What’s Behind the Anger?

Glenn Beck on the cover of TIME. A tattooed Obama on the cover of NEW YORK over the headline: HATE.

The President told me that much of the anger is fueled by those who think the government can't get anything right.

Here's how the roundtable saw it:

Brazile backed the President for denouncing extremism saying “there’s a culture of extremism that has caught mainstream acceptance and I think the President is absolutely right, when you see it you have to call it.”

Gillespie criticized those making “cheap comparisons to Adolf Hitler ” especially when discussing people’s legitimate concerns as it will “inflame an already impassioned debate.”

Noonan agreed: “There’s a lot of anger right now, Mrs. Pelosi had a point when things get high it’s always good to cool things down.”

“I don’t think it’s the dominant element,” Reich said, but later agreed: “this is what happens in our country when people are scared.”

For our full discussion, watch HERE.

- George Stephanopoulos

I suspect that Robert Reich would proudly carry around a bucket filled with feces and claim it to be Godiva chocolates for a Democrat president. He is totally incapable of giving a thoughtful personal opinion on public policy issues. The man is so predictable he is a bore.

The Mainstream “Elite” media is so dead wrong. Couldn’t you spend ANY time talking to regular people, you know, the 95% of protestors who are too normal and too boring to make your “news” cast? All you have to do is stop searching the crowds for the nutjobs and just pick a boring normal person.
It ain’t race you elitist snobs. It’s about our Republic and our Constitution. We are afraid of the extreme leftist agenda coming out of Congress and the WH.

George cannot afford to change the Round Table setup.
Any other people than those currently occupying the seats around that table might disagree with what Obama is putting forth.
And we all know that wouldn’t be prudent.
No, not very prudent at all.

thank you Mr. Stephanopoulos for asking some tough questions, being direct and straight forward about the issues,
I don’t really agree that it’s an issue of racism toward the President, but I believe that it has more to do with increasing not only the size of the federal Government, but greatly expanding the power of the federal government over the individual lives of the US citizens, and how all of the President’s policies does just that,
“Cap and Trade,” more taxes for the American people, (more control)
New financial regulatory reform,
(more control over the free market)
“Health care” individual mandates, which means more control over the individual lives of the American People…
What I’m trying to say here is that the American people are awaking to reality of more Federal government involvement in our everyday lives, on very personal levels, and that is what I believe is fueling much of the Anger,
The Bigger the government gets, the lesser the rights of individuals…

Here is a riddle:
I oppose fundamental transformation of the foundation of our county, its principles and its traditional institutions.
I feel anger because we don’t need ‘transformative change’ in America. We need to fix problems the American way and return to the principals on which our country was founeded.
My feelings represent the majority of people who oppose the extreme agenda and disastrous policy of this administration.
What color am I?

It comes down to government out of control, both on spending and on size. Obama inherited a mess and he is adding to it. Both parties are awful, and many of these folks are demonstrating against both sides because they have failed us. Why pay taxes to these fools when they are so corrupt. Me thinks Ron Paul is on to something.

It was pretty silly of you to quote the dictionary. And Peggy Noonan is terribly boring and condensending, just like a white Republican woman. All of the media sounds alike and no one is getting on the correct story. We are all upset because we have 20 million out of work and the economy is in the tank and the country is broke. So all we hear is non-stop noise about health care, guess what it is not what the vast majority of Americans are thinking about and dealing with. What we have is a large landslide victory for one individual over another and the Republicans have gone crazy. I have been a Republican for over 40 years of my adult life and now don’t know what to think. America is an idea and an agreement between us all to live by a code of the majority rules and the minority is loyal. It appears we are breaking that basic agreement and becoming something else, or is it just the cable TV and far right and left that we are hearing? Some of this is bordering on treason sounding stuff.
I see comments from all sorts on both sides criticize your guests. They are always far right and left and so are you guess and that is the problem.
We real Americans are interested in solving the real problems, jobs, economy and taxes and being a broke country. Countries are just like companies and both of them are just like people. We only have so much energy and capital that we can use and we must be focused if we are to be successful. The country is focused on the wrong things, i.e. Health Insurance is not an emergency, the other stuff is.
The real questions the media should be looking at is why are we not investing in ourselves in America and our people. Like High Tech Engineering and jobs for the future long haul. Instead we still have 50,000 troops in Japan after 60 plus years. What for? This is crazy. We do this all over the world and give away massive amounts of foreign aid. Guess what after all the past 65 years when we assumed world leadership we still have it wrong, non of this pays us a dividend of any kind. We should shut down all the wars and monies to other countries except for disasters and invest the money here on our people and America.
Solving the Health Insurance deal in America is like solving any big corporate problem. You don’t go change the entire process, you analyze and determine what is wrong and you implement incremental changes one or two at a time. Why, because you can only predict what small changes will produce a desired set of results.
Automation of Medical Records is a big key and will save everyone in the medical delivery chain a great deal of money. This should be the first incremental change and then when it is complete we look at what can next be done to save money and improve coverage for all citizens at 9 %.
Just my thoughts from an old corporate guy that has implemented a great deal of successful incremental change. They all saved a great deal of money and improved productivity and that is what it is about.

