White House Calls Chicago’s Olympic Loss ‘Disappointing’

ABC News' David Wright and Sunlen Miller report:

White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod tells ABC News today the news that Chicago lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro is disappointing, yet the President feels good for having made the effort.

"Of course it’s disappointing. Chicago would have been a magnificent setting for the Olympics. President believed that strongly. It would have been good for the country to have it."

Axelrod said that there were four very strong bids, and there was a lot of intensive lobbying with many relationship in the room and in the end it just "didn’t work out for us."

Axelrod said that the politics of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were too great and the President’s delegation was just not enough to overcome "some of the other forces" in the room.

"I do know that Madrid’s bid was led by a former president of the IOC and I am sure that those relationships meant something in the room. At the end of the day, every one of those cities had a strong case to make and we always knew that it was a very competitive situation and it just didn’t work out."

Joking that he doesn’t pretend to understand the politics of the IOC, Axelrod suggested another strategy that may have been used, in knocking out Chicago first, as a strategic maneuver.

"Sometimes when you have multiple rounds and you have a country that’s a favorite, they try to knock out the strongest country early so that they don’t have to contend with them one on one."

Despite Chicago’s loss, Axelrod said the President’s trip to Copenhagen was still well worth it.

"All he lost was some sleep," Axelrod said about the President’s overnight flight on Thursday night.

Axelrod said that they were always planning on sending President Obama to the Olympics to fight for Chicago, despite the administration  – and the president himself – being coy for so long about their plans.

"The truth was we were always planning to go but we wanted to make sure if the heath bills were on the floor of the Senate or House this morning. So, we didn’t want to be in a position where we had to pull out at the end. But, it was always our plan to go because it wasn’t that big of a commitment of time."

On the criticism the President has received for going, instead of staying in the states to work on domestic issues, Axelrod said that in hindsight they still believe it was a good idea and something that makes him proud.

"The President would have been criticized if didn’t go, there will some who will criticize him for going. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. The fact is he had an opportunity to make the case for the United States of America as a host country, for the city of Chicago as a site for the Olympics and he was proud to do it and he made a great presentation."

Asked about how this looks for the President politically to come back to such a loss in America, Axelrod chalked this up as politics as usual.

"It doesn’t matter, look, in this town everyday people are scoring you one up or down and  if you become consumed with that then you just can’t get your work down. That’s for the score keepers as far as we’re concerned it was the right thing to do and now we move on to other things."

Axelrod said in the end this is just one thing, and there’s much bigger issues to tackle.

"He’s back in the saddle and dealing with that," Axelrod said.

Must be very disappointing especially to Michelle.
She and her husband sacrificed so much by going to Copenhagen.
The taxpayers only gave millions of their hard earned money.
They are so out of touch with those outside of their elite bubble.

Drudge had the best headline:
“The Ego Has Landed”
Obama’s opening remark to the IOC had the word “I” four times. Four times Obama said “I” in just one sentence.
I’m hopeful the whole world is waking up.

Like other failures of Obama, this one will be ignored by the press.
However, if Chicago had gotten the Olympics just imagine the press going totally Obama crazy with:
Headlines:
“Obamalympics 2016!”
“Obama Brings Home the Gold!”
Michelle`s basketball coach brother would have been selected as head coach for the US Olympic basketball team.
In 7 years at least one of the two Obama daughters would be on an Olympic team.
There would have been a ticker tape parade through Chicago with Obama riding in the Obamamobile as the One who blessed America with the 2016 Olympic games.
We would have watched report after report about how the entire world loves Obama so much that they gave him the Olympics. The US was not awarded the Olympics, Obama was awarded the Olympics.
T-shirts and souvenirs with the “Chicago Obamalympics 2016″ sold by the bazillions.
His 2012 Presdential campaign would have had the sub-theme of he brought us the Olympics in 2016, vote for Obama again so the President can be there at his “Obamalympics”.
A new Olympic sport would be added in 2016 – “Best Toned Upper Arms”, and Michelle would get the gold medal. Whining to the reporters, Michelle would tell us all, “I sacrificed so much so America could have the gold.”
We should be so happy that Rio got the Olympics.

Then he should be glad RIO won.

The tone of glee in the voices of those throughout the blogosphere contending that “[t]his brings more doubts about Obamas [sic] presidency and his standing in the world” is distressing to say the least.
Is there NO issue on which we all can simply agree as Americans, and not immediately try to spin for petty, partisan attack? Good God, kids, what kind of a society have we become when a decision like this is greeted with ANY thought other than “Wow, that’s a shame – but at least our President gave it a shot. We’ll get it next time.”
You know, like AMERICANS first – and spoiled political sore-losers second.
To declare ad hominem war on our current President over a decision by the IOC is to declare that there simply is NO common ground left on which we can share a unified thought as a people, be it elation OR disappointment. How pathetically sad.
We are truly a house divided. Thanks naysayers. Thanks obstructionists. Thanks to all who continue to demonstrate to the world that we’ve become a culture of petty bullies who’ll waste no opportunity to separate us further.
Is it any wonder that the U.S. would be passed over for an event which symbolizes unity and brotherhood?

