Specter on Wilson’s “Hero” Status: What’s Happening in America?

From Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller:

The Republican turned Democrat, Senator Arlen Specter expressed a little frustration at how his former party is treating Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC), following his now famous “You lie” outburst during President Obama’s address last week.

While the House resolution was being discussed on the House floor Specter brought up Wilson’s reception by some Republicans, as an example that anything can happen in politics.

“Who knows what November will bring,” Specter said at a fundraiser for his reelection campaign in Philadelphia, “I’m optimistic about success in the primary but I’m not taking it for granted. Who knows what November will bring with the resurgence of Republicans and what is going on. If this guy from South Carolina can be a hero, what’s happening in America? Is anybody secure?”

President Obama was present at the fundraiser, and spoke immediately after Specter, yet did not bring up the resolution in the House.

Earlier today Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton said the resolution is “house business” and not something the White House would be commenting on, “this is something that the House is doing.”

After Wilson interrupted the President during his joint address to Congress Wednesday Senator Specter was quick to react.

“I’m not saying the guy should be kicked out of the House,” Specter said on Bill Press’ radio show Thursday morning, “But there ought to be some rebuke, reprimand, censure — something that will discourage that kind of conduct in the future,” Specter said. “If you do that to the president, it’s open season.”

The House voted 240-179 to reprimand Joe Wilson this afternoon.

Here’s the rebuke
“Whereas the conduct of the Representative from South Carolina was a breach of decorum and degraded the proceedings of the joint session, to the discredit of the House: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives disapproves of the behavior of the Representative from South Carolina,” the resolution says.”
Not a big deal.

I’d more likely listen to a pig offer a critique on ballet than Arlen Specter pontificate upon proper or principled “conduct”.

Posted by: Thank God for Karma | September 15, 2009, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

Arlen Specter was never a real conservative, he was only ever a Republican for his own craven political expediency, as was his jump to the democrat party. His entire career is/was a lie. Thus, this statement from him is worthless.
Joe Wilson is a hero for speaking truth to power. There are not adequate words to express my overwhelming and proudly-held CONTEMPT for this disgraceful Congress and it’s craven, traitorous leadership; nor for the occupier of the White House.

Senator Wilson is a hero. Unlike the other a$$es sitting in the room, he had the nerve to stand up. There was no mechanism to exclude illegals, Obama was either lying or was ignorant (The bill has since been adjusted). At least Joe read the bill.

Let’s see…what’s happening in America? Due to policies, agendas, czars, corruption, debt, fraud, and a community organizer trying to play President, what’s happening is people are mad as hell.
Say what you want about race, financial disparities, religion, or political orientation being the catalysts, but any rational thinking citizen knows when he/she is being taken for a ride. Finally folks are waking up and realizing that it is OUR tax money, OUR hard work, OUR families and even our own country that’s being taken for granted by government more now than ever before. This latest expose on ACORN sheds light on the absolute corruption of these so-called “community organizations” that are no more than con artists using funds they receive from OUR taxes to promote their immoral and at times illegal agendas.
So if Specter is really dumb enough to ask “what’s happening in America”, maybe he should take a look around at his “new party”, and then attend a “tea party”. He’ll get it then.

“Before Rep. Joe Wilson was famous for confronting President Barack Obama, he was perhaps best known as a fervent supporter of flying the Southern Cross about the South Carolina Capitol.
Now, at least two people are trying to cash in on his new fame on eBay, retailing flags that flew over the capitol and were officially certified by then-State Senator Wilson.”
ROFLMAO!

Ryan C – Let us lead you by the hand since you refuse to acknowledge reality:
“It’s fast becoming conventional wisdom, but statistics wonk Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com reiterated that Democrats should be nervous about the 2010 midterm elections. “I don’t think you should feel at all comforted by 2010,” said Silver. The political prognosticator PREDICTED A 20- to 50-SEAT LOSS IN THE HOUSE FOR THE DEMOCRATS AND EITHER A ONE SEAT GAIN OR AS MUCH AS A SIX SEAT LOSS FOR THE DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE. This comes from the same numbers guru who called the presidential election results correctly in 49 states. “Don’t be complacent about 2010,” Silver warned bloggers and activists attending the Netroots Nation conference in Pittsburgh.”

Specter is insignificant and has no principles. Who cares what he says. He’ll be replaced next year by either a D or a R that actually believes in representing the people instead of representing his/her ego.

