Obama Calls for Annual Science Fair: Achievement Should be Recognized like NCAA Championship Win

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: In order to show kids “how cool science can be,” President Obama announced today that he will convene an annual science fair starting next year. The winners of national competitions in science and technology will be annually invited to the White House as a congratulatory event equal to those, the president said, that are normally reserved for sports stars. “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House.  Well, if you're a young person and you've produced the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.  Scientists and engineers ought to stand side by side with athletes and entertainers as role models, and here at the White House we're going to lead by example.  We're going to show young people how cool science can be.” Today’s announcement came hand-in-hand with the “Educate to Innovate” campaign launched by the White House to increase the importance of math and science education in the classroom: with an initial commitment by the private sector of more than $260 million. “Students will launch rockets, construct miniature windmills, and get their hands dirty.  They'll have the chance to build and create — and maybe destroy just a little bit — to see the promise of being the makers of things, and not just the consumers of things.” The president said that for far too long the United States has lagged behind the rest of the world in developing young minds apt to math and science – and noted that during his trip last week to Asia he was struck by the difference. Obama recalled that President Lee of South Korea said his bigger challenge in education policy is parents that are too demanding, and the mayor of Shanghai said he had no problem recruiting teachers. “That gives you a sense of what's happening around the world.  There is a hunger for knowledge, an insistence on excellence, a reverence for science and math and technology and learning.  That used to be what we were about.  That's what we're going to be about again.” After his remarks, the President watched a demonstration of the “Cougar Cannon” – a device made by students at Oakton High School designed to scoop up and toss moon rocks. “As President, I believe that robotics can inspire young people to pursue science and engineering.  And I also want to keep an eye on those robots, in case they try anything,” Mr. Obama joked. -Sunlen Miller

Liberals have systematically demolished the school system and now want to pretend it’s someone else’s fault. What a joke!
How about praising all the companies that already do this instead of showboating and pretending only the government cares about the future of our kids?
Many companies such as Intel already do this – and have done it for decades.
“Founded in 1989, the Intel Foundation is a philanthropic organization focused on programs that advance education and improve communities worldwide. By providing funding for national and localized grants, the foundation helps fuel innovation in classrooms, empower women and underserved youth, and enables Intel employees to serve the needs of their communities. The goals of the Intel Foundation are to increase interest in math and science education, and to help develop a future workforce that represents the diversity around the world.” -Intel dot com

Is that a BCS championship win, or a March Madness championship win? Cause I need to know whether to boo.

I’d rather the government focus its financial efforts on keeping colleges and university education affordable for students with an aptitude for math and/or science.
Currently, the University of California system is having to raise tuition fees 32% to make up for budget gaps. UC schools are among the finest science schools in the country, and the fact that they are public- affordable- universities that cater to local students is a bonus to the state as well as the country.
Students will study where there are opportunities to excel. They don’t need bells and whistles.

B-b-b-but Bush invited Intel Science Talent Search participants to the White House, too.
The Intel Talent Search is self described as “America’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition — often considered the ‘junior Nobel Prize.’
“The competition encourages and rewards young scientists for the completion of an original research project and inspires them to pursue science in their secondary education and careers.
“An American institution, each year it heralds promise for our nation’s future.”
Finalists were invited to the reception for winners of the National Medal of Science.
According to one attendee:
They entered the White House through the front door (most visitors come in through a different entrance).
They had their picture taken with President Bush, and he spoke with them. He encouraged them to pursue their interest in science, congratulated them, and then shook hands with
everyone.
Afterwards, they saw the National Medals of Science and Technology awarded to their recipients, and President Bush recognized the students again during the ceremony.
Then, they were invited to the reception for the National Medal winners, and were allowed to eat in their choice of rooms such as the Green Room and Blue Room!
It was very cool!
Why does Obama always think he re-invented the wheel?

Shining a light on science, and particularly science achievements of the young is a good idea.

Even better when its coupled with some resources. Nice to see the private sector involved.

“Liberals have systematically demolished the school system and now want to pretend it’s someone else’s fault.”
How did liberals demolish the school system?
By demanding its integration?
By seeking more money for schools?
Higher teacher pay?
What about the “innovations” of prayer in school and forbidding the mention of evolution offered by the right wing?
They did not seem to have helped out math and science scores.

Kind of sad that you have to rely on a 2005 participant’s blog to find out about Bush recognizing these fine young people.
I also found a single photo of Bush congratulating the 2005 group as well as the 2006 group on the White House blog.

How did liberals demolish the school system?
Teachers’ Unions. Unions protect mediocrity. Jobs in education pay the same whether a teacher performs well or not.
The Boston Herald reports:
“(U)nion bosses are blocking at least 200 of Boston’s best teachers from pocketing bonuses for their classroom heroics in a puzzling move that gets a failing grade from education experts.
“The Boston Teachers Union staunchly opposes a performance bonus plan for top teachers – launched at the John D. O’Bryant School in 2008 and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates and Exxon Mobil foundations – insisting the dough be divvied up among all of a school’s teachers, good and bad.”