Maybe the Olympic Committee this into consideration. That poor child died in a supposedly safe place – outside a Chicago school – while obama was busy making phone calls on behalf of Chicago. Did obama even say a word about how unfortunate and awful this was? No. It was all about the chicago olympics for the past 2 weeks. Not even a thought of the soldiers dying in Afghanistan for the past 2 weeks. And the General had to come to him in Copenhagen – he didn’t go to Afghanistan.

As for the violence in Chicago’s schools, and the alleged “silence” on the matter:
“White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. and Education Secretary Arne Duncan would meet Wednesday with school officials, students and residents and talk about school violence.
“Obviously, [the incident] is of great concern to the president, as somebody who lives in Chicago,” Gibbs said. “But [it] would and should be a concern for every American.”
Gibbs has indicated that the administration was preparing an initiative to address the national issues of youth crime and gang violence.”

Nice post. I’ve seen a couple repeats here of Eric Erickson’s “World Rejects Barack Obama: Hahahahaha. I thought the world would love us more now that Bush was gone. I thought if we whored ourselves out to our enemies, great things would happen. Apparently not. ” Classy. Malkin, the Weekly Standard and Fox News all are showing how anti-American, vitriolic, over the top, divisive and petty they really are- though the Weekly Standard tried to hide their cravenness by deleting references to the cheering in their office. Eyeroll. Doubt in the end it will do much for the GOP brand, which remains in the toilet.

I ask you the same question: Did you ever raise your voice to state similar concerns 1/20/01 – 1/19/09 when the Left was waist deep in their vitriol and hate for Bush? Replace Malkin with Olbermann, Weekly Standard with HuffPo, and Fox News with MSNBC and you would have a pretty good description of the past 8 years.
“Doubt in the end it will do much for the GOP brand, which remains in the toilet.”
Obama, Pelosi, et. al have done the damage:
From Gallup 9/30/09
PRINCETON, NJ — In the third quarter of this year, 48% of Americans identified politically as Democrats or said they were independent but leaned to the Democratic Party. At the same time, 42% identified as Republicans or as independents who leaned Republican. That SIX-POINT SPREAD in leaned party affiliation is the SMALLEST Gallup has measured since 2005.
Since BARACK OBAMA took office as president in January, the DEMOCRATIC ADVANTAGE in leaned party identification HAS SHRUNK EACH QUARTER, from 13 points in the first quarter (52% to 39%) to 9 points in the second quarter (49% to 40%) and 6 points in the most recent quarter (48% to 42%).

Moore invested in Halliburton.
Moore moved his post production company to Canada to avoid paying tazes.
Moore used non-union stagehands to save himself money.
And you lefties worship this guy. Exactly what is wrong with you??

“I’m assuming, tjp, that you’re referring to the ALLEGED pettiness and incivility of the Left for their criticisms of Mr. Bush”
Alleged? Have you been in a coma for the past 8 years? Do you also deny the Holocaust?
“But the truth is that those excesses on the Left were few and far between.”
Are you familiar with the work of Olbermann, Mathews, Schultz, Maher, M. Moore, etc., etc., etc.? You cannot, in all good conscience, believe what you are saying. Ridiculous.
mmm mmm mmm
- – - – - – -
Thank you, tjp, for proving my point about “false equivalency” with your response.
You speak of “good conscience” – yet, without considering for a moment whether I might be Jewish (I am), equate my justifiable criticism of the Right’s ad hominem attacks with Holocaust denial?! Talk about demonstrating restraint and civility.
And no, I wasn’t “in a coma” during the reign of Mr. Bush – though I wish I had been. The previous President was criticized for (among other things) launching an unprecedented attack on a sovereign nation that posed no immediate threat to us, and had NO involvement in 9/11; knowingly fabricating or misrepresenting the evidence in order to start that war; assaulting the Constitution to enable domestic spying, suspension of habeus corpus, and extraordinary rendition; supporting torture as official U.S. policy; fumbling the Katrina rescue and reconstruction effort; bankrupting the American economy; conflating church and state through federal faith-based programs and judicial appointments; and contributing, by means of his incompetence in office, to the deaths of over 4,500 men and women in uniform and tens-of-thousands of foreign civilians.
Mr. Obama, who wants to provide health-care coverage for all Americans, is labeled a liar, Fascist/Socialist/Communist, and likened to Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot.
The situations cannot even be compared. Who’s in a coma now?

Rio wanted it more. Chicago, The City That Worked, no longer works. Minor issues … like a $500 million deficit next year … a demoralized majority in the city sick of the weekly murders of kids, outrageous taxes, voracious parking meter and rates … a hostile city administration to quality of city life issues … and corruption from one end of the city to the other.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!! The days of BSing the world are over. America is no longer able to impose an elitist attitude and get its way.
Maybe now (I doubt it) Barry will address ChangeWeCanBelieveIn starting with what the idiots in Congress are fraudulently calling ‘healthcare reform’. They should label it THE HEALTHCARE INSURANCE AND DRUG INDUSTRIES’ PROFIT PROLIFERATION ACT. At least the name of it would be more fitting.

Still, I’m glad Obama tried. And, I guess I just don’t understand why people would get so excited. I mean, Rio seems like a great city, and it would be good for them.

