Senior Administration Official: ‘This Was An Attempted Act of Terrorism’

A senior administration official tells ABC News that the incident on the Northwest Airlines flight earlier today "was an attempted act of terrorism. We're taking increased steps to mitigate any threats."

So he was trying to take down the plane?

"He certainly thought he was trying to take down the plane. What his capacity to do so was we don't know right now."

Were these firecrackers, as initial reports indicated?

"They were not. Beyond that I don't want to comment."

Was he operating solo or was he part of a larger conspiracy?

"We're taking all necessary precautions. We have no reason to believe as of now this is part of a larger effort."

What steps will we see taken at airports to mitigate the threat, as the Department of Homeland Security indicated?

"I don't want to get into that," the official said, adding he didn't want to tip off anyone as to what the added security will be, and since there are going to be different security steps taken at different airports, he didn't want people to think their airport security officials weren't doing what they're supposed to.

Peas out of the same pod. Neither Bush or Obama have done the job on the Mexican border and many thousands of illegals have come here to do Americans harm. Yes, Bush and Obama they actually come here to do jobs like sell drugs, kill, steal and the many jobs that that are a darn sight worse than picking tomatoes! Long turn, this mess will sink us

ABC NEWS: YOU NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT SAJID BADAT-RICHARD REID’S ACCOMPLICE WHO BACKED OUT AT THE LAST MOMENT. HE HAD A PAIR OF SHOE BOMBS UNDER HIS BED IN ENGLAND.
HE WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE THOSE SHOE BOMBS ON BOARD A NORTHWEST AIRLINES FLIGHT OUT OF AMSTERDAM TO DETROIT IN 2001, LIKE REID.
THIS LATEST PLOT IS AL-QAEDA TRYING TO TEST THE SYSTEM ONCE AGAIN, TO CONTINUE THEIR PLOT OF BRINGING DOWN A US CARRIER OUT OF AMSTERDAM-AL-QAEDA ALWAYS RETURNS TO THE SAME M.O. SAME PLACE, AROUND THE SAME TIME OF YEAR-IT IS THEIR HALLMARK.

I THINK THE POSTING OF THE TSA SECURITY MANUAL ON-LINE WAS A HUGE SECURITY BREACH, AND MAY WELL HAVE BEEN THE REASON THAT AL-QAEDA IS TESTING THE AVIATION SECURITY SYSTEM ONCE AGAIN WITH THIS LATEST ATTEMPT-BECAUSE THEY’VE ALREADY TRANSLATED THAT MANUAL INTO ARABIC, OF THAT YOU CAN BE 100% SURE!
THAT SOP EXPOSES THE VULNERABILITIES IN THE AVIATION SECURITY SYSTEM-AND THAT IS ALL AL-QAEDA NEEDS TO GAME THE SYSTEM, YOU IDIOTS!
THE TSA GAVE AWAY THE STORE TO OUR ENEMIES-THEY HAVE FORFEITED THEIR RIGHT TO HANDLE AVIATION SECURITY.
IT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH, AFTER ALMOST 9 YEARS OF HAVING A TSA AND A DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY, TO SAY “WE GOT LUCKY”
NOT GOOD ENOUGH! A TERRORIST ONLY HAS TO BE LUCKY ONCE!
WHAT DOES THIS SAY TO THE TRAVELING PUBLIC NOW TSA? THE SYSTEM FAILED! ON EVERY LEVEL!

no, you can call whatever makes you happy, a lot of people died, the purp said some things that indicated affiliations with known Al Queda sympathizers,, ‘terrorists’, ‘murderers’, ‘religious fanatics’, take your pick
does it really matter what Obama calls, it? as long as Obama sets the appropriate forces both civil and military to investigate and pursue all involved than to try and make a silly point about ‘naming’ the act..
Eric Rudolph, terrorist? religious fanatic, christian jihadist, murderer, far-right radical, all of the above?… ,..the dead and injured didn’t care as long as he was caught and brought to trial and eventual justice.

