Coulter-Rubin Verbal Spat on GMA

The ongoing verbal sparring between the White House and Dick Cheney extended to our set on Good Morning America today with two surrogates –neither of whom shies away from a battle: conservative pundit Ann Coulter and former State Department spokesman Jamie Rubin.

The request for more troops in Afghanistan is the issue of the moment – and particularly Cheney’s comments this week that the President is ‘dithering’ on making a decision, but there were these choice, more generalized barbs:

Rubin: The vice president is like one of those bullies who has graduated from school and can’t help but get back into the school yard and yelling taunts at those in the game.

Coulter: Obama’s going around creating disasters across the world, lighting matches and throwing in gasoline.

Will  the decision on Afghanistan troop levels end this war of words? I doubt it.

CHEAP! CHEAP! CHEAP! Just lazy and an uncreative stunt to make use of an Ann Coulter regarding such a serious issue, which requires serious discussion. NOW! you guys (ABCNews) are trying to promote it! ABCNews, what is the priority here? Is it news? Or, is it ratings?

Jamie Rubin should not let someone like Coulter get him upset. Educated, intelligent people understand her “game” and how big of an idiot she is. It is people like her that have slowly but surely destroyed the Republican Party with their close minded, virulent, conservatve garbage. On the other …maybe he is just keeping her stirred up so her mouth just keeps running and the “collateral damage” just gets worse. I hope that is the case, because she is simply not worth the powder to blow her…you know where.

@FS – “Educated, intelligent people understand her “game” and how big of an idiot she is.”
I’m sorry, but you seem to imply that Ann Coulter is uneducated, unintelligent and an idiot – She graduated cum laude from Cornell in 1984 with a B.A. in history, and received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she achieved membership in the Order of the Coif and was an editor of the Michigan Law Review.
You’re the one who is running their mouth without checking your facts. I would be surprised if you had such academic laurels as Ms Coulter.

Shame on you, Good Morning America. I hope this nation pays attention to the toxic spewing of the Republican “spokespersons”(?!) and I hope you return to some journalistic integrity in not airing this reminder in why we have a record high national debt as well as a crumbled economy, not to mention an abysmal reputation worldwide for our fear-based military involvement where we don’t belong.

Jim Rod …I am going to attempt a simple analogy lesson here that hopefully even people like you can understan. What make a good “game day coach” in college football? The kind that develops a plan a week before the big game and then refuses to veer off that plan no matter what the opposition does (i.e. Gerge Bush). Or one that that flexible, adaptable and that can constantly make adjustments to what the opposition throws at them? We have the latter in our current President – and not only should we be very glad about that – we should be supporting him and tuning out idiots like Coulter, Cheney, Beck, Rush etc. Now that is ONLY if you can understand that concept and how fortunate we are to now have an intelligent, thinking, adaptable leader for our country.

ann coulter (flip blonde hair) may be an intelligent (hair toss) and well educated woman, (tuck hair behind ear) but she is also an entertainer; one who thrives (shake out hair) on adopting divisive attitudes, (run hands through hair) fomenting controversy, and telling out and out lies. (tuck hair behind ear again, and laugh dismissively at opponent’s comments.) it’s kind of hard to afford her any level of respect when she so clearly does not respect anyone who questions the The Word According to ann.

Posted by: justsane | October 23, 2009, 1:20 pm 1:20 pm

JDS: You show your intelligence when attribute a comment to someone who did not make it. Without question Ann Coulter is academically credible but she, in my view, is one who has “gone hollywood” and rarely speaks to the subject at hand. She knows her schtick… and that is to be controversial and “twist” factual information in order to represent an opposition instead of well-thought out analysis. This is what gets her air time and this is what gets her paid.
Where are the intellectual, conservative women who could bring to the table thought-provoking discussion rather than Rush Limbaugh laden blow-hard spewings? I KNOW they exist! I have met them!!!

