“The Gloves are Off”
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies Reports: Michelle Obama says she is ready to campaign for her home town. The First Lady leaves for Copenhagen tomorrow evening, and from the moment she arrives, she will begin lobbying for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. She, White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, and TV mega mogul Oprah Winfrey will try to meet with every one of the 100+ International Olympic Committee members. “The gloves are off!” the First Lady declared with a smile. She spoke with a handful of reporters in the State Dining room at White House, and relayed a story from last weekend’s G20 Summit in Pittsburgh. At the spouses dinner she hosted, she said she greeted the first lady of Brazil then, “I said, I’m gonna hug you now, and then I’m going after you. And she said ‘you too.’” Rio, Madrid and Toyko are among the final cities hoping to host. Mrs. Obama likened the next few days, to final days of a campaign. “People are making up their minds until the very end. And that one conversation or you know, one example or illustration that connects could make the difference,” she said. “We’re just not gonna assume that the decision is made, so that no matter what the outcome is we’ll feel as country, as a team, that we’ve done everything we can to bring it home.” That’s very much why the President decided he too should join the team on the ground in Denmark. The President will take a red-eye flight on Thursday night and spend just a few hours on the ground. Jarrett says the administration has already been involved in the pitch at a number of levels. The President, Vice President and First Lady have been working the phones. Last week at the UN, Jarrett met with Tony Blair, who won the games for London in 2012. The two spoke for an hour about strategy. “He shared with me his perspective on the home stretch and what was necessary to be successful,” Jarrett said. Mrs. Obama said she will bring a personal touch to her presentation, talking about her own ties to Chicago and why it would make the best host city. Her own home is just blocks from where many of the events would be held. She and the President will speak separately, then take questions.
“We’re not going to do a joint poem or anything. We’re not gonna sing together.” she quipped. Asked about Oprah Winfrey’s role, Mrs. Obama laughed and said, “She’s Oprah. Enough said.” Winfrey is part of the delegation arriving on Wednesday morning. The First Lady says the TV talk show host will meet with IOC members, speaking about Chicago as both a business woman and resident. “She brings the personal, the professional, and she brings that extra star quality that is important,” the first lady said. Mrs. Obama said that the Olympics celebrates much of what she supports as first lady: health, fitness and nutrition. “The Olympics will be such an important jumping off point for those conversations,” she said. “We can talk about sports, we can talk about nutrition, we can talk about what it means to be an athlete? What’s a paralympian?” The Paralympics, games for athletes with physical and visual disabilities, have a prominent place in Chicago’s bid. Mrs. Obama said to her, that is one of the most exciting aspects of these games. “My father was disabled and I think what it would have mean for him to see someone in his shoes compete,” she explained, “Kids need to see that and that needs to be celebrated just as much, if not more.” Asked about if the President would lose face, should Chicago not get chosen, Mrs. Obama shrugged. “You’re darned if you do, you’re darned if you don’t. I’d rather be on the side of doing. I’d rather be on the side of doing.” she said, “This is not one of those that you worry about what happens if not, you know, this is the country’s bid. This is not the President’s bid, this is everyone pulling for this.”

Perhaps we should be asking them NOT to come to the US, as it will cost us a ton of money to host.

no, michelle. not everyone IS pulling for this. looks like, according to a poll released today, about half of chicagoans don’t want the games to happen in their town.
wouldn’t it be ironic if barack obama’s first big lose as president was over the olympics? ouch.

Catman…..No…….maybe YOU should have asked Reagan who shipped your job and the last administration to bring your job back. The President is attempting to “straighten” the Decades of “Mess” the Republicans have created in the name of “the richer get richer, and the poor gets poorer”…Ummm….a 2 (two) class of people. The shipping of your jobs started in the 1980′s, not 2009, when the President took office. And the Olympics will bring billions of dollars to the Midwest, far more than the investment for it. Now, don’t you think this is good for our country?

“I’m gonna hug you and then next week I’m coming after you.” Yep, stay classy, Michelle. I know it was said jokingly but it still shows a lack of refinement that bothers me in a First Lady. Should we not want the best applicant to win?
And should we not root for a nonwestern nation? It’s been in America or Canada several times in recent years– LA, Calgary, Atlanta, Salt Lake City. Give South America a chance for a change.
Me, I’m rooting for Rio, because the Olympics deserve better than to be a patronage cesspool in Chicago politics for the next 8 years.

