What Does the President Need to Do Next Wednesday?

The President will give his second speech to a joint session of Congress next Wednesday, in which he will try to seal the deal and push health care reform.

It was 16 years ago this month, incidentally, that another president gave an address to a joint session of Congress to push for health care reform — an anniversary this White House has no intention of celebrating, given the ultimate fate of that effort.

Our poor President. Now that he’s announced his Big Historic Speech (No. 14? 15?), he’s got to figure out what to say. Just dont talk about malaise!

The President needs to stop giving stimulus money to homeless sex offenders in Florida:
“A slice of $7.5 million in federal stimulus money is being offered to help homeless sex offenders and predators living under the Julia Tuttle Causeway to cover rent, housing and utilities.
“The money comes from federal funds designated for homeless people in Miami-Dade, but convicted sex offenders who meet income requirements are eligible, said Ron Book, chairman of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, who has led efforts to find housing for the bridge dwellers.
“Under the program, participants can receive financial assistance for up to 18 months, but must be recertified every 90 days.
“The camp, which has become a national embarrassment for Miami, is emptying.”
Well, we’ve got change, but not much to be hopeful for.

The President should also stop suggesting how school kids can influence their Mom and Dad on ObamaCare:
President Obama’s Address to Students Across America September 8, 2009
PreK-6 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America
Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009
Before the Speech:
• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:
Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?
• Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.
• Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?
During the Speech:
• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?
• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

The President should take a cue from the Republicans Contract with America. Short bullet points covering the key issues.
The opposition to health care reform has been almost exclusively lies and spreading confusion. The deliberate misrepresentation of what is fully defined legal language has been a killer.
And it is clear that bipartisanship is not an option. The Republicans on the Gang of Six (2 out of 3 of them) have now admitted they have been negotiating in bad faith merely to stall ANY reform at all. May as well hope for a good deal with Kim Jong Il – he has the same track record and similar rhetoric at this point.
Democrats are not filibuster proof in the Senate, but Snowe and perhaps Collins are still responsible Senators probably willing to play ball. Give them a seat at the table, shut out all the other Republicans – who have already clearly stated they’re voting no regardless of what compromises you offer – and get it done. The Democratic caucus is actually independent minded with enough diversity of opinion to have real debate and develop a representative bill without trying to include Republicans who now seem proud to admit they were lying about any intent to get any reform done.

“Reaching those goals is the aim of a strategy that we call America 2000, a crusade for excellence in American education, school by school, community by community.

And while you’re at it, help a little brother or sister to learn, or maybe even Mom or Dad. Let me know how you’re doing. Write me a letter — and I’m serious about this one — write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals.” President Bush, 1991 to “millions” of students
No one – not one far left nut – was ranting and pulling lines out of context to suggest President Bush was subverting our kids when he pushed his Administration’s education agenda. The paranoid ravings of the Obama haters are unprecedented; Obama’s actions certainly are not.

If he announced that he was proposing tort reform, interstate sales of health insurance, and tax deductions for the purchase of individual policies, he would get a thunderous ovation from both sides of the aisle (except for the kookiest leftists in his party).
With that as a framework he could readily address pre-existing conditions and subsidies for insurance for the truly needy.
He won’t do this. He actually believes that mankind’s problems are best solved by government, and above all he wants a world in which no amount of creativity, diligence and honest hard work can allow a man to provide better health care for his family than that which he could get if he were a useless, parasitick slacker.