I forgot the terrorist sent them letters saying how the attacks would occur at what time and what date and sent copies of the boarding passes so the FBI could be waiting for them? Funny how they did all the planning and training for the attack under the Clinton Administration. But I do not blame him! I am not that stupid .(unlike you) to think any American President would let a terrorist attack on the United States happen if they had specific enough details to stop it.

Cheney was sworn in as Vice President on roughly Jan 21 2001. The terrorists attacked on Sep 11 2001 which was 233 days later.
Obama was sworn in on roughly Jan 21 2001. And, the terrorists have not attack us 276 days later.
So, Obama has protected us 43 more days so far than Cheney did.
Why are you not as confident in Obama?
Also, it is appropriate that you compared Cheney to Obama, since it is well known that he was the ‘Defacto President’.

Why is it that the Republicans completely ignore the fact that Cheney and Bush knew that Osama Bin Laden was planning a major attack on the USA?…just as Obama knows the same now!
And, that Al-Qaeda was able to carry out that attack on the USA while Cheney and Bush were in office.
The statistics are worth repeating again.
Cheney and Bush were sworn in on roughly Jan 21 2001. The terrorists attacked on Sep 11 2001 which was 233 days later.
Obama and Biden were were sworn in on roughly Jan 21 2001. And the terrorists have not attack us 276 days later.
So, Obama and Biden have protected us 43 more days so far than Cheney did in the respective administrations.
At the very least Obama and Biden should get a free pass (to be on par with Cheney and Bush) if the terrorists attack us again, because that is what happened during the Cheney and Bush administrations!

Looks like the President must be doing something right the past 3 days. The entire set of Rasmussen data is listed below.
Looks like major movement from ‘Strongly Disapprove’ to ‘Strongly Approve’ the past 3 days.
1) Strongly Disapprove down 2%
2) Strongly Approve up 2%
3) Somewhat Disapprove down 1%
4) Somewhat Approve unchanged
5) Total Approve up 2%
6) Total Disapprove down 3%
7) 49% Approve and 50% Disapprove – not bad at all considering what the President is doing.
Date—Somewhat Approve / Somewhat Disapprove—Strongly Approve / Strongly Disapprove—Total Approve / Total Disapprove

Your own argument makes my point.
Al-Qaeda planned attacks (then and now) under Republican and Democratic administrations as everyone (including you) knows. And Clinton gave the report on these desires to Cheney and Bush as they came in.
And, neither administration knew/knows “when where how the attacks would be carried out”.
So, why do Cheney and Bush get a ‘pass’ for not protecting us as long as Obama and Biden have?

Actually, Rasmussen does this to bias the polls in favor of the Republicans.
How do we know that? Because recent polling has shown that only 20 percent of adults identify themselves as Republicans (the lowest single number in Post-ABC polls since 1983). But, 33 percent call themselves Democrats.
So, this 13% ‘spread’ (versus the Rasmussen 4.5% ‘spread’) actually biases their results by 8.5% in favor of ‘Disapproval’.
Obama is actually on the plus side.
This is one of the reasons (there are many more) why Rasmussen’s reports are so different than all of the others and why they are GOP-Biased.

ErnestNM | Oct 23, 2009 3:30:42 PM: Funny you don’t point out that a Former Clinton Aid said the Briefings the Bush Administration gave the Obama Administration were so much better than the briefings the Clinton Administration gave to the Bush administrations. I believe his term was unprecedented. And I don’t give Obama credit for keeping us safer when he has not, it is because of the aggressive approach of the Bush Administration that you are safe today. By the way on 44% believe we are safer today than before 9/11 by your logic since Obama is so much better that # should be at 100%. And as for CND FOX | Oct 23, 2009 3:33:13 PM do you need me to slow down and put up flash cards that said the polls have a slightly higher number of Democratic Voters? Where is the Bias in that?

