The $100 Million Health Care Vote?
ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports: What does it take to get a wavering senator to vote for health care reform? Here’s a case study. On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.” The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.” I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill. In other words, the bill spends two pages describing would could be written with a single world: Louisiana. (This may also help explain why the bill is long.) Senator Harry Reid, who drafted the bill, cannot pass it without the support of Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu. How much does it cost? According to the Congressional Budget Office: $100 million. Here’s the incredibly complicated language: SEC. 2006. SPECIAL ADJUSTMENT TO FMAP DETERMINATION FOR CERTAIN STATES RECOVERING FROM A MAJOR DISASTER. Section 1905 of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1396d), as amended by sections 2001(a)(3) and
2001(b)(2), is amended— (1) in subsection (b), in the first sentence, by striking ”subsection (y)” and inserting ”subsections (y) and (aa)”; and (2) by adding at the end the following new subsection:
”(aa)(1) Notwithstanding subsection (b), beginning January 1, 2011, the Federal medical assistance percentage for a fiscal year for a disaster-recovery FMAP adjustment State shall be equal to the following:
‘(A) In the case of the first fiscal year (or part of a fiscal year) for which this subsection applies to the State, the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the fiscal year without regard to this subsection and subsection (y), increased by 50 percent of the number of percentage points by which the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the fiscal year without regard to this subsection and subsection (y), is less than the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the preceding fiscal year after the application of only subsection (a) of section 5001 of Public Law 111-5 (if applicable to the preceding fiscal year) and without regard to this subsection, subsection (y), and subsections (b) and (c) of section 5001 of Public Law 111-5. ”(B) In the case of the second or any succeeding fiscal year for which this subsection applies to the State, the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the preceding fiscal year under this subsection for the State, increased by 25 percent of the number of percentage points by which the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the fiscal year without regard to this subsection and subsection (y), is less than the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the preceding fiscal year under this subsection. ”(2) In this subsection, the term ‘disaster-recovery FMAP adjustment State’ means a State that is one of
the 50 States or the District of Columbia, for which, at any time during the preceding 7 fiscal years, the President has declared a major disaster under section 401 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act and determined as a result of such disaster that every county or parish in the State warrant individual and public assistance or public assistance from the Federal Government under such Act and for which— ”(A) in the case of the first fiscal year (or part of a fiscal year) for which this subsection applies to the State, the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the fiscal year without regard to this subsection and subsection (y), is less than the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the preceding fiscal year after the application of only subsection (a) of section 5001 of Public Law 111-5 (if applicable to the preceding fiscal year) and without regard to this subsection, subsection (y), and subsections (b) and (c) of section 5001 of Public Law 111-5, by at least 3 percentage points; and ”(B) in the case of the second or any succeeding fiscal year for which this subsection applies to the State, the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the fiscal year without regard to this subsection and subsection (y), is less than the Federal medical assistance percentage determined for the State for the preceding fiscal year under this subsection by at least 3 percentage points. ”(3) The Federal medical assistance percentage determined for a disaster-recovery FMAP adjustment State under paragraph (1) shall apply for purposes of this title (other than with respect to disproportionate share hospital payments described in section 1923 and payments under this title that are based on the enhanced FMAP described in 2105(b)) and shall not apply with respect to payments under title IV (other than under part E of title IV) or payments under title XXI.”.

@Shane: You know, it’s funny; I never heard a liberal in my life seriously say he’d prefer to relax on government benefits and do nothing. Usually, it’s more like “those women are raising children on their own, we should support them,” or “medical care is so expensive that young people are pulling teeth out of their heads with pliers rather than pay thousands in medical bills,” or “maybe we ought to regulate the financial sector…”
It’s always folks with a right lean who seem to be so terrified of this prospect. It’s like they’re afraid that if it isn’t necessary to struggle viciously, all the time, to get such basics as “the ability to go to the doctor,” maybe… they’d go soft?

