“You Guys Make a Pretty Good Photo Op,” President Obama Jokes to Troops at Osan Air Base

SEOUL, South Korea — On his way back home, President Obama stopped at Osan Air Base in South Korea, greeting roughly 1,500 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, many in camouflage, in an airport hanger.

Before a crowd of troops holding cameras and cell phones, the president joked, "you guys make a pretty good photo op."

The president said he was there to share "the gratitude of the American public," and he added, "America's commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea will never waver."

"This is an alliance rooted in sheer sacrifice, common values, mutual interests and a mutual respect," he said. "And as we look to the future, with a shared vision of our alliance in the 21st century, I made it clear America's commitment to the Republic of Korea will never waiver and our alliance has never been stronger."

Not surprisingly, after the president noted he was increasing military pay he received a big cheer.

"That's what you call an applause line in the business," the president joked.

On his way back to his aircraft, in response to a question shouted from a reporter as to how his trip was, the president said, "It was great. We got a lot of work done."

Proves again this president is clueless.

One would think that with two radar dishes strapped to the sides of his head, barry clownshoes would be clued in a bit more with his “jokes”.
This latest bit of “humor” is especially egregious in light of the contortions he is undertaking to avoid making a decision in Afghanistan.

I am waiting for ABC news to do an
investigative report on the waste and
fraud related to the taxpayers money that
has gone down the toilet with the
great stimulus plan. Come on ABC, even
if you thought it was a good idea, you
have to be mad that there is nothing to
show for it. Get on the side of the
American public. I long for the days
when we could count on the press to show
us things we could not have access to.
This stimulus package make Bernie
Madoff look like a boy scout. Please
expose the corruption in this no matter
who gets caught in the process. We
deserve to know. I would hope others
would join in and ask that there be
an investigation and NOT one done by
the people who are tied up in it.

Like the military in particular, or everybody who despises Obama’s march toward a social-democratic America that would be indistinguishable from European cradle-to-grave welfare states?

wis134, I too am waiting on ABC news to do some investigative reporting on the so called Stimulus and ACORN and Chris Dodd and Charlie Rangel and that little weasel senator from Illinois,no not Obama,Roland Burris.ABC doesn’t have a clue on any of these just ask Charlie Gibson about ACORN for instance. How they can masquerade as a news organization is a mystery.

Why haven’t Republicans come out and publicized all this mythical “waste and fraud”? You know every member of the caucus has been scouring the country for an instance of fraud, kickbacks or a bridge to nowhere. Why do you think they’ve failed to find anything?
The stimulus money is going to exactly what it was intended to. The only failure so far has been a buggy public disclosure website (which still offers the most transparency of any major spending program in history) and a significant lag in spending (due to all the reporting required to prevent fraud).
I’m sure there is fraud and waste in the stimulus program, but at this point the government looks to be doing as well or better than any major private corporation in avoiding it. (Unless you’re a Republican and thought that the quarter trillion in tax breaks and half trillion in infrastructure, research, and unemployment aid money was a waste to start with.)

Posted by: Jason | November 20, 2009, 8:42 am 8:42 am

What really makes me mad is that he has no appreciation for the sacrifice that our soldiers and their families make. It really rubs us the wrong way when he does not give the military the proper respect and when he uses any opportunity to try and deflect criticism from himself at the expense of others.

jhw359 says: “Why haven’t Republicans come out and publicized all this mythical “waste and fraud”?”
Try checking out conservative blogs and watching Fox news. There are a whole lot of examples and a whole lot of attention being paid to the waste and incompetence of the federal government. The recovery.gov website is a joke, but it has served to highlight how few jobs have been created with a large amount of money.

LOL, you are really delusional. If any company public, private, or otherwise ran their business the way that the government has been running the stiumulus, they would be out of business and under investigation by shareholders and government alike. What kind of work do you do jhw? Do you work for an evil corporation or do you work for the government?

Beware of people who suggest we might actually learn something by checking out right-wing propaganda. Surveys have shown that people who watch Fox are far less likely to be able to answer basic questions about current events correctly. It’s not news, it’s tabloid entertainment.

Too bad he was too busy to go to the major military hospital in Europe during his campaign swing through Germany last year.I would still like a real reason how Barack Obama could write an extensive description of meeting his brother in Kenya in 1988 in “Dreams…” and then admit this week that he met him “only a couple of years ago”.May be the first meeting was a photo-op.

Posted by: Nephron | November 20, 2009, 10:07 am 10:07 am

And many people–not just conservatives– support the troops. In fact, some of us on the left–even “liberals”– have friends or relatives fighting in Iraq or the Middle East or who have been there and even stop-lossed. That always seems to be quite a shock to conservatives. Some of us have lost loved ones–friends, family– in war or have relatives who served in WWII, Viet Nam, the Gulf War.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -14.
Today’s results match the lowest Approval Index rating yet recorded for this President and it’s the third straight day at -14. Prior to these three days, Obama’s ratings had fallen to -14 on only one day since taking office.

It’s okay if we disagree who does or does not do good to the country. I respect how you restrained yourself on the last comment. I’d ask you to please use the same common sense to understand that the President wouldn’t mention the photo op quote if he was serious. Imagine for one moment without the partisan mask if a President who was elected by the people would call visiting the troops a photo op in front of cameras.

simply pitiful. Politicians are now, basically, reality show contestants or movie stars. We even had a real movie star as President! This is a big problem. None of them on the premier stage recently seem to really care about the country, the troops, or anything except re-election, lining the pockets of their cronys, and in the accolades&power. By no means is Obama is the only one. It started a while ago. I guess Kennedy really started it. But Obama has maximized it to the final degree: weird propaganda-like symbology, empty rhetoric (who can be against “hope” and anytime there is an election there is “change”), global jet-setting, parties at the WhiteHouse, more golf games than Bush even. Amazing, and sad.

