Palin – Brooks: She’s a Joke; Ifill: Don’t Underestimate Her Appeal

Our Roundtable took up the question of Sarah Palin’s future in the Republican party.

David Brooks dismissed the idea that “this potential talk show host” could be the Republican Presidential nominee for, flatly calling her “a joke”.

Gwen Ifill said not so fast, “you can not underestimate the degree that women will be drawn to her story.”

George Will added that, “this is what happens in the vacuum of a third year out” from a Presidential election.”

Watch the Roundtable’s entire blunt assessment of Palin HERE:

Tune In: Barbara Walters sits down with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin for a five-part series that will begin airing on "Good Morning America" Monday, Nov. 17.

David Brooks needs to understand that his rudeness makes him look like the intellectual weakling.

Ms Ifill, as a woman, I could not disagree with you more. Down here in the trenches, it is the women who are especially turned off by Palin. As an Ivy League educated, Masters level professional woman, I am insulted and saddened that this woman is what the GOP considers acceptable in a female candidate. As details about Palin’s book emerge, I am certain that Mr. Brooks is correct. She is simply not a serious contender, let alone a person to be taken seriously. She appears to have the emotional maturity of a teenager and an utter disregard for facts and the world around her.

I resent the notion that Palin appeals to ALL women…I’m a woman and have ZERO respect for her… She was elected governor as the anti-candidate and didn’t even bother to finish her term “owed the the people of her state she claims to be concerned for”. Book deals and talk show circuits seem more important to her… yeah, that’s who I want in my corner when the going gets tough…the one who jumps ship!!!! I don’t think so!!!!

Wow, a talk show host and a joke. What an insult to all of those who gravitate towards her basic message of let us remember the individual freedoms that have led us to become the greatest nation. Her opinions are obviously dismissed by the great minds of DC and NY (David Brooks)but they resignate with this joke and may others. To call her a talk show host and a joke when you look at what she has accomplished in her life by her mid forties illustrates the arrogance of Brooks (who writes about what others like Sarah Palin actually do vs. actually doing something productive himself).

When Mr. Stepanopoulus and company become a part of the United States America, then I will take them seriously.

Brooks, exposing an irony that he is ill equipped to recognize, says Palin is a joke. Woodward, a man who used to be a reporter, continues the Palin bashing with “Americans don’t elect presidents based on a compelling story”.
Clearly Woodward believes that we elected Obama based on his vast experience while Brooks is watching Palin laugh all the way to the bank.
Seriously, these are the best people you can get for your roundtable?

Do not under estimate Sarah, I defy you to find another woman who can excite the issues as well, plus remain straight forward in her agenda, that is as sexy, and likeable.

Is Palin a nitwit? Yes. …But.
Given the fact that we have underfunded and overcrowded our school’s classrooms over the last 40 years or so due to fears and complaints about taxes, what do you expect?
People made a big deal about kids being taught things other than the “3 Rs” and yet you fail to see that teaching to pass exams isn’t going to be an improvement? The best equivalent that I can think of for the effect that NCLB will have on schools is the Cheshire Cat as it slowly disappears into its smile and then is completely and totally gone.
So how in the world do you expect people to be smart enough to see Palin for what she is at this point?

Posted by: jan | November 15, 2009, 11:45 am 11:45 am

The reason 62% of the American voters think Palin is not ready to be president, is the same reason 54% of the current American voters think Obama is not ready to be president…neither is qualified. At least Palin has not proven herself unqualified.

A woman is in her 3rd month of pregnancy and the baby she is carrying dies. (These things do happen.) However, if Sarah Palin, had her way, this woman would not be able to terminate her pregnancy because that would be considered an abortin.
A 14 year old girl is brutally raped and beaten by her mother’s live-in boyfriend and becomes pregnant as a result. She too cannot terminate that pregnancy, if Sarah Palin had her way.
When Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, she permitted bars to stay open until 5 AM. When the chief of police objected because of the increase in DUI’s she fired him. Of course, permitting saloons to stay open until 5 AM, gives a lot of husbands more time to drink away their pay checks. It increases the likelihood of domestic violence. It increases the number of sexual assaults. But as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin, made rape victims pay for their own rape kits, so that sexual assaults really became a form of municipal revenue.
Is this what the women of America want??? If so, maybe I should invest money in a company that produces padded coat-hangers. If Sarah Palin gets elected, that will become a thriving business.

Talk about a joke! David Brooks is a joke. The liberals on George’s panel (which by the way, has a secret crush on sarah) are scared to death of Sarah Palin. For Brooks to insinuate that Barack Obama is out there facing the war in Afghanistan is laughable. Obama is out there rockstaring it like he always does. Sarah Palin has more experience in being Mayor of Wassila! Such a condesending panel, even Gwen Ifil was ridiculous. They are so insulated in the beltway, they have no idea what we think out here in America.

