Reporter Sneezes the Wrong Way in Front of Secy Sebelius

At a briefing just now, NBC's Chuck Todd just sneezed into his hand, rather than his arm, prompting the joking disapproval of Health Secretary Sebelius and press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Gibbs pointed out that a print reporter had just sneezed the correct way. Your humble correspondent noted that his 2-year-old did it the correct way this morning, prompting Sebelius to offer Chuck an Elmo video.

UPDATE: In the interests of full disclosure, I should point out that I, too, have not yet fully adapted to the new sneeze-in-your-arm-not-your-hand guidelines.

I can see it now….
“Tonight on Glenn Beck! Obama creates gas chambers for people who sneeze wrong!”
And Glenn Beck is going to start crying about how Obama is going to make FUBU jackets out of people with seasonal allergies.

In Obama’s America, white people who sneeze will shot, turned into soap, and sold in Iran….
So Al Qaeda terrorists can slather their bodies with the remains of your grandparents… as they plan for war against America.
Meanwhile, the soap proceeds will be used to finance the first all-gay NASCAR team, complete with an unbeatable superharged, rainbow car. ACORN is going to bus their people into the Talladega speedway to have a giant sit-in.
I heard it all on Limbaugh.

So now the germs are all over the sleeve of your shirt or coat to float around in the air for all to breathe or touch or you rub them off on something for someone to touch.
Real dumb.
How about sneezing into a facial tissue or a handkerchief?

What are you doing surfing the web?
Like I said, you gotta tune into FOX. Otherwise you’re just going to get biased stuff like the things you saw on the internet.
Rush Limbaugh is good, too. He did an entire spiel on segregation…. and his listeners have responded very, very favorably. I guarantee it will leave you feeling reinforced in your biases.

Washing hands & covering sneezes are important infection control methods during flu season.

“So now the germs are all over the sleeve of your shirt or coat to float around in the air for all to breathe or touch or you rub them off on something for someone to touch.

It is preferable to sneezing in one’s hand considering how many things you touch with your hands as opposed to the inside of your elbow.
“How about sneezing into a facial tissue or a handkerchief?”
Obviously this is for occasions when those items are not handy.
Seriously, are right wingers so craven that they want to make a stink about simple advice on avoiding spreading germs?

This is pathetic,on a par with Biden suggesting that air travel was unsafe. When are these lawyer-politicians going to shut up and leave the public health issues to the profesionals? There is no proven evidence that covering your sneeze with your arm instead of your hand decreases the spread of H1N1,particularly if you practice good personal hygiene.

Whats wrong with people – can’t you take a little humor – mixed in with a serious topic. We are trying to minimize the spread of the H1N1 Flu – which could make a lot of people sick this fall and winter. Have we become so partisan that we look at everything through political eyes

Posted by: twaky | September 17, 2009, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

The government has NO business telling people not to spread the flu.
If I want to spread the flu, that is my right as an American.
Sure, the “scientists” like to tell that the flu is caused by a virus. But did you know that many other scientists have proven that the flu by global cooling?
This swine flu scare is just a crisis cooked up by the liberals in Washington so that we will accept changes that will cripple our economy, so people will stay home instead of shop. And then, when we are all locked inside our houses, waiting for Obama to tell us when it is safe to come out. He is going to round up all the conservatives and put them in camps. And then he’ll just say that the patriots all got sick with the flu and passed away… because they did not listen to him.
Can’t you see what they are doing?

CDC on Seasonal Influenza
“Stop the Spread of Germs that Make You and Others Sick!
Serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are spread by:
* Coughing or sneezing
* Unclean hands
To help stop the spread of germs,
* Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
* If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
* Put your used tissue in the waste basket.
Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing
* Wash with soap and water.
or
* Clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner.”
The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

Hey Ryan C, I know (about obama telling us to properly inflate our tires to increase gas mileage). As soon as he said that I thought “that’s why I only get 15 miles on the highway in my 1990 station wagon, with the V-8 engine. I ran out and put some air in the tires but it still only gets 15 miles on the highway. I only paid $700 for it so maybe I should have sold it to the government for the $4500 clunker price.

sammy, but it must make you think twice that car experts, auto mechanics, the auto industry, etc. for years were saying improperly inflated tires would hurt your gas mileage. I’m old enough to remember experts saying the same thing thirty years ago. This is not new information.
Your experience with your old car is not the norm. Your engine might be too worn for it to make a difference, you might be accelerating too fast which sends a lot of unburned gas out of your exhaust, you may have over-inflated your tires, you may have used an improper method to calculate your mileage. Experts say properly inflated tires will increase gas mileage 6%. That’s not a lot but multiplied by millions of cars, it is a lot.
I drive an old car, too. I noticed the biggest difference in its gas mileage when I stopped doing those jack rabbit starts.

