Plouffe Book: Bill Sunk Hillary’s V.P. Chances

David Plouffe seems to confirm what a lot of us suspected during last summer's VP deliberations: that Barack Obama wouldn't pick Hillary Clinton because he couldn't figure out how to make a former President named Bill part of his White House family ABC News' Teddy Davis has more: Obama campaign manager David Plouffe writes in his forthcoming book about the 2008 race that the future president was “clearly thinking more seriously” about picking Hillary Clinton as his running mate than Plouffe or advisor David Axelrod realized. Plouffe’s book suggests, however, that former President Bill Clinton sunk Hillary’s chances. “I still think Hillary has a lot of what I am looking for in a VP,” Obama is quoted as telling Plouffe and Axelrod during a meeting on the VP selection process. “Smarts, discipline, steadfastness.” Obama then adds, however: “I think Bill may be too big a complication. If I picked her, my concern is that there would be more than two of us in the relationship.” Thanks to The Bill Factor, Hillary, who was on the final list of six possible running mates, did not make the final list of three. The book confirms, as reported at the time, that the three finalists were: Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D), and eventual choice Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. Plouffe’s book, “The Audacity to Win,” is set to be published on Nov. 3. TIME is running a lengthy excerpt in Friday’s magazine. It can be previewed HERE.

He wanted: “Smarts, discipline and steadfastness.” So how come he picked Joe Biden?

The VP could be my Down’s syndrome son for all he does.
My son is happy, a good hand shaker, goes to bed early, is always polite.
A perfect VP for Obama

Hillary would have been a great choice. I skipped to the poles as it was to vote for Obama, I probably would have ran had Hillary been on the ticket.

Ok who cares. We have a Party Puppet in Office another Party Puppet in the VP Role. The only difference if it had been Ms Clinton as VP would be choice of Restrooms

And Obama and his “team” want us to believe this load of crap? The only reason he chose Biden is because Biden’s as dumb as a stump and wouldn’t be a threat to Obama’s intelligence or ego. That plus there was nobody left in Chicago he could choose that wasn’t corrupt. I’m not a Hillary fan by any stretch of the imagination, but if she was elected, she wouldn’t have went around the world apologizing for this country, and wouldn’t have gotten the “Olympic” door slammed in her face. Anyway, I’m quite sure she would have accomplished a hell of a lot more than this clown has. The only thing Obama has accomplished in nine months that Hillary couldn’t, is be awarded the Nobel prize for whatever it was they GAVE it to Obama for.

Safe to say Bill sunk Hillary’s chance of being president, too.

It’s history now. Obama has put a team of strong minds together showing his maturity and leadership. He and they will all tell you Obama is president and we serve at his will.

08 gave us nothing but bad choices for President and Vice President. Hillary would have just taken Biden’s place as bad choice. Let’s hope 2012 will bring something better.

the media has coddled him the entire time. it represents quite a biased view of news. I feel like i’m back living in communist russia where the news was completely controlled by the state.

are you talking about Ms. Palin’s Son????

Posted by: sara | October 29, 2009, 8:22 am 8:22 am

You ran to the “poles”? What did Polish people have to do with the election? At least Hillary wouldn’t have had the delusions that Obama does, changing his stories about how he was put to the ticket six or seven times, lying about his own life story, lying that his wife was killed by a drunk driver — I guess just having her die in a car accident wasn’t tragic enough. Amazing that Hillary could be LESS of a liar than someone, but it was so. I wish she had won. I’d definitely have picked her over McCain.

Posted by: WIlliam | October 29, 2009, 8:26 am 8:26 am

Hillary would have been better but they really feared her, she might still challeng this bunch of screwballs that want to tax everthing and take away from the elderly.

Posted by: earl | October 29, 2009, 8:26 am 8:26 am

It’s amazing that so much emphasis is placed on the VP candidate when they have such a negligible role (unless something happens to the president). Even knowing this I’m as guilty of it as anyone else. McCain lost my support when he chose a vaccuous tart as his running mate, and Obama would have lost me even faster if he chose that loveless shrew Hillary.

