Palin Indulges Birthers
While you were paying attention to Afghanistan policy, the health care debate, and the economy, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has indulged her inner birther, deeming legitimate questions as to whether President Obama was born in the U.S., a matter settled long ago.
He was born in Hawaii in 1961 as records and newspaper announcements from the time indicate. Nonetheless, an angry fact-challenged fringe continues to act as if this is a matter of national import. A fringe that Palin perhaps doesn’t want to alienate.
Rick Klein covered this in this morning's Note, and Ben Smith at Politico was way on top of it, but to recap:
In an interview Tuesday with conservative talk radio host Rusty Humphries, she was asked "would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran" for president?
"Um…I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue," Palin said. "I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue because I think there are enough members of the electorate that want answers."
"Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?" Humphries asked.
"I think it’s a fair question just like I think past associations and past voting records, all of that is fair game," Palin said. "You know, I’ve got to tell you too, I think our campaign, McCain-Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were, and perhaps what their future plans were, and I don’t think that was fair to voters to not have done our jobs as candidates and a campaign to bring to light a lot of things that now we’re seeing made manifest in the administration.
"I mean, truly if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama’s past should be," Humphries said. "I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?"
"Hey, you know, that’s a great point," she said. "And that weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son, and a lot of people that “Well, you need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he’s your kid,” which we have done, but yeah, so maybe we can reverse that, and use the same (inaudible) type of thinking on the other one."
Palin last night on her Facebook page tried to clarify her comments under a post titled "Stupid Conspiracies."
"Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose," she said. "I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States."
Which of course is not an assertion that the president was born in the USA, as the Boss sang.

This is almost as stupid as the news media is in covering up ClimateGate. Now who believes Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric and Brian Williams have met and told each other not to cover ClimateGate? Call your congressmen and urge an investigation into the Media Coverup.

I don’t really understand this argument. I have a birth certificate, you have a birth certificate. The president must be enjoying this “controversy” or he would produce the document just like you or I would. It’s just a silly distraction from real issues.

Well, seems like she’s saying why shouldn’t it all be fair game.
In addition, as for silly Conspiracy Theories, what about Global Warming? Kinda crazy now eh?

You can find people who believe all kinds of nonsense.
A certain percentage of people still believe Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11. A certain percentage of people believe Obama was born on the planet Zoron.
A certain number of people believe global warming isn’t real, but that doesn’t really matter.
What matters is that the best of our scientists give us the best of their research.

So ABC News sees fit to (again) report on a fluff piece while it blatantly ignores investigation and reporting of ClimateGate (which of course, would reflect poorly on the goals and objectives of Obama).
My wife used to watch “ABC News with Charlie Gibson” (I stopped watching MSM deliverd content years ago). No more. Not with the blatant biased reporting practiced by a so-called “news” organization.
ABC News is slow to realize that the time when they could sweep topics and issues under the rug to protect favored constituencies is long gone. They will continue to bleed viewers (or fight it out with NBC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC for liberal viewers and the remaining uninformed)until they make a change in their philosophy towards how they investigate, edit, and report news.

Jake, you need to get your derangement syndrome under control. Or if she is such an obvious nothing politically – just ignore her. Palin doesn’t even hold an office. She’s on a book tour for God’s sake! Why don’t you attack some of the disgusting things Joy Behar says about Bush? You’re supposed to be the Fourth Estate!
Better yet, why don’t you try exposing some of the other political misfits that prowl the streets of America. There’s plenty to choose from.
Why don’t you try to come to terms with your bias about her, read up on the facts about her life and draw some of your own conclusions for a change. Try to find out why she has a following and learn to understand the people who like her. We’re not all right-wing birther extremists.
And don’t listen to the smear merchants! They never practice what they preach!

Many of these comments discuss what the media reports. Guys and gals, a free press is driven by the same market desires as any other form of business: Revenue and net income. For this reason the media delivers whatever they think will make them the most money. There is NO news outlet which is bias-free. The traditional networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) are more middle-of-the-road than most. MSNBC caters to the left. Fox caters to the right. They each have their market niches. The alternative is state-controlled media which would deliver a far-less objective viewpoint. Don’t single-source your news. Get it from several sources, including those with which you normally do not agree.

