Our Trip to the DMZ
Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report: Before we left South Korea, we paid a visit to the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea, the world’s most heavily fortified border.
The DMZ is approximately 2.5 miles wide, and 155 miles long. It cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half.
Here we stand in the Joint Security Area near Panmunjeom. The blue buildings immediately behind us are where negotiations are conducted, prisoners are exchanged, and the remains of fallen soldiers repatriated. In the distance is North Korea’s headquarters. The blue buildings are built on both North and South territory. South Korean guards inside stand expressionless, wearing sunglasses so as to not reveal the slightest emotion. This guard is standing right on the border. And this guard is standing on North Korean territory.
You can read more about it HERE at the US Army’s official website. The US Army has posted some other photos at this Flickr site.

Not as photogenic as Buckingham Palace guards. Ray-Bans no match for bearskin caps.

I wish there were a way to put more focus on the human rights abuses that take place on the North side of the DMZ. Kim Jong Il benefits by closing himself off from the prying eyes of the world.