Anyone who cares, do go and actually read FULL speeches from Obama, not just out of context quotes. For example, a bit more from the same speech drjohn is trying to deceive you about:
“But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what’s bad.
On both sides of the Atlantic, these attitudes have become all too common. They are not wise. They do not represent the truth. They threaten to widen the divide across the Atlantic and leave us both more isolated. They fail to acknowledge the fundamental truth that America cannot confront the challenges of this century alone, but that Europe cannot confront them without America.” -Obama, April 3rd, France
Some apology tour. I suppose Republicans would prefer the President dismissively insults as “Old Europe” our allies who are contributing about 35,000 troops to the effort in Afghanistan.

- – - – -
Again, a false argument. Are these the only 3 examples you could find? The point here, I thought, was whether or not these excesses by the Left were celebrated or criticized by the Left (they were, especially the inexcusable tee-shirt). This still is worlds different from the current political climate, in which things like the recent Facebook poll on whether Mr. Obama should be murdered are not roundly and immediately condemned by the Right.
You ask if we’ve “yet” seen any examples like the ones you cite, and the answer is no – NOR had we seen those examples during the first 8 months of Mr. Bush’s term. Those examples were created in 2004, 2006, and 2005, respectively.
And yet, from the HOUR he took the oath of office, Mr. Obama has been subjected to daily attacks on his citizenship, patriotism, and fitness for office. Examples? Pull up ANY of Hannity or Malkin or Coulter or Limbaugh’s transcripts. As I already mentioned, a Facebook poll pondering the idea of assassination. The repeated brandishing of weapons and implications of violence at Presidential speaking engagements.
And if you think that THAT would have been tolerated during the reign of George the Younger, well, there’s nothing more I can say to you.
This meme of the “vitriol, hate, and incivility of the Left during Bush’s presidency” is a fabricated talking point, and simply not supported by some overwhelming treasure trove of documented evidence.

Who on the left has a body count to equal Timothy McVeigh (who was famously arrested wearing a shirt with the quote, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”)? Or Eric Rudolph? Or Jim Adkisson (who in what he thought was his suicide note wrote, “The future looks bleak. I’m absolutely fed up! Now for your false equivalency argument to carry ANY credibility, please cite left wing fanatics from the modern era (like the ones above – and just to be fair I left out the racist murderers) with anything like a similar body count. Quit lying. At this point in his term Bush had the highest popularity ratings of any modern president and the US Congress united behind him. At the start of his term, the Democrats in Congress allowed him both his signature Bush Tax Cuts and No Child Left Behind Act. This is documented reality.
Bush earned his unpopularity. Obama is the target of irrational hatred, belittled even for the successful rescue of an American citizen from pirates. There really is nothing that the Right is willing to rally behind the President about.
The Right – and you – are lying when you suggest Bush was the target of the same type of hatred as Obama. Indeed, there is no record of Bush – or any President, EVER – being shouted at when he held the floor as the Executive during a joint a session of Congress.

So now the White House is going to go with the “right-wing conspiracy” theory against the IOC, too???? Can they not just admit that Chicago sucks with it’s high crime rate, corrupt politicians, racism, pollution…and since I come from there, I can rightly say that half the city is a ghetto. The IOC got it right in spite of the Obama/Oprah caravan blowing into town. This is another instance when Obama needs to let it go and shut the hell up before he has to have another “beer in the garden” moment…this time with the President of the IOC!

You are 100% right. Too many right wingers– and it’s NOT just the nuts or the fringe anymore– have let their sour grapes turn into sour w(h)ine and, from what I can tell, they are reckless, bellicose w(h)inos who lie pathologically. And they seem to think that’s cool. They don’t care if they tear the country apart– heck, John L. Perry called for a military coup in Newsmax the other day, yes? He wrote: “Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible. Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.” ”
Sure, Newsmax eventually scrubbed the story, but does anyone doubt that we’ll see “military coup” signs at the next tea party-neocon gathering?
I can’t imagine what kind of line up their going to be trying to vote into elected office. It’s baffling.
As for “hatred” for Bush, I certainly never hated him. I agree with Jim Bob: “I wouldn’t call it hatred. More like dis-belief that a US President could be such an idiot.”

Nice try to Chicago & their supporters. I guess we got our hopes up and acted a little arrogant, but maybe we can get 2020. We need to accept the IOC decision with grace and humility. Peace!

Quit lying. At this point in his term Bush had the highest popularity ratings of any modern president and the US Congress united behind him. ****
Thats because of a little thing we call 9/11 it wasn’t because he was good at anything. The country was behind the country and any president would have also had high rating then.
so don’t get too high and mighty because Bush Blew it all with his stupidity in the years that followed.
If it wasn’t for 9/11 and republican scare tactics he would have been gone after one term.

