New York Republican Dede Scozzafava Backs Democrat Bill Owens, After Suspending Her Bid for U.S. House Seat

ABC News’ Kristina Wong reports: In a surprise twist in the contentious special election race for a U.S. House seat in New York, moderate Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava endorsed the Democratic candidate, Bill Owens, on Sunday afternoon after announcing the day before that she was releasing her supporters.

Scozzafava, who supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage, suspended her campaign after high-profile Republicans, such as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, threw their support behind Doug Hoffman, a disaffected Republican running on the Conservative Party line.

Scozzafava’s decision to get out of the race was seen by analysts as exposing an ideological rift within the GOP in upstate New York — but it nevertheless came as a surprise on Sunday when she decided to endorse the Democratic candidate.

It was uncertain what impact Scozzafava’s endorsement will have on the race, given that most of her supporters are self-identified Republicans.

When she withdrew from the race on Saturday, the House Republican leadership, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich all switched their support from Scozzafava to Hoffman.

Scozzafava suspended her bid after a Siena College poll found she was in third place with 20 percent of the vote in the heavily Republican upstate New York district. Conservative Party nominee Hoffman and Democratic nominee Owens had 35 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

Scozzafava’s antipathy towards Hoffman was apparent when the three candidates held their only debate last week and she suggested that third-party rival lacked the conservative value of honesty.

“You know, when people talk about values, and conservative values, there is one value that has been sorely lacking in the campaign and that’s called honesty and truth and men that, perhaps, keep their word. I think those are very important values that any sort of representative that is going to Washington should live by,” said Scozzafava.

Here is Scozzafava's full statement, issued today at 2:06 p.m.:

Since announcing the suspension of my campaign, I have thought long and hard about what is best for the people of this District, and how to answer your questions. This is not a decision that I have made lightly.

You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District.

It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.

It’s not in the cards for me to be your representative, but I strongly believe Bill is the only candidate who can build upon John McHugh's lasting legacy in the U.S. Congress. John and I worked together on the expansion of Fort Drum and I know how important that base is to the economy of this region. I am confident that Bill will be able to provide the leadership and continuity of support to Drum Country just as John did during his tenure in Congress.

In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.

Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship and politics and work together. There's too much at stake in this election to do otherwise.

UPDATE: Bill Owens welcomed the endorsement from Scozzafava, and appeared with her at an event in Canton, New York Sunday afternoon.

After securing the endorsement of Scozzafava, Owens issued the following statement:

I am honored to have Assemblywoman Scozzafava’s endorsement. Over the course of her career, Dede has always committed to serving the people of Upstate New York before serving a partisan agenda.  I have a tremendous amount of respect for what she's accomplished. We share a commitment to finding common sense solutions to address the challenges we’re facing here in Upstate New York.

Now more than ever we need bipartisan solutions to help bring jobs to Upstate New York to get our economy back on track and move our country forward.  Those are the kinds of priorities I will fight for in Congress because that’s the kind of leadership Upstate New York needs right now.

Looks like there’s no room for moderates in the GOP. But what do you expect with leaders like Palin and Rush? I’m just eating my popcorn and having fun watching that party crumble, its very entertaining.

Bravo. It’s about time the the division that has developed with in the Republican Party be addressed. If this means that Republicans who are wanting to change the part steps up and endorses Democrats, so be it. Until the Republican Party realises that there has been a shift in in how voters, Independants, Republicans, and Democrats feel about politics in general. It’s time for the Republican Party to step out of the 17th Century and know that Reagonomincs as well as their same bullying of the people does not wash. I’m an Independant Voter and have voted Republican and Democrat. I have hated what this country has become and it’s time that the Republicans learn to change with the new as people change. If they don’t they will be seen as a bunch of greedy, big business, holier than thow thugs.