To see how ‘Republican-Biased’ the Rasmussen Polls and Report are it is instructive to use and example from the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration.
The Rasmussen Poll has 4 answers as follows;
1) Strongly Approve,
2) Somewhat Approve,
3) Somewhat Disapprove,
4) Strongly Disapprove.
‘Total Approve’ and Total Disapprove’ are calculated from these. The Index = Approve-Disapprove. Therefore 3 indexes can be calculated…but only one is currently used.
‘Total’ was emphasized when they polled for Bush, whereas ‘Strongly’ appears to be used exclusively now for Barack.
The following, using figures for Bush from May 2008 and the recent Rasmussen data, illustrates the ‘Rasmussen GOP Bias’ then and now using the 4 answers.
Bush
View——Somewhat / Strongly / Total
Approve——-19% / 13% / 32%
Disapprove—18% / 47% / 65%
Index————1% / -34% / -33%
Obama
View——Somewhat / Strongly / Total
Approve——20% / 27% / 47%
Disapprove—13% / 40% / 53%
Index———–7% / -13% / -6%
As you can see Bush’s ‘Index’ was ‘better’ (even though still very bad) by emphasizing ‘Total’ then.
And, Barack’s ‘Index’ is ‘significantly worse’ by using ‘Strongly’ now.
Also notice that ‘Somewhat’ is diametrically opposed to the ‘Strongly’.
This is why Rasmussen wants to use the ‘Strongly Index’ vs the ‘Total Index’. In this example it showed Barack with a -13% ‘Index’ instead of a -6% about 3 days ago.
His ‘Total Disapproval Index’ is -1 now.

I won’t be watching. I find Ann Coulter’s method of getting press attention as repulsive. She went to the school of Rush and I don’t listen to him either..

Posted by: ErnestNM | Oct 23, 2009 3:52:08 PM: Funny you don’t say anything about that before I made your argument look pointless no wonder Obama will have a 1.4 trillion deficit this year. Liberals think Profit is a bad thing and negative poll numbers are a good thing. And tell the good people at home this. The Rasmussen polls have a great track record lets look at two of the larger ones. In 2008, Obama won 53%-46% and our final poll showed Obama winning 52% to 46%. And then there is this In 2004 George W. Bush received 50.7% of the vote while John Kerry earned 48.3%. Rasmussen Reports was the only firm to project both candidates’ totals within half a percentage point by projecting that Bush would win 50.2% to 48.5%. How watered down and biased does that look? I would say that is very accurate.

Can you tell me how a -34 index is better than a -9 ? last I checked unless Math has changed -34 is less than -9? No amount of fact is going to wake you from your fantasy world.

Yes it is.
But let’s look at the 2008 polls a little more closely so we can see where Rasmussen really stood compared to the others.
Poll——–Obama / McCain / Spread
Final Results—-52.9% / 45.6% / 7.3%
1) CNN/Opinion Research—-53 %/ 46% / 7%
2) Ipsos/McClatchy—-53% / 46% / 7%
3) FOX News—-50% / 43% / 7%
4) Pew Research—-52% / 46% / 6%
5) Rasmussen Reports—-52% / 46% / 6%
It looks like Rasmussen came in 5th place.
Interestingly, they were behind FOX news.
And, CNN and Ipsos nailed the ‘final results’ and ‘spread’.
So, why are you so fascinated by the Rasmussen poll?

Nice cue cards Rubin
Classic bait and switch Dems; they ignore a report when they came into office so they can “start from scratch” and now try to shift the conversation to hate Bush. All the while, they are going to follow the same report they ignored.
You own it now Obama, deal with it. Don’t hang the troops on the ground out to dry while you do fundraisers for Governors up for re-election. The call for reinforcements came in, people are dying in Afghan NOW, get out of the past.
Crybaby BS. Your blame Bush routine is old, tired, and looks like the only stick in the bag.