Im not going to listen to a nutjob like you who has the opinoin that global warming isnt happening or that humans didnt cause it when i can look at scientific data over the last sixty years that proves you wrong in every way. Just keep on doing what they tell you to do. but I actually looked into myself and found out the truth for myself. Do you think its a coincidence that the large levels or carbon dioxide started the exact years we had the industrial revolution. That was sixty years ago and now the levels are off the charts unlike anything the earth has ever seen. Ice is melting thats a fact and there is nothing we can do to stop it except change our ways and start a new green energy industry that will create millions of jobs. but then again if we did that you wouldnt have anything to complain about. I would agree with the exception that the MSM for years has “sniffed” at alternate media such as blogs and alternative news. Wasn’t it Dan Rather that spoke so distainfully of anyone other than himself and other “real” news outlets? Truth be told, they probably thought they were better than their own cable news alternatives until it became obvious that they were successful and then wanted to get in on the action, especially on the ‘net.
The problem I have with this is Jake sits in the WH Press Briefings, reports on the ABC Nightly News but runs a “Political Punch” blog described as “power, pop and probings” (whatever that means). Jake needs to decidee what he wants to be when he grows up. Either get serious or run a “musings” blog. Otherwise, he’s just confusing the issue and we get to take him to task.

I support Palin. I am a college graduate. I have worked both blue collar and white collar jobs since I was 16. I’ve been married once – for 35 years. I’m a homeowner (God help me), an independent contractor, a conservative, a supporter of states rights with minimal Federal intervention. I like prime time tv, movies, music and books of all types, computers, cameras and big screen tvs. I am not insecure, low brow or ignorant.

a.) The Industrial Revolution started in the 1800s
b.) Historically, atmospheric CO2 levels have been much higher and much lower prior to the arrival of humans
Nice try, Champ.

Barrack Obama hung out in bill ayers’ living room MULTIPLE times, thus, “he palled around with terrorists”.
He wrote in his book, dreams from my deadbeat father, “white folks greed runs a world of need”.
He said in a san francisco rally last year that he would “bankrupt the coal industry”, and that “under his administration, energy prices would sky rocket”.
He said in a chicago interview in 2001 that “I think it was a tragedy that the warren courts did not get into wealth redistribution”.
He said in his audacity of hope book, titled after rev racist’s speech, “in college i sought out the marxist professors”.
He told joe the plumber “I just wanna spread it around a bit”.
We have a better chance of hearing about kim jung il’s college days then we do BO’s, but hey, Palin thinks the birth certificate is still a concern so it means she’s crazy!
BO is surrounded by crazy socialists and clouds of lies. I don’t know about his birth certificate and I don’t care. I care that he is a socialist that he HATES capitalism and America itself.

Before the election, I saw a post some where stated that Obama lived in Indonesia before returning to U.S. He attended school there. In order to go to elementary school in Indonesia at that time, one MUST BE A CITIZEN OF INDONESIA. So that is to say, he had to abandon his U.S. CITIZENSHIP in order to attend the Indonesian school there.
But I was not sure it was true though.

I am actually confused about the seemingly hands off approach to Obama’s history. All other recent presidential candidates have had to release college grades and SAT scores and all sorts of personal information. Maybe I missed it, but it doesn’t seem he’s received as much scrutiny as prior candidates.
Did the AP fact check Obama’s biography like they did Palins? For goodness sake there were reporters sifting through Palin’s trash cans looking for info.
It’s the double standard I find so troubling.

