Napolitano: System Like ‘Clockwork ‘ After Attack, Not So Sure About Before
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told me this morning on “This Week” that “everything went according to clockwork” in how passengers, crew and the government reacted to the attempted bombing of Flight 253.
But she wasn’t so sure about how well the government performed before the incident.
The alleged bomber’s father had provided information to the U.S. embassy in Lagos that he was concerned about his son’s radical beliefs. Napolitano said that the government is doing a “minute by minute, day by day scrub” of what happened to information and how it was shared.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told me that a review will be done to make sure that there’s “no clog in the bureaucratic plumbing” that could have prevented the attack.

At least one person in the embassy in Lagos is incompetent. This is unbelievable and we should be outraged as american citizens. Where is the accountability?

Closing Gitmo (which still houses almost 100 Yemenis terrorists) should not be of the greatest importance to the Obama administration.
Top priority should be given to protecting the United States against terrorists.

Like clockwork, sure. A broken clock is right twice a day.

Barn Door. Horse. If this man was on the no fly list, why was he allowed on this plane? The Obama administration has softened or reversed some of the Bush administration policies. Did they loosen the no fly restrictions or, as the bomber was supposedly on his way to a ‘religious’ conference, was this a case of ‘tolerance’ gone wrong?

Incredible- we have a full jet load of crew and passengers spared death due to a malfunciton of a bomb and our Admin. claims everything worked like clockwork. This isn’t exactly being on top of things and staying ahead of terrorists is it?
Posted by: smac761 | December 27, 2009, 9:59 am 9:59 am
The most appalling part is that rather than try and keep suspected terrorists out, its easier for the so-called TSA to focus on making air travel for US citizens traveling within our own borders even more unbearable with yet another layer of ridiculous rules.
Posted by: John Harlow | December 27, 2009, 9:59 am 9:59 am
The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was on a government master list called the Terrorist Identities Datamart environment, or TIDE. Abdulmutallab did not appear on any subset list and would not have been prohibited from flying.
The terror suspect acquired his TIDE record in Nov. 2009. Around the same time the suspect’s father expressed concerns about him to the US Embassy in Nigeria.

I am amazed by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano response! We need leadership on this! I would feel much safer knowing that we prevent 550,000 suspects that are important enough to be on a watch list from entering our country. God Bless America.

I watched this news program this morning also, and “disgusted” is the only response I can come up with. It insults the Americans intelligence when our Administration can not answer a simple question honestly and straight-forward. Instead, around and around we go with circular evasive nonsense. Who’s the “pot calling the kettle black” now?

Bush, Cheny, Rumsfeld, Rove et al are wandering around as if they had nothing to do with the mess that they led America into. Its called “lack of accountability.” The same as when the FBI and the CIA were in a snit before 9-1 and refused to share intelligence info that could have stopped the attack. Their is no accountability. Why wasn’t a system in place that prevents a man who has been reported by his F A T H E R ! ! ! as dangerous! Duhhhhh! Get out of the mideast…enforce our borders, and bring Bush the warmonmgers that illegallly got America iinto this mess into a court of law! Forget Tiger Woods transgressions and punish those that illegally led us down this murderous, never ending road! Wake up America!

Napolitano’s whole “act” was repugnant to any concerned American regardless of political party. It was just spin and evasion. I’d have expected more real concern and less rah rah and CYA.

The audacity of dope. Special message to any lefties that really think that you can blame this in any way on Bush – get over it! (this means you hwoodude) You can’t keep blaming Bush for your failures. Bush set up the very same system that Napolitano is commending… but it’s the Obama War on Terror that removed the name from the blacklist. Do you always call the plumber when you forget to flush? Shouldn’t our main concern be how the government reacted before the terrorist act? Why is she the head of homeland security considering Phoenix has a major issue with kidnapping? Isn’t she the one who first started using the term man made disasters? Too many questions concerning her qualification if you ask me and too much is at stake.
Posted by: Texan 2112 | December 27, 2009, 10:32 am 10:32 am
Napolitano’s performance was deplorable. She looked and sounded smug as she smiled and lauded how well the system worked after the attempted terror instance. All the while she inexcusably ignored Jake’s critical questions: Why was he allowed on the train? Why was he not body searched b4 boarding? Why was he allowed to keep a multi entry visa?
The administration should be embarrassed. The American people should be outraged.

