Politicians’ RX For Debt: Take Politicians Out of The Equation
A bipartisan group of Senators is pledging to hold up a needed increase in the US debt limit – past $12 trillion – if Congress does not create a bipartisan commission with sweeping power to enact deficit reduction measures. My colleague, ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf has the story from Capitol Hill:
Senators from both parties made their case at press conference Wednesday featuring Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad and ranking Republican Judd Gregg which featured plenty of scary charts and graphs that showed the US is going belly up because of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. That vote on raising the debt above $12.1 trillion will have to occur late this year or early next year, depending on how creative Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner can get with the accounting. The senators' idea, which still needs buy-in from leaders of both sides of the aisle and the White House, is that debt reduction is too political for politicians to handle and the commission, made up of 10 Democrats (two from the administration) and eight Republicans, would spend next year figuring out a plan to deal with the skyrocketing entitlements, the deficit and the debt. The proposed commission's recommendations would be made after the November election in 2010 (to take the issue out of the campaign), and then be voted on with a 60-vote threshold, by the lame duck Congress before January 2010. "We are on a path to bankruptcy as a nation,"said Sen. Kent Conrad. Conrad said the group has met with President Obama and White House officials to lobby for their proposal, but could not say if they would support it. "We have to join hands and jump off a cliff together,"said Sen. Judd Gregg. And senators agreed that both parties are to blame. "Democrats want to spend more than we can afford, Republicans want to cut more taxes than we can afford,"said Sen. Evan Bayh, a moderate Democrat. "It's got to stop.” "People look at us and say what are you guys doing,"said an exercised Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, at the press conference. He said the bipartisan commission and agreement not to filibuster were essential to passing any tough deficit reduction measures. "We're going to vote up or we're going to vote down. No more delay,"said Voinovich."Our credibility, out credit are in danger,"he added, pointing to the reliance of the government on low-rate loans from foreign countries around the world. It is also notable that neither Voinovich nor Gregg are running for reelection next year. A simple up or down vote on whether to enact the commission's findings would probably be their last act as politicians.

Obama: 'Now Is the Time For Common Sense Action'
Romney Takes Aim at Conservatives
Yep politicians and the complicite Federal Reserve. Your right take the politicians out of it. Leave Ron Paul because he is the only guy to vote with fiscal discipline. Gregg is right we are heading towards disaster. Even if we right the ship now, it will take a decade or more to create a sound economy. After all the bubble has been building since 1971.

There is no question, that this country is ripe for takeover by China, as our largest creditor.
The US government, has to take a lesson from the family play book…..you cannot spend more than you take in.
Fiscal responsibility, begins with that basic concept.

I’m afraid we’re all in for some significant pain in deficit reduction measures. It’s unavoidable and coming soon.

Now, if we could just get politicians out of the government, we might have governance.

If the Private sector was the answer as the GOP so vehemently lies — we wouldn’t have had the Financial meltdown and worthless Credit Default Swaps. Government Regulation is a necessary evil. Having said that , The only answer we have as Americans is to wake up to the fact that we are no longer the Manufacturing engine of the world– China ,India, and others have replaced us. We have become however the Greatest consumer base in the world. This Change is fundamental to prescribe a fix for the deficit dying the economy is doing. I firmly believe this change mandates an economic change on our part– Since we are consumers, not producers,– We must enact a 5-10% import tax on all items manufactured elsewhere. Worrying about a trade war should no longer be our concern as our exports are minimal. An across the board import tax would level the playing field, increase Govt Revenue, and cause exporters to consider moving facilities to the USA. Another move should include taxation of offshored financials, and individuals who make their money in US markets only to circumvent the Tax man. We might even consider getting rid of income tax for a flat tax, considering only about 46% of us currently pay anyway. Someone in this Govt. needs to wake up.The Times they did change and rapidly. Big change, and bigger debt calls for big solutions.