Do it then. If you think government cheese and housing is such a cushy life, do it.
Actually, if you look at the numbers from the Tax Foundation the majority of strong Red states are dependent upon Federal tax dollars collected/redistributed from Blue states – whose ‘wasteful socialist programs’ oddly correlate well with modern, vibrant industries that bring in a lot of federal tax revenue.

if every county qualifies, then what is the point of the provision? senate staffers aren’t paid by the word, there must be some reason they stuck that in.

here … let me fix that for you T —
Usually, it’s more like “those women are raising children on their own, somebody else need to be taxed more to support them,” or “medical care is so expensive that young people are pulling teeth out of their heads with pliers rather than pay thousands in medical bills, so somebody else needs to be taxed to support them because they can figure out how to budget and insure their car, but not their own body” or “maybe we ought to regulate the financial sector…because only some people are making money in it and people who can’t read contracts or calculate risks can’t figure out how to do it”
There … that’s more accurate…..

How many of those disasters were “every county or parish” warranted help?

jwh539, you could not be more wrong. It is not enough that a major disaster be declared somewhere in a state in order to trip the boost in funding, it requires that the major disaster be declared and that it is determined that “EVERY county or parish in the State warrant individual and public assistance or public assistance from the Federal Government under such Act.” How many times has that happened in the past 7 years? Certainly not 411 times.

Hey Chris Kromm, the bill’s language states that it only covers certain states, and “state” is defined as a state where “every county or parish in the State warrant individual and public assistance or public assistance from the Federal Government under such Act..” Only one state meets that definition in the last seven years, where every county in said state falls under the disaster relief act. Louisiana. The article is correct. Your link is incorrect. Read the above article’s language.

What a despicable piece of trash. Congratulations on making the list Mary.

If ABC had bothered to do a decent job of reporting, they would have described how the federal Medicare/Medicade contribution is calculated from a formula which uses resident income. As a result of the compensation payments for Katrina storm damage, Louisiana showed higher income growth than any other state, which means that our portion of the Medicare pie increased sharply. Of course, this “income” was really “insurance proceeds” intended to help people repair damage done when the federal levees failed. So this money is not a windfall.

I am in the business of dealing with the FEDs in disasters. In the last 5 years we have had as many disasters in our state. The key word is “public assistance” that means individuals recieve compensation. It is VERY difficult and VERY rare for the type of disasters we have, to affect sufficient individuals to qualify for individual assistance. Most money goes to repair roads, bridges, and assit local governments ect not individuals. This language is clearly written to conceal that most “average” disasters have litte or no public assistance. Make no mistake Lousiana would qualify but rarely in smaller States. This clearly is meant to benefit Louisana not most folks who suffer a disaster.

Instead of rushing this health care legislation through, why don’t we have a “national discussion” with “all” the facts and figures of “cost” and “effect” and then have a national vote on it? Or is it too much to ask the people who are going to be effected by it and have to pay for it to actually have a say on it?

My guess is her family gets a 10% finder’s fee. Her soul for $10,000,000 for a democrat, that is good math. Most of them sell out for a lot less than that. Everyone here in her district has made it very clear “WE DON’T WANT THIS!!!!!!” Mary, you will be absolutely responsible for every death associated with the health care bill should it pass. Anyone being denied coverage or treatments b/c it’s deemed too expensive or your too old to get it will be laid at your feet. You will also be responsible for putting your own state in massive debt for all of the unfunded mandates. I demand you drop your coverage to take the same, and if you cause a single death with this bill whether directly or indirectly, should go to jail for voluntary or involuntary manslaughter.

What’s new? Political payoffs were used on all recent federal legislation. If it is illegal for candidates to buy votes, how can it be legal for Congressional leaders and this administration to use our taxes for political payoffs? It cannot continue. Congress and this administration have already broken the national treasury and spent future generation’s income.

Look at what “affordable” housing did, it caused the price of housing to skyrocket. Look at what “affordable” college did, it caused the cost to go to college to skyrocket (see what is happening at UCLA, 32% price increase). Look at what “affordable” health care will do, it will cause the cost of health care to skyrocket and/or services to be cut. When the governemnt gets involved prices go up because they are subsidising the costs. Taxes go up!! Who pays taxes those of us who are working our butts off to make a living. I want to keep the money I make and purchase the things I want, when the government takes more from me it leaves less for me to purchase from those that I would buy from. Well, just tax the rich corporations?? What happens when you do this?? They pass the “tax” on to you who purchase their goods and YOU pay it. WHAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT THIS???

If there is ever any doubt how socialist policies combined with unions are the number one KILLER of cities/states and industries, just take a look at Los Angeles California, NY NY, Chicago Illinois. Just to name a few. On the other hand, right to work states have less unemployment and lower taxes. I say this as someone who just voted for a Democrat Mayor who is NOT a socialist, in a right to work state. Anyone who believes that dems give a fat rats #### about your health care is delusional. These policies have one goal in mind, EXPAND UNION ROLLS ‘SEIU’. The money and support from unions is the only way these clowns can keep us divided and them in power. Look at the big picture people.

