Winners/Losers in NY-23

Winners:
Rahm Emanuel
– for opening seat up with McHugh pick for Army Secretary.
Chuck Schumer and Steve Israel – for convincing Scozzafava to endorse Owens.
Joe Biden – for closing the deal with last minute rally.   (Now 2-0 v Sarah Palin)
Dede Scozzafava – what will she get from the White House and grateful Dems?

Losers:
Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty – if you go for the kill, you gotta win.
NRCC – lost once with Scozzafava, once with Hoffman.
Club for Growth – a million dollars is a terrible thing to waste.

Too Early to Tell:
Newt Gingrich
– will he be rewarded or punished for prescient Cassandra warning?
Health Care – Pelosi needs every vote she can get – Owens will help.  But will overall Tuesday results make moderate Senate Dems even more cautious?

Here's my conversation with Diane on GMA:

- George Stephanopoulos

It seems to me neither Sarah Palin or Tim Pawlenty are really losers in this. The President campaigned much more actively for the Virginia & NJ Govenor races & the losses were much worse. Not to mention the fact that Hoffman came out of nowhere & came very close. If you think SP & TP are losers what does that make the President?

Nice spin, George.
Hoffman, a THIRD PARTY conservative, was only on the scene for THREE weeks and nearly beat Owens. If Scozzafava’s name weren’t on the ballot, Hoffman would have won. That’s huge. Plus, Hoffman purged a RINO. And Palin had a huge hand in it. Awesome. Liberals should be VERY worried about 2010.

Posted by: Jenn | November 4, 2009, 6:54 am 6:54 am

I think Newt was a loser. He backed an obvious RINO and said she wasn’t a RINO. He was PROVED WRONG when she endorsed the Democrat like the Democrat she is.

I’d rather loose standing on my principles than win by fudging on what I believe. That’s what it means to be a conservative. As a parent I believe and live this every day. I must be flexible – but I also must know where I will not go. What I will not bend to. The Dems and media will not understand conservatives (like Palin) until they understand we have standards that we can not sell out. Even if it means loosing.

Posted by: kay | November 4, 2009, 7:43 am 7:43 am

Jenn,
You can’t say with any certainty that Scozzafava’s name on the ballot is what saved Owens. Owens won with 49%, Hoffman garnered 45%, and Scozzafava 6%. If Scozzafava was really as liberal as you claimed, it would stand to reason her votes would have gone to Owens, not Hoffman, and he would have at least gotten to 50% + 1.
But “Hoffman purged a RINO. And Palin had a huge hand in it.” So great, that’s good. Let Palin purge all the RINOs, and you can govern 11% of the country on local levels, but you’ll never win another national campaign.

Somehow you forgot to mention in your winners list ACORN, I bet they were lurking around there somwhere.

“It seems to me neither Sarah Palin or Tim Pawlenty are really losers in this”
you overthrow the local pick for the national appointee, and the national appointee , despite spending more than the dem, in a district that is 65% republican, lost the vote.
If that aint a loser, nothing is

“Let Palin purge all the RINOs, and you can govern 11% of the country on local levels, but you’ll never win another national campaign.”
LOL! I love the spin and delusion of the left. The fact that Hoffman, a third party candidate, got 45% of the vote with just three weeks of campaigning is a big deal. Gallup recently showed that over 40% of Americans consider themselves Conservative. Liberals are about 20%. Washington will eventually be aligned with WE THE PEOPLE, but it will require purging of liberals from both parties. Unfortunately for power-hungry politicians, the momentum is with the people, as it should be.

Posted by: Jenn | November 4, 2009, 8:03 am 8:03 am

“Gallup recently showed that over 40% of Americans consider themselves Conservative. Liberals are about 20%.”
Yeah, but that 20% are the better educated people, the movers and the shakers, and the more successful.
A big chunk of the 40% who call them selves conservative are “average” to “below average” in intelligence, hence they are less apt to help the country grow.
Liberals: “Yes we can!” Conservatives: “if everyone is poor, I won’t feel like such a loser.”