I grow more and more discouraged and disheartened by my country every day. We are governed and “led” by corrupt, arrogant, out of touch fools of both parties. I remember the day we landed on the moon, on that day America was unquestionably the greatest country in the world. I think that day will prove to be a high water mark for us. The bogus war in Iraq, the failed war in Afghanistan, the bank bailout, the disasterous health care reform bill, to name just the recent fiascos. We need to wake up as a country, set aside our partisan differences and take OUR country back. Vote out all incumbents and keep voting them out until we get some competency in office. Peace All

Jake,
You missed two opportunities in the interviews today. I am even handed here.
JN should have been asked, “if it was not for the alert passengers, the plane would have exploded in the sky. What you are defending is what happened AFTER he was overpowered. Why was he not apprehended before? The Consulates are under the Department of State while your department is under the Department of Justice. Is there any lack of cooperation between these two departments?”
To Mitch McConnell, you let him off easily but not probing deeper. It was his Republican colleagues who drove the economy off the cliff into the valley. Now why are they shedding crocodile tears over a deficit which the Congressional Budget Office has said will NOT increase the deficit? You should have persisted and got him to admit his hypocrisy!
Posted by: Pat | December 27, 2009, 10:39 am 10:39 am
The Secretary’s comments represent a virtual cover up of a highly defective security system, a system set up more to calm the air passengers than anything else. Pathetic response by the Secretary. How could a guy pay in cash, travel one way and not have luggage. Get serious!

Both Gibbs and Napolitino were disgraceful. And I loved the new take on how to blame Bush (whom I could not stand and did not vote for) — not sure how well the system worked in previous years, or words to that effect. In other words, it’s still Bush’s fault, even though Obama has had nearly an entire year to look this over.
Oh wait — he was too busy apologizing to everyone.
And Gibbs was absolutely disgraceful in saying the health care reform was done in the open. Jake should have hammered him more. Too much stuff to cover in too short a period of time, I’d say.

Nappyazz is the biggest joke around. She NEVER protected Arizona’s borders and still won’t let the borders be protected. Jake, why did you not ask the Secretary what she thought the response of the passengers on the plane would have been if they knew they were going to be flying with a person on the terrorist watch list ? Did she think it was okay not to give that relevant information to the passengers ?
The secretary’s performance in this interview was abysmal. Total lack of preparedness for the interview.I quit listening after she dodged every question, especially when she smiled all the way through it. What a loser. By the way I am a Democrat.

Maybe if homeland security spent less time strip searching 80 year old grandmothers , 5 year old children and pouring out breast milk, they would have TIME to follow up on CREDIBLE leads on muslim terrorists who had been reported by their parents. Instead t.s.a pushes further restrictions on all travelers. We can’t have racial profiling just because we have a specific problem with a specific group of people can we ?

To Timothy Pennell: The Secretary of Homeland Security is not stupid what is stupid is the brilliant government take over of airport security by Bush and as usual he forgot to fund it. They apparently don’t have the funding to upgrade airports with devices that detect explosive residue or continuing education for the TSA personnel. The TSA is still operating on the assumption that everything dangerous is metal.
So if anybody is going to get us killed its the lack of funding to the very people who stand between us and a terrorist boarding a jet. Doesn’t it make you feel safe to know the best machinery they have is a metal detector.

Hats off to the heroic response of the passengers. The natural instinct would have been to have beaten the guy to death but it’s best he lived so he can be “interrogated” – I only wish that the FBI had the use of all the tools of their trade. The failure here was at the State Dept, the Amsterdam airport, Delta Airlines (except for the flight crew), and Homeland Security – which remains focused on harassing all while proving toothless against those who mean to kill us by the hundreds.
Posted by: Tom | December 27, 2009, 11:26 am 11:26 am
The only real way to properly screen people at airports is the way the Israelis do it, that is, by profiling passengers according to their behavior, looking for Islamic extremists.
Of course, we’re not allowed common sense in this country – it would help if our POTUS actually loved his country.

Chertoff was not much better and Ridge was a buffoon. This should be a bi-partisan decision to put someone in charge who understands the threat and can lead & motivate the boots on the ground. Action 1: Fire the TSA liaison in Amsterdam. Action 2: Recall the ambassador to Nigeria for consultations. Action 3: The President should send word in whatever form or fashion he cares to use that NO ONE in Yemen is beyond the reach of our anger.