No again…. Most Chicagoans Wants the Olympics there. It’s a beautiful city with ethnicity and cultural, besides that grand lake that serves us well. I hope the Olympics are held in the U.S….. Chicago would be great… why wouldn’t You want that!
Posted by: sara | September 28, 2009, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm
The Olympics would generate billions for our financially strapped, recession country…..I don’t find Chicago no bigger a cesspool than any other big city….. the smaller, southern cities have the mayor, the brother, uncle, sister, brother, in-laws, etc….the cesspool is there, and no one is Talking. Yes, it’s a CESSPOOL.

Now, back to the story…..just “real” ladies talking and rooting for their country! The city just happens to be one that is being considered. That’s all.

what a waste of money. I thought Obama is supposed to be representing the United States- not Chicago? I hope the city of Chicago, or at least the Olympic Committee, is paying ALL the costs for this boondoogle (flight, security, shopping, food, fuel, etc.) With the economy, wars, his police state tactics, flu scare, and everything else going on in the world and the USA THIS is what Obama is focusing on?

I just want to personally thank our President and First Lady for caring enough to try to bring the Olympics to our country. It is such an honor and privilege to host. They should be thanked for bringing jobs, business and building infrastructure in this country.
After reading so many of the above comments, I’m still surprised at the nature of the comments I see which have so little to do with the real issues of bringing the games to the USA?????

While the General in Afghanistan is waiting on more troops from obama, obama decides there are more important things to tend to – like lobbying for the olympics. I find this outrageous. He should be working night and day figuring out what his policy is regarding Afghanistan and helping our troops. One more of our troops killed over there and it is on him and no one else. Sure hope his is having a great time in Copenhagen.
Posted by: Jenny | September 28, 2009, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm
BenneMarie, there’s nothing wrong with the president championing our nation’s bid for the Olympics. However, a last-minute personal trip to Copenhagen at great public expense seems unnecessary to me. We have managed to secure several Olympics in the past without a personal presentation by a sitting president and I suspect we could do it again.
Actually, President Obama’s cheerleading for Chicago is something I understand and sympathize with. The man grew up in a variety of places and did not put down solid roots in one community that he could truly call home. I did the same. So when he settled in somewhere as an adult, he has become quite sentimentally attached to his adopted home, Chicago. I did the same when I finally was in control of where I lived and put down roots in my own town, where I have lived for decades now. The president has real affection for Chicago that is as strong as that of a true native son.
That being said, I do not like to see him let that affection for his “hometown” cloud his judgment of the proper role of a president in regards to this sort of thing. Taping a speech to be played at the presentation or making a few phone calls seems a better way for the president to be involved without making this HIS project. As he said two weeks ago, he has other projects to focus his attention on.

Chicago-style politics, at its worst. Talk about your perfect symmetry: the President is going to lobby a corrupt organization (the International Olympic Committee) to site their competition in a corrupt city (Chicago).

Who has time to figure out a war policy when you can be coordinating the synchronized swimming events for 2016.
We cannot afford the Olympics. Ever place that has hosted it has lost billions. Chicago billionaire real estate moguls are the only winners. China — with a fixed currency — lost $60 billion, and their cities are run by Daley’s and corrupt unions.
The US cannot afford this. Please tell the honchos in D.C. that the taxpayer does not want to pay for more no-show union jobs, Tony Resko Real Estate Ponzi Scheme, and Ron Blagoevich summer olympics.
Stop the spending. Give it to Brazil.

I was there on vacation. Chicago is such an armpit.
Scores of school kids were victims of such violence last year. The response? Close down the schools and bus them down to city hall, with ACORN, and demand tougher gun laws.
Illinios s/ have “shall issue” conceal carry laws plus “stand your ground.” That would help but would never happen b/c Chicago dominates state politics.