CNN reported on the visits but the press in general didn’t go wild over much of the beneficial programs the Bush administration promoted while in office.
Talk to the people in Africa. They loved Bush’s policies. Do you remember the CNN anchor getting schooled on Obama’s Ghana reception? He was gushing that it was unprecedented. The reporter in Ghana corrected him and said it was not “unprecedented”. Bush was given the same reception but that fact didn’t fit the left’s or CNN’s meme. (Some would say they are one in the same.)

The difference would be that Obama has pushed the improvement of science and math all during the election and into the first part of his presidency.
He’s emphasized it repeatedly and made it a priority.

So Bush made a major effort to push science acheievment and recognize it but the evul liberul media kept it hidden.
The right wing really believes its own bs.

The president said that for far too long the United States has lagged behind the rest of the world in developing young minds apt to math and science – and noted that during his trip last week to Asia he was struck by the difference.
Chalk that up to the incredible uselessnees of the Dept. of Education.
Since its inception, we have done nothing but play social experimentation with our public school system.
We have spent TRILLONS on the concept of “special Ed” in this country,…all so we can have untrained people making at best 15 to 18K a year being the ones who actually deliver the “services” on a day-in-day-out basis.
Kids are pushed thru the system year after year without having a a grasp on 3rd grade math fundamentals and we wonder why the croak & choke on standardized tests when the hit middle school.
The Dept of Ed is the single most useless dept in the federal gov’t. The best thing we could do to help education is destroy it and split its current budget up to the states for direct dispersal down to the communities.
It was absurd to see millions spent on special ed in your local school budget and NOONE would step up and present any advanced programs in math & science for those who had the obvious abilities to take advantage of that kind of opportunity.
Liberals will spend millions to get one feel good story and ignore the thousands of students who failed in the programs.

How did liberals demolish the school system?
Read up just a bit on your history! Go back and realize that all this came crashing down when liberla social enginners decided it was more important to play with a 8 yr olds ego and self-esteem than it was to actually TEACH.
Liberals kill the education process in this country when they decided one could “learn” without “failure”. That is was a bad thing to tell a kid they were wrong when they said 4+3=9 or when they spelled cat as kat.
The value of an A in a class was turned upside down when we decided that we would give A’s to special ed kids who did less than 1/2 of the work of normal students.
It became unacceptable to hold kids back even though the teachers and administrators KNEW the kids did not have the proper knowledge to progress and do the work required at the next grade level!

Yeah, but that “cool science” involves learning math, science terminology, concepts, formulas and other “boring” stuff that The One and others of the socially-conscious elitist class seemed to have passed on themselves.
But, it looks great on the tin!

Why is he reminding us that education is more important than basketball? Does ANYONE need to be reminded? The pres. that treats his citizens like a bunch of morons.
And the left wingers lap it up. Makes sense now.

This is great. It’s about time we started recognizing scientific achievement in this country. The anti-science, anti-intellectual groups seem to get stronger and louder every year. We need to turn that around if we want any progress to happen at all.

Maybe he needs to read the research on global warming…

I agree completely. The anti-science groups is demonstrated clearly by the ‘global warming is a hoax’ crowd funded by the oil industry.

tierra,it doesn’t matter who or what funds a scientific group if that group’s conclusions are correct. A scientific fact stands on its own-it does not depend on popularity or p.r.It never requires fraudulent data or collusion to support it.Experimental data will help prove a scientific fact, while absence of that experimental data will not support a conclusion.the greatest threat to scientific knowledge is when people stop questioning results-a tendency that is endemic in the Global Warming community.

Obama is correct. I have been saying this for years. Unfortunately engineers and scientists are not compensated enough to facilitate the desire to enter these very difficult fields.

Free market people and innovators and inventors do not need the government to stick their fascist hands in anything. The people in this country that have made everything in this world great, do things on their own. The sooner people REMEMBER those principles the better. The less that we have the cruel, taxing fist of government involved, the better our country is. American ingenuity is what it is because of individual freedom. We are stagnant because of the government. Government roles in free markets mean the collapse of our Republic. It’s simple..If you don’t believe in individual freedom and liberty, then you are a socialist/communist. No mincing words anymore.

Ryan_C,
WOw, just WOw tells me you have ZERO insight into the way education is really applied at the classroom level in this country now.
Time to wake up son and stop looking at the world thru your liberal glasses.
It is way past time to throw out ALL this BS that liberals have poisoned our education system with.
If your best is a ‘C’ in a class, so be it. We do not need EIPs and other make em feel good strategies to make a 12 yr old who is a ‘C’ stundent somehow think they got an ‘A’ by only doing 1/2 the work of the rest of the class.
Ryan, you may not like that approach, but when its carried all the way through HS and these graduate and hit the very, very competitve job market, this BS has done them NO good!
