President Obama Speaks to Fort Hood Commanding General

In the Oval Office just now President Obama was briefed on the phone about the shooting at Fort Hood by the Army base’s commanding general, Lt. Gen. Robert Cone.

The president offered any assistance he could provide.

“We know this is a tremendous tragedy down there,” the president told Gen. Cone, according to a White House official. “Our thoughts are with you and all your soldiers.”

The president has been monitoring the situation in the Oval Office with John Brennan, the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, and Denis McDonough, and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Actually A tragedy is defined as : a disastrous event. A tree falling on a child is called gravity. When speaking of insulting those who died, surely you are referring to the lack of any real investigation into 9/11 (the commission was anything but) and the failure almost 9 years later of bringing the criminals who planned that attack that killed 3,000 American civilians to justice.

What I am upset about is the fact that our President felt it was more important to thank everyone for putting together his important meeting before saying anything about our soilders in Texas. What were they thinking?

Someone please teach Obama how to address a tragedy.
You don’t start with giving shout outs and finishing up other business first.
My prayers are with all of the victims and families in Fort Hood.

Um, Tyler, according to the video I saw using the link on this page, that is NOT how the President handled the issue.
Where are you getting your information?

TonyJ- you can’t do links here, but the tape above doesn’t start at the beginning of his remarks.

I was rebuking a post that the moderators have seen fit to remove; now is not the time to make any political points except to make clear that both sides of the aisle stand opposed to murder.

My thoughts are with everyone at Ft Hood, and with their families. How awful.

No event is too solemn for the right wingers to take the opportunity to demean the President?
Show some class yourselves.

Apparently you are seeing the edited version. The first 1:30 of the original is Obama acting like nothing happened in Texas.

The unedited version of Obama speaking about Ft Hood was very surreal.
It was as if nothing had happened.
Obama giving shout outs, the crowd cheering and yelling. Obama bragging about his staff.
And then he began to talk about what happened in Texas.
I couldn’t believe how disrespectful it was to those who were killed.

Obama was speaking as part of a forum today on Native matters. He quite properly gave his closing remarks to the forum and then went on to address the incident today as a separate matter.
That YOU treat it with so little respect attempting to gain political points – and make jokes about it (see BHO’s comments below) is appalling.
Grow up.

Compare Bar. Obama’s unedited speech with the speech by President George W. Bush on 9/11. Is this what we wanted when we voted? They tried to warn us 6 months before we voted. Obama is Commander In Chief of our Nuclear Weapons and of the people who died on Fort Hood. Did you know that?

Different magnitude of event without any doubt, but are you talking about President George W. Bush’s continued reading of ‘The Goat’ story when informed of the disasters? Magnificent.
You asked for a comparision, you got it.

Hey, Tyler, I will go with you. Obama is no more a good speaker. So many American have already realized how Obama’s speech without THE PROMPT SCREEN becomes easily nightmare.

Obama to Commanding General of Ft. Hood: ‘ . . . our thoughts are with you and all YOUR soldiers” ? ? ? What in the world is he thinking? Hasn’t anybody told Obama that he is the Commander in Chief and the “YOUR soldiers” he is referring to are all willing to sacrifice their lives for him under his orders?

The least Obama can do is take some ownership for SOMETHING about this country. Makes me wonder if he really is a US Citizen.

When the Federal Bldg in OK was bombed I recall Pres. Clinton taking ownership of the situation and immediately stating: “You will pay”. Obama’s lukewarm statements about this shooting don’t seem like he’s too concerned about justice here. Obama can take a lesson or two from Bill.

You silly fool, Clinton did not have anyone in custody . . . his was a stern warning . . ‘We’re coming to get you”.
In this today’s situation, the man was already in custody. There is no need for swaggering or ‘We’re coming to get you’. We had already got our man. The guy was already in custody.

Somber moment indeed.
“I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It’s good to see you.”

Obama hasn’t said anything about JUSTICE, full prosecution of the law or anything. They guy’s in custody – duh, and Obama needs to show the world that he is a true Commander in Chief by vowing justice for the men HE is in charge of.

Sheesh, the President of the United States doesn’t even know the difference between a military post and a military base?

Right wing carpers and whiners proving they have no idea of how to conduct themselves with some dignity and respect and honor troops, but lots of ideas about how to badmouth a President day in and day out.

Spare us your holier than thou attitude!
You were probably cheering troop deaths in Iraq like Senator Chuck Schumer–who considered each one putting the Dems one step closer to control of the Senate.

I realize he was scheduled to visit soldiers at Walter Reed late yesterday, and then he was to meet with Secretary Clinton, and this morning he’s to meet with the people on The Hill over the medical care bill…but why isn’t the President at Fort Hood yet? He could have gotten on Air Force One and made a really important visit by now…he could have met with Secretary Clinton on Air Force One and taken her with him to Texas. Lots of choices. He travels SOOOOO much (too much) around the country when he wants to push his agenda. A respectful, quick trip to Fort Hood seems to have been in order. It’s pretty much too late by now.