Maybe that’s why they’re saying everything worked ‘like clockwork’. I think it’s so the TSA can get everyone to go through even more restrictions and to get everyone to go through those new body scans. Interesting the very next day there was news of these new body scans and how they’re wanting to implement those in our nation’s airports. Only something like this would get everyone to do that.
What they don’t realize and don’t want you to know is that all of the added security measures imposed on us here at home will do nothing to prevent someone from getting on a plane in Nigeria with explosives.

Homeland Security had NOTHING to do with stopping this attack but did manage to keep him off the no-fly list and grant him a multiple ENTRY VISA INTO THE US!! Where’s that report Jake or didnt the government dictate that information to you? The passengers and crew put out the fire and subdued the terrorist. HS met him at the airport before an ambulance took him to the hospital. Meanwhile Jake puts on his skirt and pumps and gushes over his access to his beloved government. D-

In both cases of 9/11 and flight 253, the government has enough intel. beforehand to prevent its occurrence. Apparently, the ‘clockwork’ mentioned by Janet Nap. does not seem to work well; it can not pass information from one hand to other. In the case of 911, the government could simply order airline to lockup all the cockpit door after take-off so no body can enter to hijack the plane. In the case of 253, the terrorist should be put in the no flight list after his father’s warning to US embassy.

We should have caught this but failed. We are looking into ways to correct the error”. Then again, to admit failure would be to show they are human, so I guess that will not happen in this administration.

I can imagine the terrorists are shaking in their boots because of Aunt B. (see Andy Griffith show for all younger than 40) Individuals need to take matters in their own hands in situaltions like this, unfortunately the guy who stopped him will probably get sued for denying him the right to blow up Americans. The ACLU and ACORN will be there to help with his case.

What a stupid comment. The on;ly reason this plane did not explode and crash into the city and killed hundreds if not thousands was because the detonator failed. What would she have said then???? That the goverment worked like clockwork to clean up the bodies???? What an administration, at least Bush kept us safe.

How can Janet Napolitano (who does not want to use the word terrorist) be in charge of the terrorist watch list? According to her own words, it should be called the “man-made disaster” list. Just doesn’t sound right, does it? Political correctness didn’t save flight 253 … it was sheer luck. Wake up America.

Why hasn’t Obama commented on the latest terror attack? Has he admitted that Fort Hood was a terror attack too? Oh Yeah, he is on vacation and can’t be bothered with things like a terror attack. It might affect his golf game.

There is nothing “clockwork” about the lack of security before or after – actually there is no security at all! The TSA is nothing more than a “feel good” agency to provide a false sense of security to the flying public. There is an incompetent security apparatus in place for the flying public. It existed before this incident and it exists after this incident. The TSA has no clue.

Profiling works. It is how crimes are prevented and solved. Yep, it can be abused, but without it we have blown up planes.
Also, who cares if this database has 550K names on it? Any decent computer can scan for a match in a second or two. So screen ‘em. Just because it’s a “huge” database is NO reason to NOT use it. That is amateurish and illogical. Why even have the database if you plan to use its size as the reason to not query it?
As for “The system working” – one of the dumbest things ever said by a Cabinet official. She should be gone w/in a month. Of course, Gibbs should step down as well. He editorializes with HIS views too often. He’s supposed to relay the President’s views.

It is disturbing to note that a person who received the Nobel Piece Prize a few months ago has betrayed all those who had hope in him. Since receiving this lofty accolade Mr. Oblama has personally ordered unwarrented stealth missle attacks from unnamed and unseen platforms killing thousands of innocent people just fighting for their religious expression. A jihad is a prayer for some. How can the American call himself a man of peace? he needs to give the award back.

I agree with what Paul Krugman said later in the program. No security system involving millions of people is going to be 100% effective without being so expensive that nobody will be able to afford to fly. Striving for perfection certainly should be our goal, actually achieving it on the other hand…the blame for the inevitable very small failure rate will inevitably be kicked around like a political football.

The most important part of this is being missed. Pay special attention, leftards. This was pure dumb luck. You have possibly the most unpopular president the first year in office, and all it will take is one successful attack and your Hope and Change becomes Hopeless and Out Of Office. You should re-consider your words carefully, because “it’s all Bush’s fault” is getting real real old. You’re the ones that spent the last 8 years telling us there was no threat, after all – what now? A few things are now painfully obvious: 1) there really was and is a terrorist threat, 2) closing gitmo or electing obama had zero effect on that threat, in fact it emboldened them, and 3) removing the Patriot Act will not keep us safer.

