Treasury Department Inspector General to Look Into IRS Oversight of ACORN, Other Groups

Jake Tapper and Matt Jaffe report:

Treasury Department Inspector General J. Russell George disclosed today that his office is initiating a review of the IRS's oversight of tax-exempt non-profit organizations and "will review internal IRS referral processes with regard to nonprofit fraud investigations."

The Department will also look into "527" organizations which are allowed to advocate for political causes but not for or against candidates or parties. Good government groups complain that 527s, which unlike parties and candidates can receive unlimited funds, are a violation of the spirit if not the letter of campaign finance laws; an example of a 527 is the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Treasury will review IRS oversight of 527s and make sure "that Section 527 political organizations publicly disclose their activities in a complete and timely manner."

The announcement was made in response to a request from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine — the ranking Republicans on the House and Senate government oversight committees — for the Treasury Department and other government agencies to review their ties to ACORN, following undercover videotapes posted at Biggovernment.com showing two young conservative journalists posing as a prostitute and a pimp receiving advice on how to skirt the law from ACORN employees.

You can read the letter HERE.

The IRS and Census Bureau have severed ties to ACORN in recent days, with Inspectors General from the Justice Department and Department of Housing and Urban Development also announcing they are reviewing grants to ACORN.

At a Senate Banking committee hearing today with Treasury official Herb Allison, who oversees TARP funds, Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana, asked if there has been any effort within the TARP program to ensure that taxpayer funds don't go to ACORN, since many TARP recipients have contracts with ACORN and its affiliated groups.

"We provided no funding to ACORN, Senator," Allison said. "They did participate in some counseling sessions.  They provided some counseling in the past.  We have no ties to ACORN at this point."

"I don't think you understood my question," Vitter said. "We give billions of dollars to these mega-institutions.  Many of them contract with ACORN.  Has there been any effort to within the TARP program to ensure that those taxpayer dollars that are going to those institutions do not flow to ACORN?"

Allison said Treasury officials would "go back and and consider… your suggestion.  I don't know what these companies have been doing with ACORN."

IG George should watch his back.
Obama has a habit of firing IG’s that investigate his friends.
Especially if anything leads back to him. But Obama is pretending ACORN was just a group in the neighborhood.
Kind of like Bill Ayers.

I think it’s curious that your example of a 527 is those swiftboaters. SEIU is a 527 and seems to be very involved with ACORN and the President’s agenda.

Obama is unaware that ACORN could get up to $8 billion from the stimulus.
That’s how important our money is to Obama.
Explains why Obama looks the other way while his campaign supporters like Goldman Sachs get millions in bonues.

Hello whitewash.

Whatever taxpayer money slated to go to ACORN will probably just be funneled to other radical groups like SEIU.
Or maybe the NEA so they can design new propaganda for Obama.
Our money is gone.

So who appointed this guy?
Is he here to sweep it under the rug or actually investigate?
Not that there will be any records left by the time they get around to looking into this bottomless cesspool.
How about we start looking into the Obama school indoctination programs happening all over the country too?

Sounds good. Let’s start with “religious” organizations.

I love the administration is using their ties to the corrupt ACORN to target groups that lean Republican or right-of-center! Instead of investigating ACORN throughly and prosecuting them accordingly (like using RICO statutes) they “expand” the investigation and go after their political apponents. Classic!

-This is hardly a coincidence: Obama helped train Acorn’s leaders in how to play this game.-
17 years…Barry said so himself.

“Until recently, volunteers who logged on to serve were being referred to ACORN groups.” posted by Squidgey
Now isn’t that interesting. If you read the 49 page transcript of the infamous NEA phone call, you will see that, in addition to “suggesting” that the artists promote Obama’s agenda on health care and such, the adminisration hacks were trying to persuade the artists to drive traffic to serve.

Sen. David Vitter uses prostitutes and now he wants ACORN investigated for giving fake advice to prostitutes? Maybe he’s upset because they did not give them housing. Vitter is a hypocrite.

There are lot’s of hypocrites in government buddy…but I don’t want my tax dollars promoting criminal activity. Why do you?

I hope they mean ALL 527 groups…for heaven’s sake people, there is a book on ebay on how to form one. Speaking of prostitutes, all you need is millions from corporations to further their agenda by lobbying. *Nod* to Bob on the churches. I don’t like my tax money going into that fraud Pat Robertson’s Operation Blessing either.

THE DANGERS OF A SINGLE PARTY GOVERNMENT!
You may not like Rush, but he puts some facts out there that Obama would just as soon you not know about.
I am talking about the sound clips of someone under Valerie Garrett making calls to get the NEA (which thrives on grant money) to do art in support of the Obama agenda.
Under any other administration the media would blitz such an unconstitutionality! However, government run healthcare (and gov takeover of private industry) is unconstitutional itself, so is it safe to assume the media is in bed with our freefall into a socialist state?
