Hoosier Daddy?
Joe Andrew, you’re headed to Costa Rica!
More than a year ago, Andrew — a Hoosier, superdelegate and former leader of the Democratic Parties in both Indiana and DC — switched from backing then-Sen. Hillary Clinton to then-Sen. Barack Obama just days before the May 6, 2008 Indiana primary.
And this week President Obama nominated his wife, Anne Slaughter Andrew, to be the ambassador to the Republic of Costa Rica.
She’s “currently the Principal of New Energy Nexus, LLC and advises companies and entrepreneurs on investments and strategies to capitalize on the New Energy Economy,” the White House press release says. “Andrew has successfully advised companies in her corporate environmental/energy law practice, serving as Of Counsel at Bingham McHale and as Co-Chair of the Environment/Energy Team at Baker & Daniels, and also serving as a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Patton & Boggs.”
“It's not often that a plum ambassadorship goes to someone who isn't a career foreign service officer or a big bucks campaign contributor,” notes The Hotline.
"I have been inspired," Andrew wrote in a lengthy letter to superdelegates and Indiana voters just days before the Indiana primary. "Don't settle for the tried and true and simplistic slogans, but listen to your heart and dare to be inspired.”
At the time Andrew told ABC News that after a "very personal and as you can imagine somewhat tortuous process," that in his role as former party chair and because of "an accident of timing where my home state of Indiana may help decide who the next president will be" that "though it would be easier for me duck and cover, it's better to tell people what's in my heart."
"Barack Obama would be the better president," Andrew told ABC News at the time.
Clinton ultimately won the Democratic primary 51%-49%, but because she was said to have been favored to win there, and Obama had won the North Carolina primary by a much larger margin, 56%-42%, pundits denied her any rhetorical momentum. Democratic delegate math also makes a 51-49 victory fairly inconsequential.
¡Uno mas Ron Centenario por favor!

I’m shocked! We know that those appointments are meant for big donors. The gall of President Obama to give the Ambassadorship to someone qualified.
Will the Washington Post and the NYTimes have to write articles again about how the rich are suffering during this recession.

Too bad the right doesn’t have some actual policies and programs to offer instead of the sleazy smear campaign.

Plum ambassadorships go to political appointees. First, the intended party makes a large financial contribution to the presidential candidate’s campaign. That is commonly how you purchase an ambassadorship. It’s not about qualification, unfortunately. It’s a big reason why our foreign relations aren’t terribly good.
