Trick-or-Treating at the White House

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: DC area children: get your costumes ready. On Saturday, the President and the First Lady will host a Halloween party at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for 2,000 lucky children from D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Specific schools were chosen by the White House and the Department of Education to be guests of the First family at their first Halloween bash. School children and their families will be able to trick-or-treat at the front door of the White House at the North Portico. The health-conscious First Lady will be providing healthy treats as well as some good old fashioned candy. In the evening there will be a Halloween reception for military families and children of White House and Residence Staff hosted by the President, First Lady, Vice President, and Dr. Biden. The President and the First Lady are not expected to come in costume, but it’s anyone’s guess what costumes first tweens Malia and Sasha will wear. “You need security clearance for that,” First Lady Michelle Obama joked about her daughters' “top secret” costumes.  -Sunlen Miller

I’m proud of you anti-Obama folks for not accusing the WH of attempting to entice children with candy in order to indoctrinate them with evil pagan rituals.

You didn’t really this wasn’t coming, did you? I mean, this would be for rational folks. In this case, I think you’re dealing with a frustrated bunch with a compilation of historical perspectives turning upside down.

That’s nice. I hope these kids are allowed in, unlike that field trip that was turned away a few months ago.
“Specific schools were chosen” – are these the terrible public schools whose teachers and administration are such an important part of the Democratic party, or the high-quality private schools where Obama and his staff send their own kids?

Posted by: bgates | October 30, 2009, 4:45 pm 4:45 pm

Guys are dying in Afghanistan because this idiot won’t send more troops. He signs a bill “behind closed doors”, to have us paying for killing babies overseas. Now he’s having a party for the kiddies. Is he dressing like the devil?

Sorry, but if I have to hear one more time about
healthy treats from Michelle Obama, I will get sick.
This idea is old, would somebody please circulate
some new ideas.

Ah well, the kids will have fun. They still have plenty of time to grow up and become disillusioned with their country…

My son’s school was chosen so I guess I will be going to the White House tomorrow night to trick or treat. The school is a public school but it is a very good one. I think I may dress like Sarah Palin this year….

Very thoughtful and an incredible demonstration of what it means to be stewarts of the people’s house…
Way to go!!! President and First Lady Obama…..The two of you are very kind and giving people. You are role models for the people of the world…
Just think how happy those little kids will be. And the impression that will have on them for life. Wonderful stuff.

“The President and the First Lady are not expected to come in costume…” The fact that BO is showing up as the President is costume enough. Hope it didn’t take them as long to decide on the treats as it did to make a decision on Afghanistan.

Hey, T, No I did not read the article. Anything I read about Obama nauseates me. I wonder if their kids friends from “Sidwell Friends”, the Obama girls, very expensive private school, will be there?! Same school Chelsea went to. The Bush girls went to a public school, GASP! Who is more for the common people? Guess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ann | October 30, 2009, 8:17 pm 8:17 pm

Obama could really spook the children by nationalizing their candy upon entrance to the White House. Heck, he seems to enjoy doing it to other industries so why not candy. Or he could scare the kids by telling them that they have to give him their allowance money to a private, for-profit corporation for dental insurance. Or he could really scare them and tell them a ghost story about how the Constitution used to mean something.

Ed – the Bush girls were in college when their dad was elected, they did not go to public school in Washington DC!

tierra,
You must have copied and pasted your comment about Bush and Cheney letting Afghanistan “simmer on the back burner”, as I’ve seen it several times now. Obama sending 17,000 troops to Afghanistan is not positive. It’s sending that many more American Military personnel to risk their lives for something that Mr. President wants. But who knows what that is…..

Yes Beth, the new standard line parroted by the right wing is that Obama is putting the troops in danger through indecision.
The truth is far different.
It was Bush and Cheney who let Afghanistan simmer on the back burner for 7 years while al Qaeda and the Taliban regrouped and the situation deteriorated.
It was the resulting regrowth of these two groups that now really threatens the troops. Had the situation been properly handled, this would not be so.

tierra – You MUST be a card-carrying Democrat…. I know, because you started your post with “Correction – Bush and Cheney…”
Look, the moron OWNS this war now, just as he OWNS Iraq. He and his Congress could have pulled us out on 1/21/2009… by refusing to spend another thin dime on anything but the cost of withdrawal.
So, stop with moronic defense “Bush and Cheney…” They’re GONE, Obama is now the resident Village Idiot.

