Today’s ‘This Week’ Program
My colleague Jake Tapper filled in for me today on This Week. Here is his conversation with Secretary Napolitano and White House spokesman Robert Gibbs and Sen. Mitch McConnell and here is the Roundtable.
Happy New Year to all!

Santorum: Money Will Not Defeat Obama, Ideas Will
Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
Hi. I don’t think you should say a segment, e.g. the roundtable, “continues online” as if there is additional footage of the current conversation, when in fact there isn’t. This is misleading and vexing.
Tapper was great though.
Btw, I think ABC should start a basic cable news channel, like cnn, msnbc, and foxnews. There is a market for an intellectually-oriented and respectably managed news channel. ABC could possibly partner with PBS or BBC to produce a strong competitor to msnbc, fox, and cnn, being respectively too conservative, too liberal, and too simpleminded and irrelevant (WB, CA,and FZ notwithstanding) respectively. Steal FZ and RM.

Not impressed with Jake Tapper. A little too much “in your face”. Good questions make a good journalist, not an aggressive manner. I miss George. Bring him back.

Yah to Jake Tapper. You did a great job today.
The republican senator would not commit to running his campaign against the health care bill. I think they should do this. Afterall they are pro life unless we have to give these children and their parents health care, then they are on their own. Krugar is right its not popular because it is not enough. I hope the Demacrats show some fight and hold the republicans accountable to making sure the insurance companies change for the better, since a public option was so bad. From a regular american like me Lost my job last Dec., No medical insurance, I feel a personal threat with the way they govern and how they dont think of everybody. Why would any Ameican Be So Heartless. Democrats please continue to fight for us.

Very impressed with Jake Tapper. I disagree with Rita (above) that he was aggressive; I’d call it assertive in trying to get a straight answer instead of the usual political pap. Although I miss George also, Jake would be a fine permanent replacement.

Why is everyone letting Gibbs get away with this lame excuse of “500,000 names in the database”? As though the record would have to be searched by hand for each passenger. We have computers, and that’s just the kind of thing they do fast and well.
I had never bought the claim before, but I now have the distinct sense of the administration “always passing blame”, and not taking responsibility simply and directly for (possibly systemic) errors. The smug Gibbs has got to go. Effective advocacy, not political doggedness, is required now.
This plays into the same dissembling and shielding incompetence criticisms they just got for the Salahi incident.
Also, re: the flight incident, the issue of “over-PC” dismissal or failure to follow up on legitimate warning signs, citing the Fort Hood failure as another example, should be more discussed.

This Week without George was terrific, nice job, Tapper. I like George, but since everyone’s ‘on’ to this administration, he could be a little more aggressive. Also, going to Good Morning America to exchange recipes like Charlie Gibson did, seems a demotion to me, though surely more money, and they can count it as a created & ‘saved’ job/

Jake, Why would you not mention that since 911 no one actually suceeded to get on a plane with this type of explosives till this year!!! Hmmm. Also when Janet repeatly said everyone did their job to stop this disaster. I did not realize it was the passengers’ job to thwart terror attacks. We as citizens will continue to do our part, but having had no attacks on the homeland for 7 years since President Bush recognized a “war on terror” and now 2 attacks in less than a year since President Obama brought his brand of “change” one wonders when this administration is going to do their job in keeping it’s citizens safe. I recognize ABC is trying to ask tougher Questions but they still have a way to go. Please hold our government accountable. Thank you!

Jake was perfect for this show in particular. It was refreshing to give This Week an edge. Geaorge, your great, but let Jake fill in whenever your away.Secretary Napolitano says this is what they train for and refers to the system working. The reality is the plane would have blown up had the detonator not failed or could have caught on fire had the passenger not taken action. How dare Secretary Napolitano take credit on behalf of the TSA for a success. This event was a “succesful failure”.

I will miss George Stephanopoulos’ impartial questioning on this show. Today’s show Jake Tapper asked Janet Napolitano “Has a definitive connection with al-Quida been established yet?” Mr. Stephanopoulos would never have added the “yet” to the question reflecting the questioner’s opinion. What I have always liked about Mr. Stephanopoulos is that he doesn’t try to influence the public one way or another.

What I don’t understand, and no one made the connection, is who actually maintains the list of potential terrorists, and who actually has access to it? Do the airlines have access and are the databases of their passenger lists cross referenced to the list of 550000 names? If not, why not? I wish Jake would have gotten the answer to that, because all they seem to be doing is investigating who knew what and when and how and where, when to me, they should already know that! As said above, no sense in closing the barn door after the horse gets on the plane with a bomb, unless of course they actually use the information gathered from the cause analysis to change the systems for the better. Will they?

