Republicans Seek to Impose Purity Test on Candidates

The purity vs. pragmatic debate within the Republican Party appears destined to continue into 2010 as a party resolution makes the rounds prior to the January RNC meeting in Honolulu. My colleague ABC News’ David Chalian has more.

Watching the Republican National Committee over the last several years pour money into the campaigns of moderate Republicans such as Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chaffee, and DeDe Scozzafava, some conservatives are concerned the GOP needs to start backing up its principles with its cash. When the RNC gathers for its annual winter meeting in Honolulu, HI in January, national committeeman James Bopp, Jr. of Indiana plans to get a vote on his proposed resolution for Republican candidates to pass a purity test before receiving any direct funding from the national party. “Republican faithfulness to its conservative principles and public policies and Republican solidarity in opposition to Obama’s socialist agenda is necessary to preserve the security of our country, our economic and political freedoms, and our way of life,” reads the current draft of the proposed resolution which has been distributed to committee members for consideration. “The purpose is to assist in reestablishing the conservative bona fides of the Republican Party by putting our money behind conservative candidates who will govern as conservatives,” Mr. Bopp told ABC News in an interview. “Certainly, it has been a concern of many of us that the Republican Party has been losing support among conservatives because of the actions of some Republicans on spending, deficits, earmarks, and bailouts.  And every time we support a liberal Republican, our effort to restore trust that we will govern as conservatives is damaged,” he added. The proposed resolution establishes 10 key public policy issues and states  that a candidate who disagrees with three or more of the 10 positions, “as identified by the voting record, public statements and/or signed questionnaire of the candidate, shall not be eligible for financial support and endorsement by the Republican National Committee.” “We are endorsing Reagan’s unity principle, if we agree 80% of the time, you are a friend, not an enemy,” said Bopp. “I appreciate where people are coming from and the desire to make sure we are a cohesive group,” RNC member and Bush 41 adviser Ron Kaufman told ABC News when asked about his reaction to the proposal. “However, we’ve also been the party of states’ rights.  That is a binding principle.  I’ve always believed that people in Massachusetts shouldn’t tell people in Indiana or Mississippi on who the candidates should be.  There is nothing more fundamental than that in the party,” Kaufman added. Here are the 10 policy positions in the current proposal: (1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill. (2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare. (3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation. (4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check. (5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants. (6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges. (7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat. (8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act. (9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing, denial of health care and government funding of abortion. (10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership.

“oppose Obama-style government run healthcare.”
I would love to see the Republicans come out so honestly for the elimination of Medicare. Get it out in the open and lets debate it.

It is now abundantly clear was indeed a visionary man when he warned our young country against forming and joining political parties. Thank I am an independent voter!

Claptrap! Events both past and present has proven that the rich and powerful promulgate rules for the masses while they stand above them and put them to use in order to persecute others.
I see nothing different here with these “purity” rules. Does anyone remember McCarthy?

Funny, there is no mention of education anywhere. So is it now 100% true that the republican party is more concerned with whether I have a gun, marry the right gender, and keep all the money in the wealthiest pockets rather than educate the next generation?

James Bopp lives in a very simple and very delineated world. Imagine espousing the rule that “if we agree 80% of the time, you are a friend, not an enemy”. Those are my options? 80% agreement or ENEMY? yikes! I can’t help but wonder if he applies this rule to all aspects of his life…if he has teenage children then he has enemies!

7 is none of our business unless the US is threatened.
8 & 9 are religious based and have no business in politics.
I guess I support a majority of their issues but I still fail their 80% test.

Does anyone remember how the Democrats threw Joe Lieberman under the bus in an attempt to enforce Democratic ‘purity’?
DeDe Scozzafava received the nomination and backing of her party.
Lieberman did not receive the nomination or backing of his party.
You wanna talk about a party enforcing ideological purity?

Only funding Conservaties in elections is a good thing for America. The conservative principles is what America was founded upon. Democrat’s took control of Congress in 2006 while our economy was strong. Now look at it-10.2% unemployment. You can’t blame Bush for that.

If this is a purity test for Republican politicians, I say, God have mercy upon Mr. Bopp and America! Yes, and also, I ask God Almighty to have mercy upon the whole wide world! Yes, this purity test makes the Founding Fathers shake in their graves. Just take a look at number one for the fun of it and ask Mr. Bopp this question: Smaller as against what? Yes, the same old Socialistic/Communistic and Imperialistic government, but only half as big? The present true National Debt is now over 100 trillion dollars, so, keep it down to about half of what it is now? Yes, now lets take a look at the word, lower! Yes, cut the defecit to about half of what it is now? And of course to add injury to insult, to cut taxes to about what?, in order to take care of the present National Debt which was created by both parties alike over many decades. This fellow Bopp needs to have his head examined real quick! Yes, I mentioned the Founding Fathers so lets hear their comments: “No pecuniary consideration is more urgent than the regular redemption and discharge of the public debt: on none can delay be more injurious or an economy of time more valuable”. “Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty”. By George Washington. “The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, in the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale”.
“Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none”. By Thomas Jefferson. I rest my case as a staunch conservative Christian Republican, a legal immigrant of now going on 54 years, who soon fell in love with these young brave men of th past. I voted for Ron Paul, by the way. because he spoke for the Founding Fathers.

How much longer before Republicans are required to wear Brown Shirts and Jack Boots?