What’s happening in America? Gee, just sitting here thinking the same thing. Well it might have to do with people are reading, really digging, really asking questions on who are those people in that whitehouse like Van Jones (left after exposed for who he is), Rangel, the big one ACORN (what about taking a vote on that one Dems?) Now you tell me what is wrong and why is the office receiving “no” respect. Think about it real hard. It will come to you. Just think.

I guess I wanted to also say-”the people” might need a resolution to say “we disapprove the “ignoring what needs to be investigated and no one is listening”. Can we take a vote on that one? And they wonder why is there no respect? Don’t know about you but I don’t recognize anything but what the constitution allows and doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore. What happened?

Sen. Spector- how did you vote on the bills introduced not to allow Illegals to be eligible for the proposed health care bills? This is what Rep. Wilson was talking about when he called out”you lie”– no enforcement.

“Nate Silver sits on your side of the aisle. Case closed.”
If you’re gonna hold someone’s hand you should lead them down the right path.
Instead of some quick quote from Silver reported 3rd hand when you can just go to his website.
“As I’ve been telling people all week here in Pittsburgh, there’s ample reason for Democrats to be worried — perhaps deeply so — about 2010. Without major intervening events like 9/11, the party that wins the White House almost always loses seats at the midterm elections — since World War II, an average of 17 seats in the House after the White House changes parties. Democrats have substantially more seats to defend than Republicans, particularly in the House. They appear to face a significant enthusiasm gap after having dominated virtually all close elections in 2006 and 2008. And the economy and health care are contingencies that could work either way, but which probably present more downside risk to Democrats than upside over the next 12-18 months, particularly if some version of health care reform fails to pass. While the Democrats are not extraordinary likely to lose the House, such an outcome is certainly well within the realm of possibility (I’d put the chance at somewhere between 1-in-4 and 1-in-3). The Senate picture is a bit brighter for them, but they are probably more likely now to lose seats in the chamber than to add to their majority, in spite of the spate of Republican retirements in Ohio, Missouri and other states. In a wave-type election, a net loss of as many as 4-6 seats is conceivable.
snip stuff making critiquing Rasmussen
If the electorate that goes to the polls next November is in fact one which trusts Republicans more than Democrats on education and social security, then Democrats will lose the Senate seat in Pennsylvania and undoubtedly almost every other competitive race — it will be really, really ugly for them. But I just have a little bit of trouble accepting that as a likely scenario. In 2004 exit polling, voters who listed education as their top priority went to John Kerry over George W. Bush by a 3:1 margin. As of pre-Katrina 2005, when Social Security was being polled frequently in what was not a particularly great time for the Democratic party, Democrats led Republicans by an average of about 15 points on the issue — and that was long before the market collapse that would seem to have undermined Republicans’ calls to partially privatize the system.
Is it possible that the electorate which is voting in November 2010 will be so down on the Democrats that they trust Republicans more on issues like these? Sure, it is possible — if the enthusiasm gap is wide enough, if Obama’s approval is low enough, if the health care debate has been bungled enough, and if the economy is still hemorrhaging jobs. But I’d consider it something of a worst-case scenario. That’s probably the best way to regard these Rasmussen polls for the time being.”

Posted by: Ryan C | September 15, 2009, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm

Here is one more thing. What about that senator (woman) who thought it above her office to attend the tea parties? Can you believe she had the nerve to sit in her cush office being paid with your tax dollars and her office is above that? Can’t wait until 2010. I hope I live to see the next election. Remember these people and don’t forget, let’s get in office people who are representing me and you. I might just run myself.

The fact that people are obsessed with this nonsense reveals how pointless the President’s speech has become.I feel that Mr. Obama is losing touch with the job of being president; his appearence on Letterman has more to do with acting as President instead of governing.

“In this posting you seem to concede Dems will lose seats”
I have always stated that Democrats are likely to lose seats based on historical trends of which there are several including a party recovering after tow brutal elections, the opposing party gaining seats in the President’s first term, etc.
But if the GOP makes only minimal gains (say a 5 seat gain in the House) they are in deep trouble as a party.
Because the GOP field for 2012 looks real bad right now.
“In prior posting you infer Dems are just fine as they are leading in generic ballot.”
Losing 5 seats would be a victory for the Democrats.
Anything under 10 would probably be ok.
15 is breaking even.
20+ means they lost.
Now who is more vulnerable?
Liberal Democrats in safe districts or Blue Dogs in competitive ones?

