Rumsfeld’s Office Attacks White House in Continued War of Words

In a continuing war of words between former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the Obama White House, a spokesman for Rumsfeld this morning suggested that President Obama owes an apology to an ousted general and assailed the administration for being loose with facts.

Last week during his speech on Afghanistan policy, President Obama said that during the previous administration, “commanders in Afghanistan repeatedly asked for support to deal with the reemergence of the Taliban, but these reinforcements did not arrive.”

Rumsfeld, who left office in 2006, called that “a bald misstatement, at least as it pertains to the period I served as Secretary of Defense.”

The president had been talking about troop requests made after Rumsfeld left office by then-Gen. David McKiernan, as we covered last month. On Wednesday, Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that “General McKiernan specifically had a fairly substantial request for upwards of 20,000 forces, which we couldn't meet because they just weren't there. They were in Iraq.”

Defense Secretary Robert Gates on NBC Sunday said "there was, there was, throughout my, my time as secretary of Defense under President Bush, an outstanding request from General McKiernan…Because of the commitment of forces in Iraq, we did not have the, the ability to meet the resource needs in Afghanistan."

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, instead of explaining that the president had not been talking about Rumsfeld’s reign and trying to quell the dispute, did the opposite, saying Rumsfeld should answer questions as to “whether he thinks that the effort in Afghanistan was sufficiently resourced during his tenure as Secretary of Defense.”

And there are certainly questions to be asked.

This morning, Keith Urbahn in Rumsfeld's office continued this back-and-forth, saying in a statement, “White House officials are not credible in denying President Obama’s intended meaning when he said on Wednesday night that ‘commanders’ were ‘repeatedly’ denied additional troops and resources in Afghanistan.

"The administration now claims President Obama was actually referring to denials of troops by his own Secretary of Defense in 2008," Urbahn said. "This is obviously not what the President meant. If it is what the President meant, he owes an apology to General McKiernan for dismissing him, for it was General McKiernan who sought additional forces in 2008.

He concluded: "This looseness with the facts seems to be a pattern in the current administration’s efforts to blame their challenges on their predecessors. Nearly one year into this administration, that approach is wearing thin. Afghanistan has always posed challenges, but in the judgment of the commanders at the time, Afghanistan was properly resourced for at least the first five years of the conflict. Those resources were aligned with proper and achievable goals: eliminating an al-Qaida sanctuary and preventing further terrorist attacks against the United States.”

Typical of Gibbs to make a bad situation worse with his smart mouth! He’s a perfect spokesman for the Obama administration — arrogant, snarky and condescending…and WRONG.

I’m sure Gibbs got beat up on the playground all the time… which explains a lot.

Posted by: Live! From DC! It's Sat Night! | December 7, 2009, 9:17 am 9:17 am

Afghanistan was most definitely not properly resourced. The presdient himself, at hte time, bush was OBSESSED with Iraq. The entire Bush administration forgot about Afghanistan nearly as soon as the boots his the ground in afghanistan. They began planning the Iraq War within the month of entering Afghanistan. Interesting considering they didn’t even have a shred of evidence of any wrong doing. The whole thing was an opportunist scheme. Bush never meant to get bin Laden – the Bush’s are too tight with the Bin Laden family. Bush never meant to really win afghanistan, he just wanted to make a statement nad then distract the country to Iraq and have us forget about afghanistan as quickly as possible. this was a time when the PERSONAL relationships ofthe president and his men were deterimental to the safety of our country.

Gibbs should be fired but he won’t be; he represents the administration perfectly.
“This looseness with the facts seems to be a pattern in the current administration…”
The American public has noticed this, too.
Now, Obama will jet to Copenhagen to discuss giving away our hard earned tax money to other countries because of the sins of America and his predecessors. Global warming is just the scam of the moment to give cover and try to justify the transfer of our money to “spread the wealth” to other countries.
Meanwhile, high unemployment continues to erode and cripple our middle and lower classes.

Leave Gibbs alone people. Gibbs suffers from the same disease that Drew Barrymore suffered from in “50 First Dates”.
Except in Gibbs’s case it’s ’50 First Campaigns’ where everyday Gibbs is stuck in ‘campaign and attack’ mode. He doesn’t realize they’ve won so he never takes the high road that is expected of the administration.
Just look at his ridiculous rants against Rush Limbaugh. That is not talking the ‘high road’ folks.
Of course it could be worse… he could be stuck in ’50 Chicago Style Political Hit Jobs” mode like Rahm.

Rumsfeld, like Cheney, should feel extrememly lucky they were not indicted for war crimes. Perhaps they should both keep their corrupt mouths shut…

Posted by: DaveM | December 7, 2009, 11:03 am 11:03 am

I doubt Cheney or Rumsfeld are worried about being ‘indicted for war crimes’
They had authorization from Congress and legal opinions from the AG, signed off by the President for every single action they took.
They’ve been in the Executive longer than you’ve been alive…they’re not fools.
You need a civics class, sport.

Belive me, I’m no fan of Cheney and Rumsfeld-they’ve made plenty of mistakes, and they are way too cozy with the Israelis, Saudis and other corrupt ME regimes for me…like our current bowing President who stood in front of AIPAC last yr and said ‘we will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon’.
Yeah, right. And what are you going to DO about it, Mr. President?

Rumsfield should be in jail….How dare he? I’m so tired of the attack on Pres. Obama….Why do you think this president has so much on his plate? Because of the failure of Rumsfield, Cheney and Bush. If they had done their job we would have the situations we have now!

Posted by: Barb | December 7, 2009, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

Rumsfeld just can’t accept that he basically led the U.S. into a quaqmire with his two wars. What I don’t get is why Obama has chosen to take ownership of the mess created by the Republicans and the spineless Democrats who goosestepped along. Let’s face it — both Iraq and Afghanistan will eventually have their civil wars, so we might as well clear out now and let them sort it out.

