Obama’s War

President Obama is preparing to deliver what might end up being the most important foreign policy address of his career. Tonight Afghanistan will officially become his war. And he will have to sell it to a war-weary public.

Last night around 10 pm, the president held an hour-long video conference call with Afghan President Karzai. Karzai’s office says the two leaders discussed in detail the security, political, military and economic aspects of the administration’s strategy.

I will be listening to words like “victory” and “win” and “enemy.” I won’t be holding my breath.

Under President Bush the world hated us, Under President Obama the world laughs at us, I’d rather be hated !!!

Some might say that Afghanistan, like Iraq, became his war on January 20, 2009 — just as World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam became Truman, Eisenhower, and Nixon’s wars upon their inauguration. A new president doesn’t get to pick and choose…

Jake,
If this is a plan, as I suspect, cobbled together by various parties(remfer’s) here in the US with little or no oversight, control and direct input by the planners/commanders in the field; pay close attention to the variables surrounding ‘exit’ details as we’ll likely be using them sooner -and at great cost- as opposed to later.

A couple of questions… Canada’s CBC is pointing out that the president himself is not briefing the Canadian PM, as he is a list of other nations, some of whom have NO troops there, but delegating that task to the V.P. It is being perceived as an insult to Canada, which has lost more troops per capita than any other nation in Afghanistan. Why is he doing that?
Second, are there historical precedents for a president to make such an announcement in a speech at West Point? I can imagine why he wouldn’t want to venture into Congress, but why not the Oval Office?

For all his opinions and self-proclaimed insight those two years prior to his election last year, it’s heartening to now see him step up, eleven months after assuming the office of Commander in Chief, and finally lay out a strategy and a plan to lead US to a positive conclusion in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Tonight he will finally have to take ownership for this.
“Hello, my name is Barack, and I have a war I’m responsible for”

Let’s all hope Obama remembers what HE said about Afghanistan and al-Qaeda way, way back in March 2009:
“So I want the American people to understand that we have a clear and focused goal: to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to prevent their return to either country in the future. That’s the goal that must be achieved. That is a cause that could not be more just. And to the terrorists who oppose us, my message is the same: We will defeat you.”

It will be interesting to see how the speech is written. How many times will Barack himself be interjected into the speech?
Tonight will be another chance to play Obama Speech Bingo.
Watch for words and phrases such as “unprecedented”, “stark realities”, “bold action”, “The time to act is now”, “This plan will spend less money”, “As I have said many times before…”, “It’s unsustainable for Americans…” and of course, “I inherited…” and the ever so fuzzy and funny “Let me be clear”.

“Off ramps” will be the middle “free” square.

Poor Obama, somebody please save him from the evil neo-cons!
Pardon me while I vomit.
If “the US is bankrupt,” then we clearly cannot afford the $787 Billion stimulus payoff to Democrat cronies, the $2 TRILLION ObamaCare takeover, and the industry-crushing trillion dollar Cap & Tax. To use one of their favorite buzzwords, Obama’s spending orgy is already “unprecedented.”

BRAVO: Did Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt know ‘crashers’ were with him at $tate Dinner? Did Immelt inform President Obama?
Big boost to BRAVO franchise…
CRASHERS GIVE ‘TODAY SHOW’ INTERVIEW; UNDER CONTRACT WITH TV COMPANY….

another HOAX by Obama and the media to divert attention from the Global warming HOAX

because neither Iraq nor Afghanistan will ever be normal functioning societies in our lifetimes
Posted by: Helene | Dec 1, 2009 10:13:47 AM
What does Sullivan consider a “normal” functioning society? Iraq might not end up with malls, Starbucks and Britney Spears but they can certainly end up with a society they consider as highly functional – and rich with culture. Sullivan is arrogant in assuming he knows what’s normal.
Afghanistan is a deeper struggle but again Sullivan should not be judging them as “abnormal.”
Actually some would question whether or not Sullivan is “normal.”

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -13
I think these numbers would go up if Obama would just get us out of AfPak.
But not much…

So he’s going to put West Point through a round of Bush bashing, then talk about himself, then give a shout out to the troops?
Could not this have been done at the WH?
Say, with the press corps?
I wish he would just bring all the troops home. This is going from bad to worse. None of the agitator lawyers have read any history in this administration, and it shows.

George Bush and Cheney dithered on Afghanistan for 7 long years – they deserve every bit of criticism they get. And most of the criticism does not come from the White House – it comes from regular people who can see through the hypocrisy of the Bush administration, and the wingnut right.

Well, these ‘ordinary’ people are now backed up by the recent Senate report – and 7 years of obvious dithering by Bush and Cheney on Afghanistan (followed by Cheney’ hypocritical attacks on Obama).
The ineptness and the sleaziness is apparent.