I take it you’ve never been to Rio. According to my bff, it’s beautiful and the music and dancing is fun and festive, but the shanty towns have been taken over by armed and dangerous drug lords. Businesses have moved out in waves to safer places where business is possible, and there is A LOT of corruption.
Crime rate and ghettos really couldn’t have had anything to do with the final decision.
Chicago isn’t perfect by a long shot when it comes to crime, violence and corruption, but it’s a lie to say half of it is a ghetto. The lakefront is beautiful and many of the people here are amazing. If you haven’t been here during the past 20 years or so, jules, you’ve been missing out.
The real truth is that our pitch was kinda boring, and didn’t really allay fears about the world coming to America or speak deeply to legacy in the way they seemed to want. Michelle and the President spoke movingly, but the rest was a big yawn.
I’m disappointed, but, on the other hand, it would’ve been a hassle to have it here. Life goes on…

This little trip back and forth across the Atlantic cost the American taxpayer over a million dollars, what great fiscal responsibility. I want my govt accountable on all levels, if I have to count my pennies and watch my spending my govt should have to as well. Why in the hell was this trip done, as if Oprah and Mrs. O weren’t enough.
Im sickened by the big spending the past two administrations have done, what this country really needs is a viable third party so the American people can punish both Reps and Dems at the same time. Let them know we mean business, let them know they work for us, let them know we’ve had enough!!!

Obama’s speech was awful and lacked any substance. It sounded like it was written by a dreamy high schooler. The olympics are not about him and his father and his growing up nor about Michelle’s father and how proud he would be if the olympics were in Chicago. sheesh.. This was not about them. They should have used the opportunity to market the US. But wait, Obama has been so busy apologizing to the world about the US, so why would anybody want to come here anyway? It was a big failure and horrible waste of taxpayer dollars for him to go to Denmark. The only good thing I can think about this trip is that he met with McChrystal.

Now, let’s see. Did anyone blame George W. Bush for New York’s failed bid for 2012? Did anyone scream that he’d taken us into a war that was extremely unpopular abroad and that, therefore, the U.S. had gotten its just deserts at the IOC voting?
Funny. I don’t recall hearing that. No one seemed to be paying attention.
I’m a Chicagoan who is quite glad that our city didn’t win, because I didn’t want it to do so. However, I must point out that while Rio may well stage a terrific Olympics — and I hope it does, because I love the Olympics — the crime and corruption there make Chicago look like a model of safety and probity.
BO Stinks, you are poorly informed. Chicago’s level of corruption is no greater than that of other large American cities, and its overall crime rates are actually lower than those of several others.

By the way, this short trip to try to get jobs for Chicago (oh, well) came with the main point of his trip, an important meeting with General McChrystal who is heading the efforts in Afghanistan. The nightly news spent 10 minutes on the Olympics story and only 30 seconds with a still shot on the real import of the trip. How sad. In case you lost count, Bush spent a full 3 years, yes 3 years of his 8 years in office on vacation and out of sight. At least Obama does important work when he takes a few hours to try to pitch for the U.S.
I respect him more every day. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders, and his own countrymen are trying to take him down. God bless and help this President to succeed–said from a TRUE Christian and TRUE patriot who realizes that united we stand, divided we fall!

Unbelievable how many “Americans” are against their president. Unbeleivable. Most of these posters are clueless to the politics of the IOC (including the recent removal of baseball and softball from the Olympics line-up). All these “patriotic” posters likely voted for Obama because they were worried that the world might call them racist if they did not. Now that he is in office and time has past, they feel justified in professing their desperate need for his failure, even if that would mean negative consequences for them and their children.
Nothing Obama has done or is doing represents failure, except to these posters who need to justify their desire for their president to fail.
As I always say, give Obama a Bernie Madoff mask and he will garner a lot more support from Americans.

Posted by: Chuck | October 2, 2009, 8:27 pm 8:27 pm

Let’s examine some of the other forces involved.
Maybe we need to go back into history to see a few reasons for this decision.
The Olympic games in 1996 were marred by a bombing. The bomber, Eric Robert Rudolph bombed the Olympics because the Olympics were created to “celebrate the ideals of global socialism.” He wanted to “ager and embarrass the Washington government”and “to force the cancellation of the games or at least create a state of insecurity to empty the streets around the venues and thereby eat into the vast amounts of money invested.”(The quotes are from a statement Rudolph made in 2005 after he was captured. I found them on Wikipedia.) He was a fugitive for five years finding asylum in the southern Appalachian Mounts where apparently a lot of the local residents regarded him as a hero.
Let’s fast forward to the summer of 2009 where the right wing crazies put their racism, hatred, xenophobia, and ignorance in full display for the whole world to watch. . From listening to Lou Dobbs, I got the impression that in many communities you could be lynched for speaking Spanish. God help you if you spoke French or Arabic.
Observe how many politicians demonized Europe and its “socialist” medicine, apparently unaware that many European countries, like Germany, are in fact governed by socialists, and also unaware that our infant mortality rate is twice as high as “socialist” countries like Sweden or France.
Note the number of times gun-toters showed up at presidential rallies with loaded weapons. And, according to the latest issue of Intelligence Report published by the Southern Leadership Conference, right=wing militias are on the rise.
And what are foreigners supposed to make of Sarah Palin’s new book, Going Rogue? Does Sarah Palin mean that she wants the US to join ranks with rogue nations like North Korea and Iran. And what about the NRA? Will they insist on bringing weapons into the Olympic Games?
Let’s fast forward to 2016. If Obama is still president, might right wing militia groups or crazy terrorists try to launch terrorist attack at the Olympics for the same reasons that Eric Robert Rudolph set of a bomb in1996? And if the GOP is in power, won’t Rodolph’s attitudes toward the Olympics be a major cornerstone of US public policy?
With this information in mind, were you on the IOC, would you entrust the Olympics to a place like the United States? Or you consider Afghanistan or Somalia?
Brazil has plenty of problems, but under the leadership of President Lula, Brazil is making progress in solving these problems.
And unlike the United States, where white-is-right is getting a new lease on life, the people of Brazil actually look like much of the rest of the world.
Those are the reasons Rio won. It’s no great loss to Chicago any way, since most people of Chicago didn’t want the games. And as far a “set back” for Obama, on the way home from Copenhagen he was having a conference with General Stanley McCrystal about Afghanistan and diplomats seem to be making progress with talks with Iran.
I am glad Obama is not sweating the small stuff. Neither should we.