Latest news is it wasn’t firecrackers. It was explosives that came from Yemen.
Obama ordered airstrikes on Al Qaeda targets in Yemen in mid-December. Apparently scores of civilians were killed, including women and children.
The third front on the “Overseas Contingencies Operation” (fomerly known as the War on Terror) is apparently in Yemen.
Happy New Year!

What’s with the 3-hour delay in informing Obama (which the Washington Post has since REWRITTEN to make it look much better for Obama, and much more like he was on top of things, which he wasn’t, since he didn’t know about it)?
Does this indicate the lack of seriousness with which the administration regarded this incident?
Great. Just great. Way to be serious about national security, Obama and minions.

The Obama administration and the mainstream media was very, very slow in recognizing Ft Hood massacre by a native born Muslim officer as terrorist action. The liberal news media even attributed the murder’s action to that he is a pacifist and was a victim of discrimination. Now they want to spend hundred of million dollars taxpayer’s money to conduct a civil court trial of 9/11 related terrorists in New York city in order to produce more embarrassment to Bush/Cheney administration, while the airline security is lagging. I think this big sum of money could be well spent on improving airport security to ensure no explosive can be carried aboard by terrorists.

Okay, but what I asked was, how is the young man who jumped on the terrorist? Regardless, I am still struck by the courage and nimbleness. Is he okay? Anyone read reporting following up on that? I know its been reported that the terrorist’s legs were badly burned.
Here’s what I’m talking about (NYT):
The incident unfolded just before noon. “There was a pop that sounded like a firecracker,” said Syed Jafry, a passenger who said he had been sitting three rows ahead of the suspect. A few seconds later, he said, there was smoke and “some glow” from the suspect’s seat and on the left side of the plane.
There was a panic,” said Mr. Jafry, 57, of Holland, Ohio. “Next thing you know everybody was on him.” He said the passengers and the crew subdued the man.”
I’m aware that the explosive device appeared to be different than what had been used before, and that may be why it went undetected. I’m aware that the FBI is investigating and Brennan held an interagency meeting. I’m aware the chemicials were described as more incendiary than explosive– and that they didn’t seem to have worked asintended, or perhaps they were a test run of something. In my perspective, the passengers were STILL extremely helpful and courageous.I’m not interested in getting all hateful, nitpicky, partisan and terrified. I think that’s petty– and that Hoekstra, King and others in the petty politics category are annoying. Investigations are underway as they should be.

Posted by: progressive mama | December 26, 2009, 11:53 am 11:53 am

“Meanwhile, I think its uncalled for that King, Hoekstra and others are politicizing this. Enough already.”
Hoestra said, “People have got to start connecting the dots here and maybe this is the thing that will connect the dots for the Obama administration.”
King claimed that the man’s name does not appear on the national no-fly list, but it does appear on a list of individuals with “significant terrorist connections.”
How horrible that these representatives are even asking common sense questions to prevent foreign attacks that kill US citizens!!
BTW, Nidal Malik Hasan, the Ft. Hood terrorist, explained that one of the major motives for the shootings was his rage at Obama’s continuation and expansion of Bush’s foreign policies in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The signs were clear to many that he was a time bomb, but political correctness resulted in inaction. Now a lot of people are dead. Could it have been prevented? You bet. How? By people asking questions, escalating their concerns, and authorities taking action.

So, where did I say anyone said/did anything hateful or terrified? Where did I say anything all hateful and terrified? Or did you accidentally use that instead of “partisan” or “petty”? Hmmmm…. or assume my use of the word petty included all of the above.
Meanwhile, another post on Hoekstra to show that others get where I’m coming from on him and King— see Washington Monthly:”PETE HOEKSTRA, SHAMELESS BUFFOON…. Speculation about terrorist plots based on limited information is a fool’s game.”

