shout at a president and call him a liar? The answer is NEVER! I don’t care whether you agree or disagree with the man, he is still the sitting president and he deserves everyone’s respect. Why has the Republican party become so viscious and hateful? There is absolutely no excuse! It’s one of the reason’s Americans slapped them down in the last two elections. But do they get the point? In their blind and mad quest for power, they are willing to sell their souls, and their morals, to the highest bidder. It’s time for term limits.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness… What is there that the GOP doesn’t understand? Having no health insurance threatens your life, having to pay through the nose for a private insurer without knowing, when the time comes, if it will honor the coverage, or having to go bankrupt after a catastrophic event or illness to you, your children or spouse, I see as a major roadblock on the road to happiness. Unless you are an insurance or Rx company, then you enjoy the sweet life, the freedom to pick and choose who you cover, how much you charge, and the happiness that comes from a big fat profit year after year.

Rep. Wilson calls his actions “spontaneous”. If he has no better control of his emotions, my thought is he has no business being a Congressman.

Was it viscious and hateful when Dems booed GWB during his speach on social security reform? Or was it Okay then?
This time it was one guy, then it was every Dem in congress.
“When is it alright to shout at a president and call him a liar?”
In this country? Anytime I want too. It’s called the first amendment.

Talk about slippery slopes! So now it’s ok for my kid can publicly refer to a sitting president as a “liar”. How about Colonel Joe Wilson (National Guard) referring to his commander-in-chief as a “liar”? Perhaps his commanding officer will offer an opinion on this matter

Posted by: eldoug0 | September 10, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

A mother who is an illegal alien is in a car accident with her young children. All are seriously injured and would die without any assistance. So a hospital is going to turn the ambulance around and deny assistance because they are illegal aliens? I don’t think so. I guess Rep. Wilson would simply say “Let them Die!” we aren’t covering their health care cost. He knows that that is the scenario for the most part where health care would be premitted and wants to continue to spread lies of his own. Obama, in referring to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s letter, talked about the character of America. Clearly, Wilson lacks anything remotely close to character. He is not a novice and has been in this setting before. His comments were no way spontaneous, but planned and contrived from the time he sat his butt down in that chamber. But these are clearly the fiber that the GOP is made of. From Palin’s lies to Wilson cries, they all place their personal interests above this country’s. Obama is such the gentleman by accepting Wilson’s insincere apology. His character is head and shoulders above this republican idiot.

Wilson and the other racists that disagree with common sense and change would NOT disagree if Obama were White.
Too bad for America – a bi-racial president who’s mother is now labeled “unwhite” and a “—-lover”, a Harvard Grad- the best this country can produce, is being bogged down by slave mentality White Men and women who HATE to admit A Black man is RIGHT. the President has to much intelligence to stoop as low as the white man

As South Carolinians go, Wilson is a peace loving fellow. Remember back on May 22, 1856 when South Carolina Representative Preston S. Brooks entered the chamber to avenge the insults Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner had leveled at Brooks’ cousin, Senator Andrew P. Butler. Brooks almost killed Sumner right there on the floor with a cane. Those were the days!

If any apologies are in order, let’s hear from Rep. Pelosi, and the Vice-president, whose collaborative reaction was suggestive of a couple of common street thugs, updating their hit list.
Politicians have been known to lie, and often.

This behavior is beyond boorish, but what do you expect from people who routinely create lies from whole cloth? Who make up lies about health panels, who live to scare people into submission, and who have become bankrupt, immoral idolators of unfettered capitalism and worshippers of money. The Republican’s love of money is the root of all of this evil. Look at what they defend, the mega corps who ration care and deny sick people coverage and treatments. They love big rich companies, big medical, pharmaceutical, oil and energy companies, and their money more than life itself. So its no big deal for Joe Wilson to shout out something that was in and of itself just another Republican lie. Shame of you, Joe. Shame of you.

Aaron seems to think that its OK to do this. He justifies it by saying it was done to Bush (and not even close, by the way). Aaron didn’t like the booing and condemned that when it was Bush getting it. He has principals you see, but then ol’Aaron decides that the behavior is actually just fine and justifies it now that he’s on the losing end of the spectrum. Nine states turned blue for Obama for a reason, Aaron. Loudmouth southern white men toting screaming like little children at town halls and now in congress do not a democracy make. Grow up and try to regain your moral compass, provided you ever actually had one.

