GOP’s Undeclared War Against Obama
We may be more focused on the partisan wrangling over health care and troop commitments in Afghanistan, but as Slate's David Kendall points out, the parties are at a stalemate in a less visible way as well.
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's nomination sailed through the Senate without much of a political fight. But according to Kendall's count, only three of Obama's 22 lower court nominees have been confirmed so far. Two more were approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in early June and still have not received a floor vote.
Legislative delay-tactics over federal judgeships are nothing new. Both sides of the aisle have engaged in such wrangling for years. But Kendall argues the Republican party is taking these delays to a new level.
What do you think?

I remember Ms Pelosi publicly stating that they would not cooperate with George W Bush in his final 2 years so that they could wait until the Dems were in power. It seemed to set the tone.

Of course it’s a GOP undeclared war. They lost big over the years and can’t come to terms with the fact that the American people largely don’t agree with their party line.

“What do you think?”
What do you think?!?! How about reporting REALITY. Geeze, this is not difficult fact checking folks. The reality, supported by facts in the article, is that Republicans are not content to just set a third consecutive record for filibustering. They are now shutting down the judiciary in an unprecedented fashion, and it is a direct tactic of causing harm to America’s institutions with the intent of blaming Democrats.
Why doesn’t ABC bother reporting the news? It’s OK to do your own reporting even if Slate is the one that broke this; some good folks have come out of Slate into ‘real’ news.

Tina, that’s neither smart, nor helpful and while Pelosi’s comment about no cooperation with W. in his final 2 years is entirely accurate…many could argue it was also not entirely unwarranted, if you get my meaning….meanwhile with this administration, young as it is still, it kind of seems like the GOP has become the Grand Obstructionist Party simply because they can…or because they can think of nothing else to do it. Like a toddler in a tantrum…what do you do when you’re not getting your way? Dig in your heels & become dead weight that parents then have to haul out of the store….

I don’t see Prez Obama “portraying” himself as a victim….never! It doesn’t and Won’t happen….now to the story……These inept idiots continues to believe they are in the Civil War era. Of course… they declared War on this President before he even sat in the Oval office. When he attempted to build a working relationship with these idiots….they sat back with a “smirk” on their face…the “little boys” need to take their “toys” and go home. Their “strategies” have not, Will not work….the American people are not blinded by lies, fear, hate or anger. That is the Majority, I’m speaking about. After Obama gets through some of main agendas of the American people…more is to be revealed. I can’t wait. Slowly, strategic, focused and strong, Mr. President.

I would like to know from you and from ABC where is the outrage when the President of the United States banishes a news organization “Fox News” from the White House? He refers to them as not a news program. Excuse me? And MSNBC is a un-bias news program? No matter what your opinion is in politics, the reason we live and love our country is because it’s not part of a controlled dictatarship run by someone like Chavez. Or am I wrong?

Fox has not been banished from the White House, they still have their press credentials and Major Garrett is still in the press briefings (unless a different reporter is covering for him).

Posted by: jhw539 | October 27, 2009, 12:24 pm 12:24 pm
First of all the President of the United States did not “banish” Faux News from the White House….Major still works as it’s White House correspondance. And if he did, that’s no more than Bush did to MSNBC, or Dan Rather…remember??? Now Faux News is just that a ‘fake’ arse station masqurading as a ‘news” station…MSNBC has Matthews, Maddow, Olberman, Ed but has never “presented” themselves as “NEWS”….what “news” person will ever call “the President of the United States” a Racist, Nazi, Hitler, Terrorist, Muslim (derogatory) and used “screaming” as an attention getter for the elderly who are hard of hearing, and “shout” fear, fear, fear to them…Now, if you know of a legitimately U.S. news media and organization that has EVER did this or said these types of things about the “President of the United States”, you need to be naming them so maybe you and the likes will be validated. I noticed you used Faux News lingo…”dictatorship” and Chavez in the same sentence….this is the SH! that you people do and then try and hide your hands…..They got it right!!!!! They’re NOT a NEWS Organization. They are a Republican arm broadcasting opinions and fear tactics over our airwaves…they are disgusting as Springer, Jerry that is, to take advantage of Ignorance and uneducated people for their gains.