Please dont have J Trapper substitute for George again. He may be a good correspondent, but he is not a good interviewer. He constantly looked at his notes or the prompter. He was constantly fidgeting, and it was clear he was formulating his next question, not listening to the response. He questions were less than professional,e.g. “I know the president and I cant believe he wasnt going nuts…” Really, he knows the president? Let him practice somewhere else and give us an experienced interviewer

I think Jake did a great job. I’d like to see more of him. He’d be great focused on in depth investigations into major issues.

Jake Tapper did a great job. I’d watch him host the show unlike the ‘meet the press’ replacement.

Good job, Jake Tapper! David Gregory should watch and learn. Jake, after your first guest, you said “Merry Christmas”.(which I also use during this season)
After that, it was Happy Holidays. Were you advised by the producer to alter your message? Disappointing for ABC if you were. Would like to see you fill in again.

Oh I see, hoax emails can be received by millions of people at the same time, but a name on a list of 550,000 names just can’t be flagged on all western countries’ airport immigration desks for extra surveillance? The passengers and crew performed heroically, but the screening system processes failed miserably. This is not “man made disasters”. This is a war against radical US haters on many international fronts, with more fronts emerging every day.

Good job, Jake Tapper! You asked for the answers I wanted and didn’t let them get away with those lame answers.

Jake was great. George, hand over the reigns. You are far too enamoured of the President to be objective. Put Jake in and watch the ratings soar.

great job
I couldn’t tell if you actually support the republicans or the democrats ,again good job asking questions . and a break from George Will Mr. NO . on anything by the democrats . health care will come just like medicare. and the democrats actually do good for the american middle class and the poor . we help the poor pull up there boot straps and get back into sociaties main stream. the republicans want all of us to be slaves . and they do not like a black man being president .. makes me laugh every time I hear Mr. Obama speak ..and he really can read and speak ..LOL not like the last 8 years of Cheney blunders . again Jake great job reporting :)

Jake did a great job today, as I knew he would. He was my first choice to replace George after learning George was going to GMA. I’m glad ABC gave him the chance to host. I don’t see Terry Moran doing any better. Jake gets my vote!

Jake did a nice job, and also he shot Gibbs with tough questions. But, on the other hand, I miss George and his charisma. George, I am your Egyptian viewer and I am writing from Egypt and hope to see you in the upcoming episodes.

No to the Tapper . . his angry, scowling “gotcha” questioning is better suited to Faux News . . . It’s one thing to hold interviewees accountable but another to sow and fertilize seeds of contempt for all government . . I can’t remember when I didn’t watch This Week . . if he replaces George, I will, it will be the date he starts!

GOOD PICK GEORGE KEEP JAKE TAPPER ON THIS WEEK FOR GOOD.

I like the part question where Jake asked O’Connell a question and he acted like he did answer the question when in fact he did not (anti-healthcare platform). Great job putting him in his place to force hin to answer the question he was asked instead of the usual spin he usually gives out.
Although, I find it incredibly discerting that he can lie to the viewers with a straight face!

No to Tapper. Among other things, his use of “Obama-care” as a definitive term for federal health care shows his true colors. Tapper’s bias toward the right needs to take a back seat to objective reporting and incisive questions that have no bent to them. George S. could ask tough questions, but you didn’t see a strong leaning toward the Dems, even though he was in the Clinton White House. He gave the limelight fairly to both Will and Brazile alike. If I want right wing bloviating I’ll turn to Fox.

‘Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, Obama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.”’ Hmmmmmmmmmmm . . . .

LOVED Jake Tapper! Especially enjoyed Jake’s question, “Who’s watching the watch list?”
To Rita, who thinks Jake is “too in your face” – why should government officials NOT be put on the spot when they make absurd comments concerning our national security?

The reporter from Atlanta suggested that the bomber’s father would have been more interested in how his son would have beeen interigated than saving the lives of the people he was trying to kill, has got to be one of the most uninformed statements of the year after only 3 days. When will the left stop blaming the former administration for everything?

Bring back George!
Is this reporting the news or a lynching? Have people forgotten that it was President Bush not President Obama that got us into this modern day Vietnam in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan? That is was President Bush not President Obama who got us into a financial mess with his spend, spend, spend policy where this war is concerned.
Personally I like unbiased reporting not slanted one way or the other. Report the facts and let me decide which way I want to lean.
George you belong here not on GMA. You are a political reporter not an entertainment reporter.

Great, Jake! You would be a very good successor to George Stephanopolous. I like your directness and clarity and the way you press questions politely but firmly when the interviewee sidesteps or waffles. Unlike some of the other commentators,I did not note any “right” or “left” bias. As another commentator said, David Gregory could learn a lot from you.
ABC/George Stephanopolous: I have enjoyed George’s handling of “This Week” since he joined the program. I wish George would stay with it. But, if ABC is looking for a successor, Jake Tapper would be ideal, in my opinion.