How pathetic! This says a lot about both parties. They are only interested in their own survival. They see an outside threat to the establishment, and they try to kill it. Oh, no! We can’t have that. A third party threatening the likes of the Democratic and Republican party? What a bunch of freaking idiots. For once, there is hope for this nation. The people are beginning to see through these politicians. America, it is time to get rid of these incumbents by voting independent or other. To hell with the Republican and Democratic party. They’ve held our country hostage long enough. Both are responsible for our deficit. And both are responsible for the mess we’re currently in. Say no to these self serving #$@# who think of themselves as royalty, looking down on the American people. Say enough is enough to the control they want over the lives of every individual in our Republic. Matters of rule and self governing should be returned back to the states where it belongs. These idiots have made a mess of our country by failing to adhere and uphold the Constitution of these United States. America, speak up and let your voices be heard this November and next. It is time to rid ourselves of these two parties once and for all. Make George Washington proud!!!

Clear indication that republican will lose this election. It is very hard for any republican party to win in a blue state with pure right wing conservative philosophies.I think Republican party is moving extreme right and they dont care about so called moderate republicans any more. That would mean republican party is quite ok to be tagged as party of red states. If that is what they think is best for them, they will not see the white house for decades to come.

Posted by: independentreviewer | November 1, 2009, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

This is in response to Mike saying that the Republican and Democrats have held this country hostage long enough. Sorry buddy, if that was so then it’s not either parties fault. The fault falls on us voters by allowing the parties to continue the same oold busines. This is why the Republicans lost this time around and by seeing that they have no room for moderate ideas with in their party tells me that they will loose again. It up to us the voters to be responsible when we take our ballot and vote. My opportunity came in the last Presidential Election, I still believe like I did when I voted, that Hilary Clinton would of been the better choice for President than Obama, so I wrote her in. I think my vote was justified especially in light of what she did recently with Pakistan. My point is at one time in this country Republicans weren’t ashamed to work along side Democrats and visa versa. When the Republican Party allowed the Christian Conservative Movement to come in and control their ideals and beliefs it is then that the Party became only one belief. When Religon enters the mix that is when you will see a division, something our for fathers faught hard and long to prevent. Twenty years ago I made a comment that if they allowed religion into the voting booth and the Republican Party you would see a division of the people with in the Party. It has now happened and unless the Republican Party truely, truely steps out of the religion the fisure that has began will get bigger and people that supported them will turn to another Party or Form a new one. We must take repsonsibility for our vote and this is what that vote has brought forth.

Hoffman isn’t even from our district, is financed by outsiders and is arrogant as can be. Guess the GOP has tossed us moderates to the wayside, and are kissing up to the right wing fringe of the party. Guess they forgot that WE vote, and it won’t be for Hoffman. We won’t be forgetting this.

Voters gave democrats one party control which is bad for democracy.
Dems always had the filibuster in the senate to block anything they didnt’ want during the bush years when gop had congress.
Now dems have 60 votes and are passing massive amounts of legislation that the gop can’t block.
Obama has already appointed one supreme court justice and 5 more are over 70 and likely to retire during his presidency.
Clinton and Bush had 2 supreme court justices while Obama looks likely to get 6.
So you gave Obama complete power. Obama has no checks and balances in the congress.
You gave Obama 60 dem senate seats and 257 dem house seats and 6 supreme court justices.
Obama has been given more power than FDR. FDR couldn’t even leave his mark on the courts like Obama will.
We will have Obama’s supreme court for the next 30-40 years.
Yet you are worried about doug hoffman who is meaningless. Who cares if Pelosi has 258 members or 257.
What the real issue is the voters gave one party absolute power which is bad for democracy. No party has ever been given absolute power like the democrats have been given.
There are two gops reps left in new york and dems keep riding high even with governor paterson.
With the media and illegal immigration this is a one party nation forever and ever.
Doug Hoffman is not the issue.