President Obama is right. We need health care reform now. Just about everyone has either experienced or knows someone who has experienced health problems and medical bills that they cannot afford. Those who are calling for starting all over in a bipartisan way are merely trying to maintain the status quo–which is not good for the average American. President Obama has been reaching out trying to get Republicans to work with him on health care reform in a bipartisan way. The Republicans are not acting in good faith for the good of all of us. They aren’t cooperating now and I don’t think they have any intention of cooperating later. I applaud President Obama for leading this much needed reform.

Does Obama think that we are brain dead. What kind of lame argument is “everyone has to buy car insurance, and no one calls that a tax increase?” Yeah, and I ONLY have to buy car insurance if I drive a car. His horrible health care plan will make it mandatory for everyone to buy health insurance, even if they do not go to a doctor or believe in traditional medicine, which I DO NOT!!!!
He thinks that we are too stupid to see that this desperate push of his to force mandatory health insurance down our throats is nothing more than his attempt to pay back the Jews for their support of him during the election of 2008, and to secure their support for 2012. He is NOTHING more than a typical politician. Everything that he has done so far in this first term is to get him reelect. He does NOT give a damn about the economy, the wars, etc. The ONLY thing he cares about is HIS OWN SELFISH AMBITION. Well, I hope and pray that should he and the Democrats force through this mandatory health insurance policy, the Republicans will challenge the constitutionality of it in court, and this is one African-American female voter who will be right along with them.

You ask us to look at the facts, then mention the posters. How about looking at the facts yourself. The posters you reference were far and few between. A few whackos in the midst of very normal people. Check the whackjobs in Left rallies too… Sadly, the news sources you choose show you only the negatives. Search the internet for photo sites of the 9/12 Project. There are thousands of them. There were black people in the crowd, not many but some. There were thousands and thousands of posters out there, expressing their concerns. Valid concerns. They are in the photos out there. Make an educated assessment of the people there, not just follow what the slanted media tells you.

Yes, you are right. WE were too busy living our lives, raising our children. We were seeing the govt. growing and getting more corrupt. We did nothing. We talked amongst our friends and family, but remained silent. Bush woke up a lot of people with the TARP plan. Don’t you remember how Congress had been bombarded by their constituents before voting on TARP? That was the catalyst. It lit our fuse. Obama has taken the reins and blown Bush’s and everybody else’s spending out of the water. Congress is corrupt, filled with special interest purchasing and selling power. We don’t want to be silent any longer, before the damage is too drastic to repair. Only Voters can save the Republic.

