Republicans Slam EPA Ruling

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports: Republicans are interpreting the EPA’s landmark ruling today that greenhouse gases threaten the public health as the Obama administration’s first step around Congress in curbing emissions. Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, long a global warming doubter and the ranking GOP lawmaker on the Environment Committee, says in a paper and youtube statement that the new EPA rule will “have far-reaching implications for each and every American.” The EPA finding, which opens the doors for far-reaching action by the government to curb emissions, will frame the President’s trip to Copenhagen for an international climate summit this month. But most Republicans oppose proposals to mandate emission cuts and argue that forcing new regulations on industry will hurt the economy. “The Administration's endangerment finding will lead to a wave of new regulations and bureaucracy that will wreak havoc on the American economy, destroy millions of jobs, and force consumers to pay more for electricity and gasoline,” said Inhofe. “This bureaucratic nightmare is based on flawed science. Republicans have said that imposing caps on carbon emissions will raise energy prices, which they argue is no different than raising taxes. Democrats and President Obama will use the EPA’s rule, and the potential that if Congress does not pass legislation to curb climate change emissions, EPA will use its authority to do it for them, as a negotiating tactic with Republicans. At a press conference last month to announce he would join with Democrats to find a bipartisan cap and trade bill, Sen Lindsey Graham told fellow Republcians that the biggest danger to not passing a bill was that EPA would sidestep Congress and make a rule on its own. “Doing nothing has a consequence,” Graham said on November 4th. “The EPA will do something. Doing nothing has a consequence to our business opportunity in leading the green economy revolution that's coming and controlling carbon emissions.” Legislation passed out of Senate committees that would cap the amount of carbon businesses can emit but allow groups that overstep their allotment to purchase credits for more, has stalled. Graham is working with Democrat John Kerry and Independent Democrat Joe Lieberman to form a bipartisan approach to climate change. Lieberman said Sunday the three met over the weekend and could release an outline as early as this week.

Thank Heaven for the EPA, and thank Heaven for President Obama. He appointed an EPA that will act like a tough cop rather than a lap dog for the pollution industry.
Senators who got a D in high school chemistry are in no position to argue with an overwhelming majority of scientists. Global warming is real.
As far as hurting the economy, that too is garbage. Green technology is an emerging multi-trillion dollar industry. The Chinese, who happen to be among the world’s biggest polluters, are already ahead of us in developing solar and wind technology. I should know, since I have invested in a Chinese solar energy company, and the return on my investment is very nice. The Chinese are joined by the Europeans, the Japanese, and even Abu Dhabi, an oil shiekdom, which is investing heavily in solar energy. We’re more than unusually stupid if we don’t latch on.
Greenhouse gases are a major health problem. Since I am a retired teacher from an inner city school, I should know. Asthma was endemic in the school where I taught. And we all wind up paying for asthmatic children and young adults. Republicans are always complaining about the costs of a public option – BUT they are too ignorant, hateful, and short-sighted to understand some of the underlying reasons for our astronomical health care costs.
Again, the GOP is so obsessed by their hatred for President Obama that they are perfectly willing to destroy the country. The GOP is our domestic version of the Taliban. As such, they are not fit to govern.

” doing nothing has a consequence to our business oppurtunity “….thats what al gore said and this is what its all about.science will get you what ever result you pay for. i am laughing because people are already complaining about windmills in their back yard and solar panels blocking views and using more electricty and oil to produce them.

Wouldn’t it be more headline-worthy if Republicans actually did something to protect the environment, approved of steps taken to protect a species or spoke out against a pollution-causing industry? Who am I kidding? Anything that gets between them and a profit has got to go.

wiliam joseph miller….can you say more unemployment? youre retired so maybe its not relevant. every mandated cost on employers equals less jobs. businees has already figured out they are doing more and better things with less employees. more tax less jobs.

Congress needs to place some controlls on the epa before they get a chance to start making laws, they should only be able to recomend to congress and let congress do what we elected them for.

cows give off more greenhouse gas than cars. eat more chicken and dont drink milk while india and china laugh all the way to the bank.

William Joseph Miller, you say, Republicans are too ignorant, hateful, and short-sighted to understand some of the underlying reasons for our astronomical health care costs. —- My, that’s a kind assessment. Are you aware that Doctors are being reimbursed presently at 80% of their COST on medicare patients from the Government? Anyone with intelligence could figure that would lead to higher prices for everyone else. Are you aware that fraud in Medicare (a government run system) is many times higher than in any private company? Are you aware that Medicare is 35 Trillion dollars in the hole? How do you think another government entitlement program is going to help? You seem to be a repsentative product of someone from the educational system……scary!
It’s is nice that you are profiting from political global scare tactics! Keep up the encouraging comments.