Posted by: PEK | November 1, 2009, 5:38 pm 5:38 pm

Justice Stevens has invited his past clerks to his retirment party in may.
That means Obama will have 2 supreme court justices in back to back years.
Ginsberg has cancer and will most likely be leaving the year after.
That means 3 supreme court justices in 3 years for obama.
Then you have scalia, kennedy, and breyer who are all 70-75 and could easily all 3 leave the court during obama’s presidency.
Obama will have 6 supreme court justices.
Think how liberal obama’s justices have already been and think that for the next 40 years we will be dealing with Obama’s very liberal supreme court.
That is the issue not doug hoffman who is meaningless.

Posted by: Jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:38 pm 5:38 pm

To NY Voter
You must like absolute power one party rule.
Dems have one party rule with paterson in albany and the assembly and senate.
Pelosi has 257 house seats and reid has 60 senate seats and obama is packing the courts.
I guess you like having ZERO checks and balances.
And moderates are meaningless now with massive illegal immigration.
Democrats will be permanently in charge forever and ever with illegal immigration swelling their ranks forever and ever.
Democrats with illegal immigration makes it impossible for another party to ever win the white house again.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:42 pm 5:42 pm

To NY voter dems ran lieberman out of the party and are running a primary opponent against specter.
But you don’t care how far left the dem party goes.
Van jones in the white house no big deal dems can go as far left as they want when it comes to moderates they love radical leftism.
Well with illegal immigration your votes will be meaningless as we go into permanent liberal rule as the election will come down to which candidate is more liberal.
I am leaving this country I have had it.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:44 pm 5:44 pm

Posted by: TX_MBell | November 1, 2009, 5:50 pm 5:50 pm

With illegal immigration and Obama stopping any enforcement of it you don’t have to worry about republicans.
Dems have a permanent one party rule with massive illegal immigration and Obama’s dream act and Obama’s comprehensive immigration reform.
There can be no two party system with massive illegal immigration.
So enjoy your permanent liberal rule forever and ever.
It is impossible for a democrat to lose the southwest now with massive illegal immigration meaning permanent one party rule.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

Democrats put van jones in the white house and david paterson in the governor’s office but somehow the gop are the extremists.
Enjoy your liberal rule.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:54 pm 5:54 pm

NY voter I am sick of this one party absolute rule and you so called moderates then blaming the gop when david paterson is making a mess in albany.
257 dem house seats
60 dem senate seats
Obama on his way to 6 supreme court justices.
I am driving up to NY 23 and working to counter your vote. I will make it my life’s mission to counter your vote.
Enough is enough

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

Hoffman worked the 1980 olympics in lake placid and was the head accountant.
Bill Owens is just a pelosi lapdog.
You so called moderates don’t care about the zero checks and balances.
You so called moderates don’t care that dems run out centrists from their party like lieberman.
No you are hypocrites.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 5:59 pm 5:59 pm

LOL Again! I love it every time these liberals call scozzafava a moderate! This woman was liberal democrat through and through. She was splitting the democrat vote though, and so hoffman really might be in trouble without powerful party backing of either party. This is why we may never have true representation. Everyone says they want change, but they always vote for the same lie and never get it from either dems or repubs.

The more we can move the Republicans back to Conservativism the more we will have a party we can believe in to defeat the obscene growth in the federal government. We are a republic NOT a federalist nation.

I use to live in that district before moving South. Contrary to the Democratic Southern part of NY, Northern NY is usually very conservative and goes red instead of blue. This may tilt that scenerio. Upstate Ny has been hard hit by the economy but has been so for years and the republicans have had their chance to help the citizens there. This could tip the moderate and independant voters over to Democrat which would be a HUGE victory for this normally republican district.

It’s time for the rest of the moderate Republicans like Dede and Olympia Snowe to grow a pair and stand up to the right wing of their party that is tearing the GOP to shreds. If they all get together en masse, make a strong bold united statement against this idiocy of Rush, Beck and company, they might just resurrect a dying party. Interesting that so far only two women have the brass to do this. I challenge all my fellow moderate intelligent Republicans in that NY district to stage a revolt against the outsiders who have come in and tried to tell you all how to vote and what to believe to vote for the Democrat. You will go down in history!!

