Jarrett: NY-23 Shows Republicans More and More Extreme

Moderate NY Republican Dede Scozzafava’s move Saturday to drop out of the NY-23 Congressional race drew harsh criticism from the President’s top adviser, Valerie Jarrett.  She told me this morning on This Week that it shows the Republican party has become, “more and more extreme and more and more marginalized.”

She did say that the White House would love to have the moderate Republican throw her support behind the Democratic candidate Bill Owens over Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman. “It’s rather telling when the Republican party forces out a moderate Republican and I think it says a great deal about where the Republican party leadership is right now,” Jarrett said.

Funny, I don’t remember Democrats being called extreme for “pushing” out Joe Lieberman. Hmmm.

‘mike’, it’s because Lieberman is not a Democrat.

Methinks it’s Obama that has become more extreme, he wants socialism and he wants it now in the form of universal healthcare.
Also Obama is so extreme he doesn’t want anyone to check his numbers, that would be “calculator abuse” as with stimulus analysis!

This is a special case where the republican did not fit the district. The White House comments are laughable when talking about extreme. They just want another seat.

George, Dede Scozzafava is not a moderate, she is a liberal. McCain is a ‘get-a-long’ moderate.

This is a horrible headline just a few days before the election. This gives some credence to the claim the conservatives are the extremists. The conservative’s goals are no different than those of the country’s founding fathers’ goals – more freedoms, less intrusive government, less taxation – hardly extremist. Why is ABC running this headline now? Whose side are you on? “Former” Democrat George Stephanopoulos’s bias is showing.

Not sure where Jarrett thinks the Republican party is right now … I thought it was “rather telling” at the outset when the Sec Army selection was made solely for creating this vacancy – but was anyone surprised?

its narrowed minded, ditto head, irrational, uninformed, conservative republican extremists in NY-23 & everywhere else that have ruined our country and are exactly the same mentality as Muslim extremists. Both are totally demented and self serving…..just like Hoffman and all of the conservative self righteous religious republicans. What a shame!

Adam, I refer you the vicious cries for Senator Leiberman’s recall, his impeachment, being tried as a traitor, and so forth that were posted on an article just yesterday when Senator Leiberman (Independent) actually had the audacity not to toe the DEMOCRATIC Party line.

Vararie Jarrett is the extremist. She brought Van Jones to the white house. Valarie Jarrett is so far left that it is scary.
Americans are finally waking up look at the virginia governor’s race. Americans are scared of this extremist one party democratic dictatorship.
Do you want 9 far left liberals on the supreme court. Do you want all out illegal immigration?
Do you want all out spending for politics? Do you want 60 dem senators and Pelosi as speaker with the white house with a far left agenda.
Do you want affirmative action forever.
Do you want the federal govt to be able to sue you if you don’t hire someone like the dems are proposing that if you are gay and not hired they can sue. Dems want to allow transvestites to sue if they aren’t hired.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 11:13 am 11:13 am

Earth to Valarie Jarrett look at the Virginia race your own dem candidate says the democratic national party has gone extreme left.
Jarrett thinks just because americans were fed up with bush and thought Palin was a joke that they want to go far left.
She is wrong and dems will lose the house next year in a route.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 11:14 am 11:14 am

Dems kicked out a moderate dingell from the enviornment committee because he wasn’t liberal enough. Dems put in tax and spender extremist harry waxman to his place.
Dems tar and feather any sign of moderates in their party and are running non stop ads to have to toe the liberal line.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 11:17 am 11:17 am

I believe the republican party is finding its roots. This is a good thing since those things include limited government, fiscal responsibility, and personal responsibility. They still need to get off there war footing though. Ron Paul has got them scared and they are scrambling. It is pretty funny to watch.

Posted by: Huh | November 1, 2009, 11:18 am 11:18 am

I do not think it reflects the GOP as a whole since the tradtional leadership supported the GOP candidate. What I think it reflects is the increasing dissatisfaction with the status quo of the politics as usual.
REgardless of what Obama promised in the campaign for a inclusive tone, the liberal and extreme wing of his party has pushed us further and further from the center. Just like the GOP!
As far as I can tell Obama and the Congressional democrats are as bad as the GOP ever was under Bush. It might be time for new political parties.

Posted by: scott jeffries | November 1, 2009, 11:18 am 11:18 am

Dems are becoming more and more extreme.
Chuck Schumer last week saying he will bring gay marraige to all 50 states.
Dems took away the immigration enforement powers of a local sheriff and won’t allow sheriffs around the country to go out and arrest illegals. The Obama administration is not sending ICE to deport illegals to the border if sheriffs go out on raids against illegals.
Janet Napalitano personally ended work site raids against illegals and the Obama administration added more layers of appeals for illegals that will tie it up in the courts.
Bill Clinton governed in a far more moderate way. This administration is all out partisan they have to dictate everything and play to the base.