Everyone is so hung up on Mr. Wison’s actions. But where were you when Van Jones had to apologize for name calling republicans?? That is fair worse than being called a liar. And I think Obama is a liar. Where do you think he’s gonna get the money to cover the health care plan. You and your children for a very long time. Don’t let them cover your eyes, wake up and see the truth. I don’t feel that we should pay for immigrants, that’s not our job, send them back to their OWN country and let them handle their OWN problem. Too bad you lack the respect for others to do the same.
As a law-abiding, taxpaying American citizen, it’s not just my right to voice my opinion about the activities of our leadership, but my duty to do so.
And my comments were leveled only at those individuals who work for me.
I made no derogatory statements about anyone here, including you.
I do respect your right to disagree with my comments. I’d even welcome a good debate, provided you have something of substance to offer.
Otherwise, you’re just be wasting my time, as well as your own.

DavidM asks:
“When is it alright to shout at a president and call him a liar?”
Anytime, actually.
That’s the way I understand the law of the land, anyway.
The President is still a public servant.
Anyone can call him any name they wish, as long as they haven’t threatened his safety.
Even Hillary Clinton would agree with me on that one. She certainly stood up for those who called former President Bush far worse!
So maybe, it’s just the name “liar,” that bothers you?
Do you still believe that he’ll do everything he’s promised, even though he’s already broken quite a few of those promises?
You might argue that nearly every politician makes promises…and rarely keeps them.
I certainly won’t disagree.
So, when politicians break those promises, does that make them “liars?”
That’s a question that every individual must answer for themselves.

Those posting that Joe is correct and “it is a lie” regarding health care for illegal immigrants are WRONG and also guilty of LIES!
The president is correct: The House bill contains a section (Sec. 246) titled “NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS,” which states: “Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.”
STOP SPREADING LIES!!!

The Repubs are officially pathological liars. In other words, they have reached the point where they now actually believe the lies they peddle.
For the record, Congressman Wilson screamed “you lie” when the president stated that the proposed health care reform plan would NOT pay for the medical care of illegal aliens. Thus, in the opinion of Congressman Wilson, the plan will result in taxpayer money being spent on medical care for illegal aliens.
Now for the truth: The plan, as written, does, indeed, specifically and clearly state that illegal aliens are NOT eligible. Moreover, substantial proof of citizenship must be furnished to get coverage through the program. Bottom line, at least on this point, the CONGRESSMAN is the liar.

Posted by: cupidsrevenge | September 11, 2009, 9:59 am 9:59 am

Wilson was completely disrespectful and the fact that someone had to tell him to apologize shows what kind of person he is. He ought to be ashamed of himself and step down. There will be no provision in the bill that would cover people who are undocumented. The only way to stop hospitals from treating these people is to make it against the law, which is inhumane. So, the President did not lie and again, Wilson should step down.

Wilson is a retired Army National Guard colonel. He enjoys FREE lifetime GOVERNMENT paid medical coverage, known as TRICARE. The program has access not only to the military’s 133,500 uniformed health professionals, but also cooperating private doctors, paid by the Department of Defense. Surveys from 2007 and 2008 list TRICARE among “the best health insurer(s) in the nation” by customer satisfaction.

Wilson was wrong and broke House rules. It is one thing to be outspoken but to break house rules knowingly means this has to be dealt with. Wilson must apologize on the House floor. That is the way this is handled. Anything less means he was not sincere in his apology to the President.

Betty W. You are wrong. Illegals can be denied because they are not citizens of this country. The U.S. was closing businesses down for hiring illegals especially in Arizona. Posted by: amerigobble | September 11, 2009, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm

Richard — I suggest that you actually READ what you’ve quoted from the H.B. you’re citing.
All sect. 246 says is that illegals aren’t supposed to receive any extra government benefits, in order to help them pay for their new health care premiums.
Because, the plan is for “low income” citizens to get an extra stipend, to help them pay.
Extra welfare benefits, for instance.
Yet, as millions of illegals are already receiving welfare benefits…there will likely be many who will also receive the additional funds — this mainly due to the fact that no “citizenship requirement” is in the Bill, at all…and every time a member of Congress tries to add that requirement into the Bill, the leftist majority kills their proposal.
So, until you can cite a section stating that “citizenship” will be VERIFIED for each participant in Obama’s socialized health care
program — throwing the term “liar” around, even more times than Wilson did, doesn’t help make your argument.
Because, so far, the facts corroborate Wilson’s claim — not yours…and not Obama’s.
You might want to read what CNN reported on this subject, on Aug. 27.
The President might want to read it, as well.