Clear indication that republican will lose this election >>>> This is a clear indication that the republicans will WIN every state in the union.
Regan CARRIED EVERY STATE. When republicans went ROUGE and started to SPEND like morons and forget to be the conservatives people had hoped they were defeated.
The policy of defeatism and anti Americanism along with BIG government is about to finally get its due. WHO wants to be shackled for decades by high taxes and fee’s for KICKBACKs, PAYOLA and corruption Obama style?
There will be no middle class left because they always pay the lion share of the taxes and fee’s. So in short all the growth in government does nothing but lower out standard of living. The middle class gets poorer. Fewer jobs exist. Whats the October numbers? HIGHEST unemployment in how long? This President led by this congress has destroyed decades worth of wealth put the dollar at risk and enriched only WALL STREET. ASK A TRUCKER what Christmas is going to bring. They are usually all working now round the clock. BUT.. How many are parked?
In short the party of PELOSI and REID with Obama as their servant, since he has written no proposals to date, have not nothing short of destroy the confidence of the American people. SO THANK GOD some conservatives are coming BACK and I wish them ALL the very best.
I am hoping for victory all over the east coast.

“…liberals call scozzafava a moderate!…She was splitting the democrat vote… ”
Yes, because a district that hasn’t voted in a Democrat Rep in 40 years must have a HUGE Democratic population. The only thing that a win by Hoffman will prove (and he will win) is that the 17% party (GOP) can’t even find a Republican that lives in this district to represent them, so they have to bus one in.
And BTW we’ll take all of your fiscal-conservatives that aren’t willing to march lock=step to orders from the Palin politburo and FoxPravda. Geez, and they accuse us of being fascists – look in the mirror before you turn on your neighbors for not being “pure” enough.

Reclaiming America. One real American at a time. Voters want real representation. Not party puppets following through on agendas that our ancestor came to America to get away from and fought wars to keep at bay. Today the attack on America is not with military might but the power of deception and bribed devotion. The enemy knows that capitalism without family values and a moral compass at its heart creates a class of people that seeks a caretaker. When the numbers of those that seek a caretaker are great enough a free democracy can be hijacked through the vote by Socialist and Marxist that make promises that are unsustainable. Venezuela has fallen victim to the deception. Our families values are attacked and our church charities are being displaced with government entitlements. We can teach people to fish but now the government has made laws that forbid the fishing.

I don’t understand why republicans have to support republicans only and visa versa for democrats. Why can’t a person choose who they want to support rather than a party? This reminds me of cliques in middle and high school…you can’t talk to that group of kids or you won’t fit into our group anymore….please grow up!

Exposed as the mole that she was! It was all a game! There are more of them, some have changed already and others have been dealt with (Bloomberg, Specter, Snowe, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, etc.)

Posted by: BK-1970 | November 1, 2009, 11:31 pm 11:31 pm

This is no surprise. She wasn’t a true conservative Republican, for sure. She was just another dem posing as a Republican…much like Specter.

Posted by: bo | November 1, 2009, 11:38 pm 11:38 pm

I’m wondering how Dede’s campaign promises of less taxes, less gov’t spending, self-sufficiency over gov’t dependency will go over with her new friends in the WH.
Seems like the exact opposite of everything the Obama Administration stands for.
Time to pull a Specter.
Life is too short to live a lie.
Dede is a Democrat.

Posted by: ollie | November 1, 2009, 11:42 pm 11:42 pm

We’ll know soon enough if her move garners the deal she struck behind closed door to swing her votes to the democrat. She really had nothing to lose, since she was already running third. It won’t work though, because the district is Republican. They won’t elect a democrat, haven’t in over a 100 years.

Posted by: Rob | November 1, 2009, 11:49 pm 11:49 pm

Enjoy the Dems DeDe.
They love you now.
But one wrong move, say one critical thing about Obama and you will go under the bus so fast your head will spin.
Enjoy your new home.
Been a Republican your whole life huh?