Posted by: Bruce | December 7, 2009, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

“They had authorization from Congress and legal opinions from the AG, signed off by the President for every single action they took.”
Agree.
Jim, why do insist on calling them war criminals? That is Alinsky style defamation of character and parrot repetition of the left wing talking points from a few years ago.
The minute Obama became president, all current issues, problems and perks became his. He loves the perks but is not so inclined to take on the issues and problems without blaming others.
Obama is the president now. He and his staff (I’m calling you out, Robert Gibbs and Desiree Rogers) need to start acting like it.

Posted by: Terra Firma | December 7, 2009, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

Obama owns it all and he now makes decisions on all of it. What happened in the pst will not change what we are doing now. Gripe and moan about Bush, Rummy and Cheney, but this is Obama’s game and he is failing. Iraq drawdown needs to be complete by April 2010 (16 month plan). Gitmo closure by next month. Afghanistan is “America’s war, then he balks at 40000 troops. Now, he should have cancelled his Copenhagen trip due to the controversy and called for an investigation into the data, but no, he continues like nothing ever happened. Wake up Obama.

Torture, illegal prisons, lies to start a war for starters – rumsfeld owes the US and the world a heartfelt appology just befor he commits ritual suicide on network tv.

Vindication for Bush/Cheney.
The Iraq surge worked so well Obama is trying it in Afghanistan. Along with many other Bush ideas–military tibunals, state secrets, wiretaps, indefinite detention, rendition.
Great plan by Obama–follow in Bush’s footsteps.
If it fails blame Bush, if it works take credit. What a leader!

Posted by: mick | December 7, 2009, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

One prime example where Afhgan was underresouced was when OBL was trapped, the CIA man on the ground needed and requested 500 special forces troops to capture or kill him and Rumsfeld denied him the troops. Somebody has to ask him why.

Posted by: Bob Ramos | December 7, 2009, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld, all “war heroes,” (wink wink), fired a series of generals who advocated a force of 250,000 to invade and secure Iraq. But no, our war hero leaders thought 125,000 was enough.
Result: thousands of Americans killed because the Iraq military converted to guerillas.
And now, get this irony: the righties are criticizing Obama for basically listening to the generals and following their advice, with an exit strategy to boot.
These neocon chickenhawks who love “perpetual war” are sick puppies.

Posted by: memongo | December 7, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

We tried shock and awe in Iraq because it had some chance of working – so we had something of a duty to try before committing troops. We believed we could do more with fewer troops. This is something worth trying to see if it will work before committing more troops. If we need more the decision has to be made and followed and I can understand those who feel that the decision wasn’t made or followed when it should have been. But it does seem to me that if you have a reasonable chance of achieving the goal with a more limited commitment it is worth finding out before having to commit more. So I think all the second-guessers (most of whom would have opposed the increases) need to reflect on this before simply saying that it was wrong.

During Rumsfeld tenure as Secretary of Defense, the military was badly mismanaged. We sent troops to fight in Iraq without the proper equipment which caused many of our service people to die unnecessarily. After our initial success in Afghanistan, the Bush administration seemed to forget what our original goals were (get Osama Bin Ladin and destroy Al Qaida) and instead started an ill advised war against Iraq which was also mismanaged. Rumsfeld handled the military so poorly he got canned by his buddy Bush. The people in the Bush administration that are responsible for invading Iraq should have to answer to the world court for crimes against humanity.

Imagine, we went into Afghanistan to get the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and WE NEVER HAD A STRATEGY!! “Smoking ‘em out and getting ‘em on the run” as Bush said is not a plan. If anyone knows “fast and loose” it’s Rumsfeld, who preemptively invaded Iraq and backburnered the mission against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

ABC, did you know that during the first week of December, the former Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich’s attorneys’ office was broken into?
Of all the law offices in Chicago, why was this particular law office burglarized?
Who might be concerned with the information contained in the Governor’s court case?
The ex-governor has mentioned the President’s Chief-of-Staff, Rahm Emanuel, in past interviews.
Could it be that some testimony incriminates the White House Chief-of-Staff or perhaps the President himself?
The last time a political break-in occured there was a great deal of interest.

Here are the facts: The Twin Towers were demolished by terrorits from Afganistan. After a few yrs searching for Binladin, troops were diverted to Iraq based on erronous info that Iraq had WMD. Bush was President at the time …. hence references to the past administration.
I will say this about Obama, he is so much more open than Bush ever was …. which probably makes it easy for everyone (GOP) to take pot-shots at him.

Rumsfeld resigned right after the election of 2006 when the GOP lost.
During 2006, quite a few retired generals called for Rumsfeld to resign.
Many more Generals and officers wanted to speak out but feared retribution from the vengeance minded Bush WH.
Oh and while Bush accepted Rumsfeld’s resignation, his resignation letter was held by the Pentagon until 9 months after the fact.

Yes, one can be a naturalized citizen or a citizen at birth. One can be a citizen at birth by having 1 or 2 parents as citizens or being born on US soil.
“The constitution of the US makes a distinction.”
Yes between naturalized citizen and natural born citizen.

The Democratic party owes its virtual Obama presidency to a viral response to a political simulation: “change”. Like the Soviet Union the Dems will simply evaporate when the same viral electorate is confronted by the hard realities of a strategic threat that is not going away for a very long time.

Instead, ask him about sourcing Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war: The US agricultural credits … the precursor chemicals for mustard gas (and for more exotic chemical weapons) … passing him classified satellite imagery so that Saddam could USE those weapons.
Why ask Rumsfeld? He was the lead US representative to Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war.