A local poll in my area showed some 80% didn’t want the Olympics in Chicago. One poll in Chicago showed about 50/50. Rio was a good choice.
My guess was that estimates were bad and we would have had to bail Chicago out after the games.

Posted by: Ed Taylor | October 2, 2009, 8:42 pm 8:42 pm

Obama put the prestige of the Presidency of the United States on the line…it was completely ridiculous. he thought it was a sure thing and that it would make him look like he is loved by the rest of the world. Instead the IOC went out of their way to send him a message and it wasn’t love or even respect. People are tired of his teleprompter speeches – and tired of him in general. What about Iran? North Korea? these countries are becoming nuclear powers right in front of our eyes and our President has no game plan, no foreign policy. He is WAY over his head.

Posted by: Paul | October 2, 2009, 8:45 pm 8:45 pm

For the Republicans to rejoice that Chicago lost is rather amusing. This is comedy hour in politics. However, although it is not nice to laugh at the failure, Obama certainly humbled himself in going which in the long run may be an Ace. I think it would have been worst if he hadn’t gone when requested because then the failure would be truly blamed on him by Chicago and he would definitely loose the support of the home state. I think Obama is relieved probably US didn’t win because more criticism would result for excessive spending!

JHW, I may rarely agree with you politically but I respect your ability to argue your point of view. But sometimes you come up with a whopper that simply must be refuted, as when you wrote here, “The Right – and you – are lying when you suggest Bush was the target of the same type of hatred as Obama.”
I understand your argument that Bush “earned” his unpopularity. I agree that at this point in his administration, Bush was not the subject of the sort of criticism that Obama has been. However, I would argue that in large part, that is because Bush had not YET proposed anything so controversial and divisive as Obama has proposed already, not because some monolithic Right blindly hates the current occupant of the Oval Office.
NCLB was hardly a sharply partisan piece of legislation, as you well know. in fact, it drew plenty of criticism from the right, as I recall. It was cosponsored by Ted Kennedy. Yes, I will concede that some Democrats also helped pass the Bush tax cuts, but then, when is the last time a politician got into deep political trouble letting constituents keep more of their own money? And there was plenty of opposition, IIRC. Gephardt called the proposal “deeply irresponsible,” for example.
In addition, the notion that Bush did not get knocked around by some Democrats from the day he was sworn in (and even before) is simply not true. Many Democrats did not consider him the legitimately elected president and said as much quite publicly. Thirteen members of the House objected to the certification of the election results, in fact. And one of those, Corrine Brown of Fla., speaking at a rally on Inauguration Day, said, “”What happened in Florida will go down in history as a coup d’etat.”
But you are right, the real vitriol against Bush grew exponentially after the start of the Iraq War. I have never seen such intense hatred of a president as I witnessed with my own eyes and ears (and I remember the Nixon years!). It made the foaming at the mouth attacks on Bill Clinton (which were equally shameful and unnecessary, btw) seem down-right polite. The divisiveness in American politics that has grown steadily worse over the past few decades is truly a shame.
Still, I would argue that Obama has drawn such strong opposition so much earlier than the other presidents, particularly Bush, because he has proposed more controversial measures and has proven to be less willing to try to find middle ground (and sometimes because there really is no possible middle ground) than I would argue Bush did early in his first term. (Am I arguing that Bush continued to be as enthusiastic about seeking bipartisan support throughout his whole 8 years? Nope. But we were talking about his first nine months in office, remember?)
The stimulus package and Obama’s approach to the financial meltdown were bound to inspire strong reactions both pro and con. Health care? A very hot topic. Throw in cap-and-trade, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and well, there are a lot of hot button issues to inspire honest opposition to the president’s policies.
So I do not think that Obama is being attacked simply for the sake of being attacked. I think there are reasons why he has inspired such strong responses so early on, and that for the vast majority of his critics, those reasons are completely legitimate. (and no, racism and birtherism are NOT legitimate)

Did someone just say no to Obama? Oh, that wasn’t in THIS country, was it? Why was Chicago even considered in the first place? New York not good enough? Or Miami? Or LA again? Or Seattle? Or San Francisco? Or Denver? Or Phoenix? Or Dallas? Or Houston? New Orleans could have used it. Why Chicago? Take a guess! Chicago is not the best city in this country to showcase to the rest of the world. And it looks like the IOC agrees with that. I do, too. Michelle’s dad had MS – how does that relate to the Olympics? A bit of a stretch. You know, the shallowness of the Obamas is easily seen outside of this country. But if you express that opinion here, you are labeled a racist.