Good point. Socialist states are vibrant with industry. Paradises like Michigan (1 state recession during biggest boom) and California (verge of bankruptcy) to Louisiana and New Orleans where hundreds of school buses flooded while the poor drowned.
Socialist states always have good intentions but the results speak for themselves.
By the way this is the worst recession since JIMMY CARTER – another socialist failure.
Bush inherited the dot com crash + recession, trillions of dollars of losses to the stock market and a second recession caused by 9/11 yet turned it around in only a few years.
We’ll be at 24% mortgage interest, gas lines, double digit inflation (completed) by the time Obama is done.

The way I see it, we are already over our head in debt. What’s another 2T give or take a few billion? We as a country are on a death spiral to a depression. We can not spend our way out of this. What’s to come is >10yrs of depression/recession. Look at Japan and Argentina for examples. The only differences is that Japan was able to export to growing markets and pay down their debt. We can not export anything to anyone except bonds. Bush started the spiral and Big O will hammer in the last nail.

Our forefathers built this country with that creed why now do the left believe that a work ethic is such a bad thing? We are not entitled to receive everything that we want. Quit trying to create a nanny state.IThe left wants to expand it’s base (Which happens to be made up of the freeloaders with their hand out)so if they make everyone dependent upon the government their base will expand. So everyone would like the same organization (the federal gov’t) that has bankrupted Medicare, Medicaid, social security, the post office etc… and has miss allocated 98 billion dollars of the tax payers to allocate and distribute our health care. At least the health insurance companies have not essentially lost 98 billion dollars or gone into debt. The health care system needs to be fixed but putting in the gov’t hands is not the right move. How about we try to get rid of the anit-trust practices health insurances companies engage in on a state level and maybe some tort reform to lessen mal-practice insurance among may other things. But why would that ever happen with special interest guiding our policies makers decisions.

So, right now, for every Medicaid dollar that is spent, federal money makes up 65.59% of each dollar, thanks to the stimulus. So, in Lousiana, that would increase by another 50% and basically, Louisiana can just put everyone on Medicaid with that kind of funding.
How nice for Louisiana. They can change their license plates to “The Welfare State”.

Here’s an idea. How about EVERY bill that is going to be “pushed through” be put to a vote by the American people instead. I wouldn’t mind going to a voting station once a month, once a week, or whatever it takes to at least get a vote in. If the politicians want to buy each other off, knock yourself out, but in the end WE get to vote on the bill.
Just put the bill on the internet for all to see (in layman’s terms, please). WE get the time to read it, WE get the time to digest it, WE get the opportunity to vote on it. No more partisanship, no more buy-offs, no more foot dragging, no more pork projects (since WE will get to see them included in the bill before WE vote). WE are the ones footing the bill for all this legislation, but WE don’t have a voice. And please don’t say we have representatives in Congress for us…they don’t give a rat’s behind about us. To them, it’s politics, plain and simple. To US, it’s jobs, the economy, healthcare, our livelihoods. To THEM, it’s another round in their cushy Washington DC chair. How nice to know somebody cares, huh?

Anyone who thinks that a huge new government bureaucracy with trillons of dollars of new taxes can run better than a well regulated private sector has no experience running a business. Medicare is broke, Post office is broke, the US government has printing presses otherwise they would be insolvent. Many states are broke. Additionally this program will drive doctors out of the profession when there is already a shortage. Cover more people with less money and fewer doctors??? Wake up, people.

The best congress money can buy!
Solutions:
1. Fire incumbents
2. Term Limits
3. Prosecute ANY AND ALL misuse of taxpayer funds.
4. Indict for treason any action by Congressmen or office holders or their collective staff, that aid and abet our sworn enemies.
5. Constitutional Convention reforming our tax structure to eliminate the IRS and replace it with the Fair Tax (Defund Congress).

Note that this is for medicaid subsidies.
States are going to need to come up with funds for extra medicaid payments because of this bill.
Nevada has a special provision in the bill as well.
See the senators KNOW this bill is going kill their states budgets, so the put tiny little presents in it to help themselves….DISGUSTING.

