AARP To Endorse House Health Care Bill

Democratic sources tell me that AARP – easily the most influential seniors lobby – will endorse the health reform legislation put together by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats.

Speaker Pelosi and her leadership team have been lobbying the lobby for weeks. AARP officials also met yesterday with WH Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and took the proposed endorsement to their Board of Directors.  A public announcement is expected tomorrow or Friday, in advance of a vote by the full House likely to come on Saturday.

“Big victory,” summed up one top Democrat.

The Speaker still doesn’t have the 218 votes she needs to pass the bill.  Moderate Dems are balking over abortion funding and illegal immigrants.   But Democratic leaders insist the votes will be there before the gavel falls Saturday.

Even if 100% oppose this bill, just Rahm it.

=============================
The AARP is NOT representing their own members but instead has become a lobbying group for the ideology of their power hungry management.

Surprising since AARP is just a cover for big insurance!

Posted by: La Chatte | November 4, 2009, 5:28 pm 5:28 pm

The complextity of the bill aside, I can’t even understand the politics of the health care debate sometimes. Why would the AARP endorse a bill no one thinks can clear the Senate?

Posted by: Myron | November 4, 2009, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

The major function of AARP is to sell health insurance, besides publishing a magazine. It has long been serving as a mouthpiece of Pelosi on health care reform. It neglects what said inside the HR3200, while stating that the health care bill contains no government involvement. Since only half of its membership are seniors over 65, it probably doesn’t care much if it loses all the members over 65, all they care is to be prosperous on selling health insurance, which means big money.

AARP goes along with Pelosi. Could it be that they are in bed with Nancy? AARP is another arm of the Socialist Democrat Party.

I wonder if AARP will become the ‘adminstrator’ for the public option plan.
I’ve been fed up with them for awhile. Pulled my mother’s Medicare supplemental from them a couple years back. My aunt moved hers earlier this year.

Posted by: malcat | November 4, 2009, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

Many people have already left the aarp.
Their position on this is pretty outrageous considering the cuts in the bill.

Posted by: jonny | November 4, 2009, 5:56 pm 5:56 pm

AARP is a greart supporter of Seniors. I belong, have the supplemental health insurance and I andall my medical providers are happy with it.
There is no one else speaking for us. They are keeping are Medicare benifits safe and make sure we have a united voice on important issues.

I canceled AARP as soon as they got political and aligned themselves with Pelosi. Anything she is involved in is bad for our country. Pelosi doesn’t what most American people think, she needs to go. Pelosi is just bad for our country and she take that punk Reid with her.

I cancelled my membership and so did my mom, they ask when you call why you are cancelling and I told them because they supported this stupid Health Care Bill and I DID NOT!!!!!!

They will get their share of the 47 million uninsured that will now have to buy insurance very profitable. There are lots of medicare insurance plans that are much cheaper than what they offer.

Posted by: earl | November 4, 2009, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

I don’t think the current reform really reform as much as they should – even “Japan Incorporated” – a nation that’s in love with capitalism, has a higher percentage of private medical facilities than us, and has absolutely NO public options, realizes it’s absolutely ridiculous to allow for-profit health insurers: all their 240 private companies for non-profit. Who’d be foolish enough to support health network costs controlled by companies that desire 15% annual profits, spend 18% of all health care dollars on admistrative costs like corporate jets, waste 25% of the rest on paperwork, and need more patients and higher costs – above the rate of inflation – to keep their house of cards going? Oh, yeah – there is ONE – and only one country foolish enough to do that, isn’t there? Any wonder the rest of the world is now calling us “The Land of the Fee”?

Posted by: The_Mick | November 4, 2009, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm

You can kiss off any further renewal of my memebership from now on. Once you decided to get too close to the political arena especially with Nancy Pelosi that put a very sour taste in my mouth. I can’t believe you would succumb to their awful tactics. Yes we need reform but not with what they are trying to propose and try to shove it down our throats.

The House and Senate Health Care Reform Bills slashed Medicare by 500 billion dollars which will severely cut health care services for Seniors. So Answere: Because the CEO of the AARP, Barry Rand is a supporter of President Obama. If ABC or any of the other MSM in the tank outlets had any integrity, they would be pointing this out. Without a doubt if the head of the AARP was a supporter of President Bush ABC would be shouting this info from the roof tops.
ncoming AARP CEO A. Barry Rand contributed $8,900 to President Obama’s campaign committees, federal records show.
“Rand, a retired senior executive at Xerox Corp., Avis Group and Equitant Inc. and the current chairman of Howard University’s board of trustees, gave the maximum $4,600 to Obama’s election campaign and an additional $4,300 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising entity of Obama and the Democratic National Committee.
Altogether, Rand has given $15,900 to Democratic campaign committees since 1995, according to searches of Federal Election Commission databases dating back to 1990 that are maintained by CQ Money Line and the Center for Responsive Politics.”

