All Aboard! Obama Reads “The Polar Express” To DC School Children

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: “To get in the right Christmas mood,” President Obama made a surprise visit to the Boys and Girls Club in NE Washington, DC this afternoon and read “The Polar Express” to about 25 boys and girls ranging in ages from six-years-old to eleven-years-old. After a boisterous reading of the holiday book – where at the times the president made a chuckling sound like Santa – Mr. Obama spoke to the kids about the real meaning of Christmas. “Even though there’s a lot of fun at Christmas, you know, you got — especially when it’s snowy like this, so it’s pretty outside, you got the Christmas tree, you got the Christmas cookies, you’ve got presents.  You know, I think that the most important thing is just to remember why we celebrate Christmas.  Do you know why?” The children’s hands shot up and one shouted out “the birth of the baby Jesus,” for which the president commended him. “The birth of baby Jesus, and what he symbolizes for people all around the world is the possibility of peace and people treating each other with respect,” Obama explained. “And so I just hope that spirit of giving that’s so important at Christmas, I hope all of you guys remember that as well.  You know, it’s not just about getting gifts but it’s also doing something for other people.” Having a little fun, the president asked the children what they want for Christmas this year, soliciting a wide variety of answers: IPods, the Harry Potter book, a play station portable, and a cell phone. “Whatever happened to like, asking for a bike?” the president joked of the tech-savvy responses. The kids said they already have bikes- one boy said he had three. Mr. Obama said the kids had all been good so passed out some Christmas cookies from a basket for the children: some cookies shaped like Bo the Obama’s dog, gingerbread, little Christmas trees, and maple leave cookies. The group of children are off of school today, the first day of DC public schools’ winter break. But the president used the chance to speak about the importance of working hard in school when they go back after break. “You guys have so much potential — one of you could end up being President some day.  But it’s only going to happen if you stay focused and you work hard in school.  And you guys — there’s nothing wrong with having fun and fooling around and playing sports and listening to rap music and all that stuff.  But I want you guys to read and hit the books and do your math, because that’s really what’s going to determine how you do in the future.” On his way out, Mr. Obama was challenged to a game of foosball if he returned. “You a good foosball player?,” Mr. Obama asked the boy. “I don’t like to get beat.” “I’ll let you win,” the boy responded. -Sunlen Miller

I’m happy that my son had the oppertunity to spend the time with President Obama. My son Nikko was the young boy in the story who challenged the president to a game of Foosball. He is still up to the challenge Mr. President.

Maybe your son could have asked him why he and his fellow Democrats just killed a bill that allowed inner city kids to attend private schools via vouchers? This is nothing but a shameless photo-op faithfully reported by state run journalists such as Ms. Miller.

there are things people could not understand the president, he is cool doing this, those kids are lucky, inner city people don’t pay tax, is that part of the reasons that the president does not support voucher for kids there?

People like Kate are far right partisan hacks who will hate anything the President does. No one on either side should have a problem when the President encourages school children to strive for the best.

I’m sorry, but I notice that in the majority of Obama’s photo ops, something is missing or set off to the side… can anyone guess what it is? Pull up a few photos and look hard at what’s missing or in the background.

I second that. I hope they had a wonderful time :>) I love when the President (all Presidents, either party) go out and spend time reading to and hanging out with kids like this.

Nicole,
Congrats to your son. He must have been thrilled. And, btw, I LOVE Foosball. An ace foosball player is tops in my book.

A shadow? A reflection in any window or mirror in the picture? A third dimension to president cardboard cutout? A clue?

Yes.. bring back GWB or another Repub.prez. That’s what this economy needs more influence from the right.. GWB about 2 years before he left.. signed into the Tax code law – the Forgiven Debt Act – check it out.. it hurts the people who are middle class and struggling the most. Go to the IRS website and search Forgiven Debt Act – what it does is if you make a deal with your creditors.. say you owe 10,000..and you deal it down to 5,000.. the difference of 5,000 you owe taxes on.. the year before last I made a deal ..and had to pay taxes on 6,200.00 .. Surprise.
GWB & Repubs – repealed all the regulations regarding our financial institutions.. Glass-Steagall could of prevented the mess we are in with the banks.. But thanks to Gramm and a couple of other congressman on the Repub side.. they started getting rid of it when Reagan was in..and slowly but surely we find ourselves in this mess.. Yea.. let’s put another Repub in.. along with the 2 wars.. CIA Bush Sr. CIA director.. assisted Osama & Saddam.. The WMDs that Saddam had came from Sr.Bush. Osama was given assistance from the Right in arms and training.. Anyone hear of Iran/Contra? Check that out.. also check out the S&L Bank Scandal – Bush Family was the center of that.. Bush & Cheney and others should all be in prison for the acts against humanity..

One other thing.. The Repubs check their candidates well – GWB’s grandfather assisted in Hitler’s rise financial backing…
I wouldn’t trust the Party of No even if hell froze over.

Mind-boggling read! I’m just starting out in SMO and now we are trying to catch on to how to best capitalize on social networking for my business.

I appreciate the information!
