“We’ll Make Sure (Critics) Get Some Good Seats”: Rahm Emanuel on the President’s Olympic Pitch

As President Obama prepares to leave for Copenhagen, Denmark, this evening, to make his pitch for Chicago to the International Olympic Committee for Chicago to host the 2016 games, we spoke with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel – also a favorite son of the Windy City — about the pitch.

Q: What is the pitch? Why Chicago over Rio and Madrid?

Emanuel: First of all, these are America’s games. There’s no better city in the United States or the world to host the international community than Chicago — because of the diversity.

You’re going to bring literally the whole world together for Olympic games, sports games, and competition.  Chicago’s a great competitive city—has always been that. It has a great amount of diversity and it would be great for Chicago also for not only its diversity but for the economic opportunity that it provides in the sense of jobs and economic growth. So Chicago is a perfect city to host the international community as the president will be making in his remarks tomorrow.

Q: How is that different from Rio and Madrid?

Emanuel: They’ll have their strengths to offer, nothing against them but Chicago is what none of the other cities have and this is again what I think the president’s remarks will be, not saying anything negative against them, but you’re bringing all the world together. You’re going to be hosting it. The world will feel comfortable given the diversity of Chicago all the different ethnic communities are there. And reaching out to the world to come to the United States, Chicago has that diversity and the capacity to hold these games in a way that nobody else does.

Q:  So your campaign and the President’s campaign is very positive. But there’s got to be some politics, some bad mouthing that goes on.

Emanuel: Well, that’s not going to be what the president participates (in). He’ll be selling all the strengths and capabilities of the city of Chicago and its people. And what the city has to offer. It will be an affirmative argument for the United States and the city of Chicago. Nothing against anybody else. Obviously we’ll accentuate where we think the strengths of voting for Chicago is an advantage.

Q: What will the President tell the members of the IOC to assuage any concerns they may have about holding the games in Chicago?

Emanuel: His main point is about the international community. It’s about why America is reaching out to the world. It’s about why Chicago has the capacity and why the United States has the desire to make these a world class world event in the city of Chicago, in the United States. That would be the main argument.

Q: Will the president be working as hard if it were another city?

Emanuel: Sure. Yeah, I mean obviously, you know, it goes without saying, this is where he was a United States Senator, where he was a state senator from. But his pitch is going to be this is about the United States.

It happens to be obviously you know an extra benefit in his home town and he has something individually personal. But if it was Atlanta…he would be out there as hard pitching it. These have become now, you know, President Lula from Brazil is going to be there.  Other leaders from other countries are going to be there. So to put our best foot forward, and to give us that competitive edge, the president wanted to travel, to make that pitch for the United States.

The Atlanta games were in the United States, Salt Lake City, America, obviously different cities host it, America is hosting it the world community. I think the benefit of having it in the city of Chicago, in a personal sense, but if it was another city he would be out advocating with the same energy and as much commitment in the same  way that world leaders are going to be advocating for the cities in their countries.  In many ways you put your country’s best foot forward, the city of Chicago.

Q: There was a debate within the White House about whether the president should go – he’ll spend more time in the air than on the ground. What tipped the scales?

Emanuel: Well, you know, he wants, other leaders around the world are going to make their pitch for the four remaining cities. We didn’t want to have Chicago or in this case not have that edge, not have that kind of level playing field with other countries.

We are doing all the work. You saw his comments today on Iran. He’s also been in the office making calls on health care. We had a meeting today with his economic team on the economy. The Vice President and I are staying behind working on other aspects and he will be working constantly, having been on the airplane, he’ll be working on a number of other topics beyond the Olympics.

Q: Do you have any response to Republicans criticizing the President for doing this instead of focusing on other issues, and this idea that this would help financially friends back in Chicago?

Emanuel: First of all, one is they work on a number of issues in their day. The president will work on a number of issues. Today he met with his economic team, on the economy, on a jobs agenda. Two: he has been on the phone working health care with individual Senators. Third, he made a statement on Iran with what was going on there. You know very well his day has multiple parts to it. … Now in all respect to them, I don’t remember them, I don’t remember them criticizing President Bush when he went to China to watch the games and cheer America on.

