Fmr. Bush Official on TSA Vote: ‘We’ve Got to Move on Beyond the Union Issues’

ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: A former Bush national security official told ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” on Tuesday that Republicans should “move on beyond the union issues” which are currently being used by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., to block an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s pick to head the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). “We’ve got to move on beyond the union issues; they will get worked out, it’s an issue that the Department of Homeland Security has been working out since it was created six years ago,” said former Bush National Security official Gordon Johndroe. Watch it HERE. Johndroe, a longtime Bush aide who served the former president as spokesman for the National Security Council, thinks DeMint’s parliamentary maneuver is opening up Republicans a “little bit” to criticism from Democrats and predicted that the Senate would move “fairly quickly” to confirm the new TSA chief once Congress comes back into session given “the concern with aviation security right now and also to limit any potential criticism.” Two Senate committees have given their bipartisan blessing to Erroll Southers, a former FBI special agent and a counterterrorism expert who is Obama’s nominee. But DeMint has put a hold on a full Senate vote, saying he wants additional testimony to clarify Southers’s stand on unionizing the TSA, a policy shift Democrats support. Appearing on ABC’s “Top Line” following Johndroe, Republican strategist Kevin Madden predicted that the TSA appointment fight take a backseat to a broader election-year contrast on national security. “Republicans are not going to worry about TSA appointments and who is chairing what and whose getting what confirmation and instead it’s going to be about big things,” said Madden. “It’s going to be about the fundamental different worldview between Republicans and Democrats on how we prosecute the war on terror.” Watch it HERE. DeMint has responded to criticism of his decision to put a hold on Obama’s nominee by saying that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s alleged attempted attack in the skies above Detroit “is a perfect example of why the Obama administration should not unionize the TSA.” In his written statement, DeMint explained that if organized labor were involved in airport security, union bosses would have the power “to veto or delay future security improvements at our airports.” Rather than holding up the vote on the basis of union issues, Johndroe thinks the GOP should push for new aviation security measures. “We have to keep on moving forward and installing additional machines and having more personnel and doing more behavioral analysis to try and prevent what happened last week from happening again,” said Johndroe. Appearing on “Top Line” from ABC’s studios in downtown Washington, D.C., Johndroe criticized Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for initially responding to the “Christmas Day bomber” incident by saying “the system worked.” “The system only worked if the system includes a Dutchman on every flight that’s going to tackle a potential terrorist,” said Johndroe. Since telling CNN’s “State of the Union” that “the system worked” on Sunday, Napolitano has sought to clarify her remarks. Appearing Monday on NBC’s “Today,” Napolitano said, “Our system did not work in this instance . . . No one is happy or satisfied with that. An extensive review is underway.” Although Johndroe thinks President Obama should have spoken out more quickly on the Christmas Day bomber incident, he praised the president for the recent troop build-up in Afghanistan and his stated commitment to pursue terrorists around the world. “I think there are a lot of similarities” between the Obama Doctrine and the Bush Doctrine, said Johndroe.  “Sending additional troops into Afghanistan is something President Bush has started doing a couple of years ago. The situation on the ground changed so President Obama’s has had to send more. I think once they got into office, once President Obama became President, they realized that the nature of the threat was just global and the threat level was extremely high around the world, that the terrorists remain at war with us and that they were going to have to deal with it in a way similar to the Bush administration.” Tuesday’s edition of “Top Line” was co-anchored by ABC News correspondent David Kerley and ABC News’ deputy political director Teddy Davis. ABC News’ Kim Berryman contributed to this report.

If Obama doesnt get the guy he requested he will still have his czar so its a mute point, he has 40 czars you know. And they make big bucks but they will say it helps the jobless % and the economy.

WE do not need TSA to have to answer to union thugs!

I have yet to understand the correlation between national security and unionizing TSA. Perhaps some of the great thinkers on this website can inform myself and others similarly confused.

How did DeMint, all alone, put a full Senate vote on hold?
DeMint claims unions could veto changes to security. Since many other defense-related workers are unionized and have absolutely no say on policy, DeMint knows he’s full of it.
DeMint simply wants to deny workers the right to unionize and please the big businessmen who line his campaign chest with millions. DeMint must be frustrated that it’s taking so long to reduce the American middle class to the status of peons, when the boss-worker relationship will be just what DeMint sees as fair.

So once Obama got into office, he started waking up to reality and began doing or continuing things that Bush was doing. Then why are they bashing Bush?? Oh, just diverting attention away from their failures and incompetence. Whew, we have 3 more years of this stuff.

And the REST of the story is…. Democrats wanted this guy confirmed unanimously without him ever being interviewed. DeMint is forcing Reid to bring the vote to the floor, and for this guy to be vetted. Reid hasn’t done this yet. I agree with DeMint. The guy may be fine (we don’t need more unions!) but the Senate deserves to talk to him.

Unions once served a true purpose, to ensure that workers were not being abused by their employers and that their rights were protected. Over time, mostly to justify their continued existence, they have continued to make ever increasing demands on those employers, to the point that we can no longer compete with the labor markets overseas. The result of this is the exportation of vast numbers of jobs to other countries and the transformation of our nation from a producer to a consumer nation. Any cure can become worse than the disease if it is not regulated and maintained at its proper size and function. The same can be said about the Federal government, the income tax, welfare, etc… Once these ideas have grown past the original concept, they become monsters that cause more problems than they ever solved. Just a thought…

obama is totaly committed to the union movement in this country. It’s the base of his power, and they come first, not the seurity of the nation or any other factor. Unions will continue to be a factor in moving jobs off shore, except for government positions, that will be filled by minotities. Say what is a minotity these days?

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee already had a hearing on Mr. Southers, his nomination was unanimously approved.
The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation already had a hearing, where his nomination was also approved.

Unionized employees without a doubt get better pay, health benefits, and pensions that no one gets in non-unionized workforce. The public employee unions are responsible for the very generous wages and benefits that these American workers receive. We all pay taxes so the federal, state and local employees get generous wages and benefits, many of the unionized. To me it seems that unions are the way to go. I wish I had a union job especially for the government.

At the risk of sounding like a real American…..can someone tell me why so called “proud Americans” would fear unions more than the same people who committed the worst terrorist attacks on US soil? How are unions more dangerous than AlQaeda? To the best of my knowledge the nom. has not said one way o r the other on the issue but DeMint wants confirmation that he won’t support unions. Is this a reason to jeapordize the safte of the flying public? Whether you are a (D) or (R) these are the REAL questions we need to ask. All I read here are comments that relay you dislike of the president no real substance or rationale , just hate. That may work for the republicans but AMERICA deserves and needs better.

TSA moved with commendable speed after the Christmas incident. For the new airport security rules, look here:

war919 = you fail to mention the danger that Eisenhower warned of when he said beware the military/industrial complex. Corporate america is buying the best laws they can afford and we pay the price.
I’m tired of hearing people gripe about unions. I work in an industry which has outsourced alot of the work and now we are expected to work 50 hours a week and more on a regular basis – we are salaried so all we get is our base pay. I wish there was a union looking out for us.

The republicans are holding back alot of Obama’s nominees for vacancies. Obama is being treated much worse than Bush ever was.
I think we should start calling the republicans unpatriotic and unamerican.
