President Obama Warns Iran: ‘Our Patience Is Not Unlimited’

Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report:

President Obama appeared in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House Thursday afternoon to demand that leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran take concrete actions to defuse international tensions regarding its nuclear program, beginning with allowing the International Atomic Energy Agency “full access” to Iran’s nuclear facility at Qom within the next two weeks.

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, with whom the president has been in close contact, will be arriving in Tehran in the next few days, the president said.

“Our patience is not unlimited,” the president said, alluding to tougher economic sanctions if Iran does not take the necessary steps. “The United States will not continue to negotiate indefinitely, and we are prepared to move towards increased pressure.”

The president said that today’s meeting between Iranian leaders and the representatives of countries from the United Nations Security Council permanent members – the US, China, Russia, France, the UK – as well as Germany, “was a constructive beginning, but it must be followed with constructive action by the Iranian government.”

He suggested that Iranian rulers take “confidence-building” steps such as transferring low-enriched uranium from the Tehran Research Reactor to a third-country for fuel fabrication so others could verify that that nuclear program is for peaceful means.

Mr. Obama put today’s talks within the context of his outreach to Iran since taking office, efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, and last week’s UN Security Council meeting.

“The result is clear,” the president said. “We have an international community that has reaffirmed its commitment to nonproliferation and disarmament.  That's why the Iranian government heard a clear and unified message from the international community in Geneva” that they “must demonstrate through concrete steps” that they intend to live up to their previous obligations and abide by previous United Nations Security Council resolutions about its nuclear program.

The president said he is not interested in mere talk for talk’s sake.

“There is a path towards a better relationship with the United States, increased integration for Iran within the international community, and a better future for all Iranians,” he said. “The burden of meeting these responsibilities lies with the Iranian government, and they are now the ones that need to make that choice.”

Oh brother—Hey Obama, Iran isn’t scared of you and it is very doubtful that you would go against the Sauds to get Iran. It isn’t like you don’t dislike Israel to boot or seem to have more in common with muslims/terrorists than any others.

“I’m going to count the three and if you don’t (fill in blank) I’m going to (fill in blank).”
From Obama:
“…increased integration for Iran within the international community, and a better future for all Iranians.”
Where was The One when Iranians were protesting in streets this summer? No “better life” for them? (I remember now – He was bullying Honduras – quite a tough guy).

Does Obama see that his indecision on
most things is a policy that can be
read by the world??? His arrogance does
not allow him to see things in reality,
only what HE believes it to be. So
dangerous for this country. Iran is
run by a bunch of nuts and for Obama
to draw lines in the sand and think
they will all fall into line is truly
a far fetched dream of his. God help
us all.

Yet our patience should be very generous. We should not take military action against Iran, because they are not a threat to us, and we should continue to be civil and diplomatic, even if it takes years.
Last time we flaunted around these warnings and exaggerated nuclear programs we went to war with Iraq and bankrupted our country and destroyed tons of innocent communities in the process. It was wrong. Iran is not a threat to us, they are not threatening us, and we have no reason to pre-emptively strike, ESPECIALLY when diplomatic talks are occurring.
Stop and prevent all wars, bring back our soldiers, and take us back to civility please.

Obama you need to take care of Afgahnistan and our troops who are dying over there waiting for help. You are afraid to send more troops to help and are taking your time. Yet you warn Iran. What the he– are you going to do? Buy a time out chair for him to sit in at the UN? This is the most weak president since Jimmy Carter who cowed down to the Iranians when he held office. It took Reagan to tell Iran He is coming after them when he is sworn in to get those hostages released. Difference’ Reagan will do it Obama will pretend.

Wow tough words from our president. Hey mr. president – 43 American soldiers have died in Afghanistan since General McChrystal requested more troops on 8/30/09. This is life and death. What are you going to do about it tough guy?

Iran has every right to pursue what they want just like the US and Israel. If they or their surrogates try and use them on Israel, they will be blown into yesterday. Quite frankly, we have killed many more civilians over the last several decades than Iran has so maybe they should be requesting a tour of our nuclear plants. I just can’t stand hypocrisy.