I get a paper towel or tissue or two for free at the local public restroom. I prefer the ones supplied that are for hands, but those on the long rolls near the toilet will work just fine. When too full of snot to keep, I just throw them away. Oh, and avoid restrooms in government buildings… They are not clean or sanitary and never have hand sanitizers that work.

Instead of promoting sneezing into a Sheryl Crow-approved combination dinner/SNOT sleeve (to help prevent global warming), Sebelius should be holding press conferences by video conferencing. That would prevent the spread of germs entirely.
After all, we wouldn’t want our overlords in government getting sick, now would we?
“I also like the idea of not using paper napkins, which happen to be made from virgin wood and represent the height of wastefulness. I have designed a clothing line that has what’s called a “dining sleeve.” The sleeve is detachable and can be replaced with another “dining sleeve,” after usage. The design will offer the “diner” the convenience of wiping his mouth on his sleeve rather than throwing out yet another barely used paper product. I think this idea could also translate quite well to those suffering with an annoying head cold.” – Sheryl Crow

Sneezing into your hands, and then washing them, or using a hand-sanitizer, is healthier than having a 100+mph blowback on your shoulder (or crook of the arm), and then giving someone a hug and all your filthy disease gets on someone?
The tissue thing is better, or a handkerchief, definitely have the hand-sanitizer…
However, that this is the BIG news report of the day from Mr. Tapper is just pathetic…
Ignore the real news some more, pray that your drones stay ignorant of what the REAL news is….
PRAY THEY STAY AWAY FROM FOXNEWS….

Many people seem to be missing the point of Secretary Sebelius’ comment. It is one of her responsibilities to keep people informed about all sorts of Healthcare issues. Currently many schools and Day Care faciliites advise students to sneeze into their own sleeves. While this may seem ” discusting” to some people it is much better than a child’s initial reaction to sneeze into their hand or not even bother to contain their sneeze at all. Most children to not have tissue readily available and even that is not always the best answer since those tissues are not always disposed of in a healthy manor. If you want to avoid the h1n1 virus, get a flu shot if you are in a high risk category and contain your cough and sneeze germs in the best way possible. Commend Secretary Sebelius for passing on some good pointers instead of nitpicking what she does.

I mean, really, how did I get along all these years without the administration holding my hand and showing me what to do? Stupid me, I usually cover my nose with my hands when I sneeze and then wash them, or use a wipe. I even use a napkin or tissue; but hey, I must have been wrong all of the time.
Oh, goody, what will my mommy government teach me tomorrow? Can’t wait!
And do any posters think for a moment that ABC cares about the actual news? That’s background noise to them. Maybe tomorrow we’ll be treated to an article about Michelle Obama’s wardrobe or the daily life of first dog, Bo.

Pulled his shirt tail out of his pants and blew his nose into it then without ceremony tucked the shirt tail back in. It would be better to direct your sneeze at the floor, especially if it’s a hard floor and there’s no one within a few feet. Most viruses will die quickly when they dry out, and people are not likely to come in contact with it, unless they are walking around barefoot.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. If you sneeze into your hand, at least you can wash your hand. Sneezing or coughing on your sleeve leaves germs that can be passed along to anyone who brushes against you in a crowded elevator, or touches something you might have been carrying in your arms, or handles your coat.
Hugging is right out too.

Germs are good for you. You get sick, you build immunity, you get better. Why the heck does everyone in this world run around like there is an imminent threat everywhere that will be the end of the world?
If you tell me how to sneeze, I’m going to sneeze directly on you just to spite you.

As long as your cigarette smoke stays away from any place I may reasonably want to go, you should be allowed to smoke anywhere you like.
We could probably reach a compromise: If the “I wanna smoke” lobby would offer for smokers to get some kind of “bubble” to walk around in so that all of the smoke stayed on your own clothes, in your own lungs, etc., then we might well be able to get the politicians to let you smoke in public. Actually, it would be kinda cool to watch your bubble fill up… let’s try it!

I agree with many of you, sneezing into the inside of your elbow is not the best way to contain a sneeze. This happened to me the other day when a friend of mine ( who is a physicians’s assistant) sneezed into her elbow while we were put eating. I promptly ordered a fresh glass of water. I was beyond disgusted and felt like my water glass and I had just been infected!!!!’

Stay away from all germs. Live in an antiseptic bubble.
Uhhh, right. The immune system in every living being needs to be challenged. It’s how it functions.
It is why vaccines work, allowing the body to identify invaders that have been rendered harmless. Then, the body develops a program to recognize and effectively fight off live viruses which are all around us.
If these fruitcakes have their way, our immune systems will eventually be rendered impotent.
We’ll become like the invaders in the fiction “War of the Worlds”, dying from exposure to microbes that we had once fought off.

