Obama’s High Stakes Copenhagen Gamble

ABC News' Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report: President Obama will fly overnight to Copenhagen, Denmark this evening, for the tail-end of the climate change conference — uncertain of what kind of impact, if any, his presence at the 193-nation conference will have.

The original goal of the Climate Change Conference was a legally binding international treaty for reducing greenhouses gas emissions worldwide. That goal has since been scaled back – and the nations are now working on just being able to get a more informal agreement.

But, if the last 10 days of the climate change summit is any indication, that toned-down goal may not be reached either.

There are three major snags right now being debated on: whether China will agree to allot international certification of their pledged to reduce carbon emissions, whether wealthier nations will uphold earlier agreements to help developing nations thrive while abiding by new environmental rules, and whether developing nations such as Sudan, Venezuela and Bolivia — whose Socialist president today blamed climate change on capitalism — will agree to any reduction in carbon emissions at all.

As the debate continued in Copenhagen today, some described the stakes in almost apocalyptic terms.

"Without common action, extreme temperatures will create a new generation of poor, with climate change refugees driven from their homes by drought, climate change evacuees fleeing the threat of drowning,"British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou set up the high-stakes in similar terms.

"We face the nightmare of humanity becoming the species that dies out just as a parasite does as it devours its host,"Papandreou said.

Earlier today America's top diplomat, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, swept into Copenhagen to try to resolve some of the tensions with the developing world by offering to help raise $100 billion for the developing world to address their climate change needs.

But there were strings attached.

The money would only be on the table "in the context of a strong accord, in which all major economies stand behind meaningful mitigation actions and provide full transparency as to their implementation,"Clinton said.

China has most notable been balking at firm commitments to reduce the carbon emissions, since the G-8 meeting in Italy over the summer, making the chances for a binding agreement in Copenhagen highly unlikely.

On the eve of the President's arrival, even senior administration officials downplayed their expectations of the chances of the Mr. Obama flying back to the U.S. late Friday with anything tangible.

"I think we're making progress in that regard but there's still a way to go on all the issues, but there's not much time left. So we certainly can't predict at this point what the outcome of the conference will be,"a senior administration official told reporters setting up the presidents' trip today.

With much work left undone and very few hours until the conclusion of the summit on Friday evening, Mr. Obama's prestige may be put on the line be even attending the conference.

"It plays into one of the bad narratives which is the fact that this is someone who does not have the juice overseas,"Jonathan Martin, of Politico says.

The last time the President flew to Copenhagen he came back empty handed, while trying to secure the 2012 summer Olympics for Chicago.

Yet this time, Mr. Obama has higher stakes with the threat of international failure.

140 private jets, 15,000 delegates,10,000 environmental activist, a hundred world leaders and 5,000 journalist and the eqivalent of 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Not too bad for a bunch of earth savers and no doubt a bunch of poetry for Al Gore to copy from bathroom stalls.
I say I’ll throw another log on the fire, grab a cold one and wait for the snow to hit tomorrow in the mid south.

Lets see, so that’s (15,000+10,000+5,000+100)/140 jets =>
215 people per private jet? That’s not bad, it’s better than commercial actually.

“Temperatures will stay low at least the next three days,” Henning Gisseloe, an official at Denmark’s Meteorological Institute, said today by telephone, forecasting more snow in coming days. “There’s a good chance of a white Christmas.”
Delegates from 193 countries have been in Copenhagen since Dec. 7 to discuss how to fund global greenhouse gas emission cuts. U.S. President Barack Obama will arrive before the summit is scheduled to end tomorrow.
Denmark has a maritime climate and milder winters than its Scandinavian neighbors. It hasn’t had a white Christmas for 14 years, under the DMI’s definition, and only had seven last century. Temperatures today fell as low as minus 4 Celsius (25 Fahrenheit).

I mentioned in another article that Obama appears to be once again going to somewhere where he may come back empty handed.
We saw this with his trip to Asia and his last trip to Copenhagen. Both were rather disappointing.
A President doesn’t generally put his prestige on the line like this time and again and come back home so empty handed.
Maybe the ‘fix is in’ this time and the President already has something he can offer to turn Copenhagen around. Maybe…
If not he comes home empty handed. The President of Hope and Change has nothing to show for us electing him.

Jake Tapper has got it all wrong. We are not discussing “Obama’s” high stakes. We are talking about ours. We are talking about the planet’s future.
Because, for real, it’s not nice to pimp slap Mother Nature. And right now Mother Nature is turning into real female dog – and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
Besides, I have vested interests. I am a nickel and dime investor looking for promising green technology stock. Several of the companies I’ve invested in have already given me a nice return – and I want “mo’money.” I might add that my pension CalSTRS also invests in green technology – so the prospect of not having to spend my old age in a homeless shelter is more than appealing.
Beyond me, green technology is a “win-win” for everyone on the planet. The Chinese are already making advances in this country – several solar and wind companies have already established a foothood here. Why shouldn’t they want more? Green technology is an emerging multi-trillion market. The investments we make now in the smartgrid, for example, will pay for themselves 4 times over. Green technology means jobs, jobs, and jobs. That’s the reason the USW put a big banner on its headquarters saying “Good jobs . Green jobs.”
If we fail to act, it’s not Obama who will lose – all of us will lose. Why would any one oppose a win-win proposition – especially Wall Street?
I am glad I voted for Obama, and wish him God-speed at Copenhagen. We all need it.
P.S. To any one who wants to make a snide remark, I’ll just say do your homework. Before you post a blog, read Al Gore’s latest book Our Choice.