President Obama, shiver me timbers, don’t maul me tiger. I remember one debate you had with McCain on the issue of Iran and McCain predicted this precise circumstance and how you would react to it. He nailed it when I thought at the time he was the one nuts. And you thought having a personal meeting with Ahmadinejad would do the trick. The tricks on you with N. Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, Poland and the Czech Republic, from China and Russia with love. Even Sarkozy knows you’re a bag of inexperienced fluff.
We need jobs, we need more support troops for our Military in Afghanistan, and we need relief from the banks that we taxpayers financed who are hiding our money under their proverbial beds taking all of us for a ride without any protections from you the one who put this deal together. What we don’t need is the 2016 Olympics. Where are you and where have you been for nine months? Get something done, anything so I can partially redeem myself for voting for you. Oh and lets just forget that transparency thingy.

everyone must use single ply tolietpaper – Iran has supplied insurgent with the IED tech, but we are the biggest supplier of weapons to the world by far. Just look at the killing Israel does with some of them. Our biggest killer is sanctions however. Remember the million Iraqis that our sanctions took out under Clinton. the million deaths that Albright said was ok on 60 minutes. Our troops should not even be there for this illegal undeclared war.

Unbelievable — Is Obama just now aware that “Our patience is not unlimited” and “The United States will not continue to negotiate indefinitely” — Isn’t that what he criticized Bush for??? — Now is Obama “saber-rattling” — what a naive buffoon — The first time in our history that the FRENCH President was more aggresive than the POTUS!!!

“The most recent Presidential job approval ratings from the two most accurate pollsters in the 2008 election”
There are a few things wrong with this statement:
1. By what measure are these two the “most accurate pollsters in the 2008 election”?
2. Assuming you mean that these two orgs. predicted with the highest degree of accuracy the outcome of the 2008 election, there is a significant difference in conducting opinion polls vs. predicting election outcomes.
But if it helps you sleep at night “knowing” The One’s approval ratings are in the mid-50s, knock yourself out.
(BTW, as of 9/24 Gallup shows The One’s approval rating at 52% – I’d trust Gallup before the two “most accurate pollsters” you referenced)

Meanwhile in Iran the laughter has not stopped.
Obama: “…negotiate indefinitely, and we are prepared to move towards increased pressure”.
Translation: Iran has at least 2-3 more years to work on their nuclear weapons.

Iran also agreed to allow U.N. inspectors into its covertly built enrichment plant during the talks, held at a villa outside Geneva. The discussions appeared to defuse tensions that had been building for weeks.
Speaking in Washington, Obama called the talks “a constructive beginning” and said Iran must match its words with action.
Tehran “must grant unfettered access” to international inspectors within two weeks, he said.

If Ahmajinedad were to fire a nuclear missle during the Bush administration, the US would be at war with Iraq the very next day. Ahmajinedad knew that and that’s why he only fired the nuclear missile under the Obama administration.
Ahmajinedad believes in the coming of the Muslim version of Armaggedon which is followed by the second coming of the “Mahdi”. Ahmajinedad wants to speed things up and bring on this Armaggedon with him as the leader. This means eliminating all “infidels”. That is Isrealis and all their allies, including the US.
Ahmajinedad wants to bring about a far holier Iran with woman wearing veals and keeping hidden. Obama wants to “negotiate” with Ahmajinedad by sending Hillary to the region wearing PANTS.
Yes Skip, I can REALLY see where Ahmajinedad will listen to Obama and take him and Hillary seriously.

“The Fordham analysis…” blah blah blah
Posted by: Fascist Hyena | Oct 1, 2009 8:50:22 PM
Wrong, Fascist, WRONG.
Did you notice what it said at the very top of that “Fordham analysis”:
“Poll Accuracy in the 2008 Presidential Election
—Initial Report, November 5, 2008—”
The report was done the day after the election, using incorrect preliminary popular vote percentages.
Did you even read what you posted from that report?
“6.15-point popular vote lead”
Didn’t that give you a clue that something was amiss? The official popular vote was 52.93% to 45.65% – that’s a 7.28-point lead for Obama, not 6.15.
Even Rasmussen notes the change from preliminary numbers. Last November 6th, he wrote:
“The final Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Election 2008 showed Barack Obama leading John McCain 52% to 46%. We are pleased to report that those figures precisely matched the actual election returns.”
Currently, Rasmussen writes:
“In 2008, Obama won 53%-46% and our final poll showed Obama winning 52% to 46%.”
So, dear Fascist, CNN/Opinion Research and McClatchy/Ipsos were most accurate with their poll figures of 53% to 46%. Rasmussen and Pew with 52% to 46% were close, but no cigar.

someone with a Backbone! Ugh!