Glad you asked.
-34% was Bushes ‘Strongly Disapprove Index’ whereas -33% was his ‘Total Disapprove Index’.
Therefore Bush looked ‘less disapproved’ when Rasmussen used ‘Total’ instead of ’Strongly’ with him.
Barack on the other hand looks ‘significantly disapproved’ because of the -9 ‘Strongly Disapprove Index’ instead of the -1 ‘Total Disapprove’ index’ using today’s Rasmussen numbers.
Similarly, he looked ‘significantly disapproved’ because of the -13 ‘Strongly Disapprove Index’ instead of the -6 ‘Total Disapprove Index’ using the Rasmussen numbers from 3 days ago.
Does that help?

Typical of Liberals when you are proven wrong you resort to hate and name callling suprised you have not used the Race or Sexism card yet. Face it your Guy is falling and after healthcare and Cap and Tax it will be all over for Democrats.

DIGNITY? Look at how the dem’s are always throwing stones at the previous administration…Dignity? I don’t think so. They are always trying to shut the conservatives up and calling names…Dignity? I agree that this administration is making some bad decisions as well and as history will show, made a bigger mess. PUT MORE TROOPS IN! SPEND MONEY WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE SPENT AND STOP CREATING MORE BILLS THAT ARE NOT NECESSARY RIGHT NOW FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN TO PAY. #1 priority should be to keep our people safe and our nation safe as well. Bush’s administration did that. How long will it be befor we are attacked again because of procrastination. Regan showed strength and brought the hostages home.

Ah, I did listen to NPR this morning, and the president’s ratings are far from in the tank; he has the highest approval rating of any politician. However, Michele Obama has even higher percent approval of any political (first lady) person.
What bothers me, is the assumption from those that only follow Fox News and right-wing talk radio, is that anything that isn’t far to the right must be left leaning.
What I like about NPR is they at least try to present all sides of an issue. Most of the time it is just plain, in-depth, factual reporting.
Also, Ann Couture might be educated, but she is so profoundly biased and mean-spirited as to lose any credibility.

Ann Coulter, Liz Cheney, Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin. The new spokespeople for the repubs.
The liberweenie obviously feels threatened by conservative women. I’ll bet his favorite spokesperson is someone like Bwaney Fwank or that new fagarony Obummer hired as education czar.

“Oabam was given a plan before Bush left…”
Yes, he was given a play by the gang-that-couldn’t-shoot-straight. Is it any wonder that he threw it into the circular file (the trash can)? He wanted a real comprehensive plan – not a banner or a bumper sticker.
I want a President who doesn’t take his cues from Bush & Co. I want a President who actually takes the time to consider the situation, instead of throwing US troops at his pet projects, like you-know-who.
NATO countries are actually considering backing Obama’s play on this one, once he has time to come up with a comprehensive plan that isn’t just a military patch – because Afghanistan is not a military problem – it’s a political one.
Until the US develops a plan that includes a political solution to the problem of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, no matter how many troops you have, you are doomed to fail.

“The liberweenie obviously feels threatened by conservative women. I’ll bet his favorite spokesperson is someone like Bwaney Fwank or that new fagarony Obummer hired as education czar.”
Oh, no. I like Sarah just fine. Particularly her stand in the NY rep race where she just divided the Rep. party into the serious and the dead.
But while we’re on the subject why are you such a homophobe? After all, Mr. Barney Frank has a much longer record of public service than any “conservative woman”.
After all, “conservative women” aren’t allowed to actualy serve in office by the Rep. party. They are seen and heard, but not elected to anything.