Posted by: Paula | November 15, 2009, 11:59 am 11:59 am

Ivy League educated, Masters level professional women are apparently not perceptive enough to recognize, much less understand the enormous appeal Palin has to blue-collar and home-oriented women, to mention two significant demographics. Then, there are the men, the Republican strategists who do, and plan to employ it. Like it or not, you underestimate Palin’s political potential at your peril. Even if she does not run for office ever again, she is a formidable campaigner who will draw like Oprah when the conservatives trot out their contenders. And those constituents could care less what Ivy League educated Masters level trench dwellers think.

Posted by: Ellen Sander | November 15, 2009, 12:04 pm 12:04 pm

While I’m not sure Ms. Palin is ready for the white house just yet, I do believe she does have the blue collar, every-day-American’s best interest in mind. She is more in-tune what is going on in our country than all of the people at your roundtable put together. It amazes me how self-important and all knowing you people seem to think you are, yet have no clue about what is happening in our country. Leave Sarah alone and start realizing that the fantasy-world you live in in Washington DC is not the world the rest of us deal with every day.

Let’s cut to the chase, David. SHE’S HOT and EVERYONE knows it but HARDLY anyone wants to ADMIT it publicly. Even you want to throw in something about “issues.”
HOTNESS is Palin’s APPEAL.
She’s not saying ANYTHING that INTELLECTUALLY inspires or arouses anyone. It’s all about her HOTNESS.
Once we admit that, we can agree to disagree.
Personally, I don’t think she’s presidential material and I think at the end of the day, David (BROOKS, that is) will be right and the Republicans will turn to someone else (not Mitt “Mormon” Romney) to lead the party. Sarah’s Minnesotan voice will not win the day. But she’ll cash out nicely.

Posted by: Tell the Truth | November 15, 2009, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

Gov. Palin has had so much more executive experience than David Brooks, Barack Obama, etc. She actually understands how to make important decisions within a reasonable amount of time. She exemplifies and holds dear the convictions and beliefs of many conserative voters. I would say that the “elites” could not nor will be able to understand her appeal. She is far from a joke. I haven’t taken David Brooks seriously for years now. He’s the ultimate moderate!!

Posted by: Concerned Houstonian | November 15, 2009, 12:24 pm 12:24 pm

I really have to wonder about the passionate, and vocal, condemnation the left heaps on Sarah Palin. Personally, I don’t have a strong opinion of her politically, but I can say that based on what I’ve seen, she would be a great neighbor, and in any concievable election she would come out as the candidate most voters would ‘want to have a beer with’.
Voters prefer people they understand, not stiff academics, folks married to billionaires, or career politicians.
In the last election, Gov. Palin was on the ticket as VP, not President, and the Republican candidate picked her, not the rank & file members of the party. The only group talking about Palin for POTUS are the Democrats, and why would the Republican party look to them for advice?

Your guest are missing the mood of the country. The bank bail out, car bail out and all the funny business in Washington is causing a mood I have never seen before. Going Rogue is exactly what this country needs right now. Not only in politics but in journalism. Wake up. Get out of Washington and talk to the people.

Has Palin talked about the economy, jobs, national security,or foreign policy?I would prefer these topics be discussed instead of the topics of the past. Also,I want to know how her mothering for her baby has been since she was put in the spotlight. Her stance on family values are to be questioned with her trotting around the country.I am sure the democratic leaders of this country smile every time Palin opens her mouth. If she wants to be a part of the national political scene she should throw her support to a Republican that can give Obama a run for the money in 2012.I hope Senator Mcain realizes he has created this monster for the republican party.Palin is a joke at the expense of all Americans concerned for the welfare of the United States.

Considering we’re only 9.5 months into THIS administration, I think it’s hilarious that there’s already so much speculation. My guess is that her book will make her less, not more, viable as a Prez candidate. I’m sure the book will be a great and entertaining read for those who both love and hate her and there will be plenty for both the left and the right to have some fun with. Whether she’s trying to position herself as a 2012 candidate, I don’t know and honestly don’t care.

Posted by: Debbie Gomez | November 15, 2009, 1:08 pm 1:08 pm

Palin currently appears to be an intellectual lightweight without the temperament to lead anything more than trust fund oil state with few people. If this is a false impression, she could counter it by giving interviews anywhere to anyone or doing a great job in as a governor (or Senator, see Hillary Clinton’s successful transformation into a iron handed wonk over the last few years), but she doesn’t. At this point, Palin is a punch line – the McCain campaign went for a poster girl rather than a woman with real chops like Kay Bailey Hutchison. And women across the board were justifiably appalled.