Here we’re going to go to Denmark to help secure the games for here in the us. It was not criticism them when George Bush went to China and he had a right to go do that. They shouldn’t try to make politics of this. I think they should take some pride in the US’s win, and you know we’ll make sure they get some good seats once Chicago does host the games.

Q What happens if he doesn’t succeed?

Emanuel: First of all that’s not how he views it.  If that was the case, then he probably wouldn’t have run for president, if all you do is just take a look at the odds. Other leaders are going to make the case for their city. We don’t want the US not to have a competitive, or be at a competitive disadvantage. It would be good for the city of Chicago – economically. It would be good for the US, for America to host the world here in the US with a great city, given Chicago’s diversity and economic capacity to host those games and make it a world class event.

Q: White House adviser Valerie Jarrett spoke with British Prime Minister Tony Blair last week – Blair made a successful pitch for London to the IOC – what advice did Blair give Jarrett?

Emanuel: Part of that is you know showing up and making the right sales pitch. I mean this has now become where you get a country or a city – get the events to the Olympics or the World Cup or etc.  — the leaders got to go make the pitch for their country and that was one of the critical decisions we had to make and the fact is that given that other world leaders are going and making the pitches for the other countries and the other cities we did not want the US and Chicago to be at a disadvantage.

he evaded answering your question about whether or not obamas friends were benefiting financially from the chicago olympics…might want to look into that.

Posted by: wow | October 1, 2009, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

we CAN NOT afford to host the Olympic Games.

Posted by: whatsgoingonhere? | October 1, 2009, 7:01 pm 7:01 pm

We all saw Obama’s admiration for Beijing and the infrastructure they built for the Olympics.
Of course, with all that stimulus money out there, Obama would love to do something similar for Chicago.

Posted by: MayBee | October 1, 2009, 7:15 pm 7:15 pm

Chicago will use its existing stadiums to host the Olympics. Yay Chicago! Go USA!

Posted by: Terry | October 1, 2009, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm

There is no way he’d be going if this was for any city other than Chicago. Every city that has hosted the Olympics has wound up losing money – Chicago will be no different. This is a waste of time and money. As for Rahm’s comparison to Bush attending the games -Bush wasn’t attempting to remake every facet of America within his first year in office. I hope I recognize my country by the time this lunatic is done.

Jake, is there usually this much hubris in the WH? Once can only wonder if the votes have received the Chicago ‘fix’ and why they seem to ignore the path of division and polarization they cause no matter what they touch?
From what I’ve read (Chicago Tribune) the city is split over the Olympics and there are valid concerns that the well documents cost over-runs associated with the Olympics will be born by the taxpayers – not to mention that HUD is being tapped to help pay for some of the expenses.

Posted by: SjB | October 1, 2009, 7:31 pm 7:31 pm

What I don’t get is Mrs. O’s pitch that “sports saves kids.” What Olympic athlete comes from a poverty background in the US? These sports require tons of $$ for private coaching, travel, etc. And what average or poor family will be able to afford the tickets to go?

I second your comment. It doesn’t make sense, unless it is yet another propaganda application of the ‘Big Lie” tactic.

something about this whole thing doesn’t feel right to me. chicago, chicago, chicago. does anybody work in the white house who is not from chicago? if we were talking about any other city, i would be proud to see obama lobby for the games. chicago? not so much.

Posted by: robin | October 1, 2009, 7:57 pm 7:57 pm

I CERTAINLY APPROVE OF OBAMA GOING TO EUROPE TO CHAMPION FOR CHICAGO….. AS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER – NOT AS PRESIDENT!!!! WE HAVE CRISIS ISSUES WITH OUR ECONOMY, IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN, AMONG OTHERS. EVERY DAY HE DELAYS MAKING A DECISION ON AFGHANISTAN, CONDITIONS BECOME WORSE ON THE FRONT. ONE VIDEO CONFERENCE CALL TO OUR COMMANDER THERE IN 100 DAYS!! WERE THE HELL ARE HIS PRIORITIES???? YEH, ALAN KEYS MAY BE A NUT JOB, BUT EVERYTHING HE PREDICTED SO FAR HAS COME TRUE!!!! OBAMA WILL WRECK THIS COUNTRY.