We need to push this one under the rug and move on. it’s like being broke and getting out of spending a dime— but having put forth the greatest show of good will by sending a President. The White house had wind they would lose before hand and this was a well crafted political ploy to keep Chicago happy.
That laughing by the Republicans in the media showed they are so prejudiced against this President that like mad men they have forgotten a sense of patriotism and displayed anti-American sentiments by rejoicing with America’s enemies at Chicago’s lost. That will cost the Republicans in 2010 much more than any cost to Mr. Obama. He has proven his patriotism even if to the extreme!!

Mikeyh0, people are not stupid, and should be given more credit for knowing the difference between disagreeing with a president’s action and wanting him to fail. Many of these posts make posters appear to be “rejoicing” at any hint of the latter. Some people who claim to be patriotic Americans are clearly hoping and praying for President Obama to “fail”. Rather unfortunate for all Americans.

Obama did what he had to do. Stand for his country while the GOP traitors keep talking.
But obama forgot that not everybody in the world like him. I knew that it was a lost battle even before. Even if some of the comity members from europe voted for Chicago the Asian and latin america members will never vote for him. Many of people from these two areas are just moving with the cloud not be seen as against the Obama movement.

moderate | Oct 2, 2009 9:12:55 PM: That was an extremely long rerun on history that I don’t think capture the true problem with the vitriol that has been exhibited by the FAR-right extremists that have stolen a once proud and honest Republican party. It is these extremists and unreasonable voices that have been given far too much voice over the true voice of reason and over real Replublicans. There is no doubt and every reason to believe that the voices of Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, Beck and many others have created incredible negativity towards all things non-Republican or non-conservative. This has not been your normal criticism nor have they used normal arguments but very destructive ones. Wishing that Obama fails is but a small example of such destructiveness. Their arguments have been fully intended to cause as much damage as possible with very little concern to the full impact of the damage to the fabric of America’s Democratic processes. Much of the criticism of these destructive voices has been created in reaction to these destructive voices. Liberals have not been without its extremist voices but they have been NO WHERE NEARLY as damaging as the extremist right wing. So, no, my Moderate friend, your argument does not hold water. You have failed to take into account the personality differences in these extremists and what degree they will go to win at all costs. So, I put forth my original forecast, the Republican Party is losing its trust to most Americans and is “imploding” with it’s own self-destruction because it has lost control of the destructive voices that have taken full control of the party.

I am sorry for Chicago, although I’m american I am happy Brazil won, at this moment they’re showing their economic power, they were the last to get into the economic crisis and were the first to drop out! So we americans, europeans, etc can see now that Brazil is a monster asleep which is getting awake! They will host world cup and 2 years later the olympic games, I’ve been in Brazil and I could see how much rich is that country, how much patriot is that people, like chinese people, and how it is going to be the 4th/5th global economy. Unfortunately the USA is losing influence for that countries where before WE called third world, but now they have the most stable economy in the world. So if you haven’t been there, you can’t say what you don’t know!

The only reason Chicago should have gotten the Olympics is if they added a few new events. Event 1: Take the Money and Run. Event 2: Four-on-One Dodge the bat. Event 3: Outrun thy neighbors gun. Apparently Rio has planned on integrating some of these events into their festivities.

I am not from Chicago, but it is a great city. Yes it could have been a target for a terrorist attack, yes it could have been a potential point of economic growth or decline…who can really predict exactly what would have happened in 2016. The President represented our country just like I would expect any president of the United States of America to do. Not going could have been a target for criticism and if one argues it takes away from a domestic agenda then they really don’t understand technology and the world that is instantly available especially at the presidents fingertips. There is most likely is no more corruption in the IOC then there is in any other form of politics.
Personally, I just wish that regardless of political affiliation the US could just come together. The problems we face are agreed upon while the solutions are not. Be civil people; it only strengthens ones argument and makes it more likely for someone to actually listen to your point of view even if it is on one of the extremes. Lets work together to get something done…not put up road blocks so that we have eight years of the same old.
Presidents help the country through times which are always changing; let’s support him in whatever way we feel comfortable and not throw stones. We can all work to do better. I remember when running a smear campaign was a no no and a last resort. Why not go back to that respect?
Has anyone ever thought that other countries respect those who truly respect their leaders? Look at Iran and North Korea to mention a few. Especially within this great country there is no need to create war.
Every little decision is not the end of the world. Let’s focus on the life and death issues.

The president of Brazil made the case, the olympics have been held 30 times in Europe, 5 times in Asia, 2 times in Australia and 12 times in United States. I strongly believe in what he said , everybody and every continent have the opportunity to have and host this games , it’s no only Europe or USA, that going to win all the time. they are no the only people in this planet. wake up people!
THE OLYMPICS BELONGS TO EVERYBODY!