Yeah let’s tax imports just like they did back in 1929 with the infamous Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Didn’t you ever watch Ferris Bueller? That type of protectionism will destroy this country and 100 years from now our great grandchildren will be studying the Fall of the United States and how it all started with crooked politicians and reached a peak with the election of an inexperienced over his head liberal Democrat to the office of the president in 2008 and the carnage that followed.
But keep coming with more brilliant ideas because they are no worse than what Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Charlie Rangel and the rest of the thieves are proposing.

Whats next— I knew someone would bring up that same old Smoot Hawley argument-
Free trade is not free when the Chinese Manipulate their currency– When Canada and a host of other countries subsidize their exports– When OPEC manipulates the amount of gas produced to strangle all Nations. That’s called Price Fixing — Smoot Hawley is irrelevant to a largely consumer nation–. Laying down a % fee to access the Greatest consumer base in the world is just good business– Allowing other nations to sell their products through subsidy and manipulation, as our manufacturing base gets exported, is stupidity– Different Time Different Circumstance — I’d rather a VAT than being one of the 46% who really do pay for everyone else through my income tax. What are you afraid of? Retaliation? Were consumers not exporters– Wake up its a different world!!!Then Go down and pay OPEC’s fixed price at the Pump!!!

It appears that the real problem is government, career politicians have taken over and their first job priority is either getting elected or getting re-elected to office. Their next job priority which is far below the first is to pass legislation the people need. Ask yourself would you spend millions of dollars for a job which pays only slightly more than $200k per year and in the case of a member of the House of Representatives do it every two years? It is time to get rid of the career politician and get folks in office who are there to do the people’s business rather than line their own pockets. All present Congressmen and all running for Congress in the future should be asked to fully support proposed Constitutional amendment COE09E33. This is a simple easy to understand two page bill, Google COE09E33 to read it for yourself. This one simple bill would result in change that we the people could really believe in.

Real Change is needed and I am afraid it is too late for us in the dUnited States to implement it. The import tax suggested above might help in the short term, but the problem, the one that destroyed our so-called free markets, are the Frankenstein’s called Corporations. It’s too late, as it is no longer just our plague, but that of the entire planet. We, the people of the world, cannot have responsible production and consumption, by that I mean that which is both necessary for our well-being AND not harmful to the planet, as long as the producers, the distributors, shippers, marketers and retailers, bear no responsibility for their actions. Corporations were created to be powerful money generating devices, producing huge monetary rewards without incurring liability for any impact on the environment, on labor, or, for all practical purposes,on consumers. Corporate Executives, Managers and Stockholders reap the profits and the rest of us, in addition to getting necessities to easily and cheaply, get manipulated into wanting ever more shoddy, environmentally costly, and disposable goods. I suspect that we won’t change this until the planet itself forces us to. They, those who reap those profits, have too much money and power to allow us to regain control of our own governments.

Start protecting The United States Constitution.
It is simple. Just read the 27 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. This is the legal text granting your freedom in the United States as a citizen. Your freedom does not come from any government, corporation, special interest, special people or twisted Hybrid Mix Government.
Read the First Amendment for an example. Ask yourself this simple question on any of the 27 Amendments; can the largest most powerful corporation take away my right to express my religious beliefs freely, right to express myself freely , right to publish my thoughts freely, read or listen to other views freely or my right to assemble peacefully?
Absolutely Not!
You and I have the greatest power over corporations acting outside of the law or for that matter, them being high priced dirt bags with no values for employees, customers or the land they operate on.
Your Wallet!
A free choice to say “I don’t like what you are doing and I will not purchase from you.” It is a gift as a legal citizen or legal resident. This freedom comes from the 27 Amendments to the U.S Constitution.
Many a monster corporation has whistled a new tune when a consumer backlash against them starts. That is real power. That power and freedom does not come from any government.
On the other hand you could choose to ask the same question about government or a Hybrid Mix Government and the First Amendment.
Can the largest most powerful governments take away my right to express my religious beliefs freely, right to express myself freely , right to publish my thoughts freely, read or listen to other views freely or my right to assemble peacefully?
Let’s see now…they have an active standing army, police powers, the judiciary, all the money they want to print…and your choice is going to be?
This choice is a no brainer…protect The United States Constitution. This is our only legal document protecting our rights and freedoms. It is our only legal protection.
