Senators Sanders, Graham Debate Afghanistan

When it comes to Afghanistan it is pretty clear the political tables have turned for President Obama.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who usually votes with the Democrats, signalled on “This Week” that he couldn’t support the President’s troop increase:   “I have a real problem supporting 30,000 or 40,000 more troops and $100 billion more a year for that war on top of what we’re spending in Iraq,”

But Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is standing by the President.

Will enough Republicans join Graham to make up for the Democrats who won’t support the President on this one?

I have an idea on how we should pay for the war of Terror. Now grant it this is outside the box but I beleive that it is absolutely possible. Since this is a “GLOBAL” war why isn’t the entire world paying for the war. Yes I am talking about a Global War tax. We realistically can’t get any country to do there fair share towards the war effort. The main reason is because politicians want to be politically correct and politicians don’t want to give up there power. Well tax all countries for the war thus easing the burden on the US. I certainly can figure out how to make the tax fair and equitable to all countries.

I have a few fast comments that could probably solve several issues our country faces: Iraq, Afganistan (and Pakistan) PAY for each trooper engaged in instituting ‘stability’ in their country, at a rate of 110% of the cost to the American taxpayer- Iraq= OIL; Afganistan= total defoliation of all poppy crops, OR dedicaation of as much of said crops to the US (as they can find, or admit to- then defoliate the rest- the US could then supply the rest of the world with medical opiates, and stop junkies in this ,AND other countries> by providing for their habits without the need for crime. See multiple white papers on legality vs crime costs.;
AND- restrict Congressional (and other public figures) medical benefits to that of the general populace, such as Medicare and Medigap, AND restrict salaries to the national average, with the provision that retirement benefits WILL be stripped upon any felony conviction – and not be transferred to a family member, either.
Back to the real world, people- you get what you pay for, or SHOULD if you are a fellow taxpayer. That’ssss all for now, folkssss!!!

Senator Graham is a moron. These wars are immoral and illegal. I say let’s have Senator Graham and Republicans spend their own money for these ridiculous wars, and let teh rest of us chose to spend our money on our own healthcare reform and other needed projects.

The Republicans HAS no problem with creating Wars and NOT paying for them, while Screaming Deficits! The price of the Bush administration’s Medicare Advantage program to pad the pockets of Insurance Companies, and the WARS are part of the DEFICITS. They are a Joke. Hey Jokesters, take care of your own country. Are you forcing Soldiers to fight your “trumped up” wars for Healthcare for their families. Healthcare Reform Now.

A great way to control costs, is to pass the Public Option (which we desperately need), but just cover those citizens who are Democrats, and don’t cover those that are Republicans. I think we could save alot of money this way, then everyone will be happy. Also be sure to note that we have spent over $900 billion on these two illegal and immoral wars since 2001, which is more than teh healthcare reforms will cost us.

Since the 1970s the United States has waged a “war on drugs.” I think most would conclude it’s a losing battle.
Given this reality, what is the logis used to believe that in 1, 5 , 10 or even fifty years, we are going to be able to stabilize Afghanistan? I can’t imagine that an Afghan War Lord is going to give up his drug empire which provides an incredible flow of money, to plant spices, fruits and nutricious vegetables. People in the Ubited States have probably changed their drug use behaviors to some extent, but I think it is totally unrealistic to believe our way of life is going to prevail vs poppy and heroin economy.

travelertraveler: So I take it you are calling obama a moron as well since he has always said this is the war we need to be engaged in. In reality you are the moron who wants more entitlements and would be the first one complaining if your house was attacked by terrorists.

I’m going to call BS on Cokie’s assertion that Obama wasn’t “stuck” with Afghanistan because he called attention to the fact that it was bungled and said we needed to pay attention to it. Of course it was bungled. It should have been over years ago. And of course we should have paid more attention to it. However now it’s probably too late to make a difference. That’s not Obama’s fault. He definitely was stuck with it.

i agree with old traveler-t… only libs should get the public option and enjoy all the quality(?) healthcare associated with that (like public housing..). BEing a conservative, i can speak for the majority of my kind who say we dont WANT the publci option. you see we work for a living unlike the other side.. we have private health insurance which polls reveal miost americans are happy with. oh one more caveat, i refuse to PAQY for your health care… go out and get a job yourself to pay for this monstrosity. no thank you

The Typical “Unknowledgable” Republican: …………. “What!!!? We have to pay for this war? How come we didn’t have to pay for this under Bush?” (LOL)
Answer: Because Bush raised our debt to Communist China from $65 Billion (amount our debt to China was when Bill Clinton left office) to $740+ Billion (amount the debt to China was when Bush left office).
LOL…we didn’t pay for the two wars, we “charged” them. It’s the American way.

……………… LOL ………….. yeah, and being a republican, I wouldn’t expect you to be able to understand what the inflation rate of health care has been in the past 10 years (outpacing the overall inflation rate by almost 5%), nor would I expect you to be able to understand what that exceedingly high health care inflation rate is doing to our economy, and to the federal government.
You also said, “we have private health insurance which polls reveal miost americans are happy with.”……LOL……. Until they don’t have a federal government anymore because it went broke.
Yep… wouldn’t expect you to be able to understand any of that one bit… being that you are, “a republican”… LOL.

