Obama: Climate Change Agreement Not Perfect, But a ‘Substantial Step Forward’
ABC News' Jim Sciutto, Bill Blakemore and Karen Travers report:
COPENHAGEN — Acknowledging that the climate change agreement world leaders are considering here in Copenhagen is not perfect, President Obama said that action must be taken now and modifications to the agreement can be made down the road.
“This is not a perfect agreement, and no country would get everything that it wants,” the president said at a plenary session at the United Nations summit. “But here is the bottom line: we can embrace this accord, take a substantial step forward, and continue to refine it and build upon its foundation.”
Obama outlined three key elements that must be in the final agreement:
• All major economies must commit to reducing their emissions.
• There must be a transparent review to ensure nations are keeping their commitments to reduce emissions
• There needs to be financing to help developing nations adapt to these new standards
“It is a clear formula – one that embraces the principle of common but differentiated responses and respective capabilities,” Obama said. “And it adds up to a significant accord – one that takes us farther than we have ever gone before as an international community.”
The president began his day with a multilateral meeting with over a dozen key leaders in an effort to hammer out an agreement after days of stalled negotiations.
“While the reality of climate change is not in doubt, our ability to take collective action hangs in the balance,” he said.
Obama said he came here to Copenhagen “not to talk, but to act,” but said that the United States will “continue on this course of action no matter what happens in Copenhagen.”
The president noted that progress on energy efficiency is not just necessary for the environment, but also for the economic future and security of the United States.
“We are convinced that changing the way that we produce and use energy is essential to America’s economic future – that it will create millions of new jobs, power new industry, keep us competitive, and spark new innovation,” he said. “And we are convinced that changing the way we use energy is essential to America’s national security, because it will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and help us deal with some of the dangers posed by climate change.”
Obama’s schedule in Copenhagen is fluid and he has already skipped a planned meeting with Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen. He is scheduled to sit down with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabo, Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev before leaving for Washington.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Anyone who says: “the science is settled” doesn’t know what they are talking about; but anyone who says that knowing that those who have been doing the “science” have been caught sexing up the data, distorting the review process and preventing proper outside checking of the data is a liar.
I like Obama and for his sake (and healthcare in the US) I hope he gets away with this, but as for the science it is complete tripe and those involved should have a proper peer review: by a jury in a court!

I’m sorry, Mr. President, but I don’t trust you or any of the other participants on this one.
The data is suspect, and the real motives and intentions of those who want this are suspect as well.

To Mike Haseler,
I hate to break this to you but based on your statement the programmer who worked with the databases and code must ALSO be a liar.
For in his programmer’s log he admits to ‘sexing’ up the data. He also admits that he has data for a weather station in Australia that didn’t exist.
But don’t take my word for it. Look up the Harry Read Me file for yourself.
I don’t consider you a liar by the way, I just think you and many others are stuck in a ‘groupthink’ mentality.

This administration is becoming known as ‘The Presidency of Imperfection’. As a result garbage is being shoved down the American peoples throats. Where is his veto for pork and political favors? The health care bill is not a health care bill, it’s a political posturing and greed bill.

“While the reality of climate change is not in doubt, our ability to take collective action hangs in the balance,” he said.
A perfect example of taking a phrase, repeating it as often as you can so that those who have nothing better to do can have something to worry about and get behind this misleading movement. And as President, changing regulations can insure that the men who helped you to office can and will get terribly wealthy from all these “changes”.
When a corrupt, dictator bad mouths our way of life, capitalism, and gets the biggest applause of anyone there then you know that this is a movement that is not to our benefit.
This movement is far worse than any street preacher predicting doom and the end of time or people convinced space craft are nearby coming to rescue them…after they, the believers, kill themselves.

For 3 millions of years the Rockies stood tall. But in less than 30 years The Rockies are loosing their peaks at a faster rate.
For millions of years the Ice berge, Ice glaciers have stood with no change. But in 30 years+ the glaciers have been breaking off and melting.
Living in desert with change in climate last year, having snow in December, January, February, and March, Yet you believe there is no change in our climate.
Our water supply has been in droubt for 30 years. Our water supply in resevoirs, rivers, lakes and streams have dropped each year for 30 years. Yet you believe there is no change in our climate.
Maybe when you have a blizzard on the 4th of July you will finally admit that man has destroyed this planet.

I know American is getting tired of Obama’s lectures. And judging by the audience in Copenhagen they are tired of it too.
Is that lame “Hope and Change” working anywhere anymore?
Probably on Wall Street and with Obama’s special interest groups.
They are thriving.

Oh, Angie, I still love you, baby…
But, you are so wrong about so many things. What caused the Grand Canyon, no change? What about Vikings farming in Greenland. No change.
Darlin’ you must be very young to think that the earth must stay the same over millions of years unless we did something “bad” to change it.
We are supposed to be here. We are supposed to make our lives more beautiful, better, easier over time. It’s okay. The earth is going to be okay. I cannot believe public school teachers are allowed to scare the young people this way.
To help you sleep a little better, do you know there are MORE polar bears, not less? Those cute, fuzzy, vicious, seal eating, omnivores’ numbers are increasing.

Yeah, look at how he talked those Somali pirates into giving up their hostage. Or just talked about increasing the troops to go after the Taliban by a factor of four. Or just talked about getting a stimulus through to reduce the severity of the Bush tax-cuts recession. Or just talked about decreasing lobbyists in government (but since he merely has the fewest lobbyists in decades he’s failed, right?). Or just talked about increasing science funding.
Yeah, this guy is just talk – so I assume the Right wing will quit the hysterical ranting that he’s the second coming of Marx single handedly tearing down the country in less than 11 months.