Posted by: ellen | October 2, 2009, 11:18 pm 11:18 pm

It is truly unfortunate that Chicago was not chosen to host the 2016 Olympics. Not only would this have been a great (and apparently the only) triumph in Obama’s first year as president, it would have provided the opportunity to add some new Olympic events to reflect the unique character and culture of the famous Windy City.
Ballot Box Stuffing: although this sport is played in almost every country in the world, Chicago will have an overwhelming advantage. Their team, made up of veteran ACORN members and coached by Mayor Richard Daley himself, would have been a heavy favorite to sweep the medals despite an expected strong challenge from Zimbabwe.
Bribe Handling: in this new event each competing team will attempt to clandestinely pass large stacks of currency back and forth amongst themselves without getting caught by the judges (aka, the feds). Again the home team will enjoy a huge advantage with none other than Coach Blagoyevich heading up a strong team composed of the most crooked politicians in the state of Illinois. With so much talent available, Coach Blago’s biggest challenge will be choosing his starting lineup.
Some traditional Olympic sports would have to be modified in order to appeal to the hometown audience.
Fencing: it will have be explained that this involves swordsmanship. Most people in Chicago think that fencing means disposing of stolen merchandise at a good profit.
Small Bore Pistol: to fit in with the local culture, all competitors in this sport will be required to shoot with their their pistols turned sideways while using their other hand to hold up a pair of baggy pants and yelling “Yo’ Mama” after every shot. There will also be a new Drive By event with extra points for hitting innocent bystanders.
Track and Field: hurdles will be replaced with subway turnstiles in all applicable events. In the revised shot put competitors will attempt to throw a brick through a store window at fifty feet, after which they have thirty seconds to scoop up as much merchandise as possible. Also while competing in track events, each runner will be required to carry a stolen television set throughout the race.
Wrestling: each ‘wrestler’ will run up behind an elderly woman and attempt to wrestle her purse away from her. Since he will then have to sprint 100 meters with the stolen purse this will also count as a track event.
Cycling: the main change will be at the beginning of the race. Each rider will first have to cut through the security chain in order to steal another competitor’s bike and then ride it for the rest of the race. Also cyclists will get extra points if, during the race, they manage to swipe wristwatches or jewelry from spectators as they ride by.
Field Hockey: instead of hockey sticks the teams (gangs) will be equipped (armed) with clubs and iron pipes. No ball will be necessary, since the players will be primarily interested in beating in the heads of the opposing team members. Spectators (aka, innocent bystanders) are advised to stay at least 30 meters away from the field while the game is in progress.
Now isn’t it a shame that all those foreign visitors will not have the opportunity to enjoy a true Chicago Experience they can tell their friends about back home?

I am proud of the IOC. They made the right choice. The audacity of Amercian people to think that all should gravle at once the most powerful country in the world. we brought down a global economy, was not a ten beten to death in the streets of chicago? what self-respecting country would send their citizens to “Hell’s inferno”. This president needs to sit down at his desk and start with the basics. Perhaps a yellow pad would help. If he reviews his priorities as the leader of the united states, I think where the 2015 olympics are held would be down the list. If he doesn’t pay attention to the current top priorities, then it will be academic as the US will look more like the post break up USSR.

From a lawyer named Stephen Porter at a new blog called “Of Thee I Sing”:
“In recent years, the trend has been increasingly to bestow leadership positions to what we refer to as a new ruling class, comprised of people who have never held a private sector job, have never personally invested in job- creating activities, who know nothing of risk-taking, who are largely ignorant of the daily challenges that businesses small and large have to face and who, in fact, see private for-profit business as evil and profits as ill`gotten gains. It is difficult not to see their resemblance to the old Soviet nomenklatura whose bureaucratic power and patronage placed them in the upper echelons of society.”

In yesterday’s ABC evening news with Gibson I heard some comments that I found more disappointing than having lost to Brazil. “An anti-American atmosphere at IOC”? Please! The U.S. hosted the olympic games FOUR TIMES. The last two in Atlanta, 1996, and Los Angeles, 1984. The olympic games is A WORLD EVENT!!! And everybody has the right to participate and, yes, win. And my big disappointment was to see that in my favorite national evening news program, nobody was gracious enough…to offer congratulations to Brazil. What a shame! THAT is a big disappointment!

The American delagation did a good job of trying to secure the games for Chicago but the results were negative. No one is to blame. Remember, there were four countries competing to get the olympics in 2016 and only one could win. Japan, and two other great countries lost out as well. There wern’t any guarantees that we would win and i am glad we made the effort. Some people play the blame game but that is so childish and stupid.

Obama’s handling of the economy and billion dollar bailouts is a total failure. Obama’s plan to reduce unemployment is a total failure. Obama’s Stimulus Plan is a total failure. Obama’s Health Care Reform is a total failure. Obama’s attempt to close Gitmo is a total failure. Obama’s strategy in Afghanistan is a total failure. Obama’s kowtowing and kissing the feet of the Arab and Communist Nations is a total failure. Obama’s attempt to control North Korea, Iran and Russia is a total failure. Obama’s mind-boggling trillion dollar deficit spending is a total failure. Getting foreign countries to like us more is a total failure. Appointing tax cheats, corrupt, communist and incompetent cabinet members and czars is a total failure. NOW THE CHICAGO OLMPICS HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A TOTAL FAILURE (LAST PLACE IN THE VOTING…..PLEASE!!! I THOUGHT CHICAGO WAS THE FRONT RUNNER). There are so many other failures, but time does not permit me to keep going.