I’m retired law enforcement. I always explained to the victims that their loss was mostly their fault. Not only should they have locked their cars, they should have bought the device for the steering wheel and an expensive alarm. They should have installed lights all around their house that burn in all hours of darkness and overcast weather to go with the top of the line video system, covering every square inch of their property. In Detroit that’s 24/7/365. When they walk in the neighborhood, they need to call neighbors to walk with them. Robbers seldon stick up a pack of twelve people. When we patrolled the neighbor hood, one of us was always awake. In truth, we told them, if them want lower crime they need to live someplace else.
The same is true of flying. If you don’t want thrills, don’t fly. This government of kissy-face sweetie-pies is not going to protect you. Mr. O’Hamma’s PhD is in making excuses and ignoring reality. A “Wake Up Call” for this administration means that they wake up and blame someone else – like George.

You wanted the “knee jerk” reaction well here it is! It is time for the traveling public to write the TSA and the airlines and say they have had enough! The DHS let another one slip through the cracks and now they have to cover their butts. Write the carriers and tell them you have had enough, tell them they need to unite and stand up to the TSA. Many frequent fliers are about to get into our cars, not traveling at all or use video teleconferencing. Too bad the same inept government runs the passenger rail service or rail travel would be an alternative.

Me too.
I note that the many counterterrorism successes seem to get very little play in comparison.
Marc Ambinder at Atlantic Monthly has an interesting post up about President Obama’s strategy in all this. He writes: “There is a reason why Obama hasn’t given a public statement. It’s strategy.
Here’s the theory: a two-bit mook is sent by Al Qaeda to do a dastardly deed. He winds up neutering himself. Literally.
Authorities respond appropriately; the President… presides over the federal response. His senior aides speak for him, letting reporters know that he’s videoconferencing regularly, that he’s ordering a review of terrorist watch lists, that he’s discoursing with his Secretary of Homeland Security.
But an in-person Obama statement isn’t needed; Indeed, a message expressing command, control, outrage and anger might elevate the importance of the deed…Obama is willing to risk the accusation that he is “soft” on terrorism or is hovering above it all…(his “head’s in the sand, “golfing comes first,” )in order to advance what he believes is the proper collective response to a failed act of terrorism.
Let the authorities do their work. Don’t presume; don’t panic the country; don’t chest-thump, prejudge, interfere, politicize (in an international sense), don’t give Al Qaeda (or whomever) a symbolic victory; resist the urge to open the old playbook and run a familiar play.”
Makes sense to me. I hate that a certain predictable subset of the right wing immediately goes into panic mode.

If she keeps saying everything worked like clockwork I’m going to keep thinking they knew this was going to happen and that in the end ‘everything worked like clockwork’ just like it was supposed to. Were they testing the something? Testing the response to this? Was this to get people to endure more stringent invasive security screenings? What does she mean “everything went according to clockwork” in how passengers, crew and the government reacted to the attempted bombing of Flight 253.

The reason why you did not hear about the counter-terrorism successes under the Bush administration is because they followed standard op-sec procedures-never let the enemy know what you know, unlike these rank amateurs in the Obama administration. The system did NOT work, any fool can see that. The plane was lucky; some of the prior hard-core Al Qaida would have been able to correctly detonate the device.Of course, most of the hard-core operatives were killed in Iraq-even the leadership of Al Qaida has admitted to that fact.

The Secretary praised the actions of passengers, yet the government has not had any systematic effort to educate and train passengers on what to do in this kind of emergency. There have already been three examples of passengers rising to the occasion: the Northwest flight, the Shoe Bomber flight, and United 93 on 9/11. Billions have been spent on technologies that have never gone beyond the test and evaluation stage, and nothing has been spent to enhance a proven line of defense. Perhaps I’m cynical, but if there were the possibility of a private company making a huge profit from educating passengers, then maybe there would be something in place today.

I am continually amazed at the liberal capacity for denial. When Bush was in office, they harped on every burp and hiccup of the anti-terror apparatus… now they just seem so reasonable! Well, even Paul Krugman says a few can slip through. And another lib on this forum suggests that we should even expect a little risk if we fly. Wow, what an amazingly unified country this would be if you all behaved so reasonably the last eight years. Why isn’t illinois GITMO2? Because Obama’s running it. Why is government failing to keep us safe? It isn’t Obama’s just doing the best he can with Bush’s baggage! Why do the terrorists still hate us? Well, because of Bush, don’t you know. Broken record.