Posted by: Amy in Maine | November 4, 2009, 8:17 am 8:17 am

I was definitely hoping for Hoffman, but I am glad to have Owens (a wolf) rather than a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Thank you Sarah Palin. If she and other Conservatives continue to call out the Republican party they will regain respect for the party. Just as Christie ran on honesty and integrity, so should the republican party be.
Everything is changing with the GOP, they are finally being forced to listen to their own constituents rather than their competition.

“Yeah, but that 20% are the better educated people, the movers and the shakers, and the more successful.”
LOL!!

Just a word of warning to the Southern Carpet(baggers). Don’t presume to come to North Country and influence our elections.

Posted by: Mike | November 4, 2009, 8:27 am 8:27 am

LOL, the NeoCons are squealing in delight at the Gov races. Governors don’t have much to do with deciding national policy. However, the pick up of Owens as Congressman has lots of influence on policies. After about a year of Rove & Christie governorship we will see what happens in N.J.

Posted by: Phil | November 4, 2009, 8:33 am 8:33 am

The GOP is not going to win without the support of moderates. I fear the day when both party’s candidates are so far to the right and left that us in the middle are stuck picking the lesser of 2 evils, Wait that day was last November.

Posted by: Andrew | November 4, 2009, 8:37 am 8:37 am

Amy in Maine: First off in Repect for your support on Issue 1 in Maine let me say the following…Ha Ha Ha.. Loser!

Posted by: jhw539 | November 4, 2009, 8:59 am 8:59 am

I think you have to say the current state of mind is denial! Exit polls show the following. First in Virginia 30% of the voter turnout was Independent and 66% of those voted Republican, 53% of voters said they were “Very Concerned” about the direction of the Economy and 77% of those voted Republican, 85% said they are “Concerned” and 63% voted Republican. 24% of those asked said they voted to show Disapproval for Obama! Now New Jersey 28% of voter turnout Independent and 60% voted Republican 56% of the voters stated they were “Very Concerned” about the the Direction of the Economy and 61% of those voted Republican! 89% said they were “Concerned” about the direction of the economy and 51% voted Republican! And 19% of voters said they voted to show Disapproval for Obama!

I remember during the election, Rick Warren asked the candidates “do you believe in the existance of evil?”
This morning I would answer, “yes, evil does exist, and its here, right in America.”
But then, evil has always existed, in every culture and society in the world. Justice, creativity, innovation, CHANGE, are things that are advanced by only a handful of people in any country. It’s an uphill battle, but it’s the only way humanity advances: when the brightest people show the way.

When will the Republicans stop attempting to force feed their “values”? Congress is far the worse for all the members toeing their parties’ lines. Quest For Fire II could star Harry Reid and John Boehner.

Posted by: David | November 4, 2009, 9:48 am 9:48 am

Conservative Republicans have shown they are a serious cult to eliminate and they aren’t followers of Christ at all. Jesus The Christ was a collaborator who brought individuals of difference together, not elminate them or oust them. What he did do was bring individuals together. This just shows how conservative republicans have a cult cleansing mentality and the republican party is so much like the Hitler regime to cleanse and not bring people together in wholeness. Big plus to Italian government for making a different in church versus state. Many of us Christians don’t like the Crucifix either with Jesus hanging on the cross. That Crucifix is just one symbol of one faith not all in the Christian faith therefore, good job Italy.

A TRUE TEACHABLE MOMENT for Republicans: No more RINOs / Democrats in Republican suits. Liberals, Leftists, Socialists belong in the Democrat-Socialist Party.

Posted by: Ron | November 4, 2009, 10:29 am 10:29 am

Let’s see… George Stephanopoulos, former Clinton operative, is now the “objective” political analyst at ABC News. And George is picking the Winners and Losers from the elections – Which seem to be the Right… Hmmm. Objective? Not seeing it. How did the two Republican wins not relect on the Obama but the NY-23 did? Wow. Very transparent George.