This is a national neurosis — woman’s movement in full bloom. Sneeze in her face next time. This mommyhood state has gone too far when they can cause a panic over the flu. Especially one that is generally less severe than most. Is this the nationalized health care of the future?

I think she was doing her job when she corrected such a minor yet important thing that most people do without thinking about it. Working in a hospital, infection control is a major issue and if it cuts down on the transmition of disease and it is as simple as sneezing in your elbow then I think its totally worth it.
Its also comforting to know that someone in Washington is doing their job :-)

Sebelius like most politicians is a snake oil salesman.
Really, hand sanitizer as a solution for a sneeze? What kind of psychotropic drugs is this woman taking? Her BS plan for mass use of santitizers actually increases susceptibility to infection by reducing the bodies natural defenses.
I’m not surprised by her suggestion of using “Elmo” as a trainer, as that seems to be her standard level of intellectual funtionality.

Posted by: Jon Weiss | September 18, 2009, 8:29 am 8:29 am

Health Secretary Sebelius was just demonstrating the democrat method of lying without enabling the public to actually read her lips!
Don’t be surprised if that same tactic will be used by Robert Gibbs, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama.

Posted by: Davole | September 18, 2009, 8:48 am 8:48 am

This arm-sneeze thing is simplistic at best. The important thing to remember is to sneeze in a way that captures the aerosols released when sneezing or coughing.
A tissue or handkerchief does just as well AND is superior at keeping any viral organisms away from other people by not contaminating external clothing.
Aside from that, be careful or if you sneeze the wrong way, you might become classified as a ‘domestic terrorist’.

Wow! The fact that such a humorous little exchange could prompt such incredibly hostile comments is scary. Folks, it’s just funny. And by the way, little things like knowing how to sneeze in a way that minimizes the chance of infecting those around you isn’t evidence of the “Nanny State,” it’s just the kind of good, common sense that we all used to see as a virtue. To paraphrase Sec. Sebelius, Geeesh!.

I suppose they’ll soon be telling us how to get the most out of every toilet tissue square. I’m sure they’ll also touch on the fine art of pinching one off just right, especially the last one.
Of course, mild to severe diarrhea poses a unique problem. Using a washable cloth will save paper, in case they want to fry the working part of their burnt-out brains trying to figure that one out.
Then there’s the problem of more and more disposable diapers and all the Depends being discarded by the useless retirees who should have visited a death panel as soon as they retired.

I don’t think its about a political rant or blowing something, no pun intented, out of control, it’s about the arrogance on the part of this administration, looking down it’s nose at us like we can’t make a decision for ourselves. I mean come on do we really need the governmemt to tell us how to sneeze?

Posted by: jim | September 18, 2009, 10:46 am 10:46 am

Al D: “Obama has collected the largest group of idiots ever seen in one place.”
Correction, I’m sure you meant to say “Any Tea Bag rally” instead of “Obama.” Glad I could correct that for you.

Whoops, that should have been cited to CN.

Posted by: Mike | September 18, 2009, 10:49 am 10:49 am

People wash their hands after they sneeze. They certainly don’t wash their sleeves after they sneeze. So the germs are just transferred elsewhere as opposed to being washed off of hands with warm water and soap. Sounds pretty counterproductive if you ask me.

Posted by: Matt | September 18, 2009, 10:52 am 10:52 am

Nanny State indeed.

Posted by: Mary Popkins | September 18, 2009, 11:02 am 11:02 am

Who’s got the time to bring their elbow all the way up to their nose and mouth? The hand is much more instinctive and provides a quicker reflex to a sudden sneeze attack.
The danger of this approach is that you might give an unintended elbow to the person sitting or standing next to you.
Also, this maneuver is only effective if you are wearing a long sleeve. If you are not wearing a long sleeve than you run the risk of transferring whatever deadly germs you may carry onto another human being that you might hug or put in a headlock.
The only solution to this critical issue is to either make a mandatory requirement that every U.S. citizen wear long sleeve shirts or coats at all times, or allow the hand technique by requiring the mandatory use of gloves.

Ever watched how people stand? With their hands into their elbows, crossed arms? And they sneeze into said elbow, then put their hands back into the elbow to resume their stance…See the problem? Snotty elbows? Carry the hand sanitizer, carry a tissue, and wash your hands frequently..And whatever you do..Don’t grab someone’s arm when you are trying to get their attention! Nasty.

