Roundtable on Olympics, Jobs and Afghanistan

On our roundtable George Will, Cokie Roberts, Katrina vanden Heuvel and Matthew Dowd weighed in on Obama's Olympic trip, the impact of the economy on his presidency, and McChrystal's speech on the way forward in Afghanistan – did the General get ahead of his Commander-in-Chief?

Watch it here…

On Obama’s support for the Olympics coming to the US, it is all about economics and the bonanza that those jobs project would have brought. I do not think it was a slap in his face, I just think it was time for Rio to hold that grand party.
I admire the Obama family and Oprah for their fore site and efforts for the welfare of America.

When I heard about the speeches the Obamas made in Copenhagen regarding Chicago, I thought, how arrogant of them
to think that by talking about themselves the whole time— that would
sell the Olympic committe on Chicago!

I cry foul! George Will was very misleading this morning. He talked about Ronald Reagan and how he decrease the burden of government on the people, and then contrasted that with Obama trying to increase the burden of government.
The maximum tax bracket under Ronald Reagan was 38.5% in his last year as president. After 8 years, this man for small government cut it to that amount.
The maximum tax bracket under Obama is being proposed to be increased to 38.5%, the same as what Ronald Reagan had it.
I guess Ronald Reagan must have been in favor of big government too since the government has never been as big as it was under Ronald Reagan ever since Reagan left office.

As for the Olympics, thank God it didn’t come here. With our current tax rates, we can’t afford things like Olympics, conventions, celebrations, parks, and the like. It’s time that America balanced it’s budget, and if you want low taxes, it’s time that we start living within our means and do away with the government doing anything other than raising armies.

Is it so that the stimulus money has been distributed, the business community just won’t spend? Florida was oh-so-grateful before they got the money, now that they have it, the government is doing all the wrong things. Call them out!

Katrina van(something) obviously has a personal ideology to push. She stands out like a sore thumb on this panel. KvH sounds like she is reading from her old political science postgraduate dissertation. And most of the time I cannot even follow what she is saying until she slips into her agenda in her final comment when everyone is interrupting everyone else. She’s as intelligent as the next, but doesn’t seem to communicate very well for this show. David Gregory’s Meet the Press is better overall.

Katrina is stuck in the 70′s. Shes a nut.

i voted for obama.
but i’m sickened by his narcissism and that of his staff.
the olympics event was that on an international scale and a metaphor for the ego that he has become.
it’s sad and disgusting to see such self-love. his speeches, littered as they are with their “i”s and “me”s are disgusting to hear, despite his claims to the contrary.
i would hope that there is some change, but these fools are so thick with their own sense of grandiosity that they won’t listen.
i’m someone who is for healthcare reform, approves of the foreign policy strategy at large, is largely Democratic.
but I can’t stand the self-infatuation.
he went to the Olympics not for America, not even for Chicago, but so that in 2016 he’d have a huge victory bash as he bid goodbye to the world after his second term. it was all for him.
i can’t look at Obama the same way. it’s arrogant.

Katrina vanden Huevel’s comments detracts from an otherwise interesting discussion. Surely ABC can find a better spoken representative for the whatevers then her.
General McChrystal’s assignment is complicated and a tough situation. I would bet he understands his military responsibilities far better then anyone can understand Ms. vanden Huevel. Anyway, if she can have a job, there’s hope for everyone.

Posted by: D. Werth | October 4, 2009, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

I was surprised that when Vandenheuval said, with obvious relish, that the United States is no longer a super power that none of the other panel members commented as to what a nonsensical statement that is.

Posted by: jeffrey tew | October 4, 2009, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

Our president did the right thing by attempting to bring the Olympics here.
The benefit being thousands of jobs; our Chicago neighbors could use those jobs right now.
I find it disgusting for anyone to hate President Obama so much, that they are celebrating Chicago’s loss. The more we hate the worse our situation gets.
Let’s PLEASE have a little heart for our country in need.