Just to further correct the liberal:
When all federal funding and all expenditures by the federal government and private citizens are compared to what state government and state residents contribute, blue states come out WAY AHEAD. The study you cite is meritless as it picks and chooses what type of funding and what type of taxes to count.
As to the comment that liberals want to help and conservatives do not, this is absurd. Every study of charitable giving shows that red states give substantially more than blue states, that self-described conservatives give far more than liberals.
While conservatives want to help with their own money and time, liberals want to help with someone else’s money or time. Liberals do not voluntarily pay more taxes (like conservatives voluntarily giving more to charity), they want to force others to donate to their moral causes through taxes, and then act smug and self-righteous because they are willing to force others under threat of imprisonment to donate to their causes.

“those women are raising children on their own, we should support them,” or “medical care is so expensive that young people are pulling teeth out of their heads with pliers rather than pay thousands in medical bills,”
Um, “T”, one of the difference between liberals and conservatives is THAT CONSERVATIVES GIVE MORE TO CHARITY than liberals. That is a fact.
The lib solution to helping people who are hurting is ALWAYS with somebody else’s money. If you are so compassionate about woman or children who are hurting why don’t you do what most conservatives do…find some and help them WITH YOUR OWN MONEY.
And cut the crap about liberals being “compassionate”. People who are hurting are mere political props to liberals. Props that are used to control people’s lives.

“T”: The reason for that is it’s expensive to live in places like New York, etc… so you have to make more money. Ergo, higher taxes.
If New York, et al, ran themselves like more conservative states and cities such as Nashville, Jacksonville, Austin, etc…. the cost of living would be MUCH LESS… therefore, you’d have to make less $ to live, and you’d pay less in taxes. DUH!
I thought you were a spread the wealth kind of guy…. no?

jhw539- “Actually, if you look at the numbers from the Tax Foundation the majority of strong Red states are dependent upon Federal tax dollars collected/redistributed from Blue states”
Of course that’s only true for the LAST election, where independents (hmm, hmm) tipped traditionally red states blue.
Seems many people bought the lie (again) that socialism works. States like California (socialistic) are floundering.
And now we have to suffer through the lie (that socialism works) again.
Problem with liberals is- they simply don’t have a pragmatic view of the world.

You know what… we all want to help. But that’s what charity is for. Government MANDATED charity is nothing but a money grab, always rife with fraud, always inefficient, and almost always leading to a bankrupt and perpetually money-sucking and tax-increasing lesion on the face of society.
Let me keep my own money and I’ll help in my own way.
BTW, the problem with health care is the COST of services, not the availability of coverage. The fact that you can’t even get in to see a doctor for so much as an ear exam in a major city if you don’t have insurance… that is the problem. Insurance needs to be gutted so it only covers emergency and catastrophic care, much like homeowner’s insurance. Then costs will come back down to earth and I can go get a blood test at my doctor for $75 and not need insurance to cover it.
Why is no one addressing this very simple problem?

I’m one of those young people who fortunately has medical coverage. This summer I needed a root canal and because of the costs I considered pulling it out on my own. Even though I have full dental coverage, I had to pay for 1/2 of the procedure, my out of pocket expense was $1,000. And my budgeting isn’t to pay for car insurance, it’s to pay for graduate school. Since owing $40,000 to increase my education is such a ridiculous expense I couldn’t properly budget and foresee having to pay for a root canal. Stereotyping doesn’t help this debate!

One of the ugliest part of US government is to allow the president to award ambassadorship to big donors. Previous presidents like Bushes and Clinton used to give donors the ambassadorship to small nations. Now Obama even give the job of ambassador to Greater Britain to a big donor. Furthermore, the Obama administration is not shy in using the money in the stimulus bill and health care bill to award voters to serve their political goal, such as the case of Mary Lanrieu. When campaigning for sen. Dodd in Connecticut, VP Biden has announced that 66 million dollars of stimulus money will be spent to widen a parkway in honor of Chris Dodd, whose job disapproval rating (on Quinnipiac poll) has even increased after the visit by Dodd and Obama.

The Public Option is going to be run as an insurance company for people that need the insurance. Individuals will pay for it (premiums) and receive health benefits. Hopefully more people will be covered because it will have reasonable rates that will compete with the established insurance companies like Blue Cross and Humana.