I’m sorry, but I just can’t get into this race.
There is too much time from now until the 2010 election. I find no real value in this. (Other than to talk politics.)
If the economy stays the same, or gets worse, people will look for change in the Senate and the House. What happens to health care reform will also play a role.
I believe that the people of NY are voting for the politician, and not necessarily if they have a D, C, or R in front of their name. It’s the two BIG parties making this a big deal.
If the conservative wins in NY, does that mean conservatives have it made? Hell no, they have a long road ahead.
If the democrat wins, does it mean that they can take it easy? No, because anything can happen.
But I digress, other than being interesting, not much can be learned here, from this race.

Posted by: The Angry Republican | November 1, 2009, 11:55 pm 11:55 pm

Its good the confusion is over . Now Newt and Ann, the two leading book writers in Rep. party know how badly wrong they were in endorsing their favorable candidate in NY state.

Posted by: austin | November 2, 2009, 12:09 am 12:09 am

She always was a liberal – so she is finally coming out and saying so. She just fried her political career though… just as all the other party switchers have this year. The Republicans will never accept her back, and the Dems will only use her for the votes she might bring this time – and then she is out on her ear. I guess she decided she was done with politics. You don’t play stunts like this and expect to be trusted by either party. She should have learned that with Snowe, etc.

Posted by: clr | November 2, 2009, 12:30 am 12:30 am

The “Take that!” lead-in to the article was a bit much.
Withdrawing and endorsing someone in the other party is the ultimate sign of a sore loser, someone who probably thought they were entitled to win, but was robbed. In addition, for good or bad, it is hard to run as a pro-choice Republican and she cannot be suprised she was pushed out.

Posted by: Robert | November 2, 2009, 12:47 am 12:47 am

How many of you that are bad mouthing Dede live in her district? this about the voters and not about the party loyalty. Hoffman doesn’t even live in the district and she does, so who would represent the district better?

Posted by: dan | November 2, 2009, 1:31 am 1:31 am

I cannot relate to the republican party anymore.

Posted by: unsurprised | November 2, 2009, 1:36 am 1:36 am

Not all republicans are cheaters and liars. Its good to see the honest republicans jumping ship in the House.
For 8 years, republican right wingers stole trilions from the US treasury in an orgy of arrogant disregard for public welfare, with the subsequent economic collapse. This current cabal of republicans in office, are not wotth a bucket of warm spit. Americans should vote them all out of office.

Posted by: Makay | November 2, 2009, 1:42 am 1:42 am

I think the right wingers need to hop on a boat and find a new place to make their crazy right wing theocracy with a stockpile of weapons in every house and nobody paying a single tax, no garbage pick up, no paved roads, no eduation, no healthcare, no kids vaccinated. They can dig in their yards for oil like jed clampet and walk around saying “don wan no gov’nmint nobody tell’n me ta do not’n!”

Posted by: yee haw jethro | November 2, 2009, 1:44 am 1:44 am

In addition, for good or bad, it is hard to run as a pro-choice Republican and she cannot be suprised she was pushed out.—yes, so while most of us are fighting towards a government that makes good fiscal sense, and grow jobs, and invest in future technologies that will grow jobs and hence, grow the economy, republicans just vote to force young girls to develope and birth babies against their will. Unbelievable. I mean, what is wrong with this group of wacko. Have you lost touch entirely with reality? Christ never told you to force girls to maintain pregnancies against thier will. I have no idea where you wackos think you got your marching orders from and you just throw the rest of society under the bus for your weird obsession. “wackos” is putting it lightly.