Posted by: jhw539 | November 15, 2009, 1:11 pm 1:11 pm

I disagree with Gwen Ifill and actually think the few who are drawn to palin aren’t because of gender but rather because of her religious beliefs (even if obviously hypocritical on those) and ability to lie about issues and personally attack those she disagrees with while at the same time playing the victim.

I find it interesting that so many people who speak about “the common man” in these debates seem to hold the idea that there is some innate superiority to the common man of the U.S. compared to the common men of other countries. What has made our country great is the decoupling of opportunity from class, allowing the uncommonly gifted to rise to whatever level they can achieve through hard work and perseverance. By increasing the number of people who have educational and financial opportunities, we wound up with a larger group of people who were able to realize their unique visions and in the process lift our country to new heights of innovation and public well-being.
By definition, there is nothing exceptional about average Americans. What is exceptional about our country has been that we have not hamstrung ourselves by dismissing the potential abilities of large swaths of the populace. Recognizing the rare and unique abilities of certain individuals, which come would term “elitism,” and providing them with the educational and financial resources to realize their potential is what has made this country great. We try not to strictly assign opportunity based on ancestral status. We have never done a perfect job of this, just better than countries with a more firmly established class system.
Disappointingly, the current trend seems to be to dismiss those of exceptional abilities the way we have previously dismissed claims individual superiority based on one’s parent’s social class. I fear that in a generation the attitudes that helped us achieve our current status in the world will have been undermined to the point that we will be stuck reminiscing about the U.S.’s former greatness, rather than reaching for the stars which previous generations saw as our nation’s birthright.

Well, Gentlemen, I think you will be very surprised to see the Women of this nation, as Gwen has intimated… ban together under Sarah’s capable and proven leadership! Gentlemen, you just don’t realize what you are doing by egging us ladies on! Watch what is coming!!! Then we will see just who ‘the joke’ was played on!

I watched this round table discussion this morning, and every one had something negative to say about Palin. At the same time, every one of them was dead wrong about Obama too…so I am not impressed with their elitist opinions.
Those of us who are living in the reality of the America Obama is trying so hard to create are huge Palin fans. Palin represnts to us the America we know and love and long to save…
As the media and leftist bloggers attack her, her record in Alaska shines for itself. That’s why she had a 90% approval before running with John McCain.
If she runs in 2012, she has my vote.

“the McCain campaign went for a poster girl rather than a woman with real chops like Kay Bailey Hutchison.”
I live in San Antonio and Kay is my senator. I can absolutely tell you that Kay Bailey Hutchinson is not what any party needs. She is a pseudo conservative who represents a very conservative state. As for me, I would rather have Palin as my senator. I would also rather have Palin as my president rather than the “bow to every foreign leader” clown we have in office today. Until the Democrats pick a sensible candidate, Sarah Palin may indeed become president.

Posted by: Monique | November 15, 2009, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

This was more of a pigpile than thoughtful analysis. Palin has flaws but serious commentary would take into account her many accomplishments and popularity prior to her selection as VP nominee. She fought corruption, slashed budgets, and was on better terms with Democrat legislators than her own Party. Obama had accomplished virtually nothing and was extremely partisan. The media trashed her religion while suppressing Obama’s relationship with a hate spewing and anti Semitic preacher. It was despicable how these highbrow-ed pundits either observed passively or joined in on the trashing of her family while completely ignoring the corruption in Obama’s background. Hello Rezko, Blago. How many “researchers” were assigned to dig up dirt on Obama or Biden’s children? BTW how about some balance on your roundtable. Brooks spends more time trashing the GOP and supported Obama so he can hardly be considered a conservative.

Posted by: Victor Kreeger | November 15, 2009, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

After four years of Obama, America will beg to have a president like Sarah Palin. Whether that is Sarah herself or another candidate that shares her appreciation for common sense conservatism it does not matter. The real desire for “hope and change” will be to reverse the destruction caused by our current president. Obama has been an utter failure. Obama has prven himself to be inept, self absorbed, and just plain in over his head.

Posted by: Craig | November 15, 2009, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

Many of the “common” man letters come from people who have never gotten out of the American frontier. Somehow this idea that the GOP represents some “Chevy truck” commercial is asinine. Going to college used to be the goal and dream of every family. Now, thanks to ignorant people like Palin, GW and pretend non intellectuals in the GOP, the common people have taken this anti-intelectual, ignorance is bliss notion to heart. If someone in this teabag throng can’t understand the simplest complexity, it’s those damned intellectuals that are ruining this country. Back to the agragrian life, with shotguns, and religion, and no taxes. And there are people like Charles Grassley egging them on, to create an even more pararnoid and fearful population of education haters.