I have several times considered joining AARP, however because of their liberal positions I have hesitated to do so. But supporting the gov. run health care offered by Pelosi, is the final straw!! Not only will I “never” have anything to do with AARP, but I will also urge everyone I know to do likewise Something smells foul here between Pelosi and the government. Supprise…Supprise!!!!

Posted by: Dick | November 4, 2009, 6:40 pm 6:40 pm

The AARP CEO (not the members who know their health care is being slashed) need to stop drinking the government run socialized health care kool aide and face reality. The reality is government run programs never come in under budget and are unfailingly engulfed in fraud, waste and corruption. Government’s track record is always failure when it comes to running anything including Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, the Post Office and Amtrack that are without exception running in the red and going bankrupt. So expecting a different outcome from the Senate and House’s Health Care Reform Bills is pure insanity.
Moreover the Senate and House Health Care Reform Bills are filled with thousands of pages of government laws and mandates, 700 billion dollar increases in taxes, an evisceration of Medicare services for Seniors and promises of higher quality health care at lower costs which will inevitable be broken.
The bottom line is government can never be counted on to keep their promises of higher quality and lower cost Health Care for all. Just look how the promises to Seniors are being broken by government. The House and Senate Bills eviscerates health care services to Seniors who need health care the most.
What is so despicable is that the CEO of the AARP cares more about supporting Obama’s agenda than standing up for the Seniors he was hired to represent.
What is certain, is that the promises that are being made to everyone of lower costs and higher quality health care will also be broken. Why? Because there is no way to realistically pay for them other than eviscerating the services promised to everyone when the costs go out of control as they inevitably will. The real tragedy is that once the leftist Democrats succeed in their goal of destroying the private health care system, only the elite in DC will have the luxury of a “Cadillac” health care system. The rest of the “masses” as the leftists Dems like to refer to us, will be left standing in line in vain, waiting for that surgery or treatment we need to save our lives.

Posted by: Jim Bob | November 4, 2009, 7:19 pm 7:19 pm

The AARP wants the bill because it cuts funding for Medicare Advantage plans that 1 out of 5 seniors enjoy. Why? Because AARP sells Medigap policies and with no Medicare Advatage plans to compete with they will clean up. But don’t talk about that George.
And the AARP has been endorsing the destruction of the health care system ever since the Liberals decided they wanted the government to take it over.
Think about this. The bill is going to cost 1.2 Trillion and doesn’t include the 1/4 Trillion doctor fix nor does it calculate how much this will cost when the Liberals pass their immigration reform next year. How about another 15 to 20 million receiving government subsidies. Let’s not talk about that though.

Posted by: ThePainfulTruth | November 4, 2009, 7:23 pm 7:23 pm

I smell a rat with this endorsement given that the House Bill cuts Medicare by 500 billion dollars. Seems to me that the head of the CEO, Barry Rand who gave a lot of money the Obama campaign, cares more about his support of Obama, than representing the Seniors he was hired to represent.

If AARP supports the healthcare bill as it presently stands I will drop my existing Medicare Supplement.
Their most recent mailing was so vague that I read it and did not understand or could compute my new premium starting in January.
I will closely watch the bill… if they continue to support the present form they will lose me as a customer forever.

I really do not get it. Who is representing us as AARP . Who picks the one’s endorsing any thing. I did not have a vote on this with AARP representatives. I would never vote for such a socialistic bill, let alone the idea of having our health care cut. I think it is time to through the AARP booklet away, and slap my hands if I ever write out another check with AARP written on the Pay to Line.

I am an AARP member and I support AARPs endorsement of the House Health Care Reform Bill. AARP stands up for what is best for interest of all seniors. I would say Republicans risk loosing the support of most senior citizens if they continue to bash AARP and stand in the way of health care reform.

Cut treatments for our elderly citizens, in order to free up money that will be given to a bunch of illegals, through amnesty provided by Obama!
It is disgusting and a slap in the face of every senior citizen that paid into this for years and years.

If it’s good enough for the American public, why isn’t it good enough for a great, Democratic, elected officials and Mr. President?

OK, so let’s look at a CURRENT health care issue and take a moment to review the government’s handling of the concern… H1N1
Here in Dallas, they received some 10k doses of vaccine. Mind you this was first a scare LAST YEAR and then again earlier this spring, but we’re short of vaccines for everyone. So what is being done? Doses are being given to pregnant women, ederly and young children.. oh, but ONLY if they have NO INSURANCE.
What? If you have insurance you CANNOT get the vaccine?
Let the RATIONING of health care begin!