Posted by: cannot relate | November 2, 2009, 1:51 am 1:51 am

Yes, giving control of our government to a single political party is not a good idea. For example, when the republicans were in control they:
1. sitting there and doing nothing while our manufacturing base goes overseas
1a. telling the American public your party is against abortion, but not doing anything about it, lip service
1b. out and out lying
2. spending way more than we take in.
3. borrowing money from communist china and Mexico so we can give bill gates and Donald trump a tax break
4. sitting there and allowing our world trade center get attacked, and then attacking a country that had nothing to with the world trade center attacks (letting bin laden disappear)
5. letting let our southern border go largely unprotected and then claiming our country is safe from future attacks.
6. selling our seaports to a foreign country and then try to claim our country is safe from future attacks
7.sitting there and pretending all kids have health care,
8.giving the oil companies tax breaks while the price of gas triples,
9.letting small oil refineries get bought up buy bigger refineries and closing them just so the price of gas can triple,
10. putting wounded solders in roach infested hospitals and sending soldiers to war without the proper equipment and then claiming they support the troops
11giving Halliburton huge no-bid contracts only to watch them not do the work they were paid to do and let them get away with it
12. covering up for child predators cause we need mark Foley to keep his seat and then not punishing Foley or the men that covered up for him
13. outing CIA agents
14. lowering the interest rates to practically nothing, creating an artificial housing boom in attempt to cover up the highly negative effects of free trade
15. making up and cherry picking intelligence
16. hiring attorneys that are big fat liars or have the memory equivalent to the common house fly
17. pollution
18. allowing tons of money to be “lost” in Iraq and not even trying to find it, but yet vetoing and voting against a bill that would give more childern health care cuase it would be to expensive.
19. pretending two drafter dodgers (one who was a male cheerleader) are tough strongmen
20. allowing large cargo bins to enter our country, and then not inspecting most of them, and pretending you are strong on terror
21. Flying the Saudis out of America on Sept 12th before the FBI could question them.
22. Secret Cheney energy meetings nobody can see the guest list on.
23. Cheney getting caught deleting his personal meeting list, contrary to the Records Acts.
24. Condi Rice getting caught giving State Secrets to Israel.
25. Crying like little babies about having to stay up all night, in attempts to break up a filibuster on the Iraq invasion, but gladly staying up until 3 am in order to pass a drug bill written by the drug companies, costing the tax payers Billions
26.Bush Administration spent more than $2.6 billion in public relations and media contracts in a two and a half year span…….big waste of our tax dollars
27. ABRAMOFF! The biggest crook in the history of modern politics and lobbying.
28. Cheney’s PNAC group “predicting” the necessity of a 911 event to go into Iraq back in 1998.
29. Not being there to order the planes shot down on 911 when they should have been. Or choosing not to.
30. Abu Ghraib/Legalizing Torture
31. Corporate owned prisons and the war on drugs to keep them filled, what a big fat waste of tax dollars
32. shooting Pat Tillman in the forehead 3 times, in a tight pattern, burning his clothes and dairy, and then lying about it
33. putting Martha Stewart in jail for insider trader, not only allowing GW Bush to get away with it 4 times but allowing him to run for president
34. putting Bernard Ebbers (worldcom) in jail for overstating corporate profits, allowing Richard Cheney to not only walk, but become the Vice President after commiting the same crime
35. not fixing our infrastructure, while borrowing money not to fix it, but to give Bill Gates a tax cut
36. illegal wire tapping
37. passing a bankrputcy written by the credit card industry, that was supposed to lower credit fee, but take note they are higher then ever b-4
38. passing legislation written by banks, that allows banks to rape college students that borrow money
39. Using Christianity for political gain & votes.
40. Using the corrupt Gonzales Justice Department for White House/GOP political gain.
41. Interfering in private US citizen issues fr political gain (Teri Schievo)
42. Hypocritically impeaching Clinton then forgive Libby’s 5 convictions.
43. pretending we are all morons by naming bills with titles like…….the clean air act, no child left behind, healthy forestes initiative, patriot act, ect………and in reality they function inversely to the dumbed down titles….
44. Refusing to allow the United States to participate in protocols studying global warming
45. Refusing to pass bills that support stem cell research, and impeading science in general, why are you such science haters, next time you have a heart attack dont go see the doctor, just lie there pray, lets see how that works…..stop going to the denist, and just pray your teeth dont rot
46. trying to cheat people out of their hard earned social security benefits and pension plans
47. for some insane reason giving forgeign companies control of our toll roads……..thank you indiana
48. deciding citizens 18 years old are too mentally immature to handle drinking alcohol, but at the same time sending recruiters to our high schools and colleges trying to sign up the same people they have deemed mentally immature to sign up for the military and be put in life or death situations…….too mentally immature to drink but not to immature to die.
49. trying to privatize everything is sight
50. constantly destroying documents that by law should not be………first nixon, the ollie north (to save regan’s worthless hide) and now bush and cheney
51. 40 years of lying and corruption, starting with nixon, then to regan and now bush
52. Screaming to impeach a president for lying about an extramarital affair while ignoring lies that led us to war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 when such lies resulted in more deaths than the 9/11 attack. If the first offence is enough to impeach, why isn’t the second?
53. filling positions with friends or campiagn contributors, instead of the most qualified job canidate
54. hating cuba cause they are commies but loving china ignoring they are commies….hypocrits
55. Making big enough interest payments to China to fully fund their military and space program
56. Gutting regulatory agencies that protect our health and well being. ie. USDA inspections, Customs inspections (Chinese goods) FDA and EPA authority.
57. Ignoring the most desperate of people during a massive catastrophe call Katrina and Rita and having the Gall to say “Nice job Brownie”
58. Hiring a know nothing crony to head FEMA when his expertise was running a horse show.
59. Using Politics and direct White House involvement in firing State Attorneys because they went after Republican Corruption instead of going after Democrats
60. destroying thousands of emails, breaking the law with out shame!!!!!
61. out and out lying
62. giving billions and billions of our tax dollars to wall street with absolutely no constraints
63. standing for 8 years doing nothing while americans lost their health care insurance or had them watered down to the point that they are useless
Lest you forget.