“Maybe when you have a blizzard on the 4th of July you will finally admit that man has destroyed this planet.”
I thought the greenhouse gas emissions–especially that nasty CO2–were supposed to be making us warmer? You know this decade being the “warmest” on record (since 1850)!
Finally, what about the cyclical weather changes on the other planets? Is man causing them as well?

If you don’t understand how the increase in average global temperatures can increase cold extreme weather events too (primarily by disrupting warming currents and airstreams), then you do not have even a basic knowledge of the science.
Seattle is further North than Ottowa, the capital of Canada, yet it is far warmer. Does that mean the fact that Northern latitudes are colder than the equator is just a scam?
Posted by: jhw539 | December 18, 2009, 9:50 am 9:50 am
I’m sorry that people you trusted lied to you Angie and jhw. I can even understand the good hearted intentions behind wanting to “save the planet.” It’s probably the same feeling a lot of AGWers had at the beginning. A feeling of control, like they good do something good. In fact, many probably still think that way. Unfortunately for them they were hoodwinked.
I don’t even blame the scientists who first posited the theory. Science is about theories and proving them accurate or debunking them. What it’s not about is altering data or computer models to fit your theory and make it believable. That’s politics, or more aptly, the religion of politics.
Religion mockers like jhw need to look in the mirror and see how staunchly they defend their new religion. Maybe you can use it to find some empathy for others who don’t think like you do.
Ice ages are nothing new, neither are the warming periods after them. Man is the newer addition to the equation. Not in the sense that he’s causing the change, because the change existed prior; but in the sense that he’s arrogant enough to think he caused the change and therefore arrogant enough to think he can fix it.

Oddly, the Chinese Premier and the Russian President didn’t seem to think it a waste and are also in attendance. Yeah, it would have been great for the US to leave those two to be seen as world leaders while ours stayed home. And the only people who have proclaimed him Savior of the World are the delusional Right.

“…then you do not have even a basic knowledge of the science.”
And I was always under the impression that when temperatures increased that it got warmer! Thanks for setting me straight!
So if the greenhouse gas emissions can also cause extreme cold temperatures, then how do we know whether the ice caps will completely melt or refreeze and spread towards the equator? Then how can we be certain that the sea level will rise 20 feet in the next 40 years?

1)Deflection (with a sympathy card bonus)
2) Ad hominem attack
3) Self-righteous elitism.
That pretty much covers it. Oh, except for the fact that you didn’t acknowledge that all this has existed for millions of years prior to man.
Thanks for playing, though. ;)

(AP) If they fail to reach a climate deal in Copenhagen, world leaders flying in their private jets and huddling in five-star hotels will have little to show for their efforts beyond a big, fat carbon footprint.
The U.N. estimates 40,500 tons of carbon dioxide will be pumped into the atmosphere during the 12-day conference – 90 percent of it from flights. The rest comes from waste and electricity related to transport to and from the conference center and lodging in and around the Danish city.
In other words these self adsorbed knuckle heads want you and I to turn back the thermostats while they “save the world”.
Typical lear jet liberals.

“If you don’t understand how the increase in average global temperatures can increase cold extreme weather events too (primarily by disrupting warming currents and airstreams), then you do not have even a basic knowledge of the science.”
In other words, global warming causes:
- Warmer temperatures
- Colder temperatures
- Average temperatures
So how do you know when you’ve solved “the problem”?
Also, what is the “right” temperature for the entire planet and where do you measure it?
It’s really sad how many seemingly smart people have been brainwashed by this scam, which is nothing more than a plan for massive wealth redistribution governed by a small group of elites.
Wake up, sheep!

Yep! The sheep need to wake up!

Obama and Cliton say at the meeting in Copenhagen that American is ready to spend US$10,000,000,000 for climate change. According to US Constitution,
the president of USA should be allowed by 60% of states senate before he signs
on the international agreement.
I want to ask Obama where the HUGE money comes from ?
US$1,200,000,000,000.00–BUDGET IN 2010
US$30,000,000,000..00-AFGANISTIAN WAR IN 2010
US$900,000,000,000.00-OBAMA CARE REFORM
US$10,000,000,000.00-FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
US$1,000,000,000.00-HELPING OF ABORTION IN MOSTLY AFRICA COUNTRIES.
Obama and Nancy Pelosi have prepared to reform of immigration and 2nd stimulus package.
Let’s see it. America had printed US$1,000,000,000,000.00 on March, 2009.
Mr. President and Nancy! How much you will print and borrow the money from China in 2010 ?

“Premiums will go up, employers are going to load up more costs on you. Potentially employers are going to drop your coverage because they just can’t afford massive increase of 25 to 30% in terms of the cost to provide your health care.”
“The federal government will go bankrupt because Medicare and Medicaid are on a trajectory that is unsustainable and this bill actually provides us the best chance to bend the curve on government expenditures of Medicare and Medicaid”.
“If you don’t do this, nobody argues with the fact that cost of Medicare is going to consume the entire federal government.”

Nicely articulated thoughts in a semi-hostile arena. Sadly, geo-politics trumped geo-science, but I think only the naive believed that wouldn’t be the case, given the worldwide economy, and the status of meaningful climate change legislation here at home. I’m still glad the President made the trip.