Palin has got mojo. That’s why she can sell millions of books. That’s why she gets everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, fired up, one way or another. She had an 85% favorable rating as governor by Alaskans. She can take names while she’s kicking butts. Go Saraccuda!

Posted by: Java Joe | November 15, 2009, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

If Governor Palin is a joke, why is there an orchestrated smear campaign to discredit her? Why is her book a runaway bestseller and why are there so many stories about her?
The America-hating leftists of the Democrat Party and their media lap-dogs are scared to death of her. Remember what they said about President Reagan. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.

Posted by: Java Joe | November 15, 2009, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

“Romney is an excellent candidate for president. If I were a left-wing lunatic”
That is why the media continues to try to rehabilitate Romney and attacks Palin at every turn. Romney is one of them. He believes what the elitist in the media believe. He is in other words the perfect candidate for David Brooks. You know, the David Brooks who marvelled at the crease on Obama’s pants. The same David Brroks who though Obama should be elected because he could cite the works of a little known author, who know doubt, was a little known author because his ideas were universally viewed as just plain wrong.
Sarah Palin might not be perfect but if the choice is between Obama and her then she is close enough.

Never have understood all the controversy and hatred directed at Sarah Palin. She had the misfortune of being asked to run with McCain, she is out of office, never had an effect on the lives of anyone on this board or nearly everywhere else, and yet she garners more national invective than anyone I have ever witnessed. What on earth is up? Leave her alone and she will just be like any other talking head out there. What is the matter with you vicious morons?

Posted by: cecil91 | November 15, 2009, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

Sarah Palin will create a shriveled up GOP. A party so far right that more and more Republicans will leave the party, leaving you “birthers” and “death panelists” to the same fate as the Whig party. Many of the writers in these bloggers hate Obama, and just can’t get over his election by an OVERWHELMING majority of Americans. Yes she is fodder for the media, because of her ineptness she is an easy target. Don’t mistake titillation for political buzz. She’s nothing more than a “tabloid” personality. Amount of newsworthiness doesn’t equal popularity. She proved that as she dragged McCain down to utter defeat as she captured headlines about her wardrobe.

Posted by: Harry | November 15, 2009, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm

“she garners more national invective than anyone I have ever witnessed. What on earth is up? ”
The reason they attack Palin is the same reason they attacked Reagan. They realize that is she does become president she, like Reagan, will fundamentally alter the political winds.
The attacks on Reagan were never as bad as what we see against Palin but they were pretty pervasive.
Michael Reagan “I believe I saw my father reborn” – Spoken about Sarah Palin after her speech at the Republican convention.

Posted by: Jenny | November 15, 2009, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

Harry said “Many of the writers in these bloggers hate Obama, and just can’t get over his election by an OVERWHELMING majority of Americans”
His OVERWHELMING majority has already left him. Only 42% in the latest Rasmussen poll believe he deserves a second term. The American people have concluded that he LIED during that campaign when he said he would govern as a moderate.
Funny, you think Palin will shrink the Republican party because she is conservative; yet, Obama is destroying the Democrats among moderates and independents (approval among that group is at 40%)and you use him as an example for what to do?

Posted by: Jenny | November 15, 2009, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

Sarah Palin a Ronald Reagan? Oh sure.Let’s see now, Foreign policy experience:looking out her window to see Russia. Telling McCain aides that Africa was a country. Trying to BS Charles Gibson that the Bush Doctrine was some sort of domestic law. Explaining to Katy Couric that Russian air traffic has constant flghts over Alaska(Putin looks down form his plane)
Don’t think Reagan ever suggested that Jimmy Carter was a terrorist and a traitor or whipped up right wing hatred against Carter at his political rallies. And by the way Ron Reagan has bit of a different view than his right wing brother Mike. He thinks, as many Americans do, that Palin is an absolute joke. So does Nancy.

Posted by: Harry | November 15, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

Jenny. You quote Rassmussen? A right wing conservative pollster? Yes turmoil has left Obama with less than great enthusiasm on his poll numbers, but like Reagan, if you want to talk about Reagan, his likeability still remains very high. People like him,but they want quick fixes in 10 months, that took GW eight years to destroy our economy, and our foreign policy. People are impatient, but they like him. The numbers are more of a reflection, a snapshot of discontent in this country. He will turn things around next year, and his poll numbers will soar. Then Jenny, you will find something else as a negative about him..right?