Liberals have liberal heroes (who are absolved of egregious behavior/actions as long as they stay true to ideology: see T. Kennedy, Rangel, Daschle, Dodd, B. Clinton, V. Jones, R. Burris, etc., etc., etc.).

I’m not worried about 2012. Or 2010. Obama has alienated many of his voters in just 9 short months. I don’t see any change in trend. Twenty seats in House. Easy.

Republicans, by giving Joe Wilson “hero” from their points of view, and to cover their own disgrace, have given ammunition to the enemy, al Queda. Republicans want another hit from al Queda so they can tout that President Obama was the wrong choice. Since they lost 2008 elections, Republicans are acting as if they died. The steps of accepting death is shock, then denial, then anger, then denial, then anger, then acceptance, then peace of understanding. Republicans will remain in the “anger” mode as long as they possibly can in order to get back what died in 2008 — the Republican Party.

All the shouting and pushing are from those in the Republican Party trying to revive themselves but no resusitation instructions were signed by them in November 2008. They are zoombies walking around trying to get back what they forever lost in November 2008 — their identity. Death is final and Republicans are dead in water. All the shouting, pushing, shoving, name calling, and abusive behaviors won’t bring back Republican Party of Reaganism. The Republican Party won’t ever come back since most Americans don’t behave badly like they do. No one really wants to be a “Jerry Springer” 15 min of fame guest, and that is just what Republicans are. We all had 8 years of hillbilly Bush for President who set the bar very low. Wilson picked an inappropriate time for his outburst; however, it is extremely difficult to hold one’s tongue when you know the person speaking is lying. Obama and his liberal cronies based the entire 2008 campaign on lies. Wilson did apologize and Obama accepted. This should be the end of the story. Congress needs to move on, quit acting like children, and get to work!!! We just don’t need another distraction!! How about all the mean-spirited things that libs have said about G W Bush and ordinary citizens??? They had better clean up their own act!! That goes for Obama too!!! When Obama won, we all lost. All of this racial venting is truly depressing. Civility has been forgotten or willfully ignored by some. Why? Who lost and who won -voters. The dust is settled, let man do what we hired him to do and clean up this mess. Whether a Republican or Democrat in office, we would still be arguing over Healthcare reform, the economy and bailouts… simply because we have to do this. Avoiding a second Great Depression or losing employer-based health insurance because of affordibility in 5 years for lack of reform of an increasing unaffordable system were and are and will be necessary issues to dispense with. It seems a lot of this “anger” of combination of many things – Republicans loosing the general elections is behind this. The Now Way No How response while at times theatrical, at times comical, appears vain and counterproductive.

What on earth are you babbling about? Obama got good grades at Columbia, and then in three years as the director of the Developing Communities Project he grew it’s staff from one to thirteen and its annual budget from $70,000 to $400,000. That’s a heck of a resume that got him into Harvard, where he proceded to graduate magna cum laude.
But in your eyes, he’s black so there’s no POSSIBLE way he could have earned it. If his career to this point, including a successful stint as a professor, doesn’t prove it than there is no way twenty year old report cards would do it. Most likely, the Right would find that he took a class from some professor whose half brother once was a member of the Communist party and just use it as fodder for their two minute hate.
Go ahead and paint Obama as an elitist left wing economic idiot. That’s partisan. But dismissing ALL the assembled evidence that he’s a bright man with a strong education background ONLY because he’s black – yes, that is racist. The louder and more extreme the ‘right’ gets is beneficial for the Dems….. one of the reasons McCain lost the election (besides Palin) were his strange actions and statements during the financial crisis… in a moment of stress, McCain appeared to be not in control of himself or his political message….
For the last few months the ‘right’ and Republicans have been manifesting the same behavior. It makes for great TV, but the message that is left is the same as last fall…
‘we are out of control, and we have no message other than being loud and demonstrating how stressed we are.
Now, .. ‘birthers’, ‘deathers’, comparisons to nazis and communists make great theater,
but the results will be the same as in the 2008 election….. America rejected the hysteria, xenophobia, and delusional hate speak, before, and will do so again.
The shrill vocal minority is exactly that, a minority, they are seen by the majority of Americans for what they really are and represent.

I wouldn’t beat that drum too loudly seeing as how Republicans are the ones likely to gain a dozen seats or so in the House via switches if the most conservative Blue Dogs are driven out over health care and CO2 limits.