Posted by: Robert | November 4, 2009, 10:46 am 10:46 am

Thanks Sarah!! Keep up the good work. Everything you touch turns rotten. There hasn’t been a dem in NY-23 since the civil war!! It’s a red district, yet Bible spice managed to scare everyone off. She only represents a small minority of republicans, not all of you can be that dumb.

Posted by: SAYWHAt | November 4, 2009, 10:55 am 10:55 am

Jenn…you and blind people like you keep adamantly believing what you do. And celebrate these meaningless wins while you can. You will not be able to in”10 or’12. Moderates left the party for one reason in ’08. It is called extreme conservative thinking. And based on the New York results we can see that that “virulent strain” is getting worse. What we have here is a great example of short term vs. long term thinking. Educated, progressive people always win that type of battle.

Hoffman was winning until Scuzzofava’s district was counted.
He will unseat Owens, the Democrat lawyer in the regular election.
I would say the Rebublicrats were the losers and Rahm’s “win”, as his morning phone mate George characterizes it, is more like dumb luck.
Should have mentioned Rahm was furiously calling from the White House to get the endorsement too George.
Leave your personal politics out of your “journalism” George.
It’s not professional & makes it look like you are working for the White House again.
This was a very sleazy race for both the Dems & Rep’s. The only real winner was in Hoffman being exposed to voters and the real possibility that people will stop voting along party lines.
He seemed the only normal human in all the elections last night.

I think Democrats need to start pandering to what independents want and when the Majority of Independents Side with Conservatives/Republicans they need to pay attention to the following! I think America is telling us something! Tell your Congressman not to support the 1.2 trillion Health Kill bill, Tell them not to support Cap and Tax, Tell them get the spending under control, Tell them we want smaller Government, tell them we do not want a Government that Dictates pay, Owns Banks, owns the Auto Industry or who is in Charge of Health Care! Does Health Care need some reform? Absolutely! But NOT in the form of 2000 pages of a 1.2 trillion pork filled partisan bill! Now is the time to tell your Congressmen if you Support this we WILL NOT support you in 2010 or 2012 we will keep throwing people out until they follow the will of the people!

Why are you lying to yourself it was the Moderates/Independents that were responsible for the Republican Victories, and Just a little update for you Just because ABC and MSNBC say that Scozzafava was a Moderate Republican does not make it fact Scozzafava was a Democrat end of story!

Posted by: nobama12 | November 4, 2009, 11:22 am 11:22 am

Sadly, the media seems to be paying scant attention to Owen’s win which is an important story. Also, I’d like to see the statistics on voter turn out by party in all of the elections.

Posted by: Dina | November 4, 2009, 11:25 am 11:25 am

Wrong! New York 23rd – The PAC group controlled Republicans got together to endorse the PAC group controlled Democrats to support, who else, themselves, graft, greed corruption and a PAC group controlled government. The winners were the PAC groups and the losers were the PEOPLE!!

Posted by: Jim Jordan | November 4, 2009, 11:37 am 11:37 am

nobama12, you could be more wrong. The PAC groups own BOTH parties. We Independents have no intention of pandering to EITHER party! Nor is our vote for sale. We want good, clean honest government. To heck with all the nay sayers. We want something positive for a change!

Posted by: Jim Jordan | November 4, 2009, 11:52 am 11:52 am

Well George is going to try to paint the best picture of this. He should have pointed out that a three point win over a split GOP led by Hoffman ( who many perceived as a three week campaigning carpetbagger) does not bode well for the Dems. Also, doesn’t he have any comment on Virginia (18pt GOP win) and NJ (5pt. GOP win despite the presence of a conservative candidate who siphoned off 6%). And the White House whines that FOX News is too partisan?

Posted by: country cuz | November 4, 2009, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

nobama12, you could NOT be more wrong! BOTH Republicans and Democrats are political prostitutes! The care about only one thing: PAC money. What in the world make you believe they even care about what you or I think?