? Undeclared war?
To the extent that Limbaugh is their spokesman, I’d say that the GOP War On Obama has been very well declared and advertised.
And even without that, their completely partisan approach to everything from a stimulus bill designed to stave off another Depression, to a health care option chosen by voters last November, and getting 65% support in the polls today, make it clear that their primary considerations about these issues have nothing to do with economics or health.
Instead, the Republican positions on these issues have everything to do with political pandering and posturing in their campaign to defy the will of the voters who elected this President last fall.

I usually don’t read the comments on stories like this because what I find is a whole lot of name-calling and very little discussion of the pros and cons on any particular issue. I don’t know why I would expect anything else. After all, name-calling seems to be what our elected representatives on both sides of the political aisle engage in most of the time. And that explains why our country is so polarized.
Why is it necessary to vilify anyone with an opposing viewpoint? Perhaps it’s because that’s what gets people fired up and willing to work or contribute money to something. But it certainly doesn’t bring us together as a people.
President Lincoln brought this into clear focus in his “House Divided” speech. Why not try reading it before posting any more hate and vitriole in this forum?
P.S.: If you think I’m just talking to the “other people”…….THINK AGAIN!

Now a comment on the article. The GOP is slowly but surely making themselves into a shrill, out of date, out of touch, obsolete minority. My hope is that all of us moderates who left them because of the above reasons never allow them to make a “come back”. They do not deserve to. My prediction is that they will just become more so(of the above) as they become more extreme.

THIS IS THE GOP PLAY BOOK. TAKE NOTE.

Those who don’t support the public option of healthcare reform are protecting the cut they are getting from the Insurance companies and the drug companies. Every year according to a study done by Harvard..44,500 people die in this country simply because they do not have health insurance..Thes politicians don’t care..fox don’t care..its about ratings and kick backs..Its real sad..If the Scandinavian countries, Canada and England can provide comprehensive health care for all their citizens..Why can’t we?

Meanwhile, in DOCUMENTED REALITY, the Democrats let Bush’s signature Bush Tax Cuts through. They also allowed the No Child Left Behind Act, despite the howls of the teachers unions. Bush has the highest approval ratings of any President ever seen after 9/11, and Democrats have come to regret the faith they put in him when they approved everything he asked for to deal with Iraq. In regards to this specific issue, the reference article documents the fact that even at the lowest point of his popularity, in 2007-2008, Democrats approved far more of his appointments in far less time than Republicans have done for Obama.
Again, what is it with Republicans constantly lying? Don’t they understand what their lies and exageration are doing to their credibility?

GOP is spending too much time catering to the extreme right and doesn’t realize how much media outlets like Fox News and Rush Limbaugh undermine their own credibility while whipping up a storm in the middle of under-educated America.
The GOP would win lots of Democratic converts in addition to stabilizing its own base if they got back to the true roots of the party: fiscal conservatism. There are plenty of good ideas from the likes of Ron Paul, but they are being heavily overshadowed by ludicrous arguments from others. Talking loud is not the same as leadership. Neither is disagreeing with something purely because the Democrats suggest it.
Republicans might also do well to publicly admit that the George W Bush presidency had more than its fair share of mistakes, and move on. The window for that is probably closed, but it doesn’t make it less due. While Obama has made more promises than he can likely fulfill, a lot of the reasons he couldn’t are because he’s also shouldering immense problems inherited from the last GOP president.
I think Democrats need to get with it too. We aren’t in some new golden age. We have a lot of problems to fix, but that doesn’t mean you should. Some things that are being fixed (ie. banks and the auto industry) were better left to fail for the sake of our future.