I agree with JP. Let’s give this president a chance. He may rank right up there with Hoover, Wilson, LBJ and Carter.

I don’t think our country stands a chance if we keep giving this president a chance.
All these chances are hurting not helping us.

“If you don’t halt your nuclear program
right now I’ll hold my breath
until I turn blue!”
Tough economic sanctions are only the same as holding one’s breath to the disreputable fringe. Ahmadinejad would probably like it if we bombed his facilities–guaranteed executive employment for the rest of his life. Right now he’s not very popular; In fact he probably lost the last election; Tough sanctions will weaken his position even further. Ahmadinejad would love it if Israel bombed him. He could justify this supposed holy war all the right-wingers think he wants to start. Do you think America is up for that? Do you think it will make things easier for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan? Anybody who thinks threatening Iran with an attack will be productive is out of touch.

Great headline, Jake and Sunlen. You had to know it would evoke peals of laughter around the world and you had the guts to file it anyway. Keep your spirits up, and ours, too. It’s a tough job putting a credible spin on the White House beat.

Ahmajinedad knew that and that’s why he only fired the nuclear missile under the Obama administration.

‘fired the nuclear missile”.. whoa…
I missed the explosion, where and when did the detonation take place

They feared Reagan and what he would do.

what the Mr. Ray-Gun did was align the US military support with Saddam against Iran,.. in that terrible conflict it’s estimated that 250,000 Iranians died, many from WMD weapons.
ironic that it was OK for Saddam, sanctioned by the US to kill Iranians with WMD’s, but ‘W’ had to start a war with Iraq because of non-existent WMD’s years later.. go figure..
It’s unfortunate that many don’t take the time to review the history of the region for the last 60 – 80 years and see how and why we have arrived at the point we are at today.

That’s a lot easier to say when you are out of range.

“So to me, it sounds a whole lot like déjà vu, exactly the kind of nonsense that led us into a no-win, nonsensical war in Iraq where we’re still bogged down. We’re bogged down in Afghanistan and Pakistan and here they are trying to stir up another fight with another country. It is of no benefit to the American people. It is of no benefit to our national security interest and the sooner we get to the bottom of this and know the facts, the better off we would be as Americans.” – Congressman Paul

so, does obama still think he can sit down with ahmadenjad and talk this out? i can’t be the only one who has come to realize that obama’s as naive as he is arrogant.

“bet Ahmajinedad and his government are much more concerned about Obama.”

Why hasn’t anyone taken up the Jimmy Carter idea of “leave Iran alone.”
LOL – frigging Jimmy Carter – what a joke. He was a joke as President, he is a joke now.

Maybe it’s time for that face to face chat with M.A. .. didn’t I hear that nonsense.. didn’t the current S.O.S. say it was election bunk?

If we went into Iran instead of Iraq which by the way was the bigger threat at the time and still is,we wouldn’t have to be dealing with this now.It seems President Oboma has inherited many problems.I think that the President has access to alot more info than we are getting and things are changing by the minute,so give the guy a chance to do his job.

Obama, October 1:
‘Our Patience Is Not Unlimited’
Obama Oct 2:
“Just kidding. Our patience is unlimited”
from The Hill:
‘A State Department spokesperson on Friday signaled the president’s mandate that Iran has two weeks to permit inspections of its recently unveiled uranium refinement plant was not “written in stone.”’

Posted by: drjohn | October 3, 2009, 7:15 am 7:15 am

I thought Obama can make a speech and Iran would listen to him.

I’m sure Iran is giving our President’s words very careful consideration, and right about now are thinking, “…will we send an Olympic team to Rio to compete with the infidels….?”
As for this nuclear bomb/ Israel issue, I really don’t think they’re paying any attention, at all.

Here we go again. Obama is acting like Bush. Iran hasn’t broke any international laws, yet he is saying “Our patience is not unlimited”? I think when he says “Our” he refers to the bankers making a literal killing on these endless wars and the military industrial complex, not the American people. I knew this guy would be just like the one, just better spoken.