Not a huge fan of the Olympics but it does allow people of many nations to come together at one place on the planet for the pursuit of one kind of excellence.

Posted by: tierra | October 1, 2009, 8:17 pm 8:17 pm

I thought Barack Obama was President of the U.S.,not mayor of Chicago.Even his minions must know that this is not an appropriate use of his time-he has much more important things on his plate.George Bush never wasted time going to beg at the Olympics (as if that matters about anything). By the way, what is really the difference between the Bush Iraq-Afghanistan policy and the Obama Iraq-Afghanistan policy(besides a quantum leap of American deaths in Afghanistan)?I suspect that the president can’t decide what to do because he really does not know what he wants. The clarity of his campaign rhetoric seems completely at odds with the current reality-he just isn’t up to the job. This shouldn’t be suprising-Hillary predicted it and Mr. Clinton called the so-called history of Mr. Obama a fairy tale. If he is so smart, why isn’t he a Phi Beta Kappa?

Posted by: Nephron | October 1, 2009, 9:25 pm 9:25 pm

Millions will be put out, Obama and his buddies will get rich, the taxpayers will lose, the city will not make one red cent in profit just like so many other places that hosted this event.

Hey Rahm you guys will have the best
seats in the house after we
kick your butts to the curb in 2012!
Maybe you can watch with Obama’s
soulmate one-term Jimmy Carter!

Wow, there’s a bunch of jealous and bitter people on here.

Posted by: ron | October 2, 2009, 1:04 am 1:04 am

SBJ, you’re either a liar a just making things up while you hardly know what you’re talking about. L.A and Atlanta made a profit.

Posted by: ron | October 2, 2009, 1:13 am 1:13 am

Well Temagami, where would you rather see the games? New York tried for 2012 and failed. L.A, SF, Philly and Houston were competing against Chicago to represent the U.S for 2016 and failed. Chicago is it and maybe you’re from one of those cities that failed so you’re a little bitter but you must remember, we’re all Americans, lol.
Btw, Chicago is the perfect city with the perfect plan. plus it’s gorgeous so don’t be so bitter.

Posted by: ron | October 2, 2009, 1:18 am 1:18 am

I believe Mr.Obama will want everything to be fair in every city. We,as the citizen of our own country must be fair to everyone in any terms.

Posted by: tyre changers | October 2, 2009, 3:10 am 3:10 am

do you honestly think that Obama has not talked to his commander on the ground in Afganistan in 100 days? You do realize he has a minimum one hour national security meeting everyday 7 days a week. You dont think he would have spoken to his commander during this time? Come on, that defies all rational forms of logic in any way shape or form. My guess is you also believe the President is a secret muslim not born in the US.
Cant we all just have some pride and root for the Olympics to come to the greatest country on earth? Must we always resort to petty politics? I’m getting sick of al this.

“I don’t remember them criticizing President Bush when he went to China to watch the games and cheer America on.”
Unemployment wasn’t at 10% last summer. President Bush hadn’t supported a trillion dollar “stimulus” that is so far (and will continue to be) an abject and complete failure.
What’s Rahm’s cut if Chicago is selected?

Posted by: tjp612 | October 2, 2009, 8:37 am 8:37 am

Obama doesn’t have a problem spreading our money around–so why not let a country that has never had the Olympics get the bid?
I hope Rio gets it.
“Level the playing field” as the citizen of the world likes to say.