The Democrats control everything in Washington, but they are so inept they still can’t get anything done. So what to do? They tell everybody that the Republicans are obstructionists! To sad, To bad, To Late. GOP goes down in Karmic flames. How foolish to be so infantile and petty. What the hell happened to unity of the people for the betterment of the collective whole. Those who think they are superior and above the ordinary citizen are beyond foolish. The people have spoken and they mean business. GOP distortion machine can try to lie, fabricate and falsify all they wish because the people will decide. The people have witnessed and the people will judge accordingly. GOP leaders have led the members in the senate and congress down a slippery road that they will not be able to climb up ever again. Dont they get everyone in the world,is now saying the GOP is the biggest embarrasment to humanity, the U.S. and they insist on showcasing their true ignorant colors. How dare they hold the country and the advancement of good positive long over do change hostage. It is over GOP rover, cant fetch a nasty spirited ol dog a bone no more. Food thought. AMA wanted Pot kept legal, in the 30s because the medicinal properties where very apparent but GOP senators back in the day decided their personal puritan conservative agenda was more important and the burgeoning pharma giants would have lost mega billions had Pot remained legal. How sad that they are devoid of true logic. Do the math, the citizens are speaking loud n clear. Pot will put over 1 billion in taxes per state in the federal coffers every year.Moron GOPers that is 50 Billion a year to our much needed and depleted coffers. Additionally, Google Morris Fishbaum and then Google Royal Richard Rife and learn the hoax that has been played out on the citizens of humanity. Much dark action occureed in the early 30s that set the stage for the greatest crime against humanity. Wake up earthlings and read, Google does not hide, expunge or conceal the truth. Read the shocking and absolute despicable truth about Morris Fishbaum and how he bought up secretively and quitely 100% of the AMA and then expunged and erased from history and the medical journals most likely one of the greatest discoveries, inventions and gifts to all humanity. How sad, how very sad that the greed of a few absolute low souls decided their profits were more important than Royal Richard Rife getting divine inspiration from the creator and coming up with a pain free device that virtually cured every disease know to mankind. You will also find the GOP had there “Party of No” hands deep in the tyranical conspiracy against mankind. Merchants of disease, death and pain be damned your days are numbered and your myth will be exposed. Angels in the outfield are lining up by the legions and the truth will be revealed. Guarentee when the american people finally get wind of the actions that were orchestrated by Morris Fishbaum and company, the people will rightly demand reversal of decades of dispicable actions. Pray to the high creator, for it is time for pure unadulterated truth to take the stage.

Matt, I agree 100% withwhat you said. The GOP created a monster by appealing to a very narrow type of mind set (either due to lack of education, extreme religious beliefs or those that just do not like change because they are narcissistic and believe it will adversely affect them). Now they cannot control that monster, have no good leadership and no strategy other than to be negative and obstructionists. They are digging an extremely deep hole for themselves and will suffer the consequences. But that is OK since they have no positive vision or solutions to offer our country.

GOP has a reason to be very scared. Mid 2010 elections will throw them one heck of a surprise. Fools when the honorable president of the United States offers to work with you, behind closed doors you rant n you rave, but then you bring out to the american people assuming we are idiots and dont have clue. If you think you gained one iota of increased support for all your whacked out town hall scream sessions you are so sadly mistaken. Not only will go down in flaming defeat in the mid 2010 elections you have insured that a president will be ushered in a 2nd term with the largest landslide victory ever and history will show the collective body of work under the honorable commander in chief of this great nation will portrayed by historians as the single most polarizing figure along side washington, lincoln, truman and kennedy. Go President Obama Go !!!! The world leaders recognize that U.S. has a thoughtful, kind hearted, compassionate and highly intelligent leader that has been overdue for decades and will effect sweeping change for the betterment of all citizens of the U.S. and more importantly of this grand majestic planet called earth.

The GOP is trying to destroy Obama the way they came after Clinton. But it’s not going to work this time because people are onto their game. It’s going to backfire bigtime because people can see they are “for” nothing but Obama’s failing. I don’t think an opposition party in America has ever before so blatantly gone on record as wanting a new president to fail, not caring a whit about the country. This is why the Repubs. will get slaughtered in 2010 and 2012 and beyond.