You guys are hilarious. If you want to listen to Palin, go right ahead. Thats what America is all about. Yet you do care what the rest of America thinks about you, otherwise you wouldn’t be whining about it all the time. GOP and its followers spend all their time brining people down with negativity and conspiracy theories. Whats Sarahs plan to bring back jobs? To end the war and global terrorism? The only reason she said this was because A) Stock market is back up, about 2500 points below it former high B) Jobs report came back positive. So now all they can harp on is healthcare(which all Congressmen have thru the GOVERNMENT!!!) and the deficeit, which Regean, Bush I and Bush II both helped to build. You guys keep asking why people don’t ask this of Obama, question him on that. We wonder the same about you and Sarah. How can you be Pro Life and for the death penalty? Why do you guys pretend that indivdualism is what makes this country great, that no one should tell you what to do, but then two guys kiss and we have to have a national debate? This is such a ridiculous time, and I’m so glad 50 years from now all you Palin lovers will look like those great people who supported segregation in the 50s. Enough is enough of this nitwit who would set herself on fire for attention. Bring her on: I hope she is the Republican candidate. What people like you don’t understand, is that WE HOPe she is the candidate. However, I doubt if even the Republicans are that stupid. You can live in your delusions if you’d like, but wouldn’t it be better if you learned how to ask questions instead of just swallowing everything your “leaders” tell you? I do. Don’t you think it would be better for you to really investigate things on your own and come up with your own conclusiongs instead of being slavishly devoted to people leading you astray? What do you like about Sarah? Is it her lies. For instance, her continued declaration that she stopped the “bridge to nowhere” even when it was proven that was not true. How about the day when the Alaskan courts found that she was guilty of abuse of power in the Troopergate scandal and she was on TV saying that she was happy that she had been completely exonnerated..huh?? Do you like the fact that she maliciously disseminated misinformation with her talks of “death panels?” (and as a registered nurse, I can tell you that’s a bunch of crap and I am outraged that a public figure can just get away with such incredibly irresponsible behavior.) By that restriction, someone born in the United States, whose parents move to a hostile country when he is three days old, and then he returns at 21 is eligible (when he or she got all her formative education under that hostile goverment), but someone born in another country who is brought here three days later and lives here all their life is ineligible. As for Sarah Palin, she would do well to remember the adage “it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

As soon as we get a majority in Congress, BO will be impeached, then Biden will be President. It is better to have an idiot than a crook as President. By 1012 Sarah will be President in a landside.

She said people have a right to ask about his birth. Of course they do, since the Constituion of the US contains a birth circumstance test for the presidency.
The real scandal is why didn’t the MSM thoroughly explore this topic before he was elected?
To this date we don’t know if he was born at home, or if not, in which hospital he was born. We don’t know how his mother showed up a few weeks later taking university classes in Washington State (probably the real location of his birth).
These are only a few of the thousands of questions that remain unanswered from the most open and transparent president in history.

Sarah Palin’s book has been fact-checked by legitimate organisations – and by the Republican McCain campaign – and found to be riddled with lies and untruths.
Enough said – the woman does not have a grip on reality; thank God she was not elected.
Posted by: tierra | December 4, 2009, 5:44 pm 5:44 pm
Let me get this straight.
Let’s say he wasn’t born in Hawaii. His Mom however, is a natural born US Citizen which makes him a natural born US Citizen no matter where he was physically born. If that wasn’t so, the children of all those military families born overseas would never be able to serve as president, which would be a real shame. You don’t have to be born in the US to be a natural born Citizen as long one of your parent is.
So, he was able to be a US Senator, Be able to get a US Passport. Which one of the requirement to get a US Passport, is to send your actual birth certificate, not a copy, the original to the State Department.
So, all that shows that he is indeed a natural born Citizen. What do you have on the other side? Why would Hawaii in the 1960s forged the Birth Certificate of a mixed racial couple in order to make him a Citizen? What’s your proof?

Aye, Ms. Sarah, the irrepressible wing-nut gift that keeps on giving. Hey, we have to give her some credit. She sold a ton of books, raked in the cash from people wanting a photo with her, Gov. Huck just went down in his own Willie Horton moment, and Pawlenty and Romney seem to get no respect. Palin IS the REPUBLICAN PARTY-unless there is a photo of she and Tiger together somewhere.
Posted by: B. Bear | December 4, 2009, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm
Nothing Obama could do (and he has done everything) would dissuade “birthers” of their determined belief. This is not about “proof” – it is about “truth once revealed” that a black man “must never be” President. “Birthers” are deliberately self-deceived and deluded.
Sarah is doing herself and her God (herself most) a great disservice by even TOLERATING these deluded pathological liars and THEIR “god” the father of lies.
Posted by: Jordan | December 4, 2009, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm
If I remember correctly, Ms. Palin was delayed in producing her own health records and they were then heavily redacted. She complained that the records of her deliveries were not and should not be a part of the public inquiry as to her “fitness” to be a vice president. I think before she starts asking others to produce more and more documentation of things they have already proved, she ought to produce the full record, unredacted and let the people judge whether she is fit to serve.