Dear Jax – you poor blind person-
Do you honestly thing we pay the huge and demoralizing level of taxes we do in order to support a bunch of conservatives?
Do you think that if we could look into the voting booths as our people who are on the public dole are voting we would see them voting for republicans?
Do you believe in the tooth fairy or that cats and mice should live in harmony together?
It is very simple – the government taxes some of us to death – so we cannot achieve our life goals or attain the happiness we pursue. Then it uses the money it stole from us to buy votes.
Do you think this is a sustainable policy? Read Alexis de Toqueville.

“hello,
This is about online payment. There is a massive change underway in the mobile media market as it becomes unshackled from the operators’ portals that have dominated it for a decade, all without having made any significant inroads into the content use of mobile users. The new capped data packages, fuelled by further competition, will see a total revamp of the mobile media market. It will no longer be based on portals but on direct services by content and services providers via open source phones and mobile-friendly Internet-based services. The next step is the continued emergence of m-commerce and in particular m-payment services.

It is telling us that Congress can not get anything done without paying off someone. Political weight is actually the party that has the most crooks on their side. Then they hang on ‘pork’ to bills, that no one hears about. They don’t feel bad at all about it. After all, it is tax payers money, not theirs.

Personally, I think that could be rewritten just slightly to benefit California. Because we are such a big state and we have had some huge disasters, but it doesnt cover every county, at least not all the time. So maybe it could be rewritten so that those counties who are heavily hit in the seven year period can have increased medicare benefits. Then it benefits any county, anywhere, where they have had to have FEMA come in. So, it would still benefit Louisiana, if every county has been hit hard, that would only be right and fair, because they must be still reeling. I know many have not yet been able to move back into their homes, or even have a home. I think this might also help parts of Mississipi and Florida too, if it were written so that any county that suffered from a disaster that FEMA had to enter into, had to have increased medicare benefits. Yes, I’m a liberal; the bible says to have a liberal heart. God gave me one, thank you God.

WHY does legal language have to be so exaggerated, excessive, exorbitant, if not to hide what should be known to those who Need to Know. Things that are written so obtusely are meant to confuse, and are written in Legalese (a language that Lawyers are taught in LAW school). Those of us who still speak the “King’s English” do not want to admit to misunderstanding, and not knowing how to say “Nay” or Hey! in that language, so we continue to accept
whatever is translated to us by the persuaders, who wrote the obtuse language in the first place. DUH! No wonder there is so much confusion, the whole Health thing is written in a foreign language.

Add the name Barack Obama to your list of traitors to the Nation and Constitution. His attempts to create a socialist government and society, his attempts to severely weaken American sovereignty by aggressively pushing inclusion in a 190-country wealth grab in Copenhagen, his continuing commentary on how awful America is, his Chicago style bullying of the Senator from Nebraska with the threat to CLOSE THE STRATEGIC COMMAND BASE in return for a illegal health care vote, and his illegal use of executive privilege and government power to intrude into the operations of lawfully incorporated corporations (GM, AIG, etc.) can all rightly be considered treasonous. He swore to defend and uphold the Constitution. He is now trying to un-do the Constitution right before the eyes of the fools who thought it would be “cool”, “trendy”, and “au courant” to vote for him.
Same is true for the Senators and Congressman throwing the United States and its citizens into socialist hell with an economy to match with the health care bill (illegal under the Constitution) and the so-called “Climate” bill (illegal under the Constitution).
“You propose to establish a social order based on the following tenets: that you’re incompetent to run your own life, but competent to run the lives of others-that you’re unfit to exist in freedom, but fit to become an omnipotent ruler-that you’re unable to earn your living by the use of your own intelligence, but able to judge politicians and to vote them into jobs of total power over arts you have never seen, over sciences you have never studied, over achievements of which you have no knowledge, over the gigantic industries where you, by your own definition of your capacity, would be unable successfully to fill the job of assistant greaser.”
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live my life for another man, nor ask any man to live his for me.

As a Louisiana resident, I can agree, I’m quite ashamed for Mary Landrieu. All it took was them waving some cash at her for her to abandon common sense and jump on board the Health Care Regime Train. I appreciate that the money will go to help my home; I also understand that political wrangling back here at home probably has cost us more than any tab Mary’s vote cost. More money being sent this way won’t help unless it’s done in a good and useful way. We finally started making some smarter choices with our choice of governor and ONE of our Senators. Turns out, we don’t like her vote being for sale either. Now, we get more cash for Louisiana politicions (yay, thanks mary, not anything I’ll ever see) AND we get higher taxes and many will get worse healthcare because her votes for sale. So proud to be from here… on second thought… not so much.