Posted by: larry | October 2, 2009, 8:42 am 8:42 am

“Barack Obama has decided to put his international influence on the line not to push for more support in Afghanistan or sanctions on Iran, but to act as Salesman in Chief for Chicago and its Olympics bid for 2016.”
BTW – As previously noted, according to Chicago Tribune poll almost HALF of Chicagoans DO NOT want games to come to Chicago. You can bet this is not the case in Rio.
C’mon, Rahm and Barry. Promote Rio – The U.S. has hosted games more than any country in the world – It’s better for everyone when “you spread the wealth around.”

Posted by: tjp612 | October 2, 2009, 8:42 am 8:42 am

Obama said Chicago will make the world proud.
The murder capitol of America, cesspool of political corruption.
What he wanted to say “I will make the world proud”.
It’s always about him.

Posted by: ollie | October 2, 2009, 8:58 am 8:58 am

Obama could care less about what the Olympics will mean to America.
It’s very simple why he wants it in Chicago:
Stuff the pockets of his pals/special interests.
His legacy.

Posted by: kyle | October 2, 2009, 9:00 am 9:00 am

The top commander in Afghanistan had to fly to Copenhagen just to get face time with Obama.
Obama has his priorities you know.

Posted by: millie | October 2, 2009, 9:02 am 9:02 am

Unemployment up to 9.8%
Obama better get the Olympics so he can start creating jobs in Chicago.
With our stimulus money.

Posted by: bailey | October 2, 2009, 9:04 am 9:04 am

Isn’t it nice, that Obama wants to spend so much money in Chicago, to host something of zero importance, while millions are out of work, and running out of hope.
Yes sir, that is the mark of a real fine President.

Posted by: Rick McDaniel | October 2, 2009, 10:05 am 10:05 am

Wow, these dems are something else, even Rahm is still putting Bush down…..sorry folks Bush is not in charge, unfortunately Bamy is, that’s why we’re in such a mess! Hurry 2010/2012!

Posted by: lyineyes1956 | October 2, 2009, 11:07 am 11:07 am

Elle, yes the “poor” do not have the money for training etc. Maybe Bamy will pay for trainer for them with a stimulus! LOL Oh, no that’s right, he cut the voucher programs for DC schools! But wait, I thought he wanted to help the poor? What a loser

Posted by: lyineyes1956 | October 2, 2009, 11:12 am 11:12 am

Awwwww
Michelle is going to be proud of America for the second time in her life.
But only if Chicago gets the nod.
No apologies for America this time from President Obama. That kind of talk wouldn’t work when you need the Olympics to add to your legacy.

Posted by: tyler | October 2, 2009, 11:20 am 11:20 am

How does Rahm already have tickets to give out? Is he going to be in charge of the Olympic games?? These guys are so arrogant, it’s sickening!

Chicago eliminated in the first round.

Go RIO!!!!

Just spreading the wealth.
Has Obama’s worldwide glow dimmed alittle?

Well that was a lot of traveling at tax payer expense for no reason. Thanks for your sacrafice Michelle. I am sure you still had fun partying in Copenhagen. Bo I don’t know what to say man. I guess that hope and change crap kinda took a down turn.

You can still get some good Olympic-sized seats at a bowling alley in Chicago with a large screen TV…
Now that would be “special”…. :-)

Ron, I think you hit the nail on the head. Jealousy is running out of control here. This country is in trouble but Obama didn’t put us here. And the Olympic games either in Chicago or any other city would be great for the US.

Sorry. I’m missing something. Who? The IOC? I’m sorry to say that I watched the pitch presentation and though I love Chicago, our pitch was hopelessly boring except for Michelle and Obama. They should’ve used them more, IMO. Seriously, it was dull– and just not that moving. I twittered on it a bit. Rio’s bid was passionate and– well, I hope they get it. I do think this turned out to be a colossal waste of time. I understand why the President went– clearly, he was still working on other things. But anyway… it was a disappointment. I admit it.

Posted by: Alyson | October 2, 2009, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm

Way to go Glenn! The lesson here is they need to get their collective priorities straight and this is not anywhere compared to the two wars, unemployment, economic failures and the cronies installed by this misguided administration.
