Diction Watch: ‘Energy Independence Legislation’

Once called “cap and trade” legislation – a phrase that means nothing to tens of millions of Americans – the energy and environmental legislation making its way through Congress is now called “energy independence legislation” by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

He used the term in The New York Times Thursday, which was noticed by The Plum Line’s Greg Sargent, and I’m told that’s now the nomenclature.

Previously, the White House used the term “Comprehensive Energy Legislation.”

More hocus-pocus…
How about development of nuclear plants and extraction of oil and natural gas on our land and off our shores? Wouldn’t these actions provide some “independence”? More hypocrisy and lies.

If they Called it “Tax Every Bessed Thing” it wouldn’t pass… I’m suprised Rham didn’t call it “Free Beer” legislation, because who’s against “Free Beer”?

Whatever liberals call legislation, assume it produces the opposite result. This is no exception.
It’s all slick marketing and smoke and mirrors, just like Obama’s obscenely expensive and divisive campaign. Unfortunately for liberals, mainstream Americans are waking up and they are becoming increasingly unhappy about this administration’s constant assaults on their liberties, values, and lifestyles.

“And finally, the new framing better captures the notion of developing innovative, action-oriented solutions to serve as a catalyst for a rapid transition to an independent, clean, renewable energy economy full of future-oriented green technologies and jobs right here in the States.”
The framed legislation does not capture that notion.

‘Energy Independence Legislation’
The very definition of double speak.

Sorry if I have no sympathy for right-wing indignation after 8 years of Bush Administration nominal creativity including:
“Healthy Forests Initiative”
-using forest fires as an excuse to log public lands.
“Class Action Fairness”
which was only fair for big business, not families.
“Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act”
basically just a tax cut which critics argue did little to create any jobs or growth.
“No Child Left Behind”
forced standardizations that were detrimental to gifted and ambitious students.
“Clear Skies Act”
that actually would have allowed more emissions. I guess they thought the skies were too clear.

Thanks for listing those necessary information. We need more nuclear energy to withstand our energy needs.

How clever.
The AMC Pacer and Ford Pinto just needed rebranding too. Both were terribly misunderstood.

I’m wondering, if this is all so wonderful, why on earth does it need to be subsidized by the government? They should be making money hand over fist and not need tax payer money to accomplish their task.

“I’m wondering, if this is all so wonderful, why on earth does it need to be subsidized by the government?”
Because oil technology is well developed so renewable energy doesn’t pay yet. But it will not be the case forever. Those with foresight see that a portion of the investment in renewable energy may be recovered some day while every time Saudi Arabia sends over a supertanker full of oil we send back a supertanker full of money which is lost forever.

They change the name apparently because the cap and trade legislation has been tried in Europe and mostly failed.

Energy independence – Let’s generate 80 percent of our electricity from nuclear power plants like France. Let’s drill off the Florida and California coasts. We can do that now cleanly. Let’s tap ANWR – an Arctic desert. We can do that cleanly. Let’s use natural gas where possible, we have plenty of that. Sure we should use wind where it makes sense, like off the coast of Cape Cod. Solar is good, too.
But until you can tell me how a jet airliner is going to get airborne on wind or solar polar, forget the concept that “green” is the complete answer to energy independence.

Gee, where’s all the Democrats supporting Cap and Tax on this thread?
Funny how they make themselves scarce on those topics that won’t fly with even the most politically ignorant American.