Posted by: Chicago Olympics 2016 | September 28, 2009, 11:45 pm 11:45 pm
I don’t see a reason why the developed countries need to go after Olympics bid even after studies have shown that most countries lose money than make money.
US (4), UK (3), Germany (2), Greece (2), Australia (2), France (2) have had multiple chances of hosting the Olympics. In fact Europe has hosted 16 of the 26 completed games. I suggest that every alternate Olympics be awarded to non-G8 nations. They should avoid bidding going forward. China got it in 2008, 2016 should go to Brazil. Africa, South America hasn’t hosted one. Let them have 2016 & 2020.
Olympics in developing nations is a good way of rallying support to build quality infrastructure.

Isn’t that cute. It would be nice for U.S. to host the Olympics, but Chicago? I think Barack needs to send a special envoy to Chicago since he is so found of them. a kid beaten to death by a mob and about one school kid a day getting killed by violence.

Hey Barry,
Be sure as part of your presentation to have Arne Duncan (Sec. of Education, also will be participating in this boondoggle, along with Sec. of Trans. Ray LaHood) a video of the 16 year-old honor student who was beat to death with 4′x8′ piece of lumber (complemented with kicking and stomping). Apparent motive? Refusal to join a gang.
Great city you got there, Barry. Obama cronies (along with the Obamas once out of office) will make a killing if Chicago is selected.
Perhaps you and Michelle should treat this event in Copenhagen as a “job interview” – Both of you will have much more free time available come 2013.

After a day of media reports about the Obamas visiting Copenhagen to represent for Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, the Drudge Report puts up a link to a video, which is wholly in keeping with the site’s theme of trying to link President Obama to black nationalism, radicalism and violence committed by African-Americans. Classy. (Eyeroll and gut check.) Human violence is a terrible thing, a tragedy we haven’t overcome. It happens in every state in America, and in every large city. It’s sad. We need to keep working toward overcoming violence. To exploit the tragedy for partisan reasons out of dislike and vitriol toward the president or blue state large cities in general, in connection with an Olympic bid of all things, is totally in keeping with the hypocrisy, cruelty, lack of substantial ideas and arguments, lack of moral integrity and self-centeredness of certain tribes that tend to identify with right wing politics, political divisiness, warmongering and ginned up rhetoric.

Romney ran the Salt lake City Olumpics and they broke even. Most of the Olympics have resulted in huge deficits for the cities. But I’m sure the Dems will provide a bailout to Chicago. Wasn’t Obama suppossed to represent the US not just CHicago.

To Ryan C:
Please get your facts straight. Mitt Romney was hired as CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics after the allegations of bribery were exposed. They were running a shortfall at the time. They ended up clearing a profit of 100 million dollars, and Romney contributed 1 million dollars himself. Shortly after September 2001, with all the security challenges, it was a very successful Winter Olympics. If Barack Obama had accomplished the same feat, he would deserve credit and praise regardless of political party, don’t you agree?

This country does not need to invest in hosting an Olympics, at this time. It is the wrong thing to do, given the Obama budget, and the public should oppose it.

We’re fortunate to have a President who not only addresses the major national challenges [such as the healthcare issue], but also is trying to lead our country to a place in which we can be proud. Olympics in the U.S. would showcase our athletes, encourage hope and national unity. It’ll also provide jobs.
Not sure why anyone would find hosting the Olympics in the U.S. a negative action. Guess that’s what the conservative talk show hosts are pumping this week. I wonder why the conservatives aren’t more patriotic and proud of their country. Funny, that’s been their mantra.

This is an untrue assertion. Once Obama begins acting as a fiscally responsible leader whose priorities are in-line with the general public (note majority lack of support for spending, healthcare, cap-and-trade policies, etc.) and when it becomes clear that national security is of importance to him (has he made any statements regarding the recent foiled terrorist efforts? What is plan for Afghanistan?) and when he begins to put interests of citizens ahead of his own/his party, he will have greater support from Americans.
As for the Olympics (as stated previously), Chicago is the U.S. home of corruption and sleazy politics. Obama, Daley, Rezco, Jackson, and cronies cannot be trusted.