Lynn: “By 1012 Sarah will be President in a landside.” But, gee, Lynn, by 1066 William the Conqueror will be ruling over us all. And it won’t be pretty!
Posted by: Esther Williams | December 4, 2009, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm
Ms. Palin can say what she wants but the truth of the matter is that the Republicans that really matter in Washington will not campaign along side her if she decides to run for President and no presidential candidate will ever pick her as a running mate for VP. Let her continue to sell her books so and eventually get her version of the Rush Limbaugh Show.

Afraid of Palin? Not in the least. I hope she does run for President in 2012. I’ll even vote Republican in the primaries just so I can vote for her to be the Republican candidate. I bet there will be a long line of Democrats voting for her in the primaries….and laughing the entire time!

Wow, there is something about Sarah Palin and the Birth issue that really gets the left wingnuts in a tither. Sometime I would like to see a dispasionate discussion of the birth certificate issue, exploring the really legitimate questions without all the wild assertions from either side.
Why won’t Mr. Obama release a copy of his orginial long form birth certificate? This will come out sooner or later, why not now?
What exactly is the meaning of “Natural Born Citizen” in a legal sense? How is conveyed?
Where exactly what Mr. Obama born? At home, in a hospital (which one)?
Did Mr. Obama really attend Occidental College on a scholarship for foreign students? Did Mr. Obama travel intenationally in his twenties on an Indoneasion Passport?
Just a few questions that deserve an answer. Heavens knows we when over Mr. Bush’s health records and military service records pretty thoroughly. Why is Mr. Obama special?

Obama has never produced a real birth certificate. When I was a kid and wanted to play baseball I had to show my original birth certificate. You know the kind that has a baby’s foot print, the name of and the signature of the delivery doctor and the hospital etc. All he has to do to make this go away is show his, WHY WONT HE? HE CANT, HE DOESN’T HAVE ONE. That document in Hawaii is a record that anyone who asks for one can get. Anyone can put birth announcements in a newspaper too. WHERE IS THE PROOF?

A child born to a US citizen – anywhere in the world – is a US citizen. His mother was American, so it doesn’t matter where he was born. Just another example of Palin’s stupidity.

joeyjojo: I have no idea where I could possibly find a copy of the certificate the hospital issued to my parents with my footprints. (Its really nothing more than a keepsake). The original of my long form birth certificate is…I don’t know where. I have a copy that my mother gave to me when I left for college. I have two kids: A copy of the short form is sufficient for a baseball team. We know enough about the man and his background to be certain he is, one way or the other, an American citizen.

To Ceeleelee
Why won’t Mr. Obama release a copy of his orginial long form birth certificate? This will come out sooner or later, why not now?
Response: The only thing any state gives out is a copy of your record of birth. The real original stays with the hospital and the state. Are you worried that Mr. Obama wasn’t born?
What exactly is the meaning of “Natural Born Citizen” in a legal sense? How is conveyed?
Response: That you’re trying to get in what the definition of “is” is. A la Bill Clinton. Splitting hairs. The law states if on parent is a US Citizen, the child is natural born.
Where exactly what Mr. Obama born? At home, in a hospital (which one)?
Response: Doesn’t matter if he was born in a barn. What matters is that one of his parents is a US Citizen.
Did Mr. Obama really attend Occidental College on a scholarship for foreign students? Did Mr. Obama travel intenationally in his twenties on an Indoneasion Passport?
Response: That doesn’t have any bearing or any meaning as to his nationality now, does it?
Dual nationality doesn’t negate his natural born status. You don’t loose your citizenship status no matter what other nationality you may or may not have. He would still be a Natural born citizen.
What else do you have?
Posted by: Ed | December 4, 2009, 9:40 pm 9:40 pm
A child born to a US citizen – anywhere in the world – is a US citizen. His mother was American, so it doesn’t matter where he was born.
————–
Maybe so… but it is not adequate to satisfy the Constituional requirement which specifically makes a distinction between a US citizen and a “Natural Born Citizen”.
What is a “Natural Born Citizen”?
Some maintain that it is a child born on US soil of two American Citzens.
If that is true, then Mr. Obama is NOT a Natural Born Citizen and NOT eligible to be the President. In short: A Pretender.
I don’t really know. Do you?