Today, September 20, 2009, 3 hours ago | Huh
It comes down to government out of control, both on spending and on size. Obama inherited a mess and he is adding to it.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have worked (>35 years) both in government and in private and public companies all my life. From what I know and experienced, it is not nearly as easy for any government institution to ‘defraud’ the citizens as it is for a company.
This is because of the protection of disclosure of information companies have (that the government does not) as well as whistle-blower legislation to expose fraud. Companies do not have to comply with the ‘Freedom of Information act’ as does the government.
In addition, government employees do not have any incentive to commit ‘fraud’ because of the absence of a ‘Profit Motive’ (no money in their pocket) and specific regulations covering punishment for fraud.
Conversely, employees of companies have ample incentive to ‘defraud’ consumers because it means money in their pocket (‘Profit Motive’) AND because it is very difficult to prove and punish (as we have seen).
So, to me, the question really boils down to: Where is it easier to detect and stop ‘fraud waste and abuse’?
I witnessed fraud in several companies in my early years (when they were far more regulated than they are now). I have never witnessed fraud in the federal government. I have worked for the government the vast majority of my life.
In my opinion, and based upon my understanding of the laws, the typical rates of convictions for fraud, the penalties assessed and my experiences, it is nearly impossible for the Federal Government to commit even billions of dollars in fraud.
However, we have all witnessed the trillions of dollars of fraud committed on Wall Street. Do we really trust Corporate CEOs (who have a ‘Profit Motive’) more than government ‘CEOs’ (who don’t have a ‘Profit Motive’)?

i would like to suggest that every media personality working in NYC take a field trip to the America that lies between Manhattan and Malibu. find a normal looking individual on their way to the office and spend about 15 minutes discussing every day issues with that person. you might be surprised at what real Americans think and want for this country. i’ll give you a hint – it’s not what we are getting.

It is NOT about race. It is about his policies and the way he goes about it.
It is about spending our money irresponsibly and saddling our grandchildren with enormous debt, his continual lies (the whole healthcare mess), the hypocrisy in saying one thing to us and doing another the appointments to law breakers, the relationships with shady entities (ACORN) its the arrogance, the criticism of the voters who have a right to challenge their government, the “czars” with communist backgrounds, the overexposure and the celeb mentality he has, its the putting his nose where it doesn’t belong (Gates, cars and banks) and the obvious power trip he is on, the whining when certain people and news stations don’t agree with him……..I could go on but it isn’t just one thing…..

Its not about race. Joe Biden couldve been advocating huge government and people would still be protesting. Its about media bias and people being sick of one sided reporting. You seriously have never witnessed government fraud? You must live under a rock. The federal prisons are full of politicians commiting fraud. And that is only the real stupid ones who get caught. Both parties have several candidates who should be occupying a cell currently. What the far left and far right do not understand is that we in the middle outnumber you both. This is how Bush and Obama got elected. We are fed up with the lies and using our money as your personal bank account. Once we in the middle put our foot down and run our own candidate, both the Lib. Democrats and Far Right Republicans can suck wind. Obama will be the straw that caused this country to say enough.

The anger was started with talk show host who make money shouting patriotism and wrap themselves in the flag, and the Republicans who lost the election followed by the insecurity of the population in economically hard times..The issues surfacing are as old as America itself a nation divided and the torn by the same historical hates for each other in time of uncertainty.
I personally lost interest and faith in Time to have a divisive person As Glen Beck on the cover elevating him to high places. If we are going to make it in the age of globalization we need to be united for our future genareations.

The redistributionist, big-government policies are behind the anger. Obama wrongly believes he won because of this platform. He knew what “Hope and Change” meant, but he cleverly avoided speaking the truth about it in his campaign and during the debate. He won by putting down the Bush administration.
So, his election was a vote against the Republicans. Most Obama supporters did not realize the meanings of the socialist/communist code-words “hope” and “change”. But now they are finding out and are getting angry.