She knew she couldn’t win and she knew Doug Hoffman was the reason, he was gaining Republican support. We need more politicians who are successful in private business to take that experience to Washington. These career politicians are out of touch with the struggles of the people. They even wrote themselves out of participation in the 1900 page house health care bill. Shouldn’t they have to live with it if we do? We need to vote them all out.

Isn’t Benedict Arnold from around there?

So, the Republicans seem happy to have driven ou tall moderates from their party. Actually, this candidate had a voting record that was right in the middle of the political spectrum. What we will see now is decades of the Republican Party as the minority party. Of course, the downside is that the Democratic Party will be forced to the right because the dissaffection of moderate Republicans.

And now let me introduce the new ambasador to [some cherry picked ?] the new dem. Dede ??.

The Change that was voted for in November comes to an end on Tuesday. Republican landslide.
We need the jobs coming back to America.

It´s hard to believe that an outsider who doesn´t even live in the district has the support Hoffman has. Don´t the people of this district want someone from home to represent them? We are all accustomed to outsiders running for, and getting elected to Senate seats, but Congressional district? What does this portend, a new era of carpetbaggers????

Posted by: BachisBest | November 2, 2009, 7:05 am 7:05 am

Dede shows herself to be a true public servant by endorsing the candidate she sees as best able to represent the people of her state. There aren’t too many politicians who are that honest.
Best of luck to Dede.

If the libertarians would give up the idea that it’s possible to actually go back to the constitutionalists and pioneering state America was in 200 years ago they could very well take it and run. Simply be truly fiscally responsible and socially liberal and stop touting isolationism. Most people would fall along those lines ideologically. Who really wants government intrusion and high taxes? Every wealthy liberal I know has no problem hiding behind every tax break available and conservatives sleep around or smoke pot or whatever. We have to create this new party. That’s what the revolution will be. I’m wondering if the establishment in Washington would really abide by a voting public who has finally decided to get rid of the current status quo? Seriously. Would they? Or would it lead to violence ultimately as Washington insiders twisted their power in a last ditch effort to remain in control. Something to think about.

The Republican intra-party war has started in earnest in upstate New York. The victor will determine the fate of the party, be it for good or ill. Thank goodness I left that party and became an independent.