Of course it would have been wonderful to host the Olympics in Chicago. That’s not the point. The point is this:
It’s beneath the station of the President of the United States to go groveling at the feet of the IOC.
That’s the point. It diminishes the power of the office, particularly when the IOC doesn’t select the US. It’s almost as if he doesn’t know what his job is.
The President needs to focus on one thing and one thing only: the economy. If tomorrow he put aside all his pet agenda projects like health care and cap and tax, and instead created a presidential blue ribbon panel on economic recovery he would gain ungarnered support from both sides of the aisle.

This is a wake-up call that the USA needs to stop being the world’s policeman and benefactor. We need to take care of ourselves. We have spent countless tax dollars protecting Europeans and others and nobody appreciates our efforts.Stimulous money allowances went to Korean and other foreign car dealters. Why do we prop up other countries economies to the detriment of our own. I saw nothing wrong with the Obamas promoting Chicago. It is in the USA. To continue with a thought – Bush did not cause the recession. It started with Lyndon Johnson’s bill. Continued with Nixon’s Fred & Fannie. Continued with Carter’s bill. Continued with Clinton’s bill. Continued with Americans buying anything they wanted on credit. Continued with ACORN forcing banks to make bad loans. Continued with constant government spending over decades. Bush warned Congress in 2004 – ON VIDEO – the country was headed for trouble. Barney Frank said, “No Way”. Your government is at fault. Period. And Obama is pushing for bankruptcy. Text Book Marxism. If you ever read a book – read that one.

To John A. Let’s say Bush did not originally cause the recession but it started to go down hill at the end of 2007 and I think he was president then. In that time…nothing was done to limit the banks, correct the banks, prevent job losses, address foreclosures, stop job losses. Maybe, just maybe if a few steps in the right direction ,this recession would not have gotten as bad. No one wants to dump everything on him but he had a chance to take some action from 2007 until he left and only in the last few months did he beg everyone to go along and give the banks the money. Obama did not want to originally and neither did Mc Cain but they did the right thing to help their president out. That is more than I can say for the republicans so far. Maybe you should read some of the new books out which places the blame on the neglect of the party in power…the republican party and even some of them are saying they dropped the ball. So let’s not pontificate about who started it…..it’s who ends it or works toward ending it that counts.

Please advise President Obama to
1. Stop being a Rock Star and act more
presidential.
2. He must learn fast that he is President of all Americans and they do
not appreciate their country being trashed abroad.
3. Obtain only the best advice, and drop all these newbies who cannot spot failure in front of their eyes.
4. When he takes off in AF1, the prestige of America is on he line, make
it a success Mr. President.

When I first heard that Obama was not able to close the deal, I laughed – and knew, like everyone that does deals for a living that this was a significant setback. Here is a guy that came out of nowhere and basically did little or nothing in his career and he not only took the Democratic nomination over Clinton but out maneuvered and out campaigned the RNC and John McCain (30 year veteran and genuine war hero though, admittedly bad campaigner in comparison).
And, once in Office not only did not stick to his whole “transparent/open debate/bi partisan/ govern from the middle” campaign closing tool he has ram rodded a far left agenda into law that no one ever imagined possible , not even his base. He did it all on the Obama Brand and became Closer in Chief. For people that do deals for a living, it has been quite a showing.
Then BOOM – after ramping up and putting together a serious campaign to bring the Olympics to Chicago he doesn’t make it through the first round of voting. He has his wife out pitching it as well (of course, she was doing us all a big favor, but, hey – she thought she was going to be in the winner’s circle). There were no stops to this campaign – people that do deals for a living all thought ‘he would never head down this road and take this risk with the brand unless he had the deal closed from the beginning.’ He likes the winner’s circle and it is all part of the brand – and BOOM, he is dropped kicked into pure orbit like a rookie just out of junior college.
Naturally, he takes the high road and wipes the egg off his face as graciously as possible only to come back to genuine turbulence among his supporters and his critics – the Afghanistan situation is alarming his base and every day he waits on a decision American lives are being lost, unemployment continues to erode the credibility of his Stimulus plan, his health care plan has already missed its mark time wise and most people are sick and tired of the party line and looking real hard at the amendments (where the real law is done) and his big push to have open dialogue with our enemies is being trampled on the anvils of practicality and real-time governance.
People that do deals for a living are looking at this defeat in Copenhagen as a sign that the ether is wearing off and the Closer in Chief and well spring of the Brand is in trouble.
There are a lot of people – good Americans, loyal and supportive in every way that are glad this happened. That’s sad – that’s sad that he didn’t bother to sell the American people first. The people that do deals for a living are astonished and know that that the Brand itself is in real trouble. The laughing part when I first heard he did not close the deal – well – in my view, this is not a minor setback or a blip on the screen; this is a genuine cause for concern that the Brand is in real trouble and may have run it’s course.