Posted by: skipbowt | September 21, 2009, 12:06 am 12:06 am

ErnstNM-If you aren’t aware of fraud in gov’t then maybe you should go to a 2005 report that the Heritage Foundation published using government reporting documents the 2004 gov’g spending habits. They list the top 10 wasteful areas. #1 was an admission that there was $25 billion that the gov’t new had been spent but couldn’t figure out who spent it and what it was spent on. As for Medicare, there were billions that were paid for fraudulent claims. And at a rate that greatly exceeded the loss by private insurance companies due to fraud. The reason is the puny enforcement budget by the gov’t. That way they can say they keep admin cost much lower than private companies. Private companies do spend more on reducing fraud and, of course, with much better resultss. Industry standard show that for every dollar spent to reduce fraud the savings is $8.00. A truth lost on the managers of Medicare. Oh, also in the top 10 list was the misuse of gov’t credit cards that are issued to thousands of gov’t employees to make purchasing needed supplies easier. When the auditors did a spot check they found millions used for things like cruises, concert tickets, strip joints, liquor, massages, and all manner of items that had nothing to do with gov’t work. Another intem was hundreds of millions of dollars in airline tickets that had been bought by depts in gov’t and not used but were never turned in to get a reimbursement for the gov’t.
For Obama or any congressman or senator to say that we are going to save billions by correcting waste is Medicare and Medicad is simply not believeable. They have no capacity to do so!
Obama has told so many obvious lies the White House should be called the home of the Whopper. He and his team have committed so many gaffs he has lost credibility. Once he gets off the teleprompter he makes foolish statments. Such as saying the police officer acted stupidly right after he said he didn’t know the facts. Or that the press shouldn’t get “all wee wee’d up”. If “W” had said something that tasteless we would have heard about it on every mainstream outlet for weeks. Hardly a ripple except on talk radio and Fox when Obama offered that jewel.

Posted by: Wally in Little Rock | September 21, 2009, 1:19 am 1:19 am

I don’t see the racism. I’ve looked at thousands of signs carried at the 9/12 March on DC, and not a single one refers to race. Most are about government spending. Why is that so difficult to apprehend?
This administration has attempted Too Much Change Too Fast and it frightens people (the very people who have to actually pay for it, since the Govt has no money of its own). Very simply, even those who voted for “change” are getting more than they bargained for. These American dissidents are simply saying, “Whoa, Nellie, now wait a minute…”
In addition, Obama frightens and offends people — not because of his skin color, but because of the apparent content of his character. Millions of people fear his reach (i.e. the power grab described by Sen. Byrd back in February) and are offended by his apparent lack of heartfelt love of country. They don’t trust him,(and it doesn’t help that he grew up in foreign countries and a CA-NY leftist bubble). Obama is compared to Hitler, not for the sake of hyperbole, but because of his similar rise from nowhere, his charisma and egotism, the extent of his reach into the private sector and his desire to change the very character of the nation.
How many times has the word “unprecedented” been used in news accounts of this administration? Obama has created dozens of positions that never existed, a shadow government of “czars” that make his cabinet look like a bunch of potted plants. That worries people.
And finally, he has incessantly insulted and offended Middle America – from Joe the plumber to to Pennsylvania’s rural clingers to Boston cops. For 9 out 10 of these dissidents, their fears and anger have nothing to do with race, nothing to do with the fact that he LOOKS different from other American presidents. It has to do with the fact that he doesn’t ACT like other American presidents. He may speak like a centrist, but he ACTS like a radical. And the American people are not fooled. They know that the ‘stimulus’ wasn’t one, and that it will be used next year to buy the midterm elections. They see that Obama doesn’t represent all of America -certainly not them- but instead only the leftist fringe. Who else but a radical leftist would let terrorists out of Gitmo and investigate their American interrogators? Who else would favor the palestinians over our former ally Israel? Who else would bow to the Saudi king and side with a wannbe-Chavez over the constitutional democracy of Honduras?
You can choose to believe that these people are stupid racists merely following a television news/talk show host, but they’re not. Just watch them in 2010 and 2012; I guarantee you, they will vote their pocketbooks — just like their signs say they will.

So, where was this anger during the Bush years? Seems to me these same people who are so angry are the same ones who supported Bush’s march to a foolish war in Iraq and who excused his incoherence by blaming biased media. I suggest those who have so much anger re-direct to something more constructive than shouting down opposing views…And, those who want to continue to express such anger do not feign innocence when the same anger gets re-directed to you. It is human nature to spit back in a person’s face once they have spit in yours..

It certainly is about race!! A person was elected to the presidency soley for the reason that he had black skin. If that isn’t racist I don’t know what is. He surely wasn’t elected for his qualifications as a leader, statesman, foreign affairs specialist, or any of a number of assets you would think the president of the greatest country on earth would have. I moved from the south based on the racial hatred and treatment I received from the good ole southern black folk at every turn. You want to see racism at its best go into and black owned business and see how the clerks treat you in Columbia, SC. The most racist people in this country are the blacks. You mark my words, and I said the day after the election, “It is going to get worse, before it gets better.”