Next year we need to vote incumbents of both parties out of office for letting this country go to war in two countries without Declaring War and without a plan to fund it. If they had to Declare War like the Constitution states and explain how we were going to fund the war, we would have few wars. Americans would support necessary wars, but not these questionable wars like Vietnam and Iraq.

We shouldn’t be fighting a global war. We should be focusing on our own internal security and leaving the rest of the world to deal with themselves.

We need to give Afghanistan to our enemies so we can save some money.

1, I and many of my personal friends are Republicans AND we support health insurance reform. Stop acting like you know what everyone else thinks about the issues. Not all Republicans are mindless drones, just like not all Democrats are mindless drones.
2. I agree that we definitely should not be in Iraq…and told the President and my Congressional reps exactly that when they decided to do it. However, the war in Afghanistan was necessary when we attacked that country. That’s where the Al Qaeda training camps were and that’s where the Taliban government was who supported OBL and Al Qaeda. I think we have done all we can do militarily, so I think we need to pull out as quickly but safely as we can.

Unfortunately you are correct. The federal government does think it’s just fine to ‘charge’ costs by borrowing…and …borrowing…and borrowing some more.
Isn’t that what this administration is doing also? You didn’t think President Obama went to China just for some good MuShu Pork, did you?

Realman, I’m a Republican and conservative. But such callous remarks embarrass you, me and the GOP.
Have you not been reading the news? People don’t have jobs. There are no jobs to be had in many parts of the nation.
I have great insurance myself and would love to keep it. Cost keeps going up though, over 25% from 2009 to 2010.
We Republicans need to realize that there are people hurting in our USA. They need help and we need to help them.

If the war on terror is so important the entire world, let them worry about it. Russia just got a taste, they no longer can keep terror out of their country..Anty up – Just think if IRAN got a bomb – they would become allies with Pakistan and declare war of any number of countries they don’t like. Israel, India, who else. The bomb could be an interesting card to be able to play. While the only country that seems smart enough to realize the problems of terror, the other countries are not footing the bill. I am glad my kids know I am not in favor of all this government spending, so they don’t hate ME when I am dead.

We are in Afghanistan because that was where the 911 criminals were headquartered, Remember?
Several times, and it was documented, we had Bin Laden in our grasp, but the Bush administration dropped the ball, Remember?
At on time they even had his location at Tora Bora on December 16 2001 but failed to act on it.
At another time there was a private investigator from New York who went to Afghanistan and had evidence of his location. The Bush administration had the PI arrested and tried in the Afghanistan court. But the Afghanistan officials at that time kept telling the Bush Administration that the PI had accurate information.
The Bush administration ignored the findings and just wanted the PI hushed.
For 8 years the Afghan war became the neglected war and the Bush administration put most of their resources into Iraq due to the bogus Irania government report of WMDs in Iraq.
So whose fault is it again? Oh yeah the Republicans!
And what should we do now?
Put our resources back into the war we should had been fighting in the first place and get that job done!

You are one really funny person, do you live in america or just post your radical ideas hoping anyone might actually support them. It is funny how Republicans continue to act like Democrats do not work and are not patriotic. This is absurd.Every Democrat I know is hard working and very patriotic unlike the Republicans who are all about the PARTY and against anything that the Democrats are trying to accomplish no matter how bad the country needs it.

You are looking at the short term because Obama has raised the stakes that GWB took his eyes off in the first place. Given over time, there will be jobs when the financial crisis is fade away and the banks starts getting their house in order afterall they wrecked the economy with their drive for profits.

I found it ironic that Graham supports sending the military surge to Afghanistan however neglect to tell how to pay for it by offering the same old rhetoric: cut spending and then does not specifies where to cut.

these two wars are a complete and utter failure of foreign policy by the bush administration, obama is left to pick up the pieces of our economy and the war he inherited from the previous administration…if bush would’ve simply sat down talked to foreign leaders, and negotiated a boycott of some sort on these terrorist harboring nations forcing them to act…we would not be in this mess, obama cannot be blamed for the war. He is simply trying to fix it, and turn it the right direction.