Posted by: Tee | September 18, 2009, 11:42 am 11:42 am

You see, she’s just reiterating the recommendation of the CDC in Atlanta, which, as far as I know is not funded by the Democratic Party, Acorn, or MoveOn. The bitter Wingnut comments are not surprising since they never seem to bother to look into the scientific or medical basis of anything, they just reflexively spout their “feelings”. Shouldn’t some of your folks be getting back over to Faux, where they tell you how you should “think”?

Posted by: Bill | September 18, 2009, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

The “right” way to sneeze would have been to blow snot all up and down the front of this twit. She only knows the PC way to sneeze since she mainly deals with second graders anyways.

Posted by: nceeno | September 18, 2009, 12:55 pm 12:55 pm

The solution is obvious. Just ban sneezing in public places or tax it

Posted by: Ms Bean | September 18, 2009, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

What kind of moron would tell people to sneeze on their arm or clothing? The virus is still able to live on a warm, porous surface plus, you then have mucous and saliva on your clothing.
Here’s a thought….if you’re sick, stay home. If you are out in public, either muffle the sneeze or carry some kleenex. It isn’t like a sneeze sneaks up on you with no warning. Coughing is another matter but can be contained within a Kleenex.
A little common sense and hygiene can go a long way.

I think what Al D. really meant to say was:
“Obama’s government is made up of the largest group of idiots ever seen in one place.”
Hopefully that will clear up any confusion for people like Mike.

Posted by: ttj | September 18, 2009, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

I’ll sneeze any way I want. A government official telling us how to sneeze and admonishing an adult like a little kid when he doesn’t sneeze “properly” is the height of the nanny state. I foresee a day when there will be a fine imposed on people who don’t toe the government line on sneezing, coughing, or farting. (To all liberals:That last sentence is meant as humor.Get a conservative to explain it to you. )

I had elementary school substitute teachers who looked and acted like Sebelius. I can’t remember any of their names, though, because they had little or no positive impact on me.
Ms. Sebelius will eventually be just another of those forgettable figures from our past. Until then, shut your nasty little mouths, don’t chew gum in class, and cover your mouth with your elbow.

Posted by: Texas Pete | September 18, 2009, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

I hate to point this out, but here goes. When you sneeze into your sleeve, it’s still there until you change clothes, able to be rubbed off on anyone unlucky enough to brush against you. If you sneeze into your hand, a simple trick like washing your hands removes any germs from them. It’s nice to see that another of this administration’s officials has gone to the trouble to think things through.
Just as an afterthought, are we allowed to go back to the traditional way of covering a sneeze or cough, after the wondervaccines have been distributed? You’d think that if they work, there’s no danger of being infected from someone’s careless sneeze.

Posted by: Tim | September 18, 2009, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

The CDC says it is acceptable for any attendee at a “Tea bag rally” to sneeze into Beck’s perineum, since they’ll be in the area anyway.

Hate to break all your bubbles gang but the elbow/sleeve is the way to go and every preschool and elementary school is teaching it and the medical community highly recommends it. Do a search on cough into your elbow and get a clue.
I just attended a trade show and got sick because there were so many people using their hands and NOT WASHING them because they don’t have sinks in their back pockets and were NOT carrying around hand sanitizers.

Posted by: Buck Bagaw | September 18, 2009, 7:46 pm 7:46 pm

Buck,
I hate to break YOUR bubble Buck, but 50% of the students in the 20 largest cities in the US do NOT graduate from high school (includes Washington, DC).
3 out of 4 students in Oklahoma don’t know who the first US president was. Do you really think they’re going to care about sneezing protocol?
As for the “medical community highly recommends it”, virtually every single doctor and nurse I have ever seen does NOT wash their hands before seeing a patient. In my over 30 years as an adult I recall less than a handful that practiced acceptable pre-examination washing protocols, and one of those “good” offices was my uncle’s office. Recent articles show this problem continues to exist after decades of training (search net for “doctors don’t wash hands”).

I cannot believe the number of men that do not carry a handkerchief anymore. HELLO- it contains the droplets in one enclosed space -it doesn’t make you look like a 4 year old wiping your nose and sneezing on your arm. IT KEEPS GERMS CONTAINED and not spredding to other people.

Just because something is being taught a certain way right now doesn’t mean it’s right. The way we were taught years ago was different, and I’m quite sure it’s going to be taught differently in the future. This elbow thing has not been written by God on marble stones.
The elbow thing is also disgusting. Walking around all day with your shirt full of green phlegm, if wearing long sleeves? Gross. What, are people going to carry a change of shirt with them–several, in case they sneeze more than once? Or go to the bathroom to wash your arm?
I don’t see how walking around with a big green glob of snot inside my elbow is somehow, more hygienic than washing my hands.