I am not the person who wrote those questions.
However, I agree with the person who did.
obama needs to present all documents mentioned in that post. You, nor any other of his supporters can answer those questions for him.
You know, transparency and all that…
Posted by: ceeLeelee | December 4, 2009, 9:57 pm 9:57 pm
He needs to present those documents to the American people, not just me. We pay his salary.
BTW, did YOU see the documents? Are you his representative in this matter? Do you have the documents? Are they are in your back pocket? If so, lets see them.
You do know obama is paying big bucks to lawyers to keep those records sealed, don’t you?
As I said in my previous post, you can’t answer these questions for obama, no matter how much you support him.
Posted by: ceeLeelee | December 4, 2009, 10:42 pm 10:42 pm
Ed,
Cut the crap.
How about if he just tells the Hawaii public records office to release a copy of his long-form birth certificate to the press? What does he have to hide?
How about if he just tells whatever hospital he was born in to release that fact to the press? What does he have to hide?
How about if he just tells Occidental College to release his college transcripts? What does he have to hide?
How about if he tells Harvard to release his college transcripts? What does he have to hide?
The media and the left wing nut jobs demanded a lot more from Mr. Bush, and he complied. But then, he had nothing to hide.

Before the election, I saw a post some where stated that Obama lived in Indonesia before returning to U.S. He attended school there. In order to go to elementary school in Indonesia at that time, one MUST BE A CITIZEN OF INDONESIA. So that is to say, he had to abandon his U.S. CITIZENSHIP in order to attend the Indonesian school there.

mrgmorgan56 If you’d read her book you would view her very differently. Sarah Palin is anything BUT ignorant or stupid. She is a tough, gutsy, woman who has fought her way up to get where she is now. Many people who’ve got in her way or disagreed with her have paid the price with their employment. Don’t be fooled by the friendliness and the smile. In spite of the fact that she has a problem with giving quick spur of the moment answers, behind that smile is a very intelligent brain. According to her book, many people have found that out the hard way, especially people who have stood up or fought against her in any way. Sarah Palin is no marshmallow. She has no problem firing employees or getting incumbent politicians voted out of office if she thinks they are corrupt. She has done it many times including to some in her own party. In spite of the smile and the friendliness and the down-home country girl personality, this woman is as sharp as a tack and she has steel in her backbone. She will fight like a tiger for what she thinks is right and no one had better get in her way! She is exactly who we need as our next president! Beneath that smile, this woman is a serious politician and she takes no nonsense!

Go home Sarah and RAISE your YOUNG. That’s what admirable real women do. You made your family Rich with your books, you quit as Governor to chase the dollar……and your base is small. You are smart to get your money off of these idiots. Even you know you are “done” as an elected person.

And another thing, Sara, if you think the republican base is small you apparently haven’t been listening to the news lately! People have been waiting in line by the thousands to meet Sarah and get her to sign their books. Also according to Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com her book has already sold over a million copies and is still selling. That is NOT a small base!

Just asking That’s the way she did with all of her pregnancies. She worked right on up until she went in labor with her daughter Piper too! She went in the hospital and had the baby and then was right back at work in her office the next day. One day old Piper slept in a carrier next to her desk. She took no time off at all! She did at least keep the baby with her and didn’t leave her with a babysitter. If you will notice, Trig is usually with her wherever she goes too! He’s not being left at home and raised by a babysitter. I have to hand it to Sarah! The woman has strength that most people don’t have! Most women would have taken at least a month or two off after having a baby to recuperate, but not Sarah! She likes to keep going and keep busy.

The only thing that is bothersome here is that the President doesn’t seem prepared to produce a legitimate birth certificate. I have to be honest, I am tied of this conversation and it continues to cloud the issues. If the President or his staff will simply get the birth records for Barack Obama and publish them on the internet this whole thing will go away and we can go back to getting our eye on the ball.
The President is not some kind of Manchurian candidate or some kind of “plant” to put us in a position to surrender to some foreign power. All that talk is nonsense, superstitious, stupid.
It would just help to get back to the real issues on the direction of this country if the President would simply produce whatever he has and let’s move on.

To the best of my knowledge, no one (Supreme Court in particular) has defined what exactly constitutes one being a “natural born citizen”?
To the Obama supporters, it means some guy here on vacation from France should be able to run for office…if he’s a Liberal of course.
They had no problem in questioning McCain’s ability to run because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone.