Posted by: Harry | November 15, 2009, 2:20 pm 2:20 pm

Harry, your whole post consists of left-wing talking points. If you really want to stop Sarah Palin from becoming presidnet you will need to do better. Those attacks have failed.
As for me, I am proud to say I support Sarah Palin:
1) Sarah knows you cannot spend your way out of a deficit
2) Sarah knows that you cannot attack businesses with higher taxes and still expect them to hire new employees
3) Sarah knows that Ronald Reagan was correct when he said “Any government that is big enough to give you everything is also big enough to take it away”
4) Sarah knows that the US has 1.3 trillion barrels of proven domestic oil reserves that if tapped could radically improve our economy and reduce middle east radicalism — if the government would simply get out of the way.
5) Sarah knows that putting the government between the people and their doctors will benefit no one.
Sarah knows — Obama does not

I’m not saying that she stands a chance to be president…she has proven to me at least that she can’t and couldn’t handle the job…she’s a quitter, she did a disservice to her state by resigning. Resigning on the basis of media bias is a poor excuse…she’s proven that when the going gets tough that you quit, that’s what I call a prima-donna!

I don’t know who David Brooks is and I am not certainly interested of hearing his opinion from sports to politics. As for who is qualified and who is not of being a president or a senator, it would be nice to have some standard testing. Ironically, we test folks to get the driving license but not to hold the public office. I am simply concerned that the people who end up in the White House or the Capitol Hill are not at par even with mid range management of a very average private business. If we ask the politicians to disclose Tax Returns, they should also make their college transcript fully available and undergo basic standard testing before taking public office.

Posted by: H1N1hysteria | November 15, 2009, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

No class, Mr. Brooks. “She’s a joke”, he says. I was shocked that even Ms. Ifill advised him not to underestimate Ms. Palin. Most Americans these days have little interest in what leaders in Washington have to say or what letter is behind their name. We will observe your character and the way you act when you think we aren’t watching.
It’s a new dawn in America and Palin may not be the leader who brings us back from the abyss, but she may be part of the catalyst that saves us. Combined with our distaste for Obama’s over-reaching agenda and Mrs. Palin love of country, her presence may contribute to a rennaisance of American pride that leads us to select leaders who don’t think their country is “fundamentally-broken”.

I can’t believe that people would take Sarah Palin seriously. She is so stupid, mean spirited (in the name of Jesus, of course), and ignorant about the world. I have traveled extensively throughout the world, and in every country I went to during Bush’s reign I was asked who voted for him, since they have never met anyone from America who actually did vote Republican. My reply has always been that the people who would never travel to a third world country, those middle “Americans” are the ones to vote for Bush, McCain, Palin, etc, as they are the ones who are afraid to leave the country. Yikes….

True, as a woman, she can have appeal to the gender, but just because she’s a woman does not mean she is appealing to *every* woman out there. Women are diverse in opinions as men are, so to believe in a ‘one size fits all’ mentality will not work with women overall.
This is why I shook my head when Palin complained last year on why she couldn’t get *all* the women on her side or something around those lines. One can not expect every woman to vote for her just because she’s a woman.

LOL at the liberals, they will not have a clue as to what has hit them.
I see the usual suspects are out bad mouthing Governor Palin, not to worry though, they ain’t seen nothing yet. Palin the williwaw is about to be unleashed out of the northland like a force of nature upon the political world and, few in the lower 48 know anything about the overwhelming power of a williwaw. On a calm sunny day, out of nowhere, a williwaw can wreak havoc and destruction upon the unwary, demasting their ships in thought to be safe harbors and heeling them over to sink into a watery grave.

The more the media and these self-appointed “intellectual elite” like David Brooks trash Palin, the more I support her. People like David Brooks have great contempt for anyone west of the Hudson, unless, of course, they attended an Ivy League school. These are the same types of people who trashed Ronald Reagan, a graduate of Eureka College, until Reagan became successful, at which point all of the East Coast “elites” jumped on his bandwagon. I support Palin wholeheartedly. The real joke is the Ivy League socialite mentality.

Ifill is wrong. “Women” are not drawn to Palin’s story. SOME women are, but most of us have better sense than to trust our future to someone without the intelligence or the temperament to follow through with her obligations. The whole shopping spree thing was pretty tacky too. Could she have tried any harder to perpetuate a stereotypical female in a shopping frenzy? Go home Sarah.