Although they say there is truth in humor, his comment was most likely off the cuff. But it reminded me that everything is scripted in all WH administrations. We have had such a strong presence in S. Korea, I see no way he could have NOT have visited the troops. If it was not to their advantage, it would take a strong character to insist on it anyway. I think the jury is still out on that one. It’s the “chameleon” in him (my perception) that makes me suspicious.
However, he could just be growing an appreciation for the military. It is certainly my story. I did not serve but have grown to appreciate all service men and women and veterans. A couple of years ago I helped my dad write his memoirs of WWII so we could print them up for the family. (I highly recommend doing that.) My wife smiles whenever I see a vet because she knows that’s where I’m headed next – to thank them for their service.
As long as we’re plugging our favorites “groups,” I would like to say that many Christians have also served bravely in all our wars and, IMO, the majority of Christians are not “zealots” as they are many times portrayed. Millions of men and women throughout our history have bravely served their God and their country. It pains me to see them all painted with the same broad brush.

President Obama will dip below 50% in Gallup’s daily tracking poll for the first time today.
The organization updates it’s numbers at 1PM ET, but they’ve put out advance word this morning that Obama will dip below the half-way mark.
Obama’s current rating stands exactly at 50%, so assuming he drops to only 48% or 49%, the dip would be more symbolic than statistically significant. Nevertheless, it will be a stark reminder that Obama’s political cache isn’t what it once was.

The massive spending we have committed to should have stopped this after 10 months and we should be ticking back into the positive range. Job hemorraging continues and the infamous “trickling up” affect Obama supports is not working and will not work.
“The Labor Department said the 2,127 mass layoff actions reported in October — defined as job cuts involving at least 50 people from a single employer — was down 434 from September. The layoffs affected 217,182 workers, down from 248,006 in September. Mass layoff events were down by 77 from October 2008.” – Reuters

you miss the whole point “Obama2012″. Although that is unsurprising considering your moniker. Cult victims, like the mentally ill, cannot always recognize their plight. The point is that the Presidency under Bush was a joke also but Obama is taking it to even higher levels. Cult-like adherents, chanting/singing songs to “dear leader” (including children), weird symbology, he himself proclaiming himself “the one” and that a “light” will shine down upon you and tell you to vote for him?! And, obiviously, the photo ops, parties, golf, and spending of Obama that is far eclipsing Bush so far. Wake up and understand that because Bush was bad it does not follow that Barry S is good!

BUT, he WANTS the negative attention; he wants to be able to derisively laugh at his critics.
He knows ridicule is man’s most potent weapon and he will bait the right with tasteless remarks like this and bowing deeply to kings and emperors just to sneer at the right. It is calculated and devious.

Disingenuous at best, tierra. The ADL is not motive free. If you want to at least take a rational stance then take a few steps back and look down the spectrum towards the left. Olbermann is Beck’s polar opposite. Did the ADL denounce him when he was going after Bush? Um, nope. The partisan pendulum swings in both directions. People to the right of you aren’t the only ones it swings towards. It also comes back towards you and your viewpoints as well.

I agree Olbermann and Beck are polar opposites politically. But Beck doesn’t belittle and demean like Limbaugh and Olbermann do.
I personally can’t take Olbermann, Limbaugh or Matthews (who I used to always watch and has gone off the deep end).

Ed:
you miss the whole point “Obama2012″.

Particularly distrubing is the ease with with all of this administration will simply fabricate anything they want to push the personal agenda or obfuscate what they are really doing.
In rereading Huxley’s Brave New World, one is reminded of the shocking parallels with this group.
Obama=Our Ford
Rahm=Mustapha Mond
Napalitano, Sebiellus=Freemartins in charge of conditioning.
These folks would be funny if they were not so fanatical and ruthless.

It was Oprah and a John McCain ad that called him “The One.” I don’t remember Obama calling himself that name.
When it comes to symbology, Bush was known to throw the thumb and pinky “devil horns” hand symbols on occasion.
And don’t forget about the “Congress, Bush and FEMA” song, sung by a hundred Katrina children at the White House in 2006. Mmm mmm good.

Oh yeah, the “Dear Leader” moniker came from Michelle Malkin.

Serious circular logic going on here!
I think Obama is very insensitive to make such an insulting comment to our military. He must have been very tired or forgot his teleprompter.

So, the president made a few jokes. While it might be true that a president standing in front of thousands of soldiers, airmen, marines, and sailors, that does not mean that the president event thinks of them as a photo op. The fact that he was there shows appreciation. He could have done like Bush and photoshoped his video of the event in order to make it look like there were twice as many troops there. The singing children in that Chicago school were not the presidents doing. Those who make that claim conveniently forget that the address to the students was blocked and that the students did not see it, due to conspiracy theorists passing themselves off as journalists claiming that it was an attempt to indoctrinate the children. They successfully kept a sitting president from addressing school children…like several R presidents have done in the past. Students did not see the speech but they still call it indoctrination.
Stop letting Fox Noise channel do your thinking for you.

Another skeezy joke by a sly fox. Bickering aside, the man is one sadistic kit. He’s increasing pay so that he can rally more of the poor to send to war, now to an ever-dubious front in Afghanistan, then re-route them to Iran once he starts that debacle. Look at military movement people, our naval and base presence is only growing in a time that we are supposedly making a withdrawl of forces from the middle east. Instead of stabilizing the region we are once more throwing it into the jowls of uncertainty and inevitably pouring more American lives down the drain to clean it up. There exists foresight America, WAKE UP!
