Sen. Menendez: Undocumented Immigrants Should Be Able to Buy Insurance Through Exchange
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: The handling of immigrants — both legal and illegal — has threatened to snag Democrats’ health care reform efforts at several junctures this year. And on ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” today, Sen. Robert Menendez, a member of Senate Democratic leadership, said he’s still not satisfied with the way the Senate health care bill handles undocumented immigrants. “In my view, if they use their own money to purchase insurance without any taxpayer subsidy, it would make a lot of sense,” Menendez said, adding that when uninsured people use an emergency room, that becomes “a public charge that we would all pay for.” Menendez, D-N.J., said undocumented immigrants should be able to “use their own money to pay for an insurance [plan] under the exchange, but to be able to do so however and not receive any subsidy towards it.” “The Senate bill doesn’t allow that,” he added. “The Senate bill says that if you are a legal permanent resident, someone who came to this country — claimed by someone else and are here in a legal status as a US permanent resident — that you if you qualify, [you] could have access to the subsidy. There’s a difference between that person who comes in legally and is here under lawful presence and another [who does not have documented status].” Menendez is the author of a new book, “Growing American Roots,” that makes a case for the nation to do more to acknowledge its fast-growing Latino community. “I wrote the book because I’m tired of listening to a lot of talk show hosts who seem to have a problem with the Hispanic community in this country, and would paint us all as if we just crossed the border yesterday, when in fact the Hispanic community in this country has had a presence here since before the founding of the country,” Menendez said. “We have been patriots both in [the nation's] creation and it’s defense, we are a trillion-dollar domestic market place in this nation. And you can’t field a Major League Baseball team, or maybe look at television, without seeing us.” Menendez, the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, also said the figures from the Congressional Budget Office regarding the cost of the Senate health care bill will help in leadership’s quest for 60 votes. “Certainly the Congressional Budget Office estimates are incredibly important,” he said. “It shows that we’re going to reduce the deficit even more — that it’s fully paid for, that we will cover 31 million Americans more.” Watch the full interview with Sen. Robert Menendez HERE.

Possible Contraception Compromise in D.C.
Doesn’t he get it we are talking not about legal immigrants but criminal immigrants. We should off the usual sort of amnesty to this group stop the crime (i.e, leave the country) and then apply to immigrate.

How dare he talk commonsense! No rational arguments need apply when it comes to the foul scourge of illegal immigration. Don’t let them buy their own health insurance, it’s much better to treat them for free in ERs or make them more dependent on their (primarily Republican) employers.

No, No and again No. All illegals need to be picked up and deported. Not allowed to buy anything.

Is there something wrong with illegal he doesn’t understand, changing it to undocumented doesn’t make it legal. Save their money for a one way bus ticket back to Mexico.

A recent survey indicated that more than 700 million people throughout the world would like to move to another country. The most frequently mentioned destination – the USA. The illegals have depressed wages and forced unemployment on some of the most hard pressed American citizens. Afro Americans are among the groups most negatively impacted by illegal immigration. As the survey indicates making the illegals welcome is likely to make the situation a lot worse.

So, if an illegal immigrant wants to buy health care with their own money, that would mean they have to have a very good, decent paying job to have the money. If they are here ILLEGALLY, then how are they employed LEGALLY? Do they pay taxes? Are they paying into Social Security? Will they be required to show where their money is coming from to buy their insurance, and if so, will the person/business employing them be held responsible for employing an ILLEGAL immigrant? Will these ILLEGAL immigrants be able to sue a doctor and/or hospital if a procedure goes wrong? I’m just asking.

Not all illegal immigrants are Mexican but the word illegal is what no one seems to understand, and of course when the clintons and other democrats were caught employing them no idiot should try to blame it on republicans, but until we extend 287g so that police in the cities and the emergency rooms ask for your insurance forms to show you are not a law breaker it means nothing.

In Detroit the official unemployment rate is approximately 30%. Since the population of Detroit is now overwhelmingly Afro American it is safe to assume that the unemployment rate of Afro Americans is similarly high. Groups like Afro Americans are among those most severely impacted by illegal immigration (lower wages and higher unemployment). I am not making a statement about the relative worth of illegal immigrants and Afro Americans citizens. The latter are American citizens and it is reasonable to demand that public policy puts citizens ahead of criminal immigrants.

When an armed burglar gets into my house and threatens my family I have a right to kill him. When an unarmed burglar gets into my house then I can do little more than call the police or tell him to get out and leave the loot behind. Both have the intent to steal from my family. The illegal immigrants are like the unarmed burglar. The law says that if I harm him by forcibly throwing him out I can be sued by him or his family and thus the burglar gets rewarded. If I just call the police and have him arrested he gets off easy since he wasn’t armed. Only to find that he sneaks back again and again to steal from my family. The illegal immigrants are burglars that keep stealing from us.

What a country! Deport all illegals and secure the borders enforce the laws as written.Add 31 million to Health Care and cut cost is a pipe dream that doesn’t make a bit of sense.

Sen Menendez, is using some slight of hand here. Illegals would be using their own money but the problem is that the insurance would be subsidized by taxpayers. Now if you wanted to have a two tiered insurance system one for legal residence and another for illegals this might be more palatable.

Hey, be aware that those so called illegals also have Social Security Numbers and also pay tax, so they contribute to the subsidized insurance. Sen Menendez is right, let them buy the insurance with their own money. No big deal here