Posted by: jeff | November 1, 2009, 11:23 am 11:23 am

Van Jones is the model of moderation and that is why he was recruited to the white house.

Posted by: Valarie Jarrett | November 1, 2009, 11:26 am 11:26 am

Read “A Changed Race” in the watertowntimes. Dede did encourage her supporters to vote for Owens!!!!! Many of Dede’s supporters would not vote for Hoffman if he were the only candidate.

What utter stupidity by the Obama aide. The obama administration is so far left anybosy would be right of them.
He wins the election by lying.
Now the general public is far right of obama except for a few dimwits. Some of which post here.

Van Jones, why doesn’t the White House hire people who are competent in their function.
A green jobs Czar, whould have been someone who ACTUALLY created and ran a GREEN COMPANY, who showed that they could CREATE jobs in the private sector, not just talk about it.
Very sad for this country!

Obama and his communist administration are the epitome of “extreme” and for them to call the GOP “extreme” is hilarious.

Looks like she is using the same old tactic to try to discredit a group of Americans that oppose her views. The American people are tired of these tactics and they just dont work anymore. When someone uses these tactics it usually means they are scared.

Posted by: jake | November 1, 2009, 11:56 am 11:56 am

Dede Scozzafava did not represent the majority of the Republicans or conservatives in her district. As such, she mounted a bid that was proving to be unsuccessful. Her bid was unsuccessful because she faced opposition from a candidate, Hoffman, whose views DID represent the non-liberals in the district.
This is not being “forced-out”. This is not “Stalinism” (Frank Rich is an idiot). This is democracy in America. The local GOP doesn’t pick candidates– the people do. Naturally, a big-party-machine stooge like Valerie Jarrett finds this distasteful. That’s her problem, not ours.

Posted by: CH | November 1, 2009, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

Valerie Jarrett? Oh you mean a the Obama shill who implied that FOX News isn’t genuine but MSNBC is! and what’s with the “moderate” tag instead of “liberal”. Geez, I live in the 29th district and our Rep. Eric Mazza (Dem, and a good man!) looks like Francisco Franco compared to her! My question is why does George always get the headline on this site when he’s so obviously in the tank for the White House?

Posted by: country cuz | November 1, 2009, 12:06 pm 12:06 pm

I love in comment sections when someone writes “America is finally waking up because bla-bla-bla”.
The ultimate delusional hollow comment which is basically a mere slogan.
Been hearing that line for decades…and whoever gets in does the same cruddy performance as their predecessors.

The problem is that both political parties have their extreme factions and they have become more and more extreme over the past 20 years. As small as these factions are, mainstream middle of the road Americans are being drowned out and pushed aside every election year by the extremists who make the most noise and raise the most money. Isn’t that how Al Qaida and the Taliban have come to be so powerful?

Posted by: aviator | November 1, 2009, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm

americans… at least for those sailing on the conservative right probably will gain power, they have the hate to drive them to succeed. and if they do, america will look like a nazi germany or a fascist italy lead by an american style taliban regime. this will be the drop in the bucket to start the demise of our great nation rolling. they are loud, they are ignorant and they are scary. gd the conservative gop. less government my arse, that doesnt was with their right to life standpoint. they want more government, so much that it controls every aspect of ones freedom of mind, body and soul by their backward fundamental christian beliefs.

I guess George doesn’t recall that the Democrats did everything possible to sabotage Joe Lieberman because he had different views on defense of our nation. Both parties have crack pots and extreme views. The difference here is that the Conservatives saw that the Republican could not win so they chose a candidate that could. However with Joe Lieberman, the democrats backed a candidate that lost to Joe as an independent. George is been around politics to long to playing politics in his writings. He would be better to come out and admit he slants stories to his political views.

I still think the brilliant comedian Bill Maher put it best when he noted that “The Democratic Party has moved to the left and the Republican Party is in the mental hospital”
We need to get rid of Leibermann, he is no Democrat, he is not progressive, he is not a good man, in other words he is a natural born Republican.

Posted by: SF | November 1, 2009, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm

I think this is good news for the democratic party. I’ve long suspected that Palin & some other extremist nutjob will run a third party for president. They will siphon off the wingnuts, weaking the republican base. Ergo, what happened to the democratic party when Nadar ran. Welcome to the Nadar-effect republicans; a ticket to win for the democrats in 2012.

Posted by: C.A. | November 1, 2009, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

Each party has their extremes. I don’t see the press bashing the Code Pink folks when they burn U.S. soldiers in effigy. I also don’t see them slamming the extreme left near riots during the WTO conference. However, I sure see them going to great links and gross exagerations to make something negative out of the Tea Bag gatherings and Town Hall meetings. The point is that the left has as many loons as the right; it’s just not covered unless you watch something like Fox News. Call it what you will but George and the Obama admin are hypocrites when they view commentators such as Olberman and Moddow on MSNBC as anything other than the reciprocal of Beck and Hannity on Fox.