At some point you have to wonder about all these “conferences” these guys seem to attend. A few weeks ago it was several making noise on an Airtran flight, before that it was the flying Imams. And then you have to wonder about this guy who had himself traveled to some of these “conferences” himself; last year to Houston.
A man from a good family, attending college in London…where do they get the brainwashing at? If at Mosque then you have to wonder about all the work being done in our country by radical elements who not only are free to do so in the privacy of their worship centers but they apparently work the prisons with equal enthusiasim.
Our officers and protectors have their work cut out for them and none of this should be political finger pointing.

Frankly, this is a difficult balancing act by any government agency. I disagree with her comments, but can we afford to pay for the increased costs to stop these terroists? This does mean more time for passenger checking if before the flight. AND, any increased screening of passengers will cause the ACLU to object because of contstitutional rights. I, personally, want to be more on the safe side.

Only fanatical right-wingers think believing Bush administration’s complete failure to read intelligence reports and stop the 9/11 attacks and then start an incredibly expensive ill advised war to distract attention away from their original negligence is reasonable.

The would be bomber’s father was heroic, too. That took a lot of courage and must have been heavy on his heart, proves some have a conscience. Hope he doesn’t suffer any blowback from his reported actions even though they weren’t followed through like one would hope.
For regular airline travelers, I was wondering how safe recurring scans would be. Anybody know? Suppose it’s not a good question to ask but I was wondering.

keredte you have hit it right on the mark no matter what other people say or want to believe. To say “it worked like clock work” is very disturbing, but the state controlled meadia will not see it that way. They are going keep doing this until the american people wont be able to walk outside their own house.
If northwest airlines is part of the united states airline system should that not include flights everywhere for the no fly list. No those two countrys are not part of the US but the planes are. This should be looked into. Right. Their are US citizens that are no fly lists for less then want this guy tried to do. Why would the Homeland security be involved if the planes were not part of the us. It doesnot matter where something happens it always ends up for MORE security for the US then it does anywhere else. why is that. HERE IS THE PROBLEM AGAIN, King said said authorities did have “a file on him. He was in a database, but the decision was made that he did not go on a no fly list because it did not involve aviation threats, aviation issues.” Congress to investigate. This will end up the exact same senerio as the sad case at Ft Hood, in why bother pointing fingers the blame game nothing gets solved. Again if homeland security was involved they should have known to put this guy on the no fly list in any country with amrican flights.
They seem to watch everybody but the people they need to

Look, realistically, we are not going to be able to stop every terrorist attempt or attack. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be as thorough as is reasonable, but there has to be a balance between rational caution and overreaction. Let’s see how this unfolds before we speculate further.
I am always disturbed by the number of incendiary commenters on news sites who jump to conclusions. Do you have enough information yet to draw any conclusions? No, you don’t.

There have been three dry runs in the last month aboard planes in the U. S. Obama and his moron Homeland Security Director focus on returning veterans as “man caused” terror risks. TSA releases their handbook on handling terror in the skies. The man’s father contacts our government about his son’s dangerous behavior. He is on a watch list. But they allow him to fly and refuse to target middle eastern and Muslim flyers. PC you know. Obama shuns and insults our traditional allies and curries favor with those who hate the U.S. He condemns our country overseas. (it’s not his country) His generals encourage Muslim fanatics in the army which results in deaths at Ft. Hood. His FBIDirector IMMEDIATEY announce there is not terror connection with the killer BEFORE any investigation takes place. Obama projects weakness. He invites terror attacks. His press cover for him over and over.
Posted by: mickeymat | December 27, 2009, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm
I’m sorry, but it is very possible to prevent terrorist attacks. Instead of rolling over and die we should make sure it never happens. This attitude of “well, why worry about it, it’s going to happen anyway” is very counter-productive and shows how we’d rather just let it happen than have to think about it. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t feel the same way if your daughter or father were on one a plane that blew up. When you chose to fly, you give up certain rights in exchange for being alive. But the way TSA is running things, I can only expect an attack to be successful, sadly.
And really, instead of fighting amongst yourselves about politics, you should be focusing on your contribution for making future travel safer for all because these criminals do not give a damn whether you’re a democrat or republican, you’re just all infidel American scum to them. But until we stop acting like children, we will always be too busy and distracted by our need to always push our views on each other instead of being one people.