**Jim Fitzgerald says “let us remember the individual freedoms that have led us to become the greatest nation. Her opinions are obviously dismissed by the great minds of DC and NY (David Brooks)but they resignate with this joke and may others. ”
What I think he means is that her opinions resonate. It seems like a minor point but it illustrates a larger issue. We have become a nation of followers who use words that we can neither define, nor spell but we use them anyway. Palin is just such a leader, speaking in a circumlocution that is confusing even to her immediate supporters. An anti intellectual who balks at the mainstream media and used a co-author on her book, she advocates for media “fairness” and eschews Katie Couric for “gotcha journalism” when in fact what really seems to irk her is that SHE is the one being “gotten” in the gotcha.

this woman is an embarrasing moron. The fact that she is taken seriously shows how ignorant our people have become. She is uneducated and greedy, just check her record in Alaska. During the VP debate, she was incompetent, and did not even understand VP powers when asked. How sad that some folks considered her for the position! I guess this was the tea partiers that own halliburton stock and profit from death and lies.

Anyone who would vote for Sarah Palin to be president needs to be committed to an insane asylum. Palin couldn’t stand the stress of governor for a full term and quit! She’s just plain intellectually unfit for that job. And, she’s nothing but a limelight seeking narcissist.

David Brooks represents only a small portion of conservative intellectuals. Most conservatives, especially, the Limbaugh/Hannity listeners certainly do not share the same view, and they are the voting majority on the Republican side.

Posted by: panabiker | November 15, 2009, 6:40 pm 6:40 pm

The joke is Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid. The American people consist of those on the left, those on the right and a chunk in the middle that are not enamored by hard left or right idealogy. The democrats have overreached with their socialist idealogy. The American people will rectify that in 2010 and 2012. Will it be Sarah Palin? I don’t know but she has reasonable appeal to the middle as well as the Republican base so its possible since she is a welcome relief from Obama/Biden.

Posted by: Jon Samuel | November 15, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

The fragmented pane that republicans now have as a constituency is uninteresting to them. Males have proven way too ideologically inflexible at times, fickle at others. The true threat of Palin lies in the notion of the republican party being able to repaint itself as some sort of champion for the issues of CONSERVATIVE women. For this she need not demonstrate that she’s electable but publicizable. If republicans can convert this idea into just 10 or 15% of the womens bloc then she is well worth the guffaws that come with her. But the downside is that to improve on that gain to any degree means a fundamental shift in their platform. Otherwise they paint themselves into the same old idealogical corners and wait for the next charismatic nationalist to dig them out. Too bad. With a little work and just a hair of vision (a little futher than the end of her driveway per se) she could have truly been a contender.

Brooks is no conservative and I have severe doubts that Will is either. Sarah Palin resonates with the average person but maybe not country club elitist republicans or t.v. commentators. People like Palin for her sense of honesty which average politicians do not have. Palin does not believe in abortion and neither does the average person so take that Brooks and Will and add McCain, Graham and many other RINO republicans.

David Brooks has fallen for the media’s destruction of Sarah Palin. All of those who call her names the way David Brooks did…are afraid of her. Let’s face the real REALITY. Beauty is an asset in America, except in politics. It’s difficult for some people to take a woman as beautiful as Sarah Palin seriously unless they are liberal beauties, like Angelina Jolie. Barack Obama was the chosen one so his failings were largely ignored.

Palin has written extensivley about all the important issue of the day in a manner that is more compelling and supported with facts than any other Republican or pundit. Read her facebook postings and editorials before making the uninformed statement that she is not focused on the issues.

Sarah Palin was and will always be unqualified for the presidency as was Barack H. Obama. They both lacked experience. In fact, as frightening as it is to me, I think she was probably more qualified, but less intellectual. I don’t doubt that she appeals to a small group. Why that notion sends liberals into a hateful spew that I once attributed solely to republicans, I don’t know? She is not in danger of being President. I wish the media would tell us about the people who are.

Posted by: Joanne | November 15, 2009, 9:50 pm 9:50 pm

Clinton isn’t being honest here. In September 2008 Clinton and Palin were scheduled to speak to a protest outside the UN on Iran. Clinton cancelled when she found out Palin would be there. She was reported to have said I am not going if that woman is going.
I can’t stand Palin but this also shows the lack of honesty from Clinton.
Just like running for President again. When asked Biden says I am not ruling anything out while Clinton can’t give a straight answer.
Everyone also knows that she wants nothing to do with having coffee with Palin. Just give a straight answer for once.