On a TV program that Public TV runs, they had a person ask about a letter they had (she was with popular museum) the letter was signed by William Boothes father. Yes the one that shot President Lincoln. There for years had been a back and forth over it being real or a forgery. The text said clearly the elder Mr Boothe intended to kill the then President Jackson. After much tracking they found it was in fact a letter from Booth es Dad, and he did write that he wanted to kill the President. I guess in those days before so many Presidents had been either shot or killed it was common for the folks who did not win the elections to threaten a President and then finally do it. My point here is for years the family wanted to kill the opposition in order to have their own way and darned if they didn’t end up doing it.I see the GOP as feeling anything is good if it places them back in power. So this seems like a reasonable story to read and to believe. Things haven’t changed much and we still seem to be unable to keep Washington’s business ON dignified and civil plane.

Sara, Have you ever heard of freedom of the press.Does it ring a bell? Grow up and turn the channel to Fox to get the real news not the Democrats propaganda provided by ABC and George.

Has anyone actually listened to Obama? He’s taking over corporations and capitalism, the republicans aren’t fighting democrats, they’re fighting fascism.

Pelosi and Reid declared war on tens of millions of American citizens when they decided to deny them their constitutional right to have their voices heard, through their elected representatives, in the United States Congress.

Doesn’t anyone remember when Pelosi called the american public Nazis? This country was founded on the belief that the government must be questioned, why is it such a big deal that the GOP doesn’t agree with many of Obama’s decisions? People disagree, that’s government and life, just don’t label them as nazis or racists.

You know if someone would have the guts (media included) to broadcast the child trafficking that has been going on for years within the political ring (mostly republicans but some democrats) then see how much the GOP power would be smashed. There is a huge paper trail that links many of the high profile idiots that have been trying to block anything good would have to face up that they abused many of America’s children. WAKE UP AMERICAN’S…read Franklin Scandal or better yet google it. Triple fact checked with a ton of documentation but none of the media wants to touch it because they are controlled by the same idiots that run our country.

This country will soon be just a footnote in the history books….why ? Because this country is no longer by the people for the people. All of our lawmakers are bought and sold to the hightest bidder. ALL LOBBYING MUST BE OUTLAWED OR NOTHING WILL CHANGE !!!! Also….only the people making the median wage from their area should be allow to run. You have to be rich these days because only the rich can afford the advertising. Let the government give all those running equal air time and compesate the TV stations for the air time. The election period should not last more that 6 weeks. This is why we the people are no longer represented as we should be……our government is just as corrupt as Russia or China or most of the countrys in the world. America should set an example instead of being just another 3ed world country.

Man I’m so sick of these right-wing self-important whining GOP babies. Every time they don’t get their way they throw a temper tantrum. What happened to being loyal to your country and your leader even if you don’t agree with everything. Oh I forgot, the GOP way is the ONLY way.

Glen Beck rocks. What is so great is that he uses their words to make his point. He has them all on tape, praising Mao, talking of fundamentally changing America, saying old people cannot have good care and must be let to die. It’s all on tape. It’s our present administration.
And by the way I have voted Democratic all my life, as did my parents before me. But no more. I do not want to live in a socialist country. I happen to think we have the greatest system ever devised. The Democratic party of today in no way resembles the party of my parents or my youth. The party of Pelosi, Reed, Rangle is the party of deceit and corruption, we have had enough.

I don’t think George S. should be hosting a major network news show since he is a former Clinton Admin stooge. Just imagine the uproar if Rove was hosting a program on Fox. Georgie has no credibility about party politics since he was a key clinton admin stooge.

It makes no sence that R’s are preventing the american people from selecting a public insurance option. Choice is the american way!!! As for the bull about a “fine” if you don’t take public insurance, that is a R fairy tale. If you have insurance you keep it, if you are lower/middle income, you get a discount or pay nothing. Only the wealthy must pay if they choose not to be insured and how many wealthy people would do that???
As for putting insurance companies out of business, if they cannot provide affordable insurance for all people and cannot attract a upper income group of people for private insurance(if they want to target that market) they have no place in this economy.