Posted by: Fed_up_with_BOTH_Parties | October 31, 2009, 4:14 am 4:14 am

Whatever happened to that campaign promise that “The bucks stops here?”
I guess the Democrats just let THAT promise fade away… they knew he wasn’t serious when he said it.
So, this is all NOT our fault…. Bush and Cheney… Bush and Cheney… ad nauseam.
That sorry excuse isn’t going to work in 367 days… Democrat Judgment Day, 2 November 2010.

Posted by: Fed_up_with_BOTH_Parties | October 31, 2009, 5:01 am 5:01 am

Republicans are such a bitter bunch. I can’t believe how vitriolic they are against this president. He can’t even give a party for children without having those people spitting on him. What’s interesting is they spend all this time and energy in lambasting this wildly popular president when they SHOULD be getting their act together for the next election. Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal and Rush are their poster children…and they don’t realize what deep doo doo they are still in as a party. They are so angry at Obama. They should look in the mirror—they are the reason Obama won because their party is a disorganized mess. But they can’t even think straight because of their misplaced hatred. It’s kind of sad. I almost pity them.

Linda – You ranted “…this wildly popular president…”
LOL!
Maybe in YOUR house, but every poll tells a different story. This MORON wouldn’t win if the election were held today, and there wouldn’t be a Democrat majority in EITHER house of Congress.
But hey, go ahead and put another ice cube in the Kool-aid you’re drinking. REALITY will hit in 367 days – Democrat Judgment Day – and the day this MORON officially begins wearing his LAME DUCK sign around his neck in public.
Leadership… NOT!

Big surprise that this supposed “christian” president, who didn’t celebrate our national day of prayer, would celebrate the pagan festival of evil spirits and darkness at our White House. What a joke.

Posted by: s | October 31, 2009, 9:28 am 9:28 am

to “secondlook”: and who exactly would be running against him? I might even accept God as my savior if it’s Sarah and Bobby. Approval ratings mean nothing when contrasted with the foot-dragging of the GOP to get real legislation passed. You are a minority for a reason, accept it and learn from your mistakes before the next election.

What a bunch of HATE filled Right Wing Conservative Christians. Doesn’t anyone else recognize the contradiction of their opinions vs. their religion? I would be ashamed to have such vile feelings. How toxic. Perhaps you should pray about it.

What is wrong with you people. This is a simple Halloween party for the children of DC. I commend the Obamas for reaching out and sharing the White House. Everyone wants to make something out of nothing. Why don’t we stop thinking there is always some secret adgenda and start working together to solve our problems!!!!

I heard Obama is going to dress up like a President.

Those in the White House that have seen him wear his costume recently swear that it looks a LOT more like a Community Organizer than a President, so the kids shouldn’t be too frightened….

HallObamaween at the White House
Three children approached The White House during their long night of Trick-or-Treating.
Sally was dressed as a witch, Jenny was a princess, and Tommy was a soldier.
When the President actually answered the door, they could barely say those magic words:
“Trick-or-Treat!!”
When Sally stepped up with her treat bag…the President informed her that he was sorry but he could
not, in good conscience, contribute to her treat bag as “this might offend all Wickens” -
and, instead, he took her treat bag and motioned to the next child to approach.
When Jenny stepped up in her pretty, sparkly princess gown and tiara…the President
promptly took the bag from Jenny – because, after all, with her fancy dress and jeweled tiara,
“she was in no real need”.
Tommy marched up, saluted in character, but before he could even say “trick-or-treat”… the President
took his bag and matter-of-factly informed him, “Sorry, soldier … you’ll just have to wait”.
The three bags of treats in his hands, the President bid them a good night, and disappeared back into the
White House. Bewildered and dejected, the three trick-or-treaters were escorted safely off the grounds.
Once inside, the President took the three bags filled with goodies, and directed his “go-fer” to get the
Teleprompter ready and call the press – all FOUR networks… and meet at the nearest homeless shelter.
The singing and chanting began, the cameras rolled, the speech was recited
(left….right….pause…left…right…)
and in time for the late night news, the entire country heard from every main stream media source,
” These goodies?… Why, they came from OBAMA, of course!”
………”Mmm…mmm…mmm…!”

I see Cass Sunstein’s Theory of the Information Age is on the money yet again. A simple fun event for children gets turned into the focus of nutcase paranoid hysteria.
This is really entertaining, y’all. Keep bringing it on. We writers and scholars are having a hell of a time.

Haloween is coming up. My kids are very excited to go trick or treating. Right now the drug world is so crazy so I don’t even know if I want to take my kids trick or treating. I heard that people put meth that looks like candy inside of little packeges and give them out to kids. They look just like candy and kids don’t know any better so they eat it and they could die.