Is this the new lie Republicans are trying to make true through mindless repetition? Bush Sr’s biggest achievement in his visits to Japan to deal with the trade imbalance in the 80′s was throwing up during a state dinner. And by your absurd scale, Reagan’s speech to the British Parliament was a failure since he did not get anything for it (indeed, was derided as an “ignorant cowboy”):
“The march of freedom and democracy will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash heap of history, as it has left other tyrannies which stifled the freedom and muzzled the self-expression of the people.” -1982
I’m not expecting anything from Obama’s trip over there other than the standard diplomacy that is another small step to rebuilding the soft power that peaked with Bush Sr and cratered to nothing with Bush Jr. And no one who pays attention expects anything to get done on emissions control ever since they took moves that effectively banned the of reconciliation to pass the emissions bill (they kept the option open for the health care bill).

“We are talking about the planet’s future.”
Actually that is not true! Even if everything that the global warming activists say is true and comes to fruition, Earth will survive. It’s the Earth’s inhabitants that will suffer. Don’t confuse the two! Even if we detonated every weapon of mass destruction (biological, chemical and nuclear) Earth will survive. There may be no humans, mammals, fish (maybe, maybe not) or fowl, but there will still be plenty of plant life.
“Besides, I have vested interests.”
THAT is the crux of the whole scam! There are a lot of people who have a vested interested in global warming–including some scientists and researchers, who receive government grants as long as they continue to promote global warming.
Now then, don’t get me wrong. I have no problem with alternative energy. I DO have a problem with government mandating lifestyles.

Luckily, many of the same folks who helped poor ‘ol cigarette companies are now working hard to defend the oil, coal and gas companies. They don’t seem to have any money to actually collect data or provide any refuting evidence- you know, science – but they’re doing their best to make noise.

It is highly likely that China will balk at signing international agreement which will allow monitoring by other nations of her progress on environment cleanup. If so, Obama may come back from Copenhagen empty handed, the second time since his last visit to Copenhagen, trying to win Olympic game site for Chicago only a couple months ago.

Every good scientist is skeptical. And all the research being done now is to test the current theories of climate change, find errors with them and improve them. Hence the labling of the politically motivators deniers – they are NOT collecting any data, analyzing it and providing an alternative hypothesis with factual support. They are just petualantly refusing the results. Sometimes they grab data from real scientists to look for typos, but I have yet to hear of Exxon taking a single ice core or the Shenhua Group doing a comparision of samples taken from peat bogs to collect real, factual support.

The believers are being assailed from every angle. They debate whether warming is happening, whether it’s influenced by human activity or not, whether there is anything we can do about it or afford to, or even whether we should. I think we should be evaluating the risks of action or inaction instead of perpetually demanding proof either way when it will never be practical.

Not quite true. No one is attacking them with hypotheses supported by actual research and data (ie, science). If they did and successfully brought forth data to support no CO2 impact on climate, then they would win the Nobel faster than the guy who was pushed to the fringes for saying ulcers could be caused by bacteria – who then actually *proved it* and became a star overnight. There are huge rewards in the scientific community for overturning the accepted dogma.

As for fear-mongering I think the Prime Minister was being conservative. There is definitely risk associated with climate change. The reserve food supply on Earth is measured in months or even weeks. [feel free to check the latest estimates] That’s how long till the food starts running out if supplies were to be interrupted. When living on such a fine line messing with climate could be a really bad idea.

Until the global warming disciples can explain how it was not warmer in 1000AD when a. vinifera grapes grew in England, b.labrusca grapes grew in Newfoundland and c. animal husbandry was going on in Greenland the entire theory is not sustainable. If the tree ring data does not account for these historic FACTS it cannot be considered a reliable measure of contemporary temperature. However, Dr. Mann’s Hockey Stick graph is largely based on tree ring data from the Yamal peninsula in Siberia. The fact that Mann ignored data from the same series that showed that the tree line was much further north during the same period is absolutely shocking.

Ocean currents. [Gulf Stream] There was nothing going on inland on Greenland. It’s covered 10,000ft deep by the world’ second largest ice-cap since way before recorded history. It seems to be melting rapidly now however. Britain is at the same latitude as Labrador but is much warmer because of the Gulf Stream. Some climate change models predict that as temperatures rise the course of the Gulf Stream could be shifted and temperatures in Britain could drop significantly. So yes, it could have been warmer on the coast of Greenland and in England while being colder most everywhere else.

“Why do you assume that a warmer planet would be bad for the food supply?”
A warmer planet by itself may not necessarily be a bad thing. We know that the tropics extended all the way to the poles at times in the distant past. It’s the rate of change that could be dangerous. Certainly volcanoes, El Ninos and dustbowls have struck in recorded history and civilization managed along, but these effects were somewhat localized. If we shock our agricultural systems and the effects are truly global so there is nobody unaffected to fall back on because agriculture is under stress everywhere, we could be in serious trouble. Some of these scientists are calling for a 5 degree or more increase within our lifetimes, not the 1000yrs since they allegedly had cows in Greenland. It may well be worth playing it safe and cutting back emissions until we have a better idea of what’s going to happen. Conserving energy is rarely a bad thing anyway.

Do you know that cocaine is not addicting and children learn their gender behaviors through their socialization?
I know this is true because those were the “facts” I learned in my college classes in the early 80′s.
I learned of course, through my own observation, that both these theories were bogus when two of my friends entered rehab for cocaine addiction and my son enjoyed making guns out of his peanut butter sandwich (I wouldn’t allow toy weapons in the house.)
He wasn’t too fond of the baby doll I gave him either. :)
Science is theory. There is way too much politics involved in this one. We need more investigation and study.

Marge Simpson: We wouldn’t be in this trouble if you’d just pay the heating bill.
Homer Simpson: I thought Global Warming would take care of it. Al Gore can’t do anything right!

“This is not fiction, this is science. Unchecked, climate change will pose unacceptable risks to our security, our economies, and our planet.”