Funny..If its “Dithering” that bothers Cheney so much..then WHY did the BUSH White House do do very little for 5 years of the Iraq war…only to recant at the last moment with the supposed “Surge” of which his generals couldnt do without?? I think as far as throwing stones at this White House..lets listen to those that dont have a stake in the outcome of this current conflict. The Bush White House and all it contained should be ignored on just about every new issue facing us today. Its their fault were in this to begin with..isnt it. And Im talking ALL of this..all of it.
Ann Coulter…. is a moron..and shouldnt be allowed to talk..period. She hasnt done anything BUT run her nazi mouth. Nothing for anyone. She doesnt volunteer..doesnt hold an office…never has. She isnt even a member of the PTA or the Girl Scouts. WHY do you listen to her?? Why is she on TV?? It used to be that folks that actually did something were the ones we were watching..now its any jerk with a mouth and an opinion..
what a world huh??

Ann Coulter is just a female Rush Limbaugh. She is another pompous idiot that makes her money by bad-mouthing others. It is their ilk that have done such damage to the party they claim to support.
As long as Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, and their kind speak for the republican party, Obama and the democrats will continue to thrive.

It’s amusing. It’s plain and simple.
Who won the Nobel Peace Price? You can’t send thousands of our guys to Afghanistan if you’ve just won the Nobel Price; especially if you haven’t received the award in your hand and the price money yet. Obama still has to read his speech (that someone else will write for him) from the teleprompter and wag his pointer finger and raise his chin up like he always does. Then he’ll say “Make no mistake, bah bah bah!”
What else is new?

“Cheney kept us safe. I’m not as confident that Obama can do the same.”
Hmmm Jeff, it seems to me that the US WAS ATTACKED while Cheney and Bush were IN OFFICE! Explain to me how that was kept us safe?

Rubin wasted air time to keep Coulter from speaking, and the host allowed him to do so.
Rubin patted her on the head.
I don’t need people to tell me who they think has brains. Who do you think you are?
Neither of them is lacking intelligence It’s the mindlessness of adolescent minded ABC producers and editors that pits anyone against Coulter who is a very intelligent woman trained to argue and win.
Suddenly survival of the fittest doesn’t work so well for the left.
lol

FS says: “You will never know as long as “news” outlets provide entertainers (Ann Coulter)with platforms to discuss serious issues of which they have no clue. What in the world does Ann Coulter know about military strategy?”
I am certain that Ann Coulter knows more about military strategy than the entire Obama administration in aggregate.
Now if you were talking about strategy of organizing a group of left-wingnuts, union sympathizers or generationally addicted wealthfare recipients, the Obama administration is definitely more experienced.

Ann Coulter is an author and an attorney, just like the President. She hasn’t been elected the junior Senator from Illinois but maybe she prefers earning a living. The interesting thing about the complaints about Cheney is that people seem to resent him for wanting the President to do deploy troops that were requested by his commander.

Jim Rod: I think you meant to say “haunt”. On second thought, maybe you did mean “hunt”. You people have been on the “hunt” for something………. anything to discredit President Obama, but you just can’t seem to find that something can you?? That’s apparent in his approval ratings. It’s just one more valiant attempt before you neocons go the way of the dinosaur.
Carol:His job approval ratings are in the tank buddy. It was discussed this morning on NPR which swings to the left.
Not surprising as people are conditioned to expect immediate gratification from unrealistic expectations – “change” in his mere 9 months as president – and remember, 85% approved of Bush bombing Iraq – also, his approval ratings are among his supporters, many feel he’s not doing enough fast enough to reform health care. Apparently we learned nothing, as people now expect him to just send more of our kids to die. I admire that he takes the time to make the right decision. And the majority have no idea that economic indicators show recovery-unemployment is last as businesses wait to see 3-4 quarters of growth before they start hiring again. Most people are just completely clueless-these polls are not based on knowledge or intelligence, but rather propaganda and idiocy.

Why does anyone listen to her, and it doesn’t matter where you got your degree from. I’m sure people cheated their way to one or more degrees, it sure seems like they did. Is everyone all of a sudden born stupid? Nobody is making sense on T.V., I guess people can get 15 minutes of fame by being reckless and controversial, so here’s my question, is any pundit, analyst or news anchor going to make a difference in our lives and in our world? No!
