President Obama’s Message to Wall Street Tonight on Regulatory Reforms: “Don’t Fight Them”
The president will be shaking the New York money tree this evening at two DNC fundraisers expected to rake in around $3 million.
According to prepared remarks, he will say: “And while I’m here in New York, I want to stress again the urgency of financial reform. The finance industry is essential to a healthy economy and the well-being of our country. That is why we stepped in to prevent a collapse which would have had far reaching and devastating consequences for the American people. But we as a country should never again be faced with such a potential calamity because of the reckless speculation and deceptive practices of a short-sighted and self-interested few.”
He will then add: “So if there are folks from the industry here tonight, I ask you to join with us in passing what are necessary reforms; don’t fight them. It’s important for our country. And in the long run, it will be good for your industry to have a level playing field in which everyone knows the rules – and everyone knows that the rules will be enforced.”

Good for him. This is the type of honesty we’ve been missing for a while – *while asking financial industry players for donations* Obama is also clearly and explicitly telling them what their country is asking of them. It certainly is not “ask not what you country can do for you,” but it is on par with a thousand points of light.

I dont presume he means Barney Frank.
Or the politicians on both sides of the aisle that repeatedly encouraged weakening mortgage-lending standards; that maintained a very cheap dollar, encouraging highly leveraged investments….
It should be clear that the Fed never ‘prevented’ any collapse. AIG and Fannie/Freddie DID collapse; Citigroup is still on life support; the Fed forced BoA and Merrill into a merger that may sink both; the ‘stimulus’ spending has done nothing except make lending nations consider dumping our paper on the rightful concern of inflation.
All Washington is doing is *pretending* to be making a difference. In the process they will pass a bunch of, at best, useless regulations, at worst, things that drive industry into the dirt or overseas.

Obama said: “That is why we stepped in to prevent a collapse which would have had far reaching and devastating consequences for the American people.” —
What exactly did Obama do to prevent a devastating collapse? It was Bush who passed TARP, which at the time was designed to prevent the far-reaching and devastating collapse. Obama came in several months after Tarp was passed and passed a stimulus bill, but it’s most would agree that the threat of collapse had passed – most banks were working on repaying the tarp money. The stimulus money was designed to protect and create jobs – and although it has had some modest success, it’s truly a stretch to say it prevented a devastating and far-reaching collapse.

Can right wingers make up their minds?
Is TARP responsible from saving us from the abyss or is it the the cause of our huge budget deficit?
Here’s a clue, Obama, the Democrats and President Bush worked to make TARP happen.
The rest of the GOP stood on the sidelines.
Between the time TARP was supposed to be passed to the week later when it finally was the market went into a full panic.
Thanks GOPers for making a terrible situation all the worse.

Luckily, Ryan C, you don’t have any trouble making up your mind: you’re very sure about things that just aren’t true.
I’m sure glad “Obama, the Democrats and President Bush” were sufficient to pass TARP all by themselves while “The rest of the GOP stood on the sidelines.” I’m glad Alexander (TN), Gregg (NH), Kyl (AZ), Lugar (IN), Snowe (ME), Voinovich (OH) weren’t actually voting for TARP but were actually “making a terrible situation all the worse.”

CNN poll of 1,008 “adults”:
WASHINGTON (CNN) – For the first time since he took over in the White House, Americans don’t see eye to eye with President Barack Obama on the important issues, according to a new national poll. But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey does indicate that a majority approve of how Obama’s handling his duties as president.
According to the poll, which was released Tuesday, 48 percent of people questioned say that they agree with Obama on the issues that matter most to them, with 51 percent saying no. That’s a switch from April, when 57 percent said they agreed with the president on important issues, with 41 percent disagreeing.

CNN poll of 1,008 “adults”:
Gotta love how Fascist Hyena puts quotes around adults, like adults are distasteful somehow.
So the two pollsters who most accurately predicted the 2008 presidential election results, CNN and Ipsos/McClatchy, have Obama’s job approval at 55% to 43% and 56% to 40%, respectively.

Often the approval index bounces up or down by a point or two without any change in Obama’s broader approval rating. Jake Tapper showed strength and resolve in questioning the Obama administration’s attempts to suppress Fox News. Jake will very likely be reprimanded or fired by ABC News and he will lose out on any future Obama administration interviews; but Jake was aware of the consequences and concluded that being an American was far more important. Jake now has my respect. ABC News needs to follow Jake’s lead; as opposed to following the lead of a White House Communications Director, who announced publicly in front of an audience of high school students, that her mentor is Mao Tse Tung.

I find it strange that, rather than persuading people to the correctness of his position, Pres. Obama routinely tells people to shut-up, get out of the way, not to fight him or his agenda, etc. Then he wonders why people fear he may have secret dictatorial proclivities. He brings out peoples’ paranoia. The insurance industry (see Humana) or the Chamber of Commerce come out against health reform; instead of arguing against their claims, he shuts them down or, in the case of FOX, he shuts them out. Not very liberal or open-minded or tolerant.
Say what you will about G.W.Bush, but he showed class in the face of protests and opposition. I remember when anti-war protesters were giving him a hard time and a reporter asked him about it and he said he disagreed but that he was glad they were exercising their right to speak out. That’s presidential; that’s American. Obama acts like neither.

More right wing revisionism
“President Bush dismissed antiwar protests today as a factor in his plans for confronting Iraq and pressed ahead with a strategy to persuade reluctant allies that United Nations weapons inspections would not secure the disarmament of Saddam Hussein.
In his first public comments about the antiwar demonstrations by millions of people over the weekend in the United States and abroad, Mr. Bush said his overriding goal was to protect the American people and that leadership sometimes involved bucking public opinion.
“Size of protest ? it’s like deciding, well, I’m going to decide policy based upon a focus group,” Mr. Bush said in response to a reporter’s question at the White House. “The role of a leader is to decide policy based upon the security, in this case, the security of the people.”

There’s a difference between not making policy decisions based on an opponent’s point-of-view and telling opponents to shut up and get out of the way.
The point I was trying to make was that Bush, at least not in his public statements, respected opponents’ contribution to the debate; Obama doesn’t want to have one.