I am a person who will likely not benefit from Health Care Reform. I am Insured by a rare insurer that does not discriminate for preexisting conditions and does not cancel people when sick. I do however have to file appeals to get payment often, I am lucky it has not been life or death treatment. This appeal process can be a death sentence in, Cancer Treatment for example.
Insurance Companies have too much authority in claim denial.
I do favor a public health option, but would be happy if congress simply eliminated their government health care and enter the real world of Health Insurance. This would lead to meaningful reform.
Point is just because I don’t think these reforms will not benefit me does not mean I don’t support them.
Note to G Will: The Republicans are the ones who have been doing the fist pounding and the no one said everyone is a racists who opposes reform. Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh are racists, if you don’t see the proof you are blinder than I ever thought.

I think “whats behind the anger?” is FOX news, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and others who have set out on a campaign of hatred towards ‘everything Obama’.
FOX news has been going on about Obama since at least Spring of 2008. That swhen the ‘terrorist fist jab’ and ‘babys momma’ stories came about. Theres been a great deal more apparently.
just take note of the common arguments:
ACORN. healthcare. Cap and Trade.
people who consider themselves thoughtful and intelligent people are serious when they talk about Obama destroying our country in 8 months.
They cant see the truth becasue tehy are blinded the rage that fills them from loud mouthed talk show hosts who have nothing better to do.
Seriously…Americorp.gov… Its ‘obamas army’. Joining americorp is socialist! servise to ones country…
so what is it you supporters of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck… service to your country…socialist OR not?
both Beck and Limbaugh say it is.
the anger is fed by people with an agenda. They only care that obama is seen to be a failure. the problem is that their rhetoric has already been seen by those outside as lunacy.

I am thoroughly disgusted with blatant racisism that never ends! We’re so used to hearing it, we gloss over it and no one mentions it…. but, here…. read it again:
“….. And Peggy Noonan is terribly boring and condensending, just like a white Republican woman. She has nothing of value to contribute to the program, please replace her with someone who has sincere and intelligent information. Thank you,”

Is anyone else tired of this crap?

George S., David Gregory, Matt Laurer, Keith Oberman, Chris Matthews any of the so called mainstream reporters don’t know how to be true journalists. They have sold themselves out to the liberals and Obama a long time ago. I have never been a a fan of ABC, but I did watch the coverage Sunday on Obamas TV blitz. I thought George would really ask the hard questions, but he didn’t push hard enough. He let Obama run the interview, when that is his job.
What is shocking to me is how Obama can say, straight faced that this Acorn thing isn’t the buggest issue in the country. He acts like he doesn’t even know the organzation. False, he does and we all know it. When it comes to 8 Billion dollars of our money…it damn well better be a concern to him. Secondly, when he refuses to stop the investigation into past CIA probes, he better be ready for the same thing when he is out of office. And finally, how can he let the disrespect that his White House aids (like Alexrod, Gibb, Czars)for the American people. I think these people need to remember WQE THE PEOPLE elect them, and WE THE PEOPLE and change that in 2010.

The irrelivance of the mainstream media knows no limits. Just like their tone deafness when it comes to hearing the voices of the American people. No wonder these guys are so chummy with the politicans they cover… They BOTH do NOT have a freaking clue!!!

I opposed many of Bush’s ideas and was called an American.
I oppose many of Obama’s ideas and now I ‘am called a Racist.

Georges’ interview with President Obama was much better than most. However, no one that I have seen specifically has called him out on medicare advantage plans. He continues to claim that to move those currently covered to regular medicare gives them equal coverage. In fact medicare covers 80% and most advantage plans cover 100% (subject to small deductibles) The plans also provide coverages for dental and health clubs. Most of the 20% of retired persons now covered save several thousand dollars per year. To eliminate is not a tax??? And, why is it the insurance companies are making a profit with these plans, while the claim is that Medicare cannot?

George please take your beltway sunglasses.
the anger is not with Obama or Beck but rather the mistrust of media in general and the distorted biased reporting.

