Obama on Health Care Reform: ‘This Is Our Moment’

ABC News' Rachel Martin reports: President Obama made an 11th hour pitch to Congress today, urging members of the House to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill. He made a rare personal appearance on Capitol Hill this morning and then later on in the Rose Garden, he repeated his message to Congress. “I reminded them that opportunities like this come around maybe once in a generation.  Most public servants pass through their entire careers without a chance to make as important a difference in the lives of their constituents and the life of this country.  This is their moment, this is our moment…This is our moment to deliver.” But delivering health care reform, at least in its current form, is still an uphill battle. There’s no Republican support for it in the House and divisions within the Democratic caucus over abortion funding that could jeopardize it altogether. The President alluded to the opposition in his remarks in the Rose Garden. “No bill can ever contain everything that everybody wants,” he said, “or please every constituency and every district.  That's an impossible task.  But what is possible, what's in our grasp right now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000 Americans continue to lose their health insurance, and every year 18,000 Americans die because they don't have it.” The President again promised that the legislation would guarantee reform that’s “fully paid for” and would reduce the long-term federal deficit. Republicans aren’t buying it. There were protests again today outside the Capitol and GOP lawmakers railed against the bill as an “affront to freedom.” But it’s not just Republicans who oppose the House bill – some Democrats are on the fence. A major sticking point has been abortion funding. Some anti-abortion Democrats have said they can’t support the bill unless it explicitly prevents federal money from being used to offset the cost of abortions. Democrat Bart Stupak has proposed an amendment that would clarify the language in the bill and potentially get anti-abortion Democrats on board with the health care legislation. That amendment will come to a vote today. A full floor vote on the health care reform bill is expected sometime tonight.  Democratic leaders insist that when the time comes to call for a vote – they’ll have the 218 they need to push it through.

It’s a good thing Obama stayed on script because you know he was really thinking—This is My moment!

Yes, it will be an important difference to the lives of their constituents — the constituents who, polls have shown, are against these half-baked bills — by adding taxation and debt to them and their children.
When has government EVER done something better and cheaper than the private sector?

What does Obama mean by “our”?
I think he means himself and Pelosi.
The majority of Americans do not want PelosiCare.
Let’s face it–it’s about their legacy.
Americans are worried about jobs and the economy and those two are thinking of themselves.

Better grab as much power as they can and socialize America as fast as they can.
Their power will be gone in 2010.

I don’t know why people are so anxious to give health insurance companies the right to continue to rob their patients. We elected Obama and the Democrats to do the job, and now the Republicans are crying. You lost, we won. Get over it.

My children were supposed to receive the H1N1 vaccine yesterday at school. They didn’t. Ya know why? Because there isn’t enough to go around. This is just a taste of what government run healthcare would be like. Obama PROMISED to be a bipartisan president. On election night he vowed that to those who did not vote for him … “I am your president too”. So I wonder — why does he think he has a right to now CRAM this healthcare bill down everyone’s throat when ALL polls .. let me repeat that .. ALL polls have come up with the same results. The American people do NOT want this bill passed. I thought those in Washington were supposed to be there as REPRESENTATIVES of the will of the people. They are on another planet — saying they are doing this for all of us. And those of you who get on here and back this bill — do you even know what is IN this bill? You might want to go to gop.gov — click on Pelosi’s healthcare bill and then read the executive summary. You may be very surprised what you find out. It’s important to always know what you are talking about and what you are defending — because I don’t care what party someone says they are — I care what they play to do TO or FOR this country.

We should all keep our cool and put things into perspective. We know that Mr. Obama is one of worst President we’ve ever elected. But there’s currently no one, especially Mrs. Palin, who is better than him.