“…we are not going to be able to stop ever terrorist attack”-and yet that is exactly what happened during the Bush administration after 9/11-no successful attacks on the homeland(there were unsuccessful attempts,I assure you).Since Jan. 20, at least one successful attack (Ft. Hood) and this lucky break of an incompetent terrorist- had it been an experienced Al Qaida operative almost certainly 270 would have died. The Obama administration does noy take the terrorist threat seriously and Americans have died and more will die. This is the price of electing a completely incompetent leader. For all his faults George Bush kept this country safe.To quote Rev. Wright:”The CHICKENS are coming home to ROOST!”

First of all, the Anthrax attacks after 9/11 were successful, people were killed.
And this is the second failed detonation of this type of material.
People will remember the ‘shoe bomber’ who made it through security and attempted the same thing – on the BUSH watch AFTER 9/11.
So, it was the same situation; security did not detect the bomber – passengers stopped the attack.

Let’s see what Napolitano’s qualifications are. She’s a lawyer. How many lawyers do you know that you would entrust the security of our country to? But wait, isn’t that the only real qualification that Obama has (oh my, are we in trouble?). Then she was the Governor of Arizona (that must be it). But wait, wasn’t Palin a governor also? Doesn’t the left portray governors (i.e. Palin and Bush) as too stupid to tie their own shoes? Wasn’t Janet the one that said acts of terrorism should be called “man-caused-disasters”? Wasn’t it her department that said “troops returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were at risk for being recruited by right-wing extremists”? What about putting the TSA Screening Manual on line? At least with Palin, that on a clear day you REALLY can see Russia from Alaska.

Obama needs to fire Napolitano immediately. He needs to say that the buck stops with her, and she needs to pay the consequences. Only then will you reduce the odds of a second lapse. Also, Napolitano used poor judgment defending the security system. The only way it could be defended is if part of the plan was to rely on Al Queda detonation failure; surely that wasn’t in anybody’s playbook, especially since Richard Reed pulled the same stunt before. Good grief.

Tapper got this right. Napolitano must think that everyone but her is stupid. Please explain to me why we are going to be locked in our seats for the last hour of a flight – without even the distraction of our computers or headsets. Why do this? It is not the MO of the hijackers to use computers or i pods. And what does locking us in do for our safety. The TSA is broken lets not allow them to bully us around to cover up their incompetence – not withstanding what the Secretary tried to characterize an perfect operation.

Makes sense to me. I hate that a certain predictable subset of the right wing immediately goes into panic mode.

Do you realize how many innocent Americans are going to ultimately die as a result of this ignoramous? Imagine being on a plane, going down, the last moments of your life–all because of the this idiot who has ZERO sense of urgency/priority on the fanatic MUSLIM TERRORISTS that want you and your children dead.

They used to restrict movement out of your seats for the final 1/2 hour before landing at Reagan National. It was no big deal, but I really doubt that it added much to security. It is another”back to the future” measure without much point. This is what you have when amateurs run the show.New security measures should be confidential, but Gov. Janet would rather shoot her mouth off and tell the terrorists how to avoid the new tactics. If she stays there will be blood.

The vast array of ignorance from the posts so fasr is truly amazing. lmost all of the people actually doing the real-time work in the Dept. of Homeland Security are pretty much the same people that were there since the department was formed. Changing the Secretary really doesn’t change much of anything. anybody who thinks tht you can stop every act of terrorism is just fooling themsleves.

We have choices: Either replace these dangerous buffoons at the ballot box soonest, or take measures such as the Founding Fathers did to toss out King George III and his Parliament’s stranglehold on America.
For the record, under Premier Obama’s watch, in the less than the first full year of his ascendency, there have been three terrorist attacks within the sovereign borders of the U.S.: the murder of the soldiers at the North Little Rock, Ark., recruiting station; the Ft. Hood massacre of soldiers and a civilian by a self-avowed Soldier of Allah Muslim jihadist; and now this Northwest-Airlines incident almost at DTW.
Someone soon is going to have to have the testicularity to call Obama’s hand on breaking his oath of office through his direct or indirect actions.