Oh my god! Listining to the RT, one would think that the we are about to experience a military coup!
She should recommend to the Congressional leader to READ ARTICLE 2 as well. They are the ones who want to control the miliatry and the President. They did to Bush and they are doing it now to Obama.
Pelosi is not the commander in chief!

Hey guys, what about Chicago? Why not remove the president from the equation? Chicago needed us. I guess all we saw was President Obama…..and not our city in need…..wow.

Wow! Love all the vitriol directed at the President for attempting to bring the games here. Those of you bashing him know that EVERY OTHER HEAD OF STATE was there, right? Did you read their presentations? You might want to. Not only did Chicago lose, so did our country and I can understand why, Rio there has never been a game held in S. America. BUT remember all of you enjoying this moment, you don’t put country first. You put your petty hatred of our President ahead of what would have been good for our country, Chicago and Illinois. For those spouting off about “cronies” many Republicans lost and will lose money. Chicago’s plan was exceptional, people would have been put to work and it would have made a profit! Don’t forget many who come to the games also travel the country that hosts, so how much revenue did your areas lose? Remember, next time you call a Dem or liberal un American, the comments you made here. Speaks more to your patriotism!

Katrina vanden Huevel’s comments regarding civilian control of the military were completely inappropriate today. Her assertion that somehow General McChrystal’s opinion represents some sort of constitutional crisis is completely without foundation. Civilian control of the US military is such a powerful part of our military culture (of which I am part) that this scenario is inconceivable. Whether or not the administration is particularly happy with the General’s comments, if he were told that the President’s decision conflicts with his opinion, Gen McChrystal would snap to and say, “Yes, sir.” If you ask me, Ms. vanden Huevel owes General McChrystal an apology.

For those whose mantra is “it could have been worse” when talking about the economy; I ask you to take a month without pay and before your bills are paid, lock up your savings accounts and credit cards, and then maybe you might have an inkling of what many people who have been unemployed for well over a year are feeling. — Too bad that you won’t get to have the the experience of going out to apply week after month; reworking your resume for jobs you never thought you would apply for; and the self-doubts that can’t help but creep into your mind as you try to figure out how you could have screwed up so bad. — It won’t be for real, but hey it could give you a column or two that you’ll be paid for after your experiment.

Katrina vanden Huevel is the one regular on the “Roundtable” who is clearly out of her depth. Her positions and ideas are so predictable each time she is on. There have to be far more credible people who could take up the more extreme fringe of the left that she inhabits.

Posted by: Lew | October 4, 2009, 7:12 pm 7:12 pm

Katrina vanden Huevel is more intelligent than the rest of the Round Table gang put together.

Posted by: zStar | October 4, 2009, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

Katrina Vanden Heuvel greatly exaggerated whatever impact General McChrystal’s opinion had on our civilian government’s control/direction of our military. Also, she seemed to either miss or ignore the statement, about the “missiles/Predator” policy, that Vice-President Biden, and not the President, actively supported that policy. (Also, would the Taliban tolerate, let alone support, those “non-military alternatives”?)

I’m not surprised by the reaction to the olympics and Obama, I knew the minute he sign on to go support Chicago and America, the conservatives and republicans would critize. I agree w/ Katrina, Obama would have been blamed either way! and for Matthew Dowd, how can you expect change after eight months in office and you say Obama have to win something, he sounds worse than limbaugh and beck together, after eight years of policy you don`t expect things in afghanastan, the economy, middle east to get better overnight, lets give him his four years before you label him the worst president ever. Also I DO believe that much of the presidents backlash is because he`s half AFRICAN AMERICAN!

There are a host of reasons why Chicago wasn’t selected to host the 2016 Olympics, starting with the simple fact that the IOC is essentially a cartel within which the U.S. has disproportionately low representation/influence (the U.S. has only 2 of 108 delegates – as many as Morocco and less than the Netherlands, Switzerland, etc.; see 538′s recent report for a more detailed breakdown).
Furthermore, the U.S. has already hosted many times, while no South American nation ever has, so that was certainly due.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Olympic Committee alienated the IOC earlier this year when it announced plans to unilaterally launch an Olympic cable network, without consideration or consultation with the IOC (or its existing broadcast partners; over half of worldwide Olympic broadcast fees come from the U.S.).
But perhaps most glaringly, the U.S. was singled out by IOC members as offering international visitors “a harrowing experience” when traveling through U.S. Customs, perhaps the most unaccommodating in the world these days (see the NYT’s InTransit blog).
Finally, given a choice, where would you rather go – Chicago or Rio de Janeiro?
This is not rocket science.