Republicans aren’t the ones demanding hand recounts and breaking election rules by ignoring deadlines. Republicans aren’t the ones crying foul at the election results. Republicans aren’t the ones throwing the temper tantrums over how the right “stole the election”. If you still believe this then it is YOU who are the sore loser.
Nice try to Psyochologize and stereotype all non-Obama supporters. The fact is, this man non-Obama supporters are not upset that “they lost”, according to your rash judgmentalism, but rather, they are upset that Obama is destroying the very heritage of our nation by turning it into a South American style government.
Is this what America wanted? I’m sure not. Is this what Elle wants? I hope not, so where is your outcry to this man’s radical leftism? Where is your outcry to Obama’s promoting communism in his administration by the likes of his over 32 czars in only 9 months, government takeover of the private industry, and giving prominence to avowed communists like van Jones and Holdren? Where is your outcry when he says one thing to Americans, then does the opposite? Is this your idea of “winning big”? We’re not upset that we “lost” an election. We’re upset that Obama is on a tear like the tazmanian devil in only 9 months ripping apart our constitution. Have you noticed that Obama now supports measures of the Patriot Act? Are you going to scream all over him like you did Bush? No, because you’re a political idealog who regurgitates everything with a D at the end of it.

If you thought Bush could be criticized and jeered but Obama cannot be, YOU are the one who is a racist.
You are also a PC coward to let the color of a man’s skin, and not his policies, determine whether he can be disagreed with or not.

1)CHRIS DODD of Connecticut, Sen. KENT CONRAD of North Dakota; both Democrats which have been violated Senate ethics rules because received some money from leader of Countrywide and AIG.
2) CHARLES RANGEL- Democrats REP. NYC(my district); he has become the focus of several ethics scandals over matters ranging from the relatively petty to the potentially serious. Last summer, he admitted he had neglected to pay some taxes by failing to report $75,000 in rental income earned from a beachfront villa he owns in the Dominican Republic and improperly used congressional stationery to solicit donations and sought contributions from companies that had business before the Ways and Means Committee.
3) Taxes cheater TIM GEITHNER

7)Rod Blago(D-ILL Gov.-Criminal to sale the seat)
8)Rahm Emmanuel(D-ILL Rep.-misleading of the Obama’s seat)
9) Obama said “I’ll clean “Bush’s brain” at White House” when GWB was 43th President of USA.
I can describe even 100 more Democratic craps, but I stop it here.
GET RID OF NANCY PELOSI IN 2010. THIS IS SO MANY AMERICAN’S TRUE HOPE.

Bush Jr was never, ever, heckled during a joint session of Congress. Not once. No modern president ever has. When speaking to Congress, they are serving the Constitutional role of co-equal branch and heckling them is akin to burning the flag to anyone who knows and respects our form of government. You clap, you sit stonely, you grumble or hiss. You do not shout down the Executive branch when they legally have the floor.

“But in your eyes, he’s black so there’s no POSSIBLE way he could have earned it.
That’s partisan.”
I see, calling his actions as elitist is partisan, but calling us racists for disagreeing with his actions. Believe me…if he’s purple and continues to grow government, then most of america will continue to disagree.
We disagreed with Bush too, but Obama has accelerated the growth to in his own words “unsustaiable rate”. And yet it continues. SO now we are saying to our congress – STOP SPENDING.
The race card has been played way too many times in the last month. It doesn’t have the power to silence our legitimate disagreement. No one in this battle of “ides” brings up race –except the left.

Those who use the charge of racism so casually cheapen the meaning and damage the ligitimacy of those who struggle with real racial bias. To many people, the term ‘boy’ doesn’t have the racial motivation that many people claim, and many times it says more about the biases of the accuser than the one who is being accused. Please think about the damage done to arguments of real racial inequality when using the racist label so mundanely.