About the legendary corruption of the Daley/Obama/Blagojevich/Rezko political machine…..
—A key member of Mayor Richard Daley’s Olympic committee has a LONG BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP WITH A DEVELOPER vying to build the billion-dollar Olympic Village, the grandest piece of Chicago’s plans for the 2016 Summer Games.
Chicago 2016 committee member Michael Scott also served as a consultant to the developer on a condominium project near the proposed athletes village, A DEVELOPMENT THAT WOULD INCREASE IN VALUE if the city wins the Olympics.
Scott, who negotiated key components of the $1.2 billion Olympic Village plan, said his business relationship with the developer, Gerald Fogelson, does not interfere with his role with the bid team. Chicago 2016 officials declined to say whether Scott’s relationship with Fogelson was a problem, with Daley’s Olympic team POISED TO SPEND BILLIONS of dollars in coming years.—

Do you suppose that spending more on the military than all the other nations of the world contributes to our national debt? but there’s no mention of the ever-increasing cost of our runaway defense budget in this column. How puzzling!
Posted by: v | September 29, 2009, 11:28 am 11:28 am
Bring back a progressive tax structure.
The rise of ridiculous pay for CEOs and financial funds managers came about with Reagan drastically reducing tax rates for the wealthy. Before that time, taxes for salaries and compensation packages in the millions of dollars were so high that it was considered a waste to offer them. Taxes essentially put a cap on mega-income.
If we brought back a progressive tax – taxing those making millions at a rate of seventy percent or more once again – we’d end runaway executive pay. We might also have enough revenue coming in from standard taxes to get away from the gimmick of lotteries. The income gap between the rich and the poor would narrow.

The decline of our intellectual capital, the rise of “greed is good” as a way of life, the abandonment of the less fortunate all stem from the Reagan years. Our manufacturing base declined, our dependence on the sketchy financial instruments of Wall Street increased, and our government’s efforts at fiscal restraint were abandoned. If you want a change in economic values, we need to finally turn our backs on the Reagan years.
That’s why we elected President Obama.

Spending on wars of choice, allowing huge tax cuts for the rich, deregulating the financial sector are some of the prima facia causes of the current situation.
The more ominous fact behind the history though is the steadyerosion of the American people through their representatives to stem the tide of the corporatation of American democracy.
Outsourcing jobs overseas, the erosion of the quality of education, the increase in personal debt are very related.
We have to stop the corporate takeover of our country.
That’s why we elected President Obama.

“If we brought back a progressive tax – taxing those making millions at a rate of seventy percent or more once again – we’d end runaway executive pay.”
a.) What business is it of yours what these people make? How does it affect you in your everyday life? Would your personal condition improve if these evil rich people are taxed at higher rates?
b.) What about pro athletes and actors/actresses compensated at similar rates?
c.) The wealthy you seek to tax will simply move themselves (and their capital – and potential tax revenue and jobs) somewhere else.
“The income gap between the rich and the poor would narrow.”
This is true. But, have ever received a job from a “poor” person?

“He’s The POTUS!!! What’s wroong with him
promoting a USA city. I wonder how som of you would feel if it was your city.

Are you serious none of us are aware he is POTUS! Thanks for the update. There is nothing wrong with him promoting a USA city for the Olympics but Chicago? A city known for its corrupt government and crime. More than 30 students were killed last school year, and the city could exceed that number this year. Why not fix the problems of this city instead of exposing its violence and corruption on a world stage. If the President and First lady want to campaign for the Olympics that is okay with me, but don’t use my tax dollars to fly there, what about fiscal responsibility and Carbon Footprints? Does any of this matter or is it all just Political pandering the Democrats always use to mislead the American People. They are slowly taking away your freedom, by controlling Financial Institutions, Auto Industry, Capping pay for CEO’s. Wanting to control your Health Care, and finish destroying American Industry with Cap and Trade legislation that will make it even harder for US Industry to compete on a world stage. And apparently Obama’s strategy in Afghanistan is to bury his head in the sand and ignore the problem and hope it goes away while Brave Men and Women are dying! But your right MR.. President the Olympics are top Priority!

Obama called the Afghan War the “just” war, and heavily criticized Bush for NOT sending enough troops. Now he is about to flip-flop, although no circumstances there have changed. Along with filibuster-proof majorities in Congress, the Dems hold all the power in Washington now.
War is over, if Barry wants it.