Did Pelosi use good judgement when she used nazi and other inflamming words??,,, Did Dowd use good professional jouirnalism when she added the ” boy” word in her opinion piece regarding the Wilson outbutst?
Not a peep from you Beltway wizzards and Left wign elitist,, press and journalist included.. And you have to ask why the hatred,,, just look at yourselves…..

Simple. Government has stopped functioning for the good of the people. It functions for the good of the wealthy and the powerful, and most people are fed up with that.

Also -
FOX news spent the entire Bush administration misinforming its viewers. A great many of them are still convinced that Iraq and september 11th are connected. they also believe that Bush only spied on ‘terrorists’. They also believe that Obama is a Muslim (which is where the racism comes in)…for some reason being Muslim is bad???
FOX is now gladly telling all of its viewers that Obama is spying on them. what they fail to mention is that Bush spied much much more. It doesnt make it right that Obama is doing it but FOX never told its viwers the truth about Bush and so now they get angry (just as democrats were under Bush).
The problem is that Bush was much worse than Obama. Im still open minded and hopeful about Obama. Bush policies of corporations and wealthy first led to the financial collapse. Obamas policies have brought our country back.
The Republicans always side with big business. Consider the recent house proposal to increase education subsidies (grants) by cutting subsidies to bankers. Nearly all the Republicans in the House voted against increasing student aid by cutting subsidies to bankers. Who’s side are they on??
They are on the side of corporations and the wealthy but apparently most of their supporters dont know it. thats why they are angry now. They are being told lies by everyone they listen to.
All you have to do is look at the actions of theose people. Who is it that wants to privatize Medicare like they did with Medicare Part D? Its not the democrats. Its the Republicans who want to do the same to all of Medicare what they did to Medciare Part D. They want to privatize everything. They dont care if you cant get or afford health care. Just so long as insurance companies keep making profits.
Unfortunatley we also have to contend with ‘blue dog democrats’ who are basically republicans.
Only the Progressives have the people best inetrets in mind.

This Presidency is steeped in hypocricy:
President Obama promised transparency and all we get is secrecy.
He promised to fight and win in Afganistan and now we get hesitation and doubt.
He celebrates dictators but cann’t do tough interviews.
He creates more enemies in the American people daily by refusing to hear because he has an agenda that is pseudo intellectual.
Race has nothing to do with it. Check out who is screaming race. It is a bunch of babies who are not getting their way.

To huh blogger:
Perhaps you don’t have the facts. There is no health care bill and as for the health care bill Obama my president has been trying to sell, maybe he should read it and you should. It gives a government beaurocrat too much power and that will of course be some incompetent that knows nothing about health care or health insurance. Some elected Czar who only answers to his highness.
By the way all the things he pitches you in the health care bill are not in it!
That is why they have to go back and keep remaking it.
A dead fish is a dead fish.

I hope in my lifetime I never see another person so hateful as Glen Beck. I am so happy you left CNN because your kind of rhetoric did not fit that station which is truly fair and balanced. Who made you the authority on anything….where are your degrees? From what I have heard…you made it through high school and have maybe one year or so of college? Does that qualify you to be the representative of the world problems? I think not. The only thing you are an expert at is flapping your gums. I don’t care if your book is successful…how can it not be with it being given out at the tea parties for people to read. You have not been fair or honest in most of your assessments and your kind of Americanism is not for me. I love this country and my father fought in two wars for this country and for some loudmouth like you to come along and disgrace it and its president..makes me angry.

Where was this anger when Bush and Chaney where passing stuff like wire traps, email intercept, and the ability to detain Americans without cause.
^^^
Actually, Obama decided to continue all these practices. He didn’t stop torture, in fact he expanded and outsourced it so Americans have no oversight whatsoever, who knows today the horrors being done today in your name. He took it a step further by deciding he could regulate pay for any American he sees fit. Along with nationalizing financial institutions, banks, car companies and now setting his eyes on nationalizing the newspapers… do we really need a state run newspaper? Pravda anyone?

i used to have a lot of respect for georges bottom line till omama came on the show. i thought it was georges program, but every time george asked a question, obama wouldn’t give an answer. instead he was trying to promote his healthcare program. george let hin get away with it. if someone wants to go on the show, then they need to answer questions. if not, don’t waste the time on them. obama does lie,and has the whole time he’s been in office. you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that.