While in the House chamber, Obama needs to give a shout-out to tax cheat Charlie Rangel—as well as “Charlie’s Angels.”
—Congressman Rangel has been arrogant in refusing to discuss how, as THE MAN WHO WRITES THIS COUNTRY’S TAX LAWS, HE FAILED TO REPORT OVER $1 MILLION IN OUTSIDE INCOME and $3 million in business transactions as required by the House, lapses under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
“I recognize that all of you have an obligation to ask questions knowing that there’s none of you smart enough to frame it in such a way that I’m going to respond,” Rangel said.
There may be a reason for Rangel’s arrogance. CBS 2 HD has discovered that since ethics probes began last year the 79-year-old congressman has given campaign donations to 119 members of Congress, INCLUDING THREE OF THE FIVE DEMOCRATS on the House Ethics Committee who are charged with investigating him.—

He could announce that he has abandoned his stated goal of ultimately achieving a single-payer system, having been made aware of the horrors inflicted on people under such a system in first-world, industrialized Britain:
““Forecasting death is an inexact science,”they say. Patients are being diagnosed as being close to death “without regard to the fact that the diagnosis could be wrong.
“As a result a national wave of discontent is building up, as family and friends witness the denial of fluids and food to patients.”

I doubt it. Most of the Democrats are fully aware of all the solid CBO analysis work done on these proposals and know they are just a drop in the bucket. Nothing for those with pre-existing conditions. The data show minimal savings (interstate sales – if a larger market helps, why doesn’t CA with a population equal to the 20 smallest states have a great insurance market?) that will not halt the 10%+ per year increases in costs. Tort reform has been done in 34 states again and again CBO analysis shows minimal additional savings to be had (both from reductions in malpractice premiums and reduction in defensive medicine/total procdures ordered in states with the strictest tort reform).
He would be rightly booed by anyone in Congress familiar with the subject beyond bumpersticker slogans for abandoning any effort at real reform.

Really? And yet the UK has a longer life expectancy than the US. Why is that? Do you think your horror story might be a bit exaggerated? Sorta like that editorial that claimed if Stephen Hawkings was British the NHS would have let him die as not worth saving?
And for the record, Obama CLEARLY is not proposing a single payer system, he never has proposed one, and NONE of the proposals in Congress – NOT ONE- has proposed anything like a single payer system.
(And why are you bringing up both single payer and the UK’s NHS – which is nationalized, not single payer? Talk about trying to spread confusion.)

The biggest government sponsored health ammendment since Medicare, was George W. Bush’s Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act
enacted in 2003, it produced the largest overhaul of Medicare in the public health program’s 38-year history.
The MMA was signed by President George W. Bush on December 8, 2003, after passing in Congress by a close margin.
One month later, the ten-year cost estimate was boosted to $534 billion, up more than $100 billion over the figure presented by the Bush administration during Congressional debate. The inaccurate figure helped secure support from fiscally conservative Republicans who had promised to vote against the bill if it cost more than $400 billion.
George W. Bush must be a socialist fascist, who want’s big government interfering in your lives, taking away your money to help those with government paid healthcare, and taking away your freedom.

He could address the following facts:
Nearly nine out of 10 Americans say they have coverage—and large majorities of them are happy with it. Of the 46 million uninsured, 9.7 million are not U.S. citizens; 17.6 million have annual incomes of more than $50,000; and 14 million already qualify for Medicaid or other programs. That leaves less than five million people truly uncovered out of a population of 307 million.
Then he could explain why we need such a radical change to a system that such a huge majority think is just fine.

The state’s population is irrelevant to the inquiry. The choices available are governed by what sort of mandates the legislatures impose.

OLD VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well-fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!
MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well-fed while
others are cold and starving.
CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a
table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.
How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green..’
Acorn stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’
Rev. Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.
Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an
immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is
confiscated by the Government Green Czar.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be
the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug-related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once
peaceful neighborhood.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2012.

history lesson?…. Presidents since Truman has tried to pass fair healthcare reform. Even good ole Richard Nixon [Republican]. Why? because it’s a social responsibility to assure the safety of the citizens of this country. Ronald Reagan in his 1964 campaign speech for Barry Goldwater
believed that government health insurance for senior citizens was a Trojan horse: the real goal was universal health care and then full-on socialism. So it was important to resist sentimental appeals: “Now, the advocates of this bill, when you try to oppose it, challenge you on an emotional basis. They say, ‘What would you do, throw these poor old people out to die with no medical attention?’ That’s ridiculous, and, of course, no one has advocated it.”
Four years later, Congress passed Medicare, the emblematic achievement of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society.