Having Inhofe on the environmental committee shows just how serious the republicans are at obstructing the government from having intelligent and honest people in these positions. Inhofe is a buffoon who has no credibility about any issue and certainly not caring about the environment and the people who are affected by the pollution to the air, water and land that we all depend on.

EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA did not work while Bush was in office because they were not allowed to and because obstructionist appointees were put into the top positions there. Now the Agency will protect us and I also am very thankful to the Lord because when republicans are in control it is not for the well being of the country, it is for the wealth and prosperity of the polluters.

Finally and EPA that IS DOING IT’S CORE JOB…Protecting the environment. Bush and Cheney, and most Republicans think that protecting the environment is for the Oil Companies and other mass pollutors to oversea. Thank Goodness we got rid of the previous evil administration. Now if we can just keep the current evil Republicans as bay, we may begin to see our society normalize a bit!!

Heaven has nothing to do with the political decisions of the EPA. How about a little scientific perspective next time!

Just another Communist Tactic to impose a police state where government controls small businesses.

Bush and Obama both report to the same Global Cartel… has nothing to do with petty politics. This is all about control over the American population including small businesses.

I say withhold all funding for the EPA in all future budget bills. Enough of administrators making laws.

Posted by: tiredtoo | December 7, 2009, 8:15 pm 8:15 pm

Perhaps someone can explain to me where the EPA gets its constitutional authority to declare a gas we all exhale a threat to public health.
Seriously, just stop and think about that for a second.

It is good to see the GOP coming out for carbon emissions, only the Dems will will be for clean air.

The scientists studying global warming are not hoaxing the data. They are attempting to reconcile two different data sets. There were no climate monitoring stations prior to 1960. Therefore scientists have to rely on tree ring analysis to attempt a best guess at what the temperature was in the thousands of years prior to 1960. Then in 1960, as the number of temperature monitoring stations increased, scientists had a more accurate set of data. The ‘tricks’ the skeptics are trying to portray as sinister are simply attempts to reconcile the less accurate tree ring data with the more accurate climate monitoring temperature data. That’s it, period. There’s nothing sinister behind it. The climate skeptics are a bunch of paid oil and gas lobbyists, and none of them are scientists.

What the emails revealed was that the CRU a big supporter of global warming had data that over the last decade indicated no warming, and furthermore said data did not fit the models. That’s what the emails revealed.
Supporters of global warming say, that’s alright as we have otehr data. Since they want to now discount the CRU data, they have a big problem. This was a data source they croyed about, but now want to discount. Sound scientific to anyone with basic science knowledge? I don’t think so.

The EPA ruling on c02 is just in time for Obama’s trip to Copenhagen so he can sell out the US. The real goal of Obama and his multi national corporate buddies who are behind the global warming scam is not so much about sharing our 1st world status with developing nations, it is about turning the USA into a third world country.
If we continue down this road, we will all be “legalized slaves” to the multi-national corporations.”

f you look you will find out that this cap and trade scam enriches and empowers corporate giants all over the world.
It gives them freedom and power to pollute, while doing nothing for the environment.
But it is being marketed as environmentalism to appeal to good people so they will support it. We would be better off cleaning up rivers, dealing with corporate food giants, stopping clear cutting of rain forests, ending fish farms, funding public transit and green energy.
The cap and trade scam sold by fake liberal Al Gore has been exposed with the emails.

The corporate monsters who have funded a group to support the Al Gore Cap and Trade scam, the US Climate Action Partnership has these members leading the way;
Alcoa, Conoco Phillips, Dow Chemicals, Duke Energy, Dupont, PG&E, Shell.
Wow! All members of the Corporate Crimes Hall of Fame.

I am perplexed that all of the attendees at Copenhagen are concerned about CO2(inhale,exhale – yep that’s CO2); yet how many tons of CO2 will have been generated to get there and back and by the special facility? SKPE, internet, telephone are marvelous communication tools.

Why would an ice (glacier?) covered island would be named Greenland? Could it be that when Eric the red discovered (and named) Greenland (~985 ad, he settled it and grew crops. Some years later it got cold. Look at second graph, the second red dot from the right to see ice core sampled temperatures:

The “good” Senator will go on his trip with past Bush appointees that NOW works for big oil….this has NOTHING to do with the future or good of America…but how Big will my pockets get LINED.

mary…I agree with you. I would also add George Soros to the fake liberal list. I read he had invested billions…probably the billions he made off our stock market crash…in green industry. I knew the Dems would deliver something big to him. This is all so shameful. The Enron guy came up with the carbon credit scam, btw. Such hypocrisy. Rich Libs can still live large as long as they pay off extortionist Al Gore.

One of the biggest regrets in my lifetime is knowing I helped put Obama in the White House. This person is a fraud as well as a liar. My biggest problem is that I’m a Republican and my party does’nt have a potential candidate that I would replace him with. This is really sad.

Those who do not choose to admit the problems, and address the environment, have their heads in the sand, no matter what political party they belong to.