Extending unemployment benefits. With the latest extension, an unemployed person can get benefits for up to 99 weeks, or more than two years.
Health care. The new bill, with a proposed (versus actual) tab of $1.05 trillion, is expected to pass the House perhaps as soon as this weekend.
Fed pledges to keep rates low for “extended period.” Money for nothing, helping out the banks at the expense of the savers.
Home buyer tax aid credit extended. Sure, why not?
Fannie May implements a Deed for Lease program. Homeowners facing foreclosure can remain in their homes by signing their underwater mortgages over to Fannie Mae, and by agreeing to lease the property for a period, with a payment of no more than 31% of their income. It’s a win-win – the former homeowners get to stay in their houses, and Fannie Mae gets to own even more bad loans. What a deal!
The FDIC allows banks to carry underwater commercial loans at pre-crash values. A commercial real estate crash would be so untidy, it mustn’t be allowed. Therefore, with a wave of its magical wand, the FDIC is allowing banks to carry loans on their books at bubble valuations, even if the underlying properties have fallen by 40% or more. Call it extend and pretend, or fraudulent accounting… the net result is the same: zombie banks that won’t lend because they know that, in time, the piper must be paid.
Senate passes climate change legislation. Damn the torpedoes, and damn the ultimate cost to industry and consumers.

It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, and medication somehow think that we can afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, medication AND a government bureaucracy to administer it.
It’s like the Twilight Zone…somebody wake us all up. 2010 and 2012 just cannot come fast enough. The socialist power-grab between now and then still may be more than we can repair in two generations but I’m willing to work at it ! I’m so very tired of the broken promises and zero transparancy.

Even if the House passes the bill it still has to work it’s way through the Senate…it will be a goner! This bill is unconstitutional and if passed will be challenged in the courts and that is why Obama is eager to get another lib on the Supreme Court bench!! Have no fear…the Dems are done in 2012!!That is, if Acorn stays out of it!!

Isn’t funny those who have jobs, homes & medical coverage are the one’s that are complaining? I’m one of the lucky one’s, I have a great job with medical insurance that covers my wife, 3 kids & myself. If anyone gets sick all we do is call our doctors and make an appointment pay our $20 co-pay and see the doctor.
But just have a need for a MRI, surgery, or any thing that requires to go in the hospital. Then that’s when the fun begins! That’s right, the insurance company decides what medical services you really need. They do is try all the can to deny coverage for treatment a doctor orders. Get sick, loose your job have pre-existing health issues, what do you do?
But then again to the right wing, tea party, conservatives anti-healthcare reform gang it’s all good. They’re suppose to believe in god and be true Christians and live by the bible. I’m not a religious person, I lot my faith years ago as watched the very one’s using god and the words of the bible to justify their hate and bigotry for their fellow man.

I DO NOT GET IT! BY ALL ECONOMIC MODELS ANYTHING OVER 10% IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS CLASSIFIED A DEPRESSION, NOT A RECESSION. SO WHAT IS THE ADMINISTRATION DOING TRYING TO PASS A EXPENSIVE HEALTH BILL IN TIMES LIKE THIS. IT APPEARS THE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO TAKE TOTAL CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE. SIMILAR TO THE EARLY KREMLIN DAYS OF THE SOVIET UNION. WHAT IS TAKING PLACE IN WASHINGTON COULD RESULT IN A VERY DIFFERENT FORM OF A GOVERNMENT SYSTEM THEN WHAT WE HAVE HAD SENCE THE BEGINNING OF AMERICA. THIS IS NOT GOOD AND MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO FLOURISH. IT MUST BE EXTINGUISHED.

forced to buy health care insurance, isn’t that a crock? I have lost my job, lost my insurance, have custody of 3 of my baby grandchildren, barely making it now, and they expect me to pay for insurance or be fined? If I had the money to pay for health insurance, I would have it, but instead I go without, because I prefer to keep a roof over our heads, and food in our stomachs, because as grandparents raising grandchildren, you don’t qualify for any type of help. Now lets make the people who worked all their lives to have a good life give it up and move out to the streets. What is our country coming to?

Stop and think for a minute that private health care insurance companies generally realize a 2% profit annually. Now here comes the government telling private health care how to run their business or should I say to run themselves out of business. If the liberals care so much for the people they would partner with Private Health care to hammer something out that can work and not break the back of the economy. Tell me after they take 500 billion from Medicare/Medicaid, which hardly pays for anything now, how are seniors on a fixed income going to afford their supplemental insurance which will no doubt triple (what one meal every other day now..and that isn’t cruel??). One last thought…did you notice that Pelosi’s bill allows congress to have private health care..hmm I guess not good enough for them to go on the public option…so whose the fool?

