Cheneys Welcome Seventh Grandchild
ABC News' Ann Compton and Nitya Venkataraman report:
Mary Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter, had her second child this morning at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC.
Sarah Lynne Cheney was born at 8:17 a.m., weighing 6lbs., 14 oz. Her parents are Mary and her partner of 18 years, Heather Poe. The couple’s first child, Samuel David Cheney, was born in May 2007.
The December 2006 announcement of Ms. Cheney’s first pregnancy garnered national headlines, and was marked by a notably terse exchange between the then-vice president and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
During a January 2007 appearance on CNN, Cheney bristled after Blitzer asked him to respond to a statement from ‘Focus on the Family’ about whether having a child outside of a married mother or father is best for the child.
Though Blitzer stood by his line of questioning, Cheney deemed it “out of line”.
The pregnancy also hit awkward notes for the Bush administration who won re-election in 2004 in no small part because of its opposition to gay and lesbian marriage.
In a 2004 interview with the New York Times, Bush said “studies have shown that the ideal is where a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman."
Mary Cheney campaigned for the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign in both 2000 and 2004, though her position on that point was clearly divergent from the president’s.
In a 2005 interview, Ms. Cheney told Diane Sawyer, "Every study has confirmed what matters is that children are raised in a loving and supportive environment. And there's no reason why that can't be provided by a same-sex couple."

Congratulations to the Cheney and Poe families on their granddaughter. I’m sure Mary and Heather feel very blessed.

Not sure why this is national news – who cares? Is Cheney hawking a book and scrounging for speaker fees too?

It is news because it goes against the stereotype of Cheney being a evil Republican bigot. He has a much more enlightened view of gay and lesbian affairs than the present occupant of the White House.I think that some my g&l friends realize that they have been had.True libertarians want gender discrimination out of the Republican party.I’m with Barry-I don’t care if they’re straight, only if they shoot straight.

curious how the ‘right’ is so anti-gay unless it’s their own family involved, then they become, ‘tolerant’

Named after a “Dummy”, ummmm. Yeah, curious isn’t it? Curious are these Folks only when it is Self-serving for THEM. Hopes she has healthcare. Oh, she does, she recieves “socialized” medical care paid by taxpayers as a family member of the Vice(ex) Pres.

I hate to be a monkeywrench in this discussion, but in the states where gay marriage has not passed the decisive factor has been the anti-gay influence of the black clergy, not conservatives.

Leaving politics out of it, why do we even care? Two loving people have been given the gift of another child. Good for them.

Do any of you know what Cheney’s position on same sex marriage is? Do any of you care? Of course not. All you care about is being able to type Darth Cheney.
Congratulations to the Cheney family on their new addition.

By being born, the baby is already deep in debt.

Congratulations on the new grandbaby…let’s hope it doesn’t act anything like it’s grandfather.

I hope I’m around to see this sticker on the bumpers of hydrogen-fusion-fueled zip-mobiles:
“Sam Cheney for President, 2049!”
My congratulations to the family. May the nation grow in grace by learning from their model. Here’s to the amazing future the Cheney family continues to help build!

Sarah Lynne will not know her father.
No matter how loving and supportive the environment, fathers still matter. The black community knows this fact more deeply than anybody else. We should listen to them, rather than assuming that they’re simply “anti-gay”.
Best wishes to the new baby and her family.