What a shame that republicans want to set this country back 50 years instead of moving ahead with the times. They are beginning to look and sound petty. Ever since Obama got in it’s like the Republicans are wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth and grasping at ANYTHING that will put them back into play. Their ideology keeps them stuck and will turn the party into relics if they don’t figure out a way to get with current issues.

I don’t believe Reagan would muster 80% of that list. Smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits? He fails all three in just the first position. (7) He made deals with terrorist Iran. Remember? (9) His wife Nancy supported stem cell research, didn’t she?

Kind of like the unwritten purity test the Democrats did to Joe Lieberman? The democrats have repeatedly marginalized him for not towing the radical liberal line. I smell bias reporting here.

A thought for Mr. Steele. If there was no diversity and freedom of thought in the republican party…you would not be president of the RNC. Now, you, of all people want a “purity” pact for all those who want to belong to the party. How is that bringing new thoughts and ideas to the party? Sounds like you are limiting freedom of thought and I feel the republicans have been small minded before..imagine what this pact will bring. Maybe you all need to wear the same type of clothing to let everyone know who you are. Thank God, I left before this nonesense began. I am now a free thinking Independent who supports President Obama.

So many voters get fooled when they hear the big three from their political choices. a) I’m anti abortion. A major lie. For 19 of the last 26 years a Republican, and the Republiarcons party have ruled the White House and the Senate. Bush, the most devout pro life President ever. Never got close to trying to undo Roe V Wade. With a hand picked conservative Supreme court, Bush never got close to changing the laws on abortion. Are pro lifer’s odds getting better or worse with Obamma selecting the next two Supreme Court Justices? B) I’m a Good Christian. IMO, you do not need to go around telling people you’re a good Christian. Acts far out weigh your words. c) I’m pro gun. Sure, so are the Democrats. The only difference between the two parties on gun control is that Democrats don’t believe a new set of golf clubs to a week end golfer is the same as an AK-47 or an M-16 rifle to a gun enthusiast. Beyond that, there is little difference. Both are collectors of toys. Both hobbyists have fun with their toys. Dem’s. assume sub machine guns are dangerous when placed into the hands of a true gun enthusiast. That’s wrong. Dem’s believe it’s automatic weapons in the hands of hobbyists is a danger to society. But collecting golf clubs is alright. That’s the difference, IMVHO. there is no difference.
Conservatives have been fooled by their leaders for over 30 years. This November, before you vote, check out your candidate and see how he voted on issues that concern you. I will tell all Americans that those elected officials that are som anti health care reform and a public option are looking out for their best interests. Not ours.
All of them have taken large sums of money from health care industry to vote against a bill that would be good for all Americans. Check it out. Start by Googling Grassly or Baucus, or Lieberman.
You’ll see why a Sen. like Lieberman claims HE WILL KILL Reform. Follow the money. Follow their key campaign donators.

oonogil,
Re: #8
How is opposing health care rationing and denial of health care ‘only a religious issue’?
Are you just a one issue (pro-abortion) person, and so you can’t see past that?

1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill.@@Smaller government. Maybe we just need a Dictator. Senators, Congressmen get to keep their jobs and bene’s. That’s a bill all politicians could get behind.
(2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare.@@Look at the mess the high cost, unaccessability, and free enterprise gone wild on steropids has produced. CEO’s whose mott is profit first last and always. Long reign the health care Cartel.
(3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation.%%%If you don’t believe the environment is in deep doo doo, them this could make sense. Other wise, not. IMO.
(4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check.@@Keep out the unions so major corporations can outsource the few remaining jobs still around in America. Bad idea charlie!
(5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants.
@@Good point, but needs to be dealt with cautiously. Some illegals have been in the country 20-30 years. They are productive members of society and their children and childrens children are American born. This issue definitely needs to be addressed.
(6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges.@@@So does Obamma. That doesn’t mean I agree with you, or Obamma.
(7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat.@@@You, me and the rest of the civilized world. How to do it is the issue. It would take a very strong World coolition, not just the U.S., Poland, Italy and Zimbabwe. Good point.
(8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act.@@@@Is adultry OK? Is ensign and the rest of the K-Housers alowed to break the laws of morality. or are they, as they believe they are, exempted from them?
(9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing, denial of health care and government funding of abortion.@@You are so wrong on this issue. No matter what the P/T employees ( Our elected officials) like Liberman and Grassly tell you. HCR is a must in order to avoid 20% of our pay checks going towards health care. America will go bankrupt if we do not do something now. P/T Senators like Lieberman, Grassly, Baucus, Boehner, and Cantor are misdirecting the truths. Their only interests are in wrested back the White House from a black man. If it takes telling lies, twisting the truth, scaring people, then that’s what they do. These named corrupted officials, and others have lied, mislead and sold their souls to the devil. Just for the purpose of keeping their CEO bosses from the health care industry happy and the campaign donations will continue to flow into their re election campaign funds. Follow the money. Google your Sen and Congress person. See for yourself if they voted for you or their corporate overlords.
Fellow citizens. HCR w a strong public option is the best possible choice for America. If you don’t believe what I say.
Look it up. It’s currently on line in a 547 page format.

(10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership.@@Well said!

Sometimes a half a lot is a whole lot. It depends on your own personal perspective. Religion is slipping in popularity. 25% of folks between 18-30 claim no affiliation with any specific religious group. Religion is just a means which allows a handful to control the masses. It’s power and money that motivates religious zealots. laws do not apply to these people. Check out K Street. Goodgle it. It will be quite an eye opener.