The Job Report: Another month, another drop in payrolls. Will it ever occur to our leaders in Washington that what they’re doing isn’t working — and may actually be damaging our economy? News that the unemployment rate jumped to 10.2% in October, its highest level since 1983, as the economy shed 190,000 nonfarm jobs, underscores the spectacular failure of the so-called fiscal stimulus to stimulate anything other than economic misery.

A British view:
In a sign that the Obama honeymoon truly is over, I began to hear this week the first stirrings of a wistfulness about Mr Bush. “I never thought I’d hear myself say it,” one Democrat told me. “But Obama makes you feel that at least with Bush you knew where he was on something.”

From the Telegraph UK on Obama’s remarks about Ft Hood.
“Completely missing was the eloquence Mr Obama employs when talking about himself. Absent too was any sense that the president empathized with the families or the comrades of those murdered”.
I didn’t vote for Bush. But when he teared up due to a sad event he was crying with us.

tierra – I don’t know where you get your numbers, but everyone is pretty much in agreement that MOST Americans do not want Congress to pass this bill. That’s why so many Democrats are having a hard time committing to it. They know that the people they represent do not want it & they don’t want to be voted out – yet they are being pressured by Pelosi & her crew to vote for it. Otherwise, HR 3200 would have been voted on back in the summer.

From the 9/11 Comission:
The President was seated in a classroom of second graders when, at approximately 9:05, Andrew Card whispered to him: “A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack.” The President told us his instinct was to project calm, not to have the country see an excited reaction at a moment of crisis. The national press corps was standing behind the children in the classroom; he saw their phones and pagers start to ring. The President felt he should project strength and calm until he could better understand what was happening.
The President remained in the classroom for another five to seven minutes, while the children continued reading. He then returned to a holding room shortly before 9:15….

Only the yokels still believe he knows what he’s doing.
Everyone knows that the debt with which he has saddled the country–and with which acknowledges he intends to saddle it henceforth– simply cannot be repaid.
As the current debt instruments come due in ten, fifteen or twenty years, how will the government pay them? What, pray tell, is the yokel’s-eye view on this fundamental question?

I should say “ten, fifteen AND twenty years.” The debt instruments are already outstanding. Each must be paid by the government as it becomes due.
How will they be paid?

You can’t even supply the country with
enough H1N1 flu vaccine or for that
matter enough seasonal flu vaccine
and you want us to trust you with the
entire Healthcare System?
No Way!
Listen Up and Listen Good!
We the American People don’t want the
government messing up our Healthcare
System.
We want to keep what we have.
We want Tort Reform.
We want portability and we want to be
able to buy insurance across state lines.
We want those citizens who don’t
have coverage but want affordable
coverage to be able to get it.
We don’t want citizens to be denied
coverage due to pre-existing conditons.
We don’t want a dictatorial regime
telling us we Have to Buy Health
Insurance or face a stiff financial
penalty even if we can’t afford it.
We do not want a public option.
That will only drive out competitors
of the government plan and force all

Finally if and your Party don’t
understand these things by now we
the people will make you understand

We need this health care reform more than ever. Each year more and more Americans can’t afford the high premiums charged by the private health insurance companies. Each year more insured folks find out their insurance won’t cover their medical bills, as the insurance companies use a whole bag of tricks to not pay.
Great speech by the President. I agree completely that the Dems should realize that the Repubs are coming for their jobs in 2010 no matter how they vote on this bill. May all Dems and those Repubs with a heart and soul vote for this health care reform. Tens of thousands Americans dying each year because they can’t afford health insurance is too many.

millie, it actually seems that the Blue Dog Dems chose the American people over the profits and excessive administration costs of private insurance companies.
Think about the $380 million that the health insurance industry spent in recent months to fight this legislation. Think about how much influence big money can buy. Take Sen. Lieberman and his wife and ask how impartial his decision is to fight health care reform. From Wiki, ‘Since March 2005, Hadassah Lieberman has worked for Hill & Knowlton, a lobbying firm based in New York City, as a senior counselor in its health and pharmaceuticals practice. She has held senior positions at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APCO), Pfizer, National Research Council, Hoffmann-La Roche, and Lehman Brothers.’
Voting yes on this bill is truly a vote for the American people, despite the vast influence of the health insurance industry. I admire all the representatives who vote for it, and truly hope we the voters support them and vote for them in future elections.