Let’s see—we are at risk from any overseas flight that comes from a country where antiterrorism protocols aren’t absolutely rigorous.
For example, the Kiwis are quite pro-Arab, and I know from personal experience (having been a Permanent Resident) that their security protocols on LEAVING the country are ridiculous. Everyday non-stops fly from Auckland to Honolulu and San Francisco.
It’s not “right-wing” to not want to be blown up. Bush and Cheney did a much better job than this clown.

Amazing! No wonder we lost the Viet Nam war…no wonder Bush was president for 8 years….no wonder more troops were sent to the middle east. 11 men with box cutters brought American to it’s knees. Now we are fighting men with exp[osives in their underwear and I don’t mean Tiger Woods! What is wrong with out country?!!
Homeland Security? Say what? Oboma..where is the leadership you claimed you were capable of? This Homeland Securioty “leader” rambled on that “everything went according to plan?” And that plan was?? To have the Nigerian man be within seconds of detonating his under pants when a quick thinking Dutch man jumped on him and evidently grabbed a fuse that was to detonate a bomb and he disabled it? WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP IN OUR COUNTRY? WE give billions to Israel, allow almost open U.S. Mexican borders, spend 8 years trying to train Iraq troops that are worthless in combat…blah, blah, blah….when is this going to change?!
Posted by: hwoodude | December 27, 2009, 11:22 pm 11:22 pm
O-dummy was within one defective fuse of a defining moment for his presidency. 290 dead on Christmas from a terrorist who was already on their list but did not face a special inspection that would have spotted the bomb because of bureaucratic incompetence. And now his head of HHS talks about how it was like clockwork! My God. Next time we won’t be so lucky.
Posted by: Seriously Worried | December 27, 2009, 11:35 pm 11:35 pm
We had six months warning on this guy – and that from his own father. Nothing was done.
The guy was on some watch lists, not all.
He was able to board a flight to the US with no passport.
Napolitano, who previously changed ‘terrorism’ to man-caused disasters and couldn’t see the problem with illegal immigration now says the system worked like clockwork and that there was no suggestion the bomber was improperly screened.
No word from Obama.
Napolitano must resign immediately. She is not fit for the job.
Posted by: slayer | December 28, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
Where did this bomber originate? It is inconceivable that anyone could be blaming the government for a failed security breach that is to be blamed on the “mess-up” of the security system of a foreign country. This person was allowed on a plane which flight originated in Nigeria. It also came through Amsterdam, in the Netherlands with this guy undetected. How are officials here in this country are being blamed for a failure of the Dutch and Nigerian security people.
Who are you guys blaming? You never blamed Bush for 9/11, you did not blame him for starting a bogus war in Iraq, you have not blamed him for a failed and wrecked economy. You have put ala the blame of Bush’s incompetence on President Obama’s Administration. You guys must quit playing politics. You Repubs begin to sound like a set of whining and hungry coyotes.
Stop playing politics and be objective. This fruitless hounding of this administration will get you nowhere.

How can we trust a woman who appears on TV with that outfit and haircut in the first place? Seriously, though, the only thing that kept that bomb from blowing our jet out of the air was a faulty detonator- and security screening is working like clockwork? Maybe like a broken sun dial, but clockwork? No. She doesn’t know what she’s doing, much less what she’s talking about. And yes, it is our security that failed. That plane was destined for the US. There are checks that should have stopped him that did not. Our “No Fly” list did not work. “Wait a minute,” you say, “he wasn’t even on the list.” Exactly. Why have a “No Fly” list, if we do not put suspected terrorists on it? Oh, that’s right, we’re more concerned with being PC- better to get blown up than to offend any terrorists.
Posted by: Tomatolamb | December 28, 2009, 6:19 am 6:19 am
Both Gibbs and Natpolitano are concerned only with processes here. They don’t care about the end result: American safety and security. Napolitano is talking about “products” going out… she’s only concerned about how information is transferred from law agency to law agency. Why? Because the govt. caught a lot of flack over not sharing information prior to 9/11. She’s not smart enough to understand that the watch lists are useless as they stand now, for preventing another terror attack, because the Enemy is not using known offenders- duh! They are very aware of how our watch lists work, and will not use someone who appears on the “No Fly” list! And did you notice how Gibbs says that these procedures are “years old.” I have never seen an administration shirk responsibility as much as this one does. They’ll be blaming Bush for everything that goes wrong, all through this one term. you have to lead as President, and that includes taking ownership for everything under your watch, good or bad.