George said:
“The President said his principal focus is going to be on jobs but White House officials said that doesn’t mean anything..”
George, you got that right.

I applaud President Obama for trying to get the olympics for the U.S. He realized it would bring jobs to Chicago and help the economy. What is wrong with that? It was a 1 in 4 chance and just because it went to Rio which was the favorite all along, does not make him a loser. What most people don’t realize is this is a different president and a young one and he has a lot of energy. He is not ignoring the war, he is still on top of it..he does not want to have to send more soldiers and is condering all plans. Most people who have worked with him, appreciate the fact that he listens to all sides which is so unlike what we had in the past. He will make his decision when everything is considered and I appreciate him taking the time to do this. We need not do as Bush…full steam ahead into war without much thought. Katrina Vander Huevel has it right…some are pushing for an outright war…Obama does not want this unless there is no other way. The reason we are seeing more aggressiveness on the part of the taliban is because we have killed many of their leaders in the past months and they are coming back to try to stop us. This, however, is not getting too much press. This president knows what he is doing…let’s give him the opportunity to decide. Whatever he decides, half the country will be unhappy. Some want war…some do not.I pray for him with this decision and we all should.

Suki: I think you need to re-focus your anger to the administration who caused this recession. Not this one. Obama stepped into the worst recession in history and it cannot be fixed in a few months. Many jobs, unfortunately, will not come back but President Obama has provided funds for those who want to learn a new career. He realizes that some will need to find a new way to earn a living. I feel your pain and hope that things turn out better for you soon but let’s not blame the wrong person. Greenspan says that he predicts our recovery to be 3% not the 2% as thought. That is a good sign. I know that it does not pay your bills but put your anger where it belongs on the administration which ignored the failing banks, the loss of jobs, the forclosures, the war, which started in Dec. 2007. If they had taken some steps…maybe you would still have a job.

I don’t care that the President pitched the Olympics I care that is cost the tax payers millions for him to do it. If Chicago thought it was important for him to go there they should have payed the cost. If they had the Olympics it would would have done nothing for the taxpayers in the other 49 states.

Posted by: Phil | October 5, 2009, 10:32 am 10:32 am

The “Ego” has landed, with a thud I might add.It seems as if the IOC could care less that the Obama’s sacrificed their time and energy to secure the Olympics for Chicago.ABC cares and will continue to help the Obama administration any way it can to divert the nations attention away from the real problem of rising unemployment, way to go George.

Would it be possible to either not have Katrina vanden Huevel on your show or to ask her to please NOT interrup others. She did so not only to you but to your other 3 guests. She doesn’t have any ideas, just keeps quoting and quoting and quoting and quoting. What a disaster she is.
Could you not find a guest who thinks before they talks, doesn’t yell, doesn’t interrupt others?

talmag,
Our country’s problems have been compounding for decades. Congress alone is responsible for the mess we are in. The waste and corruption needs to be cleaned up before any other huge program is enacted and goes broke.
Social Security is broke, Medicare and Medicade are broke, Tarp is a fiasco, the stimulus bills which were passed with little or no checks and balances or accountability, the cash for clunkers gave a break to mostly people who could afford a new car and took advantage of it and now, if we don’t need the money for food, we can soon buy a new refrigerator and on and on.
The Iraq war was not Pearl Harbor and Congress had plenty of time to do more research before approving it.
Everyone on Sunday’s roundtable except Katrina grasps reality.

Just one more example of how this guy “misread” yet another scenario!
He spends way too much time talking and no where enough time LISTENING! The Chicago bid proposal was not even close and the vote reflected that. Maybe after this lesson, he finally learn how to assess a situation correctly before opening his mouth.