Posted by: John L | November 1, 2009, 12:49 pm 12:49 pm

Amazing that they did this to DeDe. Hoffman isn’t even from our district, and is NOT the best person for our district. Outsiders like Palin and the rest of the Radical GOP are not good for the Republican Party. There’s no room for us moderates anymore within the Republican Party.

JR — “The conservative’s goals are no different than those of the country’s founding fathers’ goals – more freedoms, less intrusive government, less taxation . . . ”
I think that’s what MOST people in this country really want whether they normally vote R or D or even I. But sadly the conservative movement does not seem to want more freedoms. They appear to want more restrictions that follow very closely with their own particular religious beliefs. No abortion for ANY reason, prayer “brought back” to schools (where it never existed in the first place), total disrespect for gays, complete intolerance for anyone who doesn’t walk like, talk like, or think exactly like them. That’s scary.
But I’d agree that some liberals are just as far the other direction and that’s equally scary.

Posted by: xtch3 | November 1, 2009, 1:00 pm 1:00 pm

Jarrett is simply repeating the unspoken mantra of the left: Accuse your enemies of what YOU are and what YOU do.
Saul Alinsky taught them well.
So how’s that Hope and Change thing going for you?

Posted by: Jenn | November 1, 2009, 1:02 pm 1:02 pm

Actually, it is the black and white comparisions she makes that is more and more marginalizing conservatives and moderate conservatives. An unfair tactic, but I guess to the extreme left, even a moderate conservative would look extreme right now.

Posted by: Ted | November 1, 2009, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

The problem with Republicans is they mix religion and politics. Their preferred economic model (lower taxes, less regulation) has strengths in some ways but it’s clouded by the need to restrict personal liberty.
The problem with Democrats is they can’t balance a checkbook. But after watching Bush spend like a kid with a credit card, I’m not sure there is a difference anymore.
I can’t be a part of the GOP religious war. I want a secular government.
Someday maybe there will be a party for socially liberal but economically responsible Americans. It sounds like Scozzafava would be a good fit.

Posted by: LR | November 1, 2009, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

Yeah. I do and that’s how I know Republicans are around. Its what they sell. People are fearful for their own future so the Republican message is resonating loud and clear with the cautious and sad.
I will agree that Republicans have become more extreme. Its reactionary. Obama has become more moderate, much more moderate than he was on the trail.

LR Said: “Their preferred economic model (lower taxes, less regulation) has strengths…”
===================================
LR, you forgot to add the other parts to their economic model:
1. Lower taxes while simultaneously executing two wars.
2. Fool the “race horses” into believing that they’re not paying for those wars (since you lowered taxes), and then borrow from China, borrow from China, and borrow from China (with interest) to pay for those wars.
3. Tell the “race horses” that you’re for “smaller government”, but while you control the White House and the Congress (2003 to 2007) create an entirely new federal department called, “Homeland Defense”.
By the way, the “race horses” are the ones that still have the blinders on….LOL.

Posted by: X-Republican Because of Bush | November 1, 2009, 1:11 pm 1:11 pm

x-republican: You forgot:
1. Lower taxes for the very rich, calling it “double taxation”
2. Pushing corporate welfare on the “Race horses” while claiming that this would eventually loosen credit markets for the race horses. (remember this was Bush’s idea.)
3. Convince these “race horses” that you are giving them expanded medicare coverage while ensuring the drug companies a $600 billion a year extra profit.
3. Push the “moral” values of America by taking away choice from women then turn around and refuse to extend health care access to these irresponsible, terminally or chronically ill people because its too expensive. After all, its the “moral” party, isn’t it, Ms. Palin?

Posted by: lovebugs | November 1, 2009, 1:28 pm 1:28 pm

Rahm Emanuel and this white house are so cynical.
They play politics with positions.
The white house offered McHugh the previous republican for this seat the sec of army job not because they thought he was the best candidate but to play mischeif with the republicans.
This same white house also offered pete king one of the few gop reps in ny the ambassador to ireland position. They didn’t think he was the best pick but were playing politics.
They also played politics with jon huntsman for china ambassador and he felt it was his duty to serve.

i got a kick out of Valerie today–all partisanship is the republicans fault-if only they would go against all of their principles they could become bi-partisan.
Also, every time George would point out an inaccuracy-the amount of partisanship, the public not being in favor of Obamas plan-she simply said we she wanted without presenting any facts-as if whatever she said was gospel
and this woman in upstate NY was not a moderate R, she was a liberal R–to the left of the Dem candidate-thank god she dropped out so the folks can actually have a choice
The other interesting thing in all of this is that George-Mr Nuetral still has very close ties with the Democratic leadership–and Valerie says Fox has an agenda-Oh Val….

There is an old saying, “All politics are local”. This particularly appropriate here as the moderate was not a good fit. But there are many moderate Republicans that would like to see the party become more inclusive and get back to policies of fiscal responsibility instead of the emphasis on social isses. The country is primarily moderate and with out them the Republicans will not win.