Posted by: realistictothemax | December 1, 2009, 10:22 pm 10:22 pm

Obamma has neutralized the Republicans. If nothing else he is nanking his reelection hopes on being right on the call to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanastan. Spending money in a year when he is asking to spend almost a trillion on health care reform.
IMO, Obamma is a principled politician and is following through on most of his campaign promises. Reps who continually forced a Democratic House to supply them with more and more money omn a manufactured war in Iraq dind the tables have turned. Cheney, and and any other Rep that criticise Obama are going to have their criticism thrown back into their faces. Check who the War Hawks were. The Reps were the war hawks. They can criticise Obama all they want to, and they will. But, they’rs past voting records on war funding will show the Rebs for what they are. Obstructionists, liars, and just say no. Obamma has outsmarted them all again. Just like he is doing on healht care refrom. The Reps have no way of dealing with Obama. It’s like Bobby Fishcher playing a game of chess with a 5th grader. My money would be on Bobby. Cheney crtiticises Obamma for taking to much time to come to a decision. He accused Obamma of aiding and abetting a war criminal. That’s an act of treason. Cheney accused our President of being treasonous. I hope he can prove it. Next to Benedict Arnold and Quisling, Cheney is next on the list of the infamous. Are you Rep upset about the time table? It makes all the sense in the world. Obamma did not want to deal with this issue. BUSH/CHENEY left this over from their horrible 8 year run. Obamma came up with the best solution possible. Sometimes you have to pick the best of the worst. Like last call before no more alcohol and you’re dateless. Things will work out for America. We have the most principled President this country has had in at least 8 years. And possibly the smartest ever. So you Reps sudddenly turn into doves and blame Obamma, well blame hin for being Obamma.
Good Night. Sweet dreams.

Cheney always talks about how OBAMMA embarrasses America by apologizing and bowing LOW to heads of other country’s. Country’s where bowing is a sigh nof respect. Cheney always says how this weakens America. How our enemies are emboldened and this Obamma shows weakness by bowing. What the neuritic Cheney does not bother to mention is the friend and allies we gains by an American president literate enough to understand foreign customs. how Obammas behavior will bring support from country’s that were once our allies. until he and Bush took over and cow buoyed the rest of the world by shooting first, lying second and telling the heads of other country’s to go screw themselves. Like Bush did at his first KYOTO meeting. Cheney is a neurotic sycophant. . Both of them live in their fairy tale worlds and have no touch with the 21ST century or any reality but their own.

President Reagan showed the republicans how to cut taxes to the rich, just barrow the money for tax shortage, all that working people got since Hoover, came from the democratic party.
Afghanistan we are there to give the country the right to grow Poppies, when we first invaded the country the MEDIA said Taliban didn’t allow the Afghans to grow theme, why are we, USA greatest users. Assets are what wall street is after MONEY! we are not in Hatti, they have nothing but Poverty. Make this country great like China, Bring Our JOBS HOME, out sourcing is starvation wages for us if we as a nation’s so great make it at HOME, not overseas.

I am not at all happy about the continuation of the Afghan war. I particularly worry about the effect it will have on our servicemen, who are redeployed over and over again.
I will give Obama kudos, however. He inherited an absolutely impossible situation – and he has given a time-line for withdrawal. We need an exit strategy.
Bear in mind that Afghanistan is the graveyard for empires. That is Afghanistan’s one and only claim to fame (Except for the poppies.) The Soviet Union tried mightily to “win”Afghanistan, and look at the results.
The GOP armed the God-fearing, freedom-loving mujahideen, and we got the Taliban. With this record, what do you think we will “win”?
Obama stressed the need for Afghanistan to take responsibility for its own security. He also left the door open for negotiations with certain segments of the Taliban, a move many Afghans favor. For this, I give him kudos. His policy is really the only option we have.

I find it really weird that so many bloggers want a public option for libs.
They should take a lesson in California history. A few years ago, a state senator Sheila Kuehl proposed a single payer system. All evidence showed that a single payer system in California was the most cost-effective way of delivering health care to all Californians.
UTLA, the teacher’s union of the Los Angeles Unified School District, conducted its own study. They discovered that if LAUSD enrolled all its employees in a single payer system, LAUSD would save between $ 100 to $ 200 million a year. Needless to say both the LA Board of Education and UTLA endorsed a single-payer system.
Actually, no one is forcing people to enroll in a public option. I would enroll simply because I want my health care dollars to go to my healthcare, not to fund CEO salaries, lobbyists, stockholders, and politicians. That’s a choice that everyone should have.

Interesting that Sanders said Russia and China should be footing some of the bill for Afghanistan…last time I checked they weren’t the ones attacked on 9/11. Nice sense of responsibility there, but I guess that’s the new statesmanship.

The Afghan war will be lost and ineffective for the following reasons:
1) The Taliban and Al-Qaeda will be there long after the US leaves, not to mention, Obama told them when we are leaving…dumb. If we want to stop the taliban we need to invade the whole middle east, and every islamic country there is, if we are to use the white house logic (that is, keeping the Taliban and Al-qaeda from organizing a foothold in the territory we occupy).
2) We will have 80 to 100 thousand troops occupy a country almost as big as Texas. That number is pittance in the vastness of hilly good-for-nothing country.
3) How much does it cost again ? Oh, the estimate was 173 billion dollars in 2009 alone…Wow !! Get out your wallet.
4) How many body bags are we willing to gather for Obama’s war ? A war he called “a war of necessity”.
5) As long as there is Pakistan, we will never rid Afghanistan of the Taliban completely. They’ll migrate back over.
6) The country is corrupt from top to bottom (as the last election illustrated) Afghan soldiers will be incorporated into the Taliban after the US is gone.
Obama said:
” I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.
I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars. ”
Obama is guilty of doing everything he accused George Bush for.