*************
Right – and he only supported more troops and winning the Afghan war after Hillary Clinton said the same thing during the primaries. obama saw how correct Hillary was and how popular her statement was that he used it himself. Now that he’s president, his true colors are showing – that he never believed what he said in the first place. Actions are louder than words.

I didn’t know she was from Copenhagen? (That’s the way the article reads (at the start));)

A Democrat raising the bar for government takeover of healthcare??
—Forget the 60 votes needed to prevent a Senate filibuster — or even the 51 votes needed to pass the measure via budget reconciliation.
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) now thinks 65 votes is a figure “that would provide him a comfort level in terms of establishing a level of bipartisan support” for a health care reform bill, the Lincoln Journal-Star reports.
Said Sen. Nelson: “I think anything less than that would challenge its legitimacy.”—

If you think this isn’t already a done deal you’re mistaken.
Bet the farm on it.

I’m SURE the POTUS has something better to do than to lobby the IOC on behalf of Chicago, the corrupt city that spawned this junior-pol-turned-prez-by-the-media.
It’s hilarious that a US city would even want to host the Olympics, unless they are looking at this as a way to soak their residents for taxes to pay for this godawful mess they call the Olympics.
The longer he is in office, the less and less I am impressed with him. At the rate he is going, one of Stalin’s spawn could run on the Republican ticket and win in 2012.

what should be known about this little trip to Denmark with oprah, valerie Jarrett and Mrs. o,is that Valerie Jarrett owns the property that the olympics would be held on if they were to be excepted. This whole administration is crooked as a snake. I believe in hope and change: I HOPE the next couple of years go by real fast so we can CHANGE this crooked administration. You could not even begin to compare George Bush with obama. At least maybe george was more discrete and obama slams it right in your face, as to say, NA NA NA NA NA NA. See what I can do? Spend the RICH MAN’S MONEY.

Actually, what should be known about this little trip to Denmark … and all the crazy smears and jeers on this thread is that a lot of it is parroted gunk. Fox News hosts, contributors and guests have used President Obama’s trip to Copehagen to support the U.S. bid to host the Summer Olympics as an excuse to smear, attack, twist, distort and distract both Obama and Chicago. Sean Hannity says “it sounds” like Obama “is more concerned about bringing the Olympics to Chicago than winning the war in Afghanistan”– which is ridiculous. Brent Bozell asserts that the President’s's trip to Copenhagen “is evidence that this man just cannot stay away from the klieg lights.” Bret Baier talks about the “carbon footprint” of Obama’s trip as if he’s concerned about carbon footprints. Meanwhile Michelle Malkin and Matt Drudge have callously linked the murder of a teenager in Chicago to the Olympic bid to exploit tragedy for divisive partisan purposes. Sounds very familiar. Wow, you dissenters are in high-class company (eyeroll.) And did you hear Steele’s ridiculous comments today? According to him, the fact that Obama will spend 18 hours traveling and speaking and traveling back in order to promote an event that has the opportunity to generate $22.5 billion in economic activity, and create the equivalent of 315,000 new full-time jobs, means that he has abandoned his policy agenda — yet Steele doesn’t have the kahunas to say that going to Copenhagen is a mistake.
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has said, “I think the people in the IOC want to understand the level of the commitment of the host country. Does the host country really care? Is this going to be a high priority? And nothing says that like having the presence of the leader of that country and, particularly, in the case of Barack Obama.”
Olympics consultant Christine Brennan, on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” said in regards the President’s trip to Copenhagen: “The president didn’t have much of a choice — he’s from Chicago. … The IOC members will want to shake his hand, take their picture with him …” Of course, it also sounds like Rio is the current favorite.
Oh, and btw, Habitat Corporation is a property management company. It doesn’t actually own the properties that it manages. Jarrett’s income is derived from the management services her company provides. If the apartments are bulldozed to build olympic facilities, she stands to LOSE money. For those claiming “Valerie Jarrett owns the property that the olympics would be held on”, please cite your sources, substantiate your claims and show us the money trail, or admit you’re making stuff up.

So you take one line out of my opinion and call it funny? Funny when was it the function of the Federal Government to set Pay Scales for CEO’s?