No need to blame the democrats, just look at whats going on. Oh wait thats right a democrat would never accept responsiblity for any issues gone bad. so lets blame them and watch the rationalization that the party has perfected.

First of all the whole thing makes me sick. On one side people are holding their hands ready for that handout. And on the other side people are being put out of their homes, and can’t find a job. And yes, they made too much money last year to collect welfare or foodstamps, just untill they can get back on their feets, cause their kids have to eat. Then with pride they go back to work, and start all over again.
They don’t a hand out from the government, they get needed a hand up.

It’s Okay. The voters have declared war on the GOP. 18 more republican senate seats on the ballot in 2010 unless the people of Connecticut recall Lieberman. Then there will be 19.

George,
You can afford to agree with Obama….whatever he gets through Congress won’t affect you….you have so much money you can afford to go anywhere in the world for anything, be it medicine, fuel, etc.
Your an elitist, like the rest of Congress and you are probably getting it all free and laughing at the rest of this nation over the rim of the martini glass.

It is sickening that the GOP are so determined to prevent President Obama from filling positions in his administration. No one should think that President Obama has failed so far as president. Republicans are the ones who are failing America every day by doing only their best to stand opposed to good governing.

The real Undeclared War….Is by the leftist/marxist in this country on any that oppose their agenda. Homeland Security has declared conservative Americans as the greatest terror threat to America. Never mind that lately we have seen several Islamic Extremist terror plots stopped by the FBI and not Homeland Insecurity. Nevermind, that no conservative American has spoken or attempted violence. Okey, the conservative Americans have held PEACEFUL protest in the form of Tea Parties voicing their concerns over the direction of the current fiscal INSANITY in this country. Gee…go figure. Oh…the whitehouse has declared the Republicans the real enemy of the American people. I thought the Republicans were made up of…American citizens. Gee….what do I know. (sigh) Oh…then there is the whitehouse tour de’force declaration of war on the Fox media group. Well that will teach Fox to report the TRUTH, and how dare Fox Media ask challenging questions of the Obama administration. Most of the questions were not on the APPROVED media question list issued by YOUR whitehouse to the media. Also, there is the attempt by the Obama administration to silence talk radio, because yah just can’t have people telling the TRUTH when your administration is trying to sell INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY, and outright LIES. Now if you open your eyes a little bit, question some, and take the time to get news from multiple sources your gonna find out that the Obama administration has ALOT in common with Stalinist and Maoist tactics. Gee…..Neo-Marxist in America ….go figure. After all….Anita Dunn a working member of the Obama administration has clearly stated that Mao Tse-Tung is one of her favorite political philosophers. Oh, for those of you how can’t remember who Mao was….he was the Communist revolutionary in China around the time of Stalin, and is best known for the mass murder of 20 -50 million of his own people in the name of his political marxist vision. Hail Obama and the DNC.

They may get away with it for a while longer. I wish they would let the Surgeon General thru as she has had her hearings. We do have a H1N1 Pandemic and the regular flu hasn’t started yet. I feel she is needed now. This happens everytime a new admin comes in. The SG is being held up because of something relating to extending unemployment benefits. This one could certainly backfire on the GOP. No money makes one testy.

I think the GOP is waging a WAR ON AMERICA and their pawns are their counterparts in the Congress.
WE the PEOPLE are the victims of their treason.
They are traitors. It feels like the South Confederacy is rising again and we are sitting here helpless to stop it.

Hose much of a majority does this country have?
I was a lifelong Republican and libertarian. I had a change of heart after the Clinton administration, when the cheerleaders of the right had different standards for the butcher of Crawford.
Clinton may epitomized the Arkansas sleaze bag pol – but Bush was a new low in presidential largesse – an ineducable, dangerous thug, drunk on the power of an arriviste.
It was then I understood the depravity of the GOP. This Main St merchant had more in common with the AFLCIO than Wall St.
I require a middle class to support my business… and the GOP had been reduced to rural evangelical xenophobes manipulated by nihilistic multi national corporations and investment banks.
NO thank you.
The GOP has nothing in common with much of America… but they offer enough raw meat to their haters that the base has no where else to go…
talk about your chickens voting Colonel Saunders… Rednecks and Insurance moguls against Islam, homosexuals and Hollywood.
Strange marriage indeed.