Some good comments, and some tiring ones, already made. I see the situation as this… do I like Democratic senators holding their vote until their state gets a tidy agreement, no… and I wouldn’t support such senators for doing so. However, if Obama needs to use such tactics because of Republican short-sightedness and not suitably caring about the millions of uninsured people in America, then fair play to him. I’d do exactly the same. I’d improve the standard of everyone’s healthcare, and then you can have your little crying session on how it was done. The person being able to get a hip replacement finally is not going to give a damn about $100 million given to Lousiana, when it should’ve received ten times that amount by the prior administration. Special money for asbestosis affected areas, doesn’t sound bad either. If it were $2million for a telescope again, I’d understand… but… it’s not.

At what point will people realize that raising taxes on businesses and the wealthy won’t work anymore to pay that off? Wake up! See the reality that this country is going bankrupt largely because of irresponsible spending and people with self-righteous morals that want to “help” people buy giving life-long handouts that come from our collective tax dollars. The sleazy promoters of Obamacare are condemned by their own words. Consider Tom Harkin, “In the future, amending it and changing it isn’t going to be as tough as passing it in the first place. We amend Medicare and Social Security all the time. We are changing rates, fixing this, doing this to make sure that they are viable. That’s what we will do in health care. I’m absolutely convinced of it.” ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Consider Obama, “That’s what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are, because part of what we have to do is enlist the American people in this process.”
Consider Mary Landrieu who stood up on the Senate floor and proclaimed my state didn’t get $100 million it was $300 million.
Now consider that Harkin was telling the truth about playing the bill after it passes as he readily admits they do with all entitlements. What will that playing do to the cost, what wil it do to the fictitious savings Obama talks about? But more important, WHAT WILL IT DO TO THE NATIONAL DEBT?
If as the CBO warns, the current debt of $12.4 trillion is unsustainable, what will we do when these progressives triple it to $36 trillion? let’s admit that we can never recover from a $36 trillion debt so why let a president and a bunch of thieving senators ruin our nation?
Hold your senators and representative accountable!

When (and if) we ever get a competent president in office, he will refuse to sign bills that are 2,000 pages long. He will inform Congress that if he is unable to find time to read (and fully understand) a piece of legislation, he will return it with a veto instruction.
Lawyers love lengthy language and lots of complexity (they used to get paid by the word, now most get paid by the hour). It runs contrary to the spirit of a democracy — since no one can understand what is being proposed as a law.
On the other hand, complexity works well for those who want to enrich their contributors while keeping the country in the dark. It is the heart of corruption. Mr. Obama could stop it with a few well-chosen words in the State of the Union address. The State, by the way, is not much to brag about.

You know what… I’d rather pay $100 for a public-option health care insurance and slightly higher taxes than $500/month to private insurance so that I can contribute to the CEO’s $20 million a year bonus, only to have them cancel my policy when I get sick, after paying thousands and thousands of dollars in premiums over the years. It’s not like those private insurers don’t already “socialize” medical care for us… anyone think that a 3-hour ER visit actually costs $1000? No, it’s your visit plus the visits of other uninsured people who can’t afford it and can’t get insurance because of “pre-existing conditions”.
We need health care reform. Diseases, like fire and crime, can spread and they affect our economy and our ability to be a productive, capitalist society. If the Republicans would like to suggest how we can reform health care, then please make suggestions. It doesn’t matter if we have a public option or not, as long as health care is accessible and affordable to everyone. I haven’t heard any ideas yet, just a lot of noise and no substance.

New Orleans Mayor Nagin and Louisiana ex-governor Blanco showed how total corruption on the local level and FEMA delays ruined a city thats 18 feet below sea level . A catastrophe waiting for Mother nature to strike.
Apparently Cedar Rapids, Galveston, Greensberg, and Mobile had intelligent elected officials to get them thru their disasters unlike like that coward in New Orleans Mayor Nagin who ran to higher ground in Baton Rouge while his city sunk.