And King repeatedly says anti-Muslim racist stuff without blinking. Look it up.
Also, Foghorn Leghorn, in your post explaining your interpretation, you didn’t explain how you got “you are petty” from “that’s petty” (I would say the latter refers to behavior not the essence of a person). Nor did you explain how I limited “petty” to ONLY meaning those four adjectives together. But whatever. Obama talks about GITMO being a recruitment tool for terrorist, which of course is Bush’s fault.
Obama has promised to close GITMO, promised an era of engagement and mutual respect.
It’s as if Obama’s word cannot be trusted. Like he has a credibility problem or something.
Maybe because Obama has continued rendition and indefinite detention.
And even has a version of GITMO in Afghanistan.
Maybe Obama has a credibility problem because he does not keep his word.

Despite his ‘bully’ posturing George Bush was so little respected internationally that Iran developed a secret nuclear installation on his watch, North Korean tested their first nuclear weapons on his watch, Chavez ridiculed him constantly . .. and so on.
President Obama has certainly done no worse.

Looks like Hoekstra and King were right after all. Nobody connected the dots.
From the AP (12/27/09):
“U.S. government officials tell The Associated Press that the Nigerian man charged with trying to destroy a jetliner came to the attention of U.S. intelligence in November when his father went to the U.S. embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, to express his concerns about his son.
A congressional official said Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, popped up in U.S. intelligence reports about four weeks ago as having a connection to both al-Qaida and Yemen.
Another government official said Abdulmutallab’s father went to the embassy in Abuja with his concerns, but did not have any specific information that would put him on the “no-fly list” or on the list for additional security checks at the airport.
Neither was the information sufficient to revoke his visa to visit the United States. His visa had been granted June 2008 and was valid through June 2010. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because neither was authorized to speak to the media.”

This reminds me of the flight instructors of the 9/11 terrorists who found it strange that the terrorists only wanted to learn to fly the planes but not land them. They didn’t tell anyone and we see what happened. In this case we actually got a warning weeks ahead of time and did nothing.
But who cares if a terrorist almost succeeded blowing up an airliner with 300 people out of the sky with high explosives? Congress is hard at work on healthcare reform! Idiots.

They are probably happy that this story
has taken over the headlines instead
of the healthcare debacle and the
money news about the debt ceiling
and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
I thought we were going to be safer now
that Obama is charming everyone? With
Gitmo closing and Obama’s glowing
speeches around the world made us less
of a target. What a bunch of naive fools.

So I guess we’ll see Darth Cheney all over the news this week with his doomsday wit.

“They are probably happy that this story

of the healthcare debacle and the

Too true.
From the AP (12/25/09):
“The government has handed its ATM card to beleaguered mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The Treasury Department said Thursday it removed the $400 billion financial cap on the money it will provide to keep the companies afloat. Already, taxpayers have shelled out $111 billion to the pair, and a senior Treasury official said losses are not expected to exceed the government’s estimate this summer of $170 billion over 10 years.
Treasury Department officials said it will now use a flexible formula to ensure the two agencies can stand behind the billions of dollars in mortgage-backed securities they sell to investors. Under the formula, financial support would increase according to how much each firm loses in a quarter. The cap in place at the end of 2012 would apply thereafter.
By making the change before year-end, Treasury sidestepped the need for an OK from a bailout-weary Congress.
The news followed an announcement Thursday that the CEOs of Fannie and Freddie could get paid as much as $6 million for 2009, despite the companies’ dismal performances this year.
Fannie’s CEO, Michael Williams, and Freddie CEO Charles “Ed” Haldeman Jr. each will receive $900,000 in salary, $3.1 million in deferred payments next year and another $2 million if they meet certain performance goals, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The pay packages were approved by the Treasury Department and the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates Fannie and Freddie.”
Hope and Change!!

the only people who think as you do are the anti-Obama types,.. find me something Obama said that indicates he believes the threat from Al-Queda has gone..?
is the only ‘rationale’ left to you rightwingers conflating closing Gitmo and ‘support’ for terrorists?
it’s legit to ask intelligence agencies why the suspect was In U.S. database but not on terror watch, no-fly lists and why there wasn’t more coordination between foreign security agencies.
the real questions remain, since he was very much a fan of ‘hip hop’ music, do we here in the US need to ban that type of music as ‘terrorist inducing’, and do we need to invade Iraq again?