Wow, Jack Trent, such big words!
I’m the real Republican Party.
I believe in civil liberties and limited government intrusion.
I believe I can make better decisions for ourself than the government.
I believe in fiscal responsibility. If the money isn’t there, prioritize and do what you can til the money IS there.
I believe in loyalty to country over party.
I vote my conscience and my priorities. If the GOP candidate matches me, it will get my vote. If the Democratic matches me, that’s the way I vote.
I do not believe in tearing down my elected officials, regardless of party. But if I disagree with them, they will hear about it.
Yes, I’m the real Republican, and I’m not alone. We’re not evil; we don’t hate for the sake of hating. But you push us, and we will push right back.

That’s funny Wanda, I didn’t hear you complaining when W & Company let Helen Thomas and the likes sit in at the White House but never permitted them to ask a question in 8 years. So, the GOP supposedly in an undeclared war with Obama is worth writing about? What about the fact that the “news” it took the MSM (including ABC) days and days before they realized it was news, should be written about again? Another tape was released a couple weeks ago proving that Philly ACORN workers did NOT try to kick out the hooker & pimp (as Lewis claimed) and the police report they filed only said they had a verbal disturbance. Not to mention the ban on ACORN (taxpayer paid) funding will expire on Holloween at midnight. Is that not worthy of at least a small article?

The Republicans SHOULD use every delay tactic, every procedure available at their disposal. This democratically controlled congress, senate and white house have shown no love for republicans or any desire to work in a bipartisan fashion. It takes two to tango, but you can’t say “We (the dems) have been reaching across the aisle”. That’s B.S. and you know it. Dem’s have been reaching across the aisle saying “It’s our way or the highway”.
Screw ‘em…..republicans should screw the socialist government at every turn. Every freaking turn.

As a person who worked hard enough on the Bush/Chaney 2000 Campaign to be invited the the Innogruation, I think what the White House is doing is smart. Fox News is the most divisive organization on the planet. The more attention the White House can bring to bear on Fox News, the more Fox News will divide and alienate the various factions of the Grand Old Party. Wasn’t Julius Caesar who first said, “Divide and Conquer?”

You libs don’t seem to have a long memory. Remember when the memo came out from the Ted Kennedy staffer telling Carl Levin from Michigan to keep his hold on a Bush nominee to the 7th circuit court of appeals because if Bush’s nominee was approved he could upset the balance on the Grutter v. Bollinger decision. Or what the libs did to Miguel Estrada when they fired out the memo that said stop all Bush nominees of minorities so that the libs could paint the Repubs as the party of whites only….You guys are full of it.

If democrats expect to win both houses again in 2010, they need to stop calling those who don’t agree with them “the Party of No”. It’s become grating to many who said “Yes, we can” and are now regretting they didn’t say “No way, anyday”…like me and my family of voters.
Posted by: Rob | October 28, 2009, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm
I think it’s not only childish but a stupid move on the republicans part. the majority of americans saw nothing positive come their way during the bush admin, and now the republicans are trying to continue that trend and gridlock the government. The democrats are managing to press on without them. The party of no is also the party of status quo – and I think that for the majority, that just isn’t acceptable. If the republicans aren’t careful – and if they continue to choose to remain on the sidelines, they’ll be in for unexpected surprises the next election cycle. They live in an alternate reality right now – but they could very well be in for a good heavy dose of reality.

Hmmmmmm…Since the Democrat Party has become completely dedicated to stealing as much money as possible from those who produce and buying votes with it by giving the funds away to the unproductive to maintain their political power…..maybe we NEED a “Party of NO!” to prevent a complete collapse of the United States.