The President’s B plus has suddenly changed to a C minus! Napolitano needs to go. Be replaced by someone who can handle the job. The government’s neglect of its responsibilities is hard to phatom. Change that no-fly list! Hire people who really have a brain and will earnestly work on behalf of the American people.

Janet Napolitano admitted that the system failed.
In my local newspaper, Napolitano made comments in the paper’s week of sensationalism about Human Trafficking. She said a big new Human Trafficking intiative is being developed and coming next year. Appearently, again, they were busy fussing over prostitutes instead of dealing with public safety.
Here is a perfect example of how the federal govt’s lousy priorities failed AGAIN. It was only a faulty detonator that saved 100s of poeple from death….it sure was not the State Dept that save them.

Yes, Obamamites, let’s take this opportunity to reflect, ponder, deliberate, deliberate some more, and then play golf on a swanky, uber-expensive beach in Hawaii, as this once great nation goes to Hell in a hand basket. Incompetence reigns at DHS, and now, in defiance of logic, history, and any tether to reality apart from blind ideology, we move apace to have the government usurp 17% of our GDP to run our health system. The uninformed electorate is clearly the biggest threat to liberty, freedom and prosperity.

I wonder why so many politicians open their mouths before their brains are even working! You’d have thought that they have learned not to do so, yet time and again, they say the first “positive” thing before even getting the full facts, let alone ponder and think over the whole issue. Time to use duck tape on all of them.

Tell it like it is and quit trying to downplay the incident and be politically correct. And why did it take our bowing president nearly three days to address the country? This administration is a joke!

It’s the same old story, government not doing their job. and They expect the passangers and flight attendants to do their dirty work while they sit back and let people like this to slip thru the cracks. It’s certainly not like the movies where government institutions are crack on the case. Far from it. Sept 11th should have taught us all that.

Why do incidents like these always deteriorate in to partisan finger pointing? Yes, Obama is the president and anything that happens on his watch is his responsibility but just how is it constructive to blame the president? The same thing could have happened on Bush, McCain or Palins watch and it would be their responsibility but not necessarily their fault. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter whose fault it is, only that we address the problem and correct it. I do have to say that Ms. Napolitano’s remarks are absolutely asinine but we all know that is just spin on a systemic failure.

How reassuring to hear everything went smoothly after the fact! This from an idiot that can’t bring herself to call terrorists what they are.
There are 176 (or so)very lucky people that survived despite this incompetent administration because of plain luck.
Why is the media interviewing these knuckleheads instead of the hero that jumped and subdued this attempted bomber. Next we’ll here Napolitano or Holder preparing to prosecute the “HERO” for denying this terrorist his rights.

I see a lot of posts blaming Napolitano (that may be warranted, I also agree that she is not qualified). But do you really think for one minute that any statement she made on this subject was not run past the President, Rham Emanuel, David Axelrod and other top administrators (and approved) before she went on national TV? This administration is one of the best at controlling the message. They will tell their Cabinet members what to go out and tell the public (you don’t wing it in this administration). Just listen to them, the phraseology may be different, but the “talking points” are always the same (even Gibbs said basically the same thing Napolitano said initially). However, if the message does not come across as they thought it would, they will throw you under the bus in a heart beat. Look at Obama’s grandmother (typical white person), his own pastor of 20 years (Rev. Wright) and I could name 50 others. In Chicago politics, it’s not the politician that has the power; it’s the handlers and the power brokers that call all the shots. Due to Obamas oratorical skills, all they have to do is put it on the teleprompter and people swoon. If you really think that Obama is the one in charge, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you.

Robert,
Quit defending the Obama administration!!!
While, you’re right that this could have happened under Bush, Bush administration did not change the term “terrorist” to “man-made disaster”. Bush administration did not close Gitmo and push to put those terrorist who were on battlefield and not following the Geneva Convention under civilian trial. Bush administration would not have so quickly deny that the Fort Hood shooting and this to be “isolated extremist” when it is clear they were in conversing with terrorists.
Being soft on terror and “hoping” they go away doesn’t work!!!

Mary Steele, while I agree with you about our southern border. I have to cut Janet a little slack. The last DHS appropriation bill allocated $0 and striped funding for the border fence. This was done mainly at the requests of environmental groups. However Chris Dodd got $300,000 to repair a pier that doesn’t even have a boat docked there (what this has to do with homeland security I haven’t an idea). But I really doubt that Napolitano put up much of a fight for funding. I guess this is “change” we can believe it.