Its getting scary everyday. I get this morbid feeling about the safety of President Obama.
I talk not of the Person, Mr Barack Obama, but the Office he represents.
What is happening to Americans? Why is the society so polarized and divided along Party line?
Why are decent and knowledgeable people allowing politicians to divide them for political gains?
Why is it that People find it difficult to see beyond the facade that is the cacophony of the the discordant tunes these Politicians are playing?
Why can’t we see that all the noise by Talk-show hosts is just to drive up rating while dividing the Country?
I am not an American and I can see through this smokescreen. Why can People be discerning enough to know the motivations of this Agents of division?
The Healthcare reform is not for the Obama Family. They are blessed enough to be able to foot their medical expenses.
Is it possible for us to think that over 70% of Americans can not access good and qualitative healthcare because of the exorbitant cost?
As they say, an healthy nation is a wealthy nation.
A country that could commit billions of Dollars to fighting a senseless war can not vote a quarter of that cost to guarantee its citizens access to Healthcare services.
This is sad.
My intuition tells me that this is not about Americans not being their neighbors’ keepers, it is about ensuring the President Obama fails, so that the Democratic party can look bad in 2010.
With Political powers snatched from The Rights in 2008, they can’t wait to get it back even if it means turning the gullible Citizens against their President.

Ministry of Truth = ABC, NBC ,CBS, PBS
Look it up folks. For the longest time these folks controlled our minds, controlled our elections and this nation.
Now with the internet and fox, they have no hope staying the course.
CBS is now putting the Acorn story on the front page, all the others, nope.
The Acorn rep was told they were going to use 13 year old prostitutes, do any of you liberals have any morals?
I don’t care if it was a setup, these folks were not in on that, and they condoned it.
If Acorn was wronged, then why did they fire the employees’?
How can any of you condone that?

Joe Wilson broke the “rules” and apologized. Because of his action, the bill has been changed to prohibit subsidizing illegal immigrants. You might not like his methods, but the results speak for themselves.
I don’t understand all the hand-wringing over legitimate criticism of this administration. Where have you people been for the last 6 years? Did you not see how the left de-legitimized Bush to the point that when the market fell, he was practically powerless to act? They actually made a movie about how to assassinate him! Were you not worried then? Talk about cheapening the discourse. Give me a break.

Posted by: Dee2008 | September 16, 2009, 8:09 am 8:09 am

Nacilbuper , Why are you so niave? The democrates started a Political war when Obama said get in their faces. When he told the Union members to be violent at the Health “Reform” rallies. What is the talk about a private Army? Its not a Red vs. Blue problem, he has aspirations of changing the vary foundation of the USA. There is talk about about changing the consitution. Changing term limits for the president. Back in April the government wants to be able to turn off, the internet. Why? If I wanted to take over a country from the inside, thats what I would do. Nacilbuper, your ideas are full of holes. I wish he was actually behind the common folk like you think, but he is not.

Mr. Wilson did apologize privately to Rhom Emmanuel, however the next day he went on t.v. and said He didn’t know that the two bills he referred to were defeated however, he still felt the president was lying and would not back down. What kind of an apology is that? Also, his u-tube indicates otherwise, so he did deserve to be sanctioned. You can disagree with our president but there is a time and a place.

Technically B.Hussein Obama didn’t “lie” (kinda like B.Clinton didnt have “sex” with Lewinski) – there will be no “Illegals” when Obama is done. The amnesty he is about to grant to all these criminals here illegally in our country will take care of that. 10 million aliens will instantly become democrats…er…citizens. This will secure not only the next 8 years for B.Hussein, but a mere 2/3rds vote from a majority democrat congress on a constitutional amendment to term limits, and he will be President (effectively ruler of the World) for life. Now what is really creepy is, in numerology – Barack Hussein Obama = 666! Freeky! Is Obama the AntiChrist? I’m starting to think so.

If it’s true that squeaky wheel gets the oil, then people need to speak up and out. It is unacceptable to allow these anti-American racists to dominate the conversation and to hijack legislation designed to help those who are in need. Once again this great nation is the laughingstock of the world- and it is the “can’t be right for being wrong” Rush Limbaugh et al that is sending this country into a downward spiral.

You really have to feel sorry for the citizens of South Carolina. Look what sorry individuals they have governing their State.Governor Mark Sanford and Cracker Joe.It really makes me wonder what kind of school system they have there. I find it appalling that anyone ,anywhere would laud Ignoramus Wilson as a “hero”.President Carter is correct to say that this fringe element is racist. Those of us who are with the President will deal with these sore Losers and give us the change that we voted for. I find it incomprehensible that these ignorant, backwoods rubes didn’t say a word when GW Bush bankrupted the country with His phony War. They sat silent for EIGHT long years, yet they scream, march, carry vicious ,vitriolic signs and bellow like wounded water buffaloes after only Eight Months. South Carolina is to be pitied for the sorry image their legislators portray.