Obama has spent more time golfing than President Bush.
Obama has done about six times more political fundraisers in his first year than Bush.
Obama spent only four hours in New Orleans on his only trip there in his first year in office after criticizing Bush for lack of attention after Hurricane Katrina
LOL Wow what a President.
Maybe Nukes in Iran which will cause
WWIII eventually. The economy is in the toilet after spending getting 787 BILLION dollars. His job numbers are ALL LIES.
Congress has nothing to do but pass more TAX restrictions on your liberty bills. Obama didnt even remove the WIRE tap stuff BUSH put into place.
Its a complete and utter failed year of his Presidency. Weak president that allows OLD NUT case Pelosi and Reid to run his adgenda. SAD

The insane Obama crowd has demonized insurance who operate at a 3% to 4% profit margin. The companies work within the laws they are given.
The costs are HIGH and so are the premiums.
Is the current system perfect?
NO its not and we could use a with a few new laws to make it a LOT better.
In Texas TORT reform is working to lower
costs! Why not pass that bill?
Why not fix kicking someone off a policy with pre-existing conditions?
Create a bill that if you have been on a
policy for 90 days your history doesnt
mean anything. That might force us to
take physicals but so what?
WHY dont they pass small BILLS which have bipartisan support? Ask that first. Then demonize

My wife and I, as well as our parents, have all dropped their membership with AARP due to AARP’s support of all things OBAMA. They continue to send us their written propaganda and offers which we promptly stuff back into their stamped envelopes and send them right back to AARP, on their dime!
AARP hopes to grab all of that Medicare Supplemental Insurance business when the proposed healthcare insurance bill pulls the billions of dollars from it. Same with Tri-Care. All seniors and veterans should be contacting their elected representatives and telling them not to support this bill. Didn’t they get the message from the recent elections in new Jersey and Virginia?

Posted by: Michael | November 5, 2009, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

Even my GAY and handicapped father is against this Health Care bill. He is on Medicare and has dealt with the inefficient bureaucracies of the government. He has been a lifetime Left Spectrum Liberal. He has ALS and has spent most of his life savings because Medicare is such a mess. He has been at private clinics when he met patients from Canada and they have told him that government CONTROLED medicine is terrible. Speaking of it a couple days ago, he really hoped that this would not go through because he realizes how terrible it would be for my family. I am self employed and currently only have health insurance for my wife and daughter. I try to stay as healthy as I can but go without since the downturn in the economy. This bill will only hurt me further financially. With business slow I barely pay the bills and taxes. Now I have to fear being FINED for not having insurance for myself. How is this helping me? I see that over 60,000 seniors have left AARP since they started leaning toward supporting this Bill. I hope many more like my Liberal Father will finally see the light and quit the group. Tell the government to stop over taxing me and stop wasting Stimulus on payoffs and create real jobs that bring my customers back then I will be able to afford Health Insurance on my own.

If healthcare reform (isn’t really reform, however) passes, we all (except for immigrants and the poor) will be paying WAY more for premiums than we currently pay. Just check out how successful Mass. has been at controlling cost. They believe they have done great things by insuring majority in state, but at what cost? They will never control costs. Check out the American Senior Benefits Association (ASBA). They are opposed to the Health Reform Bill because they acknowledge that their own members are opposed to it. Some senior organizations want seniors to follow in the direction the organization leads. ASBA lets members take the lead and supports them by providing free membership, discounts on benefits, and keeping up to speed on what’s going on in Washington.

I’m sick of hearing everyone say the AMA is behind this bill. Its misleading. The AMA does not represent US doctors. Its stated 20 percent enrollment of US physicians is mostly Medical Students who are free and academics. Approximately 90 Percent of the AMAs finances are provided by the government and its basically a governmental rubber stamp.

AARP Services is a for profit organization of insurance being underwriten by major for profit insurance corporatrions. They have probably “crunched the numbers” and concluded to support the “bill” could be to their benefit. The Administration believes the “bill” is to US Citizens, a benifit. It would appear that if no citizen or insurance organization is unfairly partitioned from envolvement the Administration is leading a correct path towards “health care”.

It is not a small amount but billions of dollars at this time. How will they control this huge increase in fraud? They will not as they do not have to as their various union members will continue to reelect them.

I will not sign into their liberial organization that has no business being involved in government affairs. It seems that all of the upper class in Americia is looking for a share of the loot

I would apreciate a decent explnation as to how ,by taking a half trillion dollars from medicare is going to improve care service and quality.I believe Congress is trying to mess with our minds and I think AARP is helping them.