SHEEPLE, tort reform is a hand fed wedge issue given to you by corrupted, crooked elected officials.
Tort reform should be changed. of course our democratic friends would have problems doing it. ATLA is a large Democratic lobbying group claiming ownership of certain democratic senators and congressmen and women.
Amazingly, most SHEEPLE have no idea how important plaintif attorneys are.
Plaintif attorneys represent SHEEPLE who are other wise armless against giant corporate abuses.
Tort reform certainly needs to be addressed.
Again, SHEEPLE who believe Plaintif’s attorneys are all bad and need to be silenced are baaaaaaaainf (opining) against their own best interests.
If anyone cares to discuss tort reform on an intelligent basis. I would gladly participate in the discussion.

Gus, my point is that Obama has shown very bad judgment as a Senator and as president. And I am not at all opposed to health care reform; I have advocated it vigorously for years, including many times recently on this site. In a nutshell, I advocate eliminating the grotesque distortions in the markets for care and insurance that have been brought about by very ill-advised federal and state governmental interventions.

We should scrap this plan – calling 1000 pages a plan is a bit silly. I continue to push for looking at a creative, truly American plan introduced via a long dialog with the nation. I personally think John Mackey’s plan is a very good start.
That plan allows people to accumulate cash that is theirs to keep over a life time. Insurance is for high cost procedures. People are aware of what procedures cost and that drives down prices. Outrageous malpractice insurance costs are reduced. The cost of procedures is a direct result of that malpractice insurance going to insurance companies and lawyers.

I believe that most people do not even fully understand what the president is trying to do. Most don’t want to…they just want to keep making snide and ignorant remarks…instead why don’t they try discussing this in a rational way…If you would listen to Pres. Obama, he is not trying to kill grandma or make everyone go under a government plan. He wants everyone to have ins. and they should. And he is critizing these ins. companies which are a huge part of the problem. Our healthcare is way out of line, the cost is so high most people cannot afford it. We need to do something and instead of sitting down and calmly discussing it with him our Congress BOTH SIDES are acting like a bunch of spoiled 3 year olds. I do not blame the president, I blame them. Perhaps they should ALL be fired and new representatives who have brains and common sense be put in.

what would be great fun on Wednesday evening is for the Obama administration to invite all the folks the republicans have dismissed when they spoke of the problems they have had with insurance companies. Pack the galleries and let the republicans face the real americans who are in desparate need of health care. – not these right wing protesters who are paid by the insurance companies. Bet the republicians would fold quickly

We should start from scratch and not try to sneak this through in the night as the congress and whitehouse tried to do with the current mess.

so I can tell you one thing he will lose a lot more support if he throws no defense (as he has thrown his own constituentsw under the bus) for the public option away like the lives of the people that voted for him that he promised to FIGHT for a public option ( there has been absolutely no fight from him…which borders on disgusting)…
so now I hope he is not going to give a speech on why the public option isn’t important all the while ignoring tort reform and handing the insurance companies the keys to the city.
You better believe this is not progressives cutting their noses off to spite their faces… this is the people who voted for him (remember back when he ran on a public option and they VOTED FOR HIM) …this is not change … this is just self serving politics.
where is the man we voted for…that he promised over and over and over… he was going to listen but more importantly he was going to “fight for change”

this plan without a public option means load spin wins over facts again… and the insurance companies walk away with the keys to the city.
This is the third strike on base issues he used to get elected … so many voters stuck by him when he was challeneged in this election… when their issues get challenged at their core.
This plan without a public option is the worst of all issues…you get a win at the cost of so much going wrong.
stop listening to chris matthews and his political tacticianship… stick to what is right for the country that you were elected on. and stop the bologne spin from the other side…get angry for chrissake.

the thing that you obama haters have to realize is that you are in the minority. he was elected by those 50 and under and some of us who are older. We really don’t care what you want – you are outnumbered. You can say anything you want but when push comes to shove – he will be our president for the next several years and most likely will have 2 appointments on the Supreme Court which will be moderate to liberal. And we will get health care passed. If you look at the birth rates – you will see – that the world will soon belong to the miniorites that you hate so much. sweet dreams!