LOL…damn the Prez shoud has “clout”.. “Controls the Media”…can become President in our Country without being a Nationalized citizen… And if you’ve ever really lived in Russia, YOU Would KNOW the Difference, now wouldn’t you! Nobody’s buying your stupid rationale and Lies…and it’s sad when someone doesn’t want to know the truth….poor things.

Posted by: sara | October 29, 2009, 8:28 am 8:28 am

Likely it would not have mattered who was chosen as VP; Soros, Emanuel, Axlerod seem to be running this show. Obama is little more than a talented reader.
As one who believes in the original values of our nation – independence, personal responsibility, faith, and prosperity – I, along with millions of other citizens, can’t wait for the opportunity to send this group of big government slave masters back to obscurity!

Posted by: Debbie | October 29, 2009, 8:31 am 8:31 am

ANY VP selection would have been better than the one McCain selected (i.e. Palin). How could McCain’s choice get any worse?? He didn’t vette her, her entire family is disfunctional, immoral and corrupt (except maybe Trig), claim a moral high ground they can’t even stand on, and on and on. I’m so glad an intelligent person is in the White House now.

Posted by: George | October 29, 2009, 8:33 am 8:33 am

Who would want to be Pres in this day and age? Bush was the first to get a real taste of internet info, and now Obama is getting hit with it too. I don’t think anyone will be immune to this in the future, and if they are, I don’t want to vote for them.

Some people are always taking about “Chicago politicans”….Mr. Obama was Never part of none of that…he’s totally from a newer generation of politicians….and didn’t really have any connected political friends….His supporters came from the community and based on the good he had done there…I met Mr. Obama in 1991, a skinny kid, fresh I thought from college.. with the same swagger, and the wide smile he has now, asking questions, listening and really geniune concerned…..at this time he was making sure that the Justice system, in that County was abiding by the Federal Laws on overcrowding and sleeping on floors….yes, there are innocents in jail, and their constitutional rights has to be honored until proven differnt.. Matter of fact the establishment didn’t like him…. how I know I was born and raised in Chicago….and all corruption was reported by OUR Local News, or even Investigated by them….More than I can say about those good ‘ole boys down south…kin folks works for the entire State in key positions, and the local news better not coma “stoopint”. I live in Georgia now, and can’t believe there’s no Corruption going on….Pleeeeeeeeeze

hkdakota,
We get it! You’re gleefully rooting for America to go down because Obama is President. We get it that you’re a Rush Limbaugh follower! We get it that you’re hoping that the unemployment rate continues to go up! We get it that you hope America is brought to its knees to prove your point that Obama is bad for the country! We get it! You’re happy now? Now, go get your medicines and let grown-ups have a discussion. We’ll wake you up in three years come election time, ok?

Posted by: sara | Oct 29, 2009 8:37:10 AM: Okay a few things for you the economy shows no sign of improving and in fact it has got worse since Obama took office but I guess you ignore facts.Unemployment up to 9.53% The 3.5% growth you are talking about is said to be a temporary growth that will not last. So basically it is like cash for clunkers and the growth will disappear. 49 out of 50 states lost jobs, and now we know the number of jobs created or saved by the stimulus was greatly overstated. Iraq and Afghanistan under Bush were not Vietnam like conflicts. Under Bush the Surge in Iraq (apposed by Obama and Democrats) worked to perfection adding much needed security until Iraq forces could get things together and take a larger roll in protection. Afghanistan well lets see American Deaths are up 56% from 2007 and 40% from 2008 and civilian deaths are up 24% under Obama! So from where I stand he is not doing very well at all! And you will see the effects of his failure in 2010 and 2012.

You all sound like a bunch of football fanatics arguing over quarterbacks. ‘Fran Tarkenton was a much better QB than Brett Farve ever will be…’ Get over your homer mentality. This country of OURS is a mess (here’s where you’re thinking it’s ‘insert President’s name here’ fault. SHUT UP.) Again stop being a lackey for your team and wake up to reality. Our Nation’s fore-fathers are spinning in their graves. Whether it’s a VP who ran the White House or a Speaker and President who favor Socialism it’s all wrong….and all but the biggest homers know it and can speak to it. If you want to argue with one another pick a team…Yankees or Phillies. If you want to make a difference offer solutions.