Posted by: Jim Jordan | November 4, 2009, 12:06 pm 12:06 pm

To say Liberals are smarter than conservatives is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. Most of Wall Street is conservative. Its the Liberals who want everyone to throw thier hard earned money in a pot and let everyone “share” because it is the right thing to do. Liberals want handouts.

Posted by: Jeremy | November 4, 2009, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

“He should have pointed out that a three point win… does not bode well for the Dems.”
It does in a district that hasn’t voted for a Dem representative in 40 years!!!
If Hoffman had won, they would be crowing about how it was a great victory for right-wing extremism. Instead the “party of personal responsibility” has a hard time taking the blame for their failures.
It’s time you guys faced the truth – Sarah and Co. snatched defeat from a district that y’all should have won easily.

Posted by: OB-Wan222 | November 4, 2009, 4:12 pm 4:12 pm

Nice spin, George, but the losers are Steele and Gingrich. Palin is not the loser…she is actually a winner in this for the Conservative candidate to get that much support, and to knock the liberal Republican out. They wanted to send the party base a message, and they did, win or lose.

New Jersey and Virginia have long records of electing governors from both parties BASED ON LOCAL ISSUES.
The notion that this reflects a discontent with the federal level is ludicrous, considering they are electing “local officials” to run “local business.”
That inherently makes voting to send a msg. to DC by choosing a certain candidate absurd, because that could easily result in choosing an incompetent local leader for four years resulting in endless wasted time and money – for what – to send a msg. to DC?
Pundits who spout this nonsense need to get their head out of their hole.
Furthermore, the Republicans who were elected were TYPICAL OF THE NORTHEASTERN Republican, moderate in most ways that matter to people, and thus completely disconnected from the Republicans in DC.
THE REAL MSG. from this election is in the NY Race, where a libertarian/conservative was nominated in defiance of the party local leadership.
It showed exactly what I’ve been saying since the 2008 Republican washout.
If Republicans as a party decide to move further right, all they need to do is look to California for their fate.
They also moved further to the right, when they were kicked wholesale out of Ca. Govt. offices.
The result has been a shrinking minority, whose sole power comes from their ability to stymie the super-majority necessary to pass the budget.
Beyond that they are inignificant politically, because being the “opposition or alternative” is NOT enough to fuel a comeback against even the incompetent Dems of California.
You need real solutions to real problems and a real desire to help the average person vs. a vs. corporations and banks.
The Republicans there and Federally keep offering the same failed idea, blame government for everything, even after a decade of watching as the saintly corporations and banks destroyed our economy.
Bottom line is, no matter who the democrats RUN FOR NATIONAL OFFICES, if Hoffman indicates the future Republican candidate, Republicans are going to stay the small minority they are, and be seen more and more for what they are the Southerner’s Party.
Dems. won’t ever be seen as perfect, honest, caring Etc., but as long as your competition the Republicans are seen as out-of-touch, slightly insane libertarian right wingers, they don’t have to be to win against them.

I agree. The loser was the RINO. Thank you Mr. Hoffman. I’m sorry you didn’t pull it out, but it sends a strong message to the Republicans. We’re sick of the left-wing big-spending hypocrites that you seem to nominate. Conservatives unite! Time to let the Democrats & Republicans fight for the liberals & moderates. Let’s get our own party started and put this country back on track.

Posted by: Paul | November 4, 2009, 10:05 pm 10:05 pm

We the people need a viable 3rd party. The Dems and Repubs are run by their far ends ignoring their sane center groups. It is however unfortunate that neither of the 2 realize the way it is here in the real world. I would like to see them all voted out come 2010 and I really do not care if they are replaced by more idiots. At least the new idiots will not have as much power amassed.

Posted by: pabaz | November 6, 2009, 2:20 pm 2:20 pm

It seem both sides are partly correct. Scozzafava was, in many, maybe most respects, a RINO. But Hoffman, especially with the backing of Palin, who is much more a social conservative than a fiscal one, is a tough sell in a district that is not dominated by bible thumpers and snake kissers. A socially moderate fiscal conservative would probably have beat both of them.