Posted by: cjr | September 3, 2009, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

President Obama needs to have “a plan” (not several versions) and he needs to explain “realistically” how we can pay for it. He says that “billions” could be saved by cutting out wasteful spending…which he has never clearly defined…and doesn’t tell us how much it is going to cost to add the nearly 47 million uninsured (many of whom have expensive pre-existing conditions, unemployed and can’t pay for insurance, or are hypocondriac’s that will go for every little thing).
I’m also concerned about the “Public Option.” Millions of Americans are insured by small business owners who can’t afford health care costs, so how is he going to stop them from dropping health care coverage and basically “forcing their employees into the Public Option, which wouldn’t be optional at that point? If private health insurance loses say 20-50% of those they cover, won’t they jack up their rates to cover down on those who departed? If that happens, will bigger businesses follow suit and now everyone will be on the Public Option? That is worst case scenario, but what is being done to prevent such a disaster? I understand the desire to use a Public Option to lower costs, but I think it will backfire and create more problems than it will solve.
I don’t envy the President or Congress, because if they force something on us without Republican support and it fails, the American people will only have one party to blame, since they are completely in charge. Democrats are very confident, but it could all go up in a plume of smoke if they aren’t careful.

Posted by: Gary | September 3, 2009, 5:11 pm 5:11 pm

If only Obama and Dems could give a consistant message.
Like saying everyone could choose their health plan and page 16 stated no private plan can issue any new policies or change existing ones.
Or saying the bill clearly states those here illegally will not receive benefits yet several pages later states the bill makes it illegal to ask for proof of citizenship. Don’t ask don’t tell.

Van Jones has been made a right wing target by Glenn Beck out of revenge. This is a hit job. Did you know that Beck, conspiracy-theorist-extraordinaire bizarrely actually asked, actually said out loud: “Will progressive pigs fly right out of Van Jones’ butt and pedal bicycles to” replace coal power?”
Huh?
As Howard Kurtz noted, Beck has been trashing Jones while “neglect[ing] to mention” that Jones co-founded (but is not longer an active part of) the group which is currently leading the boycott of his Fox News show.
Beck has also said : “Many people will ask you, ‘Well, if these things are so true, why is that only Glenn Beck is saying them?’ Believe me, I have asked myself that question many, many nights. Usually about 2:00am when I couldn’t sleep. Why is no one else asking these questions?”
Um, maybe cuz the voices are inside you’re head and you’re way out there, dude.
And News Corpse puts it: “This is the Fox News version of a “scorched earth” strategy. The problem is that Beck’s violence-ridden rhetoric is likely to produce some actual scorching. Perhaps a better analogy is that of Jonestown. Beck presents himself in much the same manner as the murderously manic Rev. Jim. Like Jim Jones, Beck regards himself as a lonely visionary and the target of unseen foes. And he ministers to a dangerously suggestible flock in whom he stirs ever increasing trepidation. Let’s just hope that reason prevails before tragedy ensues.”

Ryan C : The American people are uncovering the Obama puzzle piece by piece with or without the assistance of the mainstream media. Every week we are presented with a new piece of the puzzle and every week the Obama poll numbers fall to a new low. Three weeks ago we learned that that the Obama Justice Department dropped all charges against the New Black Panther Party which had blocked access to a voting station in Philadelphia, yet this same Obama Justice Department finds reasons to prosecute the CIA. Now we have the Van Jones scandal to add one more piece of the puzzle. Will anything convince a left wing ideologue such as yourself? Probably not, after all, 25% of Republicans stayed with Bush no matter what he did. But you can rest assured that level headed independents are quickly discovering what a far flung radical has been elected to office.