500 dollars for two aspirin and a plastic cup! That is exactly where the problem is today. It is not that the system is broke. The government oversight is broke. We have been betrayed by our own government. They lack the balls to tell these scum bag insurance companies to knock their #### off and refuse to pay these ridicules charges. Why is that every American has to pay these greedy ####? It is not because our health care is superior. Far from it actually and in most cases sub standard. In fact we are ranked among the lowest in the western world. By every measure we are getting ripped off killed and then sent the bill by our insurance companies. Now they have the politicians trying to force this crappp down our throats. The real doctors who do the job because they are passionate about helping people are drowned out by the money grubbing scum bags who are looking to cash in on 8 years of schooling by sucking as much as they can from that turnip. I can not believe that they want the government to make up the difference in what they feel they should be making versus what they are and to top it all off for the lame assesss who did not go to med school to help people but to help themselves, they do not want to be punished when the screw up royally by either maiming or killing one of their patients. They say that this is too harsh. You would think that the real doctors would want these idiots off the streets so there would not be thousands of lawsuits filed against the same doctor over and over again. They should do more to police themselves. It is should be the AMA that has a black list to weed out idiots, liars, cheats and wannabe doctors who only care about their meal ticket.

Well lets see we would not have Americans that are unemployed sitting here worring about the unemployment benifits were runnig out if the Dem congress had not been wasting our tax dollars working on Obama care that over 75% of Americans dont wont they should of been worring about jobs(correct me if Im wrong but wasnt the stim suppossed to help with that?instead it helped the people that caused these problems to get million dollar bonus and now here we go again Aig just gave out 168 million in bonuses and needs another bailout,Fannie and Freddie want more but yet only 166,000 people were helped with theie mortages. We are letting these crooks Bankrupt this country.America was built on hard work, honest people, everyone that is in a high position in the WH has either not paid taxes,or broke some kind of laws, look at Rangle he is a theif in charge of our money how stupid is that and what is even more disturbing is the dems think that is ok.How many of the 30 million the dems want to insure are Americans??I dont know about you but Im not paying for deadbeats,or Illegals Im not taking away from my family.wake up American

Some of the best comments I’ve seen. I’m starting to think America has a chance again…

I wonder if any members of congress has stopped to think that there are a whole of people that don”t go to the doctors for healing. A lot of religions belive in super natural healing and alternative medicne. If congress forces everyone to pay for a health insurance, I feel that this goes aginst my freedom of religion. Why should I be forced to pay for something that I will never use.

If congress passes this bill I believe that they will be opening up a can of worms, that they wished thy had not opened.

Killing healthcare for ALL Americans, will kill Americans.
More American men, women–and yes, America’s children, die every year in our nation, from nothing more than unaffordable health care, than all those whom died on 9/11.
How are the lives of these innocent Amercians, whom have suffered from treatable illness, any less valuable then those whom died by the hands of a terrorist?
How much IS the life of an American man, woman or child worth, these days? Do we value the lives of our uninsured and underinsured, even less than the terrorists do?
Health care–and the lack thereof, is America’s Holocaust. Just as the Germans ignored the suffering of WWII, so do everyday Americans turn their backs on the real and genuine suffering going on, right in their own village’s, townships and cities. Right in their own neighborhoods, in their own families, perhaps.
This isn’t about money, it isn’t about too much government, it’s about human life. It’s about real human beings–from infants to the elderly, suffering needlessly from pain and sickness, because they lack the funds for expensive medicines and doctor’s or dental co-pays. Or, there simply aren’t enough “cheap” doctors or dentists or opticians, to go around…in some communiities, there’s no option for health care at all.
Why do some Americans get to live with private health care, and other die, with little or no health care?
Greed? Selfishness? Where’s the so-called “Christian” right-to-life movement, when it comes to health care? Why aren’t Christians marching on Washington D.C., to save millions of lives–including the lives of already born babies?
The battle over health care in America is being watched by millions all over the world–and if you read the response of those millions, most of whom in Western Europe, have national health care…they are appalled and disgusted.
I’m ashamed and disgusted. There’s no “United” states as long as those with health care continue to ignore the suffering of those without.
What the heck good is worrying about obesity or smoking, when over 45 million human beings can’t afford antibiotics or other basic medicine?
No one in America should become homeless, because they, their child or a spouse has contracted a serious illness or injury—yet they do, by the tens of thousands, every year in this country. This is the ONLY “demoractic” western nation that allows this to happen.
This is the ONLY western democratic nation where people quite literally have to choose between eating and buying medicine.
This is the ONLY western democratic nation, that allows employers force workers to work without sick pay or health insurance.
It’s a Holocuast, happening right under our noses, a national disease of greed and politics being played out under our noses, at a cost of millions of innocent American lives.
American pride? Where?

