The Democrats’ Base Problem

One week after President Obama’s liberal base opposed his decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan, several liberal groups are once again lining up against the president and Senate Democrats on the health care reform compromise worked out by the so-called Gang of Ten. My colleague, ABC News’ David Chalian, has more: Harry Reid certainly tried to quell a potential liberal rebellion last night when he said any description of the health care compromise that assumes the death of the public option is an inaccurate one. But it doesn’t seem to be working.  The groups on the left that have been pushing hardest for the inclusion of a public option in health care reform legislation are reading the tea leaves and are none too pleased with what they see. Two email/petition campaigns were announced this afternoon opposed to any compromise that jettisons a public option.  Apparently, President Obama’s endorsement of the Senate compromise deal was also not enough to assuage these groups. MoveOn sent an email to their members saying that Senate Democrats “bargained away the heart of health care reform — allowing conservative senators like Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson to hold the process hostage and protect Big Insurance,” In addition, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee is targeting the four liberal Senators (Feingold, Burris, Sanders, Brown) who have made clear their vote for health care reform was dependent upon a public option being included in the final bill.  The group urges using the reconciliation process in which only 51 votes, not 60, would be needed to pass a bill, but that legislative tactic has already been taken off the table by Majority Leader Reid. “The Senate has the right to pass a bill with 51 votes — but to avoid offending Republicans, Democrats haven’t used it. That’s just weak,” write the campaign organizers. “Instead of daring Republicans and conservative Democrats to oppose a hugely-popular public option on the Senate floor, Sen. Harry Reid is now embracing the unpopular ‘trigger,’” they add. It will certainly be fascinating to watch how the White House and congressional Democrats will tend to their base and get them energized as the calendar turns to the midterm election year in January.

The public option is hugely unpopular. Spin is one thing, lying is another. It’s hard to ask politicians to vote for something that will likely cost them their jobs.

The democrats could take a lesson from the republicans. They stick together even when they are wrong. Many of them are thinking of their own elections. Well, I have news for them, if Obama does not get re-elected….neither will they. If he does not suceed, especially with health care…their jobs will also be in jeopardy just because they are democrats. People will not care if they stood up to their president, in fact, they will be disgusted with them for allowing the party to fail. Just being a democrat willnot be an asset…it could be a liability if Obama does not suceed especially with health care. I think they should think hard on this. (An independent)

As for Mr. Lieberman…a man I once liked. You are a self serving sneak. You show no allegience to anyone but yourself. It will backfire and soon.

Basically, the Dems don’t have the ability to make sound economic decisions, in the face of their liberalism, nor do they really know how to justify their liberalism to anyone who disagrees.
That’s known as being totally ineffective.

Re: Health Care Reform, I find it despicable the way our politicians play games with citizens lives. We, the people who pay all those parasites’ salary should be able to fire them for not doing their job. I imagine they will have no remorse in going on holiday break without passing the health care reform we so desperately need. All of President Obama’s good intentions on deliverying a reform to the people who put him in office are crashing on the establishment wall and we the voters are watching and keeping tabs.

Two thoughts on the corruption of the system: First, the big story isn’t that Mr. Step- is going to the quirky morning show on the American But Communist network; Second, everyone seems to be ignoring the story that a Federal Judge overturned legislation by Congress to end all funding to ACORN. The Judge found that it was magically in the public interest to continue paying thieves public money. Then again, we continue paying Federal Judges extraordinary salaries to render opinions that belong in a cartoon–not coming from an (mis)interpreter of Constitution. Eventually, Mr. Step-will overcome the burden of competing with better morning shows. On the other hand, Federal Judges have become a legitimate threat to our Constitution.

Unfortunately, today JFK would be too conservative to be admitted into the radical leftist democrat party.

So would Truman and a host of Democrats from the not-so-distant past.
Others simply left the party that left them.
Like Reagan.