As goofy as Beck may be, every accusation he made about Van Jones is verifiable and indicates a serious judgement disorder on the part of Obama. The real issue here is why such issues are being uncovered by a right wing TV host , when we know that the mainstream media of pre-Obama would have done it first.

True Independents were just as critical of the Bush administration as they are now becoming of the Obama Administration. If that was not true, he would never have been elected. In fact you make my point. The rejection of the Republicans does not entitle the Obama administration to take a radical course any more than the French Revolution entitled those who followed to conduct a reign of terror.

Jim Jones, but he does have that theatrical misunderstood lonely visionary out in the woods all alone, crying , fearing for the people schtick down.)
Ryan C. pointed out that Meg Whitman has praised Van Jones’ work. I’ve heard him speak and read his book. It’s about eco-capitalism. Um. Capitalism. I like him, so if you yelled “fire” to me, I’d look at the match, shrug and blow it out– BUT I know other people, right wingers and people who were around during other “red scares” are nervous now. I have a right wing of my family so I actually know much of the whole thing that goes along with it– the rhetoric, the actual concern. I just don’t feel it or get it. I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but I think it’s gameplaying on Glenn Beck’s part and fearmongering and scorched earth.

1) Charts and graphs that display how the insurance companies profit margins have become larger, while their customer base has become smaller.
2) Show data around how many claims are denied by insurance companies. Just because you’re paying for health insurance doesn’t mean you have good coverage!
3) Give a 10-15 step outline of what’s IN the bill.
4) Assure the health insurance industry that although the public plan WILL exist, they can still charge inordinate amounts of money to people for care IF they so choose to stay with them.

I guess it’s easy to play a psychotic martyr on TV when you’re paid 10 million a year for your radio show alone.
“We’re doing ‘free speech on the ropes’ and I will show you how they are going to dismantle this, and shut you up, and shut me up, and shut all of us up. And unless people understand what’s being done, unless people understand what’s being built, and I’m not even sure what’s being built, I just know that something is being built, and the czars are part of it. And there is quite honestly, I believe there is evil at play.” Unless you know, unless you’re questioning, unless you come to these town hall meetings armed with something, you’re too easily dismissed, and I will tell you this, as the light grows lighter, so do the shadows. By arming you every day, by arming you, not with guns, but with facts, and you walking into these places armed with facts, the biggest stick you can carry. The opposition on me is growing stronger and stronger which means one thing, they don’t – you dismiss idiots, you just – let the idiot – he’ll burn himself out, you have to destroy people who are on to you. I’m on to ‘em, and it’s driving ‘em crazy, and they’re doing everything they can to put a stop to it. What they don’t understand is I’ve got you. You may not save my life, but you will be responsible in saving the republic.” – Glenn Beck

People who attack Beck personally but never listen or watch him have absolutely no credibility. Beck is doing the work the media SHOULD be doing. His popularity will continue to skyrocket and there’s nothing the left will be able to do about it.
The mainstream media spent a tremendous amount of time and money digging through Sarah Palin’s garbage, but they seemingly have no interest in vetting any of Obama’s three dozen czars–these people are virtual unknowns, some with radical pasts, who are making thousands of decisions in the executive branch that are affecting our lives. Why would the media be uninterested in them? Would they have ignored the Bush administration if they had three dozen unvetted czars? I think not.
Eventually, the mainstream media will be made to answer for their complicity in helping to put a corrupt administration in power.

It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.” stop obama before it is too late he’s trying to force his healthcare plan on us through you senators none of his tactics worked so please do not let him pass that bill. thank you senator! p.s. please keep him from trying to brainwash our children by making them help him by sending him letters to help him stop him from trying to “indoctrinate” the school system. thank you!