This latest news now requires the detrimental level of state control over individuals and groups which make up society and have the primary responsibility in this area.
The State can ensure conditions to ensure health care opportunities, but not directly ensure this right for all its citizens unless it controlled every aspect of health care and restricted the free initiative of individuals.

Posted by: tierra | November 8, 2009, 12:59 am 12:59 am

Amy, this is the most recent quote on how many Americans die each year because they lack health insurance:
‘WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Nearly 45,000 people die in the United States each year — one every 12 minutes — in large part because they lack health insurance and can not get good care, Harvard Medical School researchers found in an analysis released on Thursday.’
As for your statement that emergency rooms have to treat patients, that is true but that doesn’t mean the patient will be treated in time if he waits until it is an emergency. Illnesses like strep and pneumonia develop very quickly. And where does that leave the uninsured with cancer, heart disease or diabetes that needs long term treatments to go for their care? Think of all the diseases that a yearly check-up will catch and thus be treated before they can kill.
Think of the losses, emotional and financial being suffered by all these unnecessary deaths and you’ll understand why affordable health insurance is so important.

You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the ‘blame America’ crowd and deliver this message abroad.
You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer ‘wind mills’ to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use ‘extortion’ tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaugh’s, Hannity’s, O’Rellly’s and Beck’s who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.

By taking the Socialist idea of uniform healthcare and putting it in a Democratic society is like spitting on the Constitution, and saying everything our forefathers fought for was in vain.
By taking away my choice, you are taking away the very essence of my American heritage.
And Obama if you truly cared about the people of the country you are blessed to represent, you would care less about what the media thinks of you, and more about what the people think of you. When a bill passes and your public rating goes down by five percent, that’s a sign. when your egotistical self checks what people think of you on ABC, read this and know. Eventually the people will overcome.

At our national parks there is a reason they stopped letting people feed the bears and letting them into the garbage. They get dependent upon the handouts, increase their population, they start demanding it then become violent to get it. What do you think is going to happen when the demand for these government hand-outs are no longer sustainable or can meet expectations? Yes it is their day to naively feed the bears to gain their favor and feel good about it. We may recall that the public housing projects ended up badly. So will this ill conceived endeavor.

Obama and his cohorts should enjoy their day in history because they’ll be voted out of office in the upcoming elections. America is losing it’s liberty, it’s freedom that so many before us gave their lives for. Obama is turning America into a socialist state and it’s awakened many angry voters.
Obama is clearly dismantling our country piece by piece. There is no transparency to his administration. This health care reform bill is not the ultimate fix all bill that people think it is. You have to be uninsured for 6 months to quality for the government insurance. But wait, if you’re uninsured you’ll be fined or possibly sent to prison. Health care needs to be fixed now yet the bill wouldn’t give insurance coverage to anyone until 2013. While you may dismiss Palin’s death panel discussion, there certainly is a Health Commission to be created, which is to determine which diseases and treatments will be covered and to whom these services will be provided. Do NOT believe the politicians. Read the bill for yourself!

I believe this President is trying to ruin the United States and he has the House of Representatives being led like lambs to the slaughter. I hope the health care bill dissolves in the Senate. I hope someone is going to stand up for the People of the United States.

In fact they booted Republicans OUT of one seat and replaced them with a Democrat.Posted by: tierra | Nov 8, 2009 5:22:54 AM
You forgot to mention, that Owens lied to the people in the 23rd by telling them he will vote AGAINST the HC bill and what does he do????? That will be the only time they will vote for a democrat.

I can not believe that the USA has allowed this to go on. What has happened to the government we knew even 10 years ago. I think in 2010 it is really time for a change if not sooner. Want to make the people happy, get the impeachment process going.