Posted by: jason | November 15, 2009, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

A recent poll showed two percent of americans thought Palin should be president.
Palin has no support in the republican primary.
Liberal journalists talk about Palin so much just to hurt the GOP.
Palin has a negative -30 favorable rating among women.
McCain made a mistake. Get over it already. Just like Edwards and Qualye were mistake of VP picks. Enough already.
Palin would have no chance in a GOP primary. The northeast states are winner take all.
Palin will never run for president because then she would have to face the public. That is why she didn’t run for governor again because she knew she would lose. Running for president and getting crushed would cause her to lose her saint sarah appeal with her fans.
But for people like ifill and chris matthews that think she could seriously win a gop shows how they think rank and file republicans are zombies and how much disdain they have for republicans.
Gop primary voters voted for mccain who limbaugh couldn’t stand. Moderstaes still control who comes out of the gop primary. several hundred delegates are for winner take all northeast states that palin can’t win. The primary is designed to keep out the palin’s.
Also this obsessive focus on palin is only done to hurt the gop in the polls. Liberal journalists don’t talk about kay bailey hutchison, murkowski, republican attorney general ayotte running for senate in new hampshire.
No the liberal journalists will milk palin for all it is worth to hurt the gop in the polls. The liberal journalists create news not report reality.

Posted by: jason | November 15, 2009, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

To amy the gop doesn’t consider Palin as the female candidate.
90 percent of the GOP doesn’t want her as their pick for president.
She was never voted in by the GOP.
She was picked by McCain’s staff of four who are not out of politics. This lie that the GOP wants Palin is a lie. She wasn’t voted in. She was picked by a few advisors who made a mistake. . Get over it already.
John Edwards is a narcissist and was picked as Kerry’s VP because edwards had a youthful look. But dems get no heat for that mistake.
People make mistakes enough already. If mccain had won Palin would have quit right away as VP and you would have had a moderate in mccain as president instead of a far left liberal in obama.
The republican candidates in virgnia and new jersey that just won wanted nothing to do with Palin coming to the state.
The media loves to make up reality to hurt the gop.
All you ever hear about in the media is palin, palin, palin, palin.
The media loves it because the media is obsessed with hurting the gop.
The media will never let palin go.

Amy, as a top private Tech college graduate, with a grad school degree in Chemistry, I realize how hard it is to realize that the average American does measure the “serious contenders” in the same way that highly educated people do. Please be aware that for many of them, they’ll vote for Palin because she’d be more fun to have a beer with in a bar than, say, Olympia Snowe, Hilary Clinton, or other women who actually know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, people who have no grasp of the facts and no apparent incentive to study things in detail are often “serious contenders”. Hopefully, Palin won’t be one in a few years, but it’s a frightening possibility.

Posted by: WoMan | November 16, 2009, 1:08 am 1:08 am

I have lived in Alaska for 40 years. Palin quit and people are relieved, Being part of a national circus did not address the issue of Alaskans in these times. Palin was all good intentions while she was running but didn’t deliver nothing but ethics complaints. Our legislators did the heavy lifting. Palin was always the victim. Nothing was her fault, things just happened to her. I felt sorry for the people of the upstate NY district that Palin interfered with when she supported a conservative Republican who did not live in the distict and knew nothing of the local issues. I felt that if these people did vote in Palins “choice” anyway they would be stuck with what we got, a state involved in national politics that our local issues were not addressed and it they were it was not by Palin. I am happy for those voters, they voted to represent their issues and not sacrifice themselves for the national stage like we did. They will never know what a better choice they made.

I am a woman and a conservative and I am quite certain that Sarah Palin is NOT suitable for any public office. And no, she has not proven herself capable of effective leadership however she is a first class rabble rouser. To intimate that my gender should inspire me to support her is ridiculous. Should the Republican Party find itself desperate enough to attempt to run her in 2012, I’ll be pulling the lever for the Democratic candidate–once again.

When you refer to individual freedoms, remember it was Pallin who lobbied by robo calls for people not to vote for someone she did not like who she says does not have her values. What exactly are her values…certainly not taking care of her family. Or, fullfilling her obligations to her state…what are her values….making money? She charged Alaska for every little thing and then had to pay it back. She showed no loyalty to the Mc Cain team who in effect made her…she could not even pick an original name for her book and used the “rouge” Mc Cain often called himself…so what are her values? Certainly, not a sense of responsibility. She is a lady with good looks and a little bit of knowledge and that is a dangerous thing. Hillary wants to meet her out of couriosity. This proves the point people get by on their looks not their qualifications…it is a fact..look it up.