Bill Clinton forgot that he really wasn’t the great campaigner he though he was. He was elected by a plurality of the vote and ONLY because Ross Perot siphoned away so many votes from HW Bush, everyone forgets about this. I’m glad he cost her the Vice Presidency.

Posted by: john kesrouan | October 29, 2009, 10:27 am 10:27 am

Hillary may be regretting her choice. She could have stayed Senator from NY for as long as she wanted. She took the State job to shore up her foreign policy credentials to possibly run again for President. If she had stayed in the Senate, she could have still run for President again, but more importantly, when Reid loses in Nevada next year, she would have been a leading candidate for Senate Majority Leader. As SML, she would have profoundly more influence than she does now and could have kept the job a long time. Between Holbroooke and all of Obama’s other “special assistants” in hot spots, she does not have the influence she thought she would. She may be regretting that move.

Posted by: halsted | October 29, 2009, 10:41 am 10:41 am

Putting Hillary in to the position of Secretary of State, was a huge error, in the face of the issues with the Middle East.
Now we see John Kerry being given the job of negotiating with the Middle East, because Hillary, as a female is given no importance, in the Middle East.
Just another of Obama’s glaring miscalculations.

I guess they were in on the conspiracy even then huh? So clever!

Simply stated, “I have a problem with absolute trust inc certain individuals”. Being in a position of authority requires one to have trust to the nth degree with your supporting cast, especially when there are responsibilities associated wih said positions.
Bill can be trusted, Hillary can be trusted and Barack can be trusted. But, there is always an uncurrent of disbelief because of past behaviors or perception of what might be. I think Bill has handled himself admirably throughout the process and I hold him in high esteem.
Hillary sounds like a person who will listen but make her own decisions, and that is what is required because of the responsilities she holds. That is a good thing. Listen to all sides of the issue and act accordingly. I wish more people could do that instead of placating or reactionary.

Posted by: JR Jake | October 29, 2009, 10:49 am 10:49 am

Obama can be petty and childish, that’s why he didn’t pick Hillary. Now he’s stuck with the dope Biden and he doesn’t have all the Dems behind him trying to help him, geez, I wonder why. Blaming the former president for Obama’s bad pick, again, is childish.

Yes, what I heard from the LYING press at the time was ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. That there were LEGAL hurdles in running a backgound check on Bill Clinton. Which kind of surprised me, considering he was a former President with access to an intense amount of state secrets. But then, when I considered the source, I can distinctly remember a All Things Conservative “journalist” on Nationalist Propaganda Radio (NPR) make just this claim, that Bill Clinton would never meet the background check.
Not that what this “journalist” claims what everyone was thinking AT ALL.

A VP should have a different opinion than President, but should support President. This way, a VP gives others side view to President to re-consider every decision. Thus Joe Biden is a perfect choice to Obama.

Yeah, no corruption in Chicago, like there’s no fake boobs in Hollywood, right? Just ask Blago about Rahm, Axelrod, Burris, Daley, etc. They are so corrupt, they make the KGB look honest. Obama had Bill Ayers write his book, “Dreams of my Father” as reported by news outlets not concerned with access to White House party invitations. Did Bush ever target MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS for their liberal bias? No. Did Bush ever try to demonize industry, insurance, etc.? Did he ever try to take all of our money for taxes?? Did he ever try to tax us to death??? This is OUR MONEY NOT OUR GOVERNMENTS MONEY TO TAKE!! THEY WORK FOR US AND SHOULD GET OUT OF OUR BUSINESS!!

Yeah sure, as if you’d be allowed to post your opinion freely. First it was socialism now communism, blah, blah, blah. We voted for change and its here regardless of your opinion. Just wait your turn, we did for 8 years. Last time I checked you coundn’t vote in a communist country.

The majority of the college students voted Obama in office because they thought he was going to change politics. What change? And the economy is not better it is getting worse. Don’t believe what you read about 650,000 jobs saved. Companies are closing every day and the unemployment is getting worse. It is so bad that seniors are not getting a raise in their checks this year and maybe not the year after. Obama stated he was going to give the seniors a stimulus check in the amount of $250.00. I will believe it when it happens. Pelosi and Reid need to be voted out of office. And Reid my lose his election bid. Thank goodness for that. The republicans need to get back on track and take over the house again.
