Arnold’s ‘F*** You’ Veto — Coincidence?

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: My colleague Teddy Davis has the tale of the apparent F-bomb Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s dropped on a state lawmaker, in an otherwise forgettable veto message on a totally forgettable subject.  Schwarzenegger’s camp is claiming this is all a “weird coincidence.” It’s definitely weird — particularly because there’s a potential motive for the not-so-coded message. Coincidence? ABC’s polling director, Gary Langer, did some math to calculate the odds of these seven letters appearing in this particular order: 1/26^7, or .0000000001245. That’s less than one in 10 billion. I had more on the “World News Webcast” today. (Though, with all due respect to Charlie Gibson, I’m not sure how “intrepid” this particular piece of reporting was.)

Gary’s math isn’t quite right, as it doesn’t consider the frequency of letters that start words in the English language. The actual odds are still very high, but not in the billions.