The REAL joke is that a “shockingly unqualified candidate”, a do nothing – accomplished even less – junior senator is currently sitting in the White House with the tacit help of David Brooks. So offended was mr. Brooks over Palin’s selection for VP at the time that he threw his support to a far worse candidate for PRESIDENT – one BHO. Brooks maintains that Gov. Palin is a joke? Really mr. Brooks – LOOK IN THE MIRROR!!
In the meantime, the guy mr. Brooks supported is proving every single day he’s in office that the JOKE is on us. Obama may be intelligent (I stress may be) but his actions thus far have all been immature and stupid. He glossed over the economic crisis by throwing (away) three quarters of a billion dollars on PelosiReid’s ‘get Democrat’s elected’ in 2010 give-a-ways believing the economy would pretty much bounce back on its own, so he could pursue every ultra liberal progressive program his heart desired – all at the same time. (See how smart he is.) No. Obama has classic adolescent invincibility syndrome.
But reality has a way of bringing supposed supermen to the ground and today’s reality is that Obama and his chosen economic team doesn’t have a clue. The Pelosi/Reid/Obama fake stimulus program was not designed to produce long-term jobs. In fact, the debt this piece of crap legislation has added will be a long term drag on creating jobs. While the bulk of the money will be spent in the 2010 election year and will (technically) keep growth in the black, the jobless rate will not change. Furthermore, once all the goodies are dispensed and the last of the $787 billion is wasted away, the economy is likely to go back into recession. Thanks mr. Brooks for you keen insight, but I think Senator McCain and Gov. Palin would have taken a much wiser approach to the economy, let alone a more reasoned approach to international affairs.

Posted by: PhilG | November 16, 2009, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

To what story is Ifill referring? Palin’s life story? Her “hard road” to public office? And why she would assume that thinking women identify with Palin in any way other than gender?
Ifill’s comment is similiar in philosophy to McCain’s reason for selecting an unqualified individual as a running mate – any female will do. We need – and should support – qualified women candidates for public office. McCain could have chosen Olympia Snow or Kay Bailey Hutchinson as a running mate, and I would have been proud of his choice. I wouldn’t have voted for him, but I still would have been proud. Instead he chose someone who is vacuous, rigid, frighteningly ingorant (and proud of the fact) and childish. In short, he chose a female George W. Bush. For McCain to assume then or Ifill to assume now that “sisterhood” somehow trumps qualifications is insulting to all American women who want to succeed because of their abilities and accomplishments, not their propensity for winking.

Posted by: Ro Abbott | November 16, 2009, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

You know Ro Abbott you are at least half honest. You at least admit that no one McCain could have picked would have earned him your vote.
But your logic is torturous. On the one hand, you did not and would not have voted for McCain (who is qualified to be president) no matter what – and as an added bonus because he picked someone (Palin) you believe to be “unqualified” to be VP you got to be ashamed of him too.
And, you would have still not voted for McCain if he had picked someone you believed to be “qualified” to be VP, the only difference is you would have been proud of him?? While!
On the other hand, you apparently were proud to vote for an unqualified candidate (Obama) for president. You don’t see the ridiculousness of your position do you?
Well perhaps when economy is still struggling 2 ½ years from now due to Obama’s lack of effective policies and leadership you will find the other half of your honesty.

Posted by: philg | November 16, 2009, 1:00 pm 1:00 pm

This tells it all about Palin’s appeal.
“As an Ivy League educated, Masters level professional woman, I am insulted and saddened that this woman is what the GOP considers acceptable in a female candidate.”
I realize this puts you, Amy, in Michelle Obama’s league, but I tried to read Michelle’s Princeton Thesis, and if that’s an example of Ivy League women’s intelligence – you just ain’t that smart .

Posted by: jay | November 16, 2009, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm

I take issue with David Brooks calling Sarah Palin a joke, especially since he doesn’t explain why he’s come to that conclusion. Why is she a joke? She’s a successful Governor who did a good job in Alaska. She has more experience than Obama did, which is becoming evidently clear ten months into his administration. I really think that this “joke” assumption is something that is understood and accepted as fact in the salons of Washington and Manhattan.
As much as I respect and faithfully read George Will, Peggy Noonan, and other beltway pundits who are Palin critics; their opinions reinforce my belief that the old ways of Washington and the workings of both parties are out of touch with the American people who are turning to outsiders (dare I say mavericks?) like Sarah Palin. It only increases her appeal to me.

Posted by: Steve | November 16, 2009, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

If all of you would have invested as much time on Pres. Obama to find out where he stands and what his credential are, which are NONE, we might have been better off. But then you can’t stand a woman, thats why you hated Clinton. The left and the Obama admin is so afraid of Palin, that they still have people in Alaska looking for anything.

they can’t spell or write a coherent sentence.
Palin has no chops; what she says is trite and boring.
I would hope the Republican Party can conjure up someone with a little more acumen than Palin.
Is an uneducated housewife now the model of what we want as President of the United States of America?
If you are so intellectually ‘lazy’ that you can’t even spell or write or speak, it speaks volumes about how serious you will be on solving complex issues.
I don’t agree with everything Obama is doing, but, at least I know he is giving his choices deliberate analysis, unlike Bubba Bush, who made a mockery of the presidency.