You know you might have to let the government support you if the economy doesn’t improve. More people are getting help in food kitchens, food pantries, and the price of food in the markets. I cannot see the average person making it in the near future if something is not done to get our jobs back. Also health care reform needs to pass and then tackle the things that are not feasiable.

It’s common knowledge that Hurricane Katrina devastated the state, destroying homes, livelihoods and entire communities. But in the wake of Katrina, millions of dollars flooded into the state, in insurance payments, aid and money for new construction and repairs. Although thousands of people were, and are, still suffering from Katrina’s impact, on paper it looked like the state had gained millions of dollars. On paper, incomes went up by 40%. Yes, some people, mainly those in engineering and construction, did well out of the unfortunate building boom, but in reality, thousands had lost their jobs, their homes and their savings. That sort of thing isn’t accounted for in income calculations.
The result was that because of this perceived increase in income, the funding formula compels the federal government to cut it’s Medicaid funding to Louisiana. (The federal calculations are done on a three year rolling average, so there’s a lag time between the post-Katrina income spike, which continued for some time, and the changes to federal funding.) The state government, already stretched from all the other post-Katrina demands on spending – repairing roads, schools, basic infrastructure – is looking at paying far more than it’s historic share of Medicaid payments.

Okay lets put it this way, when you 57 years old crippled and unable to find a job because you can move… lets just set you out on the street and hope no one runs over you, which would be more humane just give em enough money to keep em off the street or let them die! if you prefer to die go for it.. if not let the government in their small ways help you …. is that asking too much after working for 45 years and severing in the marines to protect this country everyone says is so screwed up go a head bash the changes obama is try to do to improve our lives,, ot are you one of the people making more then 200,000 a year?

Hello to all of you, I think that you all are speaking without thinking. You all know someone or is related to someone who will benefit from what Mary did and or the legislation or both, don’t let the republicans shoot you alot of crap! Mary did a good thing for her state. She alway looks out for us. I work everyday and I have all kinds of insurance. I am glad other people that need it will be glad to have it. Read up on insurance in France, the best in the world, England, Germany and Canada. And then read up on what the president is trying to do for all of the working class citizens and the poor of this country. We deserve a break. The people that will be taxed 2.4 percent will not even miss that little bit of money. So learn the facts and stop shooting down the deal because a black president made it. Love you. A Realist

The really sad part of this is that by the time the bill takes effect, it will be more than 7 years since Katrina and she won’t get anything for her bribe.
Posted by: Butch | March 30, 2010, 7:09 pm 7:09 pm
what a farce, this bill needed outright bribes to pass. That stupid Stupek or what ever the fool from mi. name is, sold his vote cheap. he could have stopped it. he sold out for nothing for his state, and no legal deal on abortion.

jaxparrothead – we as a country/government gave a TON of money to that town. (you can check the politicians pockets to find it). When is enough, enough? They got their share, others need money too.

T is full of it. Forbes had an article on the 5 worst and best states in the country that run on red ink. Wouldnt you know the 5 reddest ink states were solid blue or blue leaning and the 5 non reddest ink states were solid red or red leaning and to top it off the state with the worst red ink was….. you guessed it Illinois our illustrious POTUS’s own home state. Looks like hes running the country like Illinois was and still is being run. Dont believe me then look it up !!

Healthcare reform – Yes.
Gov run healthcare – No.
This is a disgrace how this bill was passed.
VAT tax will be inevitable.
The voice of the people is lost.

its always fascinating at what parts of news get discussed – people who gripe about welfare never pause to consider that something like 2/3 are children.. they always make it sound like hordes of able bodies slobs are sitting around. Maybe they world never includes ill people or people with disabilities, the very old and poor…
we will always have leeches to ferret out but its loathsome at the news coverage that seems to imply all recipients are leeches… yeah, lets put those womean with children to living on the street…

This is so typical: deceptive, corrupt, disgusting.
Reid, et. al., should be ashamed.

I don’t recognize about the accurateness or matter of this charge-but I will say that receiving health care reform approved would be significance the money. So we leave Iraq 8 hours earlier. That should envelop it.
